- Estefania (10/5): Amazing ryokan stay! I regret booking only one night! - I am extremely happy with my stay at Minakamisansou. I loved every minute I spend there, and I regret booking only one night. The place was very relaxing, and the private bath inside the room was all I needed! The window of the bath opens, so you can see the nature and enjoy fresh air while soaking in the hot water.
I booked a Japanese-style room, as I wanted to have a more traditional stay. It did not disappoint, and we were able to enjoy the tatami floors, the kotatsu and the futon. The amenities included were all you would need!
Both dinner and breakfast are full courses with small plates. Some were too experimental for us, but overall we enjoyed most of it. The service was outstanding despite the language barrier, and they were absolutely trying (either google, or repeating the information and gesturing). Thank you!
- Laureà (10/5): -
- Graham (10/5): An incredible experience of peace and calmness. - Everything comes together to make a beautiful and peaceful experience. The staff was very friendly and nice, like all of Japan, along with the attention to detail. The view follows very well the saying that life imitates art. Everything was lovely.
- Olivier (10/5): - Tout !

- Sina (9/5): - Exceptional location and staff, great food and genuine hospitality
- JUNCHEN (10/5): - It must be made known to everyone who sees this comment that this hotel is the filming location for Episode 5 of the classic 1990s Japanese drama "Tokyo Love Story." The room where the male and female leads stayed has been nearly 100% preserved to retain its original appearance. The hotel provides a shuttle service to the station, and the staff are warm and hospitable, sharing many details related to the drama (such as which specific room was used). The view outside the room's window remains exactly the same as it was back then. Due to time constraints, I only stayed for one night, but if I have the opportunity in the future, I will definitely choose to stay here again for a longer period.
By the way, the breakfast and dinner included with the stay are also classic and delicious!
- RYANGMIN (8/5): -
- Tzyy (10/5): - An excellent and relaxing experience, felt so much healthier and healing mind, body. Beautiful view. Will be great if hotel can also provide a suggested walking trail map in english next time (or mahbe i miss any existing).. Will be great if the bathroom window can also be opened as the humidity often block the view
- Sahachai (8/5): Nice View for onsen - Private Onsen Wall of Room cannot resist the outside cool
- Jack (10/5): Excellent, highly recommend - The staff were excellent, there were limited English speakers but they did their best to make the stay as warm and welcoming as possible which was truly appreciated. Would highly recommend. They also have a shuttle bus that can take you from the nearby station in Minakami town directly to the onsen. The chef is quite adventurous with the food, it was all delicious but sometimes it might upset western stomachs.
- Wojciech (10/5): - Amazing onsen in the room, you can just put on your yukata and just go down for dinner and breakfast.
Meals are incredible. I thought it will be one big dining room for everyone, but it turned out that everyone has a private dining room assigned. It's so cool.
Staff is great, they do everything for you to feel welcome.
I would definitely do that again Heater in my room was not working, had to use AC instead.
Everything has a smell - room, towels, yukatas, bedsheets. It is not bad, but not good either. I had to get used to that everytime I get back to my room, but still that trip is a 10
- Andreas (10/5): -
- SHeGaRDe (9/5): Amazing onsen ryokan - Everything except the beds. The beds were small and not comfy.
- Andrew (10/5): -
- Cherry Ann (10/5): Great escape from busy city. - The view, the food, the staff, the service💕 I cannot fault anything at all! It was a very pleasant stay for us.
- Natalia (10/5): -
- Dor (10/5): The Perfect ryokan with private onsen - The private onsen in the room is magical and quite big!
It was perfect and enabled us to experience Japanese onsens as a family.
The views from the room were amazing.
The ryokan welcomes children and our son even got his own yokatta Some of the food can be a little strange for our foreign taste but the overall experience was great! Even our 3.5 years old had the time of his life.
- Nyaradzo (10/5): Exceptional - Utterly beautiful stay!!! The view when we walked in took our breath away! The staff were so brilliant nas personal and the room very spacious and comfy. The food. THE FOOD - I CANT EXPRESS HOW GREAT THE FOOD IS. Totally exceeded our expectations. We can't wait to return one day!
- Chung (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jen (10/5): Special stay, stunning traditional stay - The people were amazing! the food was michelin star standard! our room had a private onsen which was amazing! nothing
- Kelsey (10/5): Beautiful and relaxing stay off the beaten path - Absolutely beautiful ryokan with stunning views of the river. The staff was friendly and helpful, the room was clean, simple, and comfortable, and our private onsen was a highlight! The multi-course dinner and breakfast service were absolutely fantastic as well. We took advantage of the free shuttle service to and from Minakami Station, which was also easy to navigate. This was the perfect quiet and relaxing escape during our honeymoon! None - the whole visit was fantastic.
- Kok (10/5): Breathtaking ! - This is truly a gem ! Slightly old but the size of the room and the very attentive service made our stay so comfy and rewarding. The dinner and breakfast were excellent ! We were there in late February and the snow was unbelievable. The snow Mountain View from the Room was breathtaking. We managed to catch the early sun rays on the snowcapped mountains, turning them into “golden” mountains! The onsen was also spectacular with all the snow around us. Feels so romantic and charming! Would love to return in spring to breathe in all the fresh air ! Nothing in particular. Maybe the gift shop could have more items for purchase?
- Alex (8/5): Very good -
- Spencer (10/5): A relaxing getaway in the mountains! - The food was sublime, both dinner and breakfast. The private bath was relaxing and tranquil, with a beautiful mountain view. Nothing
- Caragh (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ilan (9/5): Exceptional value and atmosphere for onsen lovers - Our Japanese style room was exceptional. We had a gorgeous view of Tanigatake from the room and from the in-room onsen bathtub which we could open the door for the feel of outdoor bath. The facilities are old fashioned but functional and comfortable. We liked futon bed and lofty down comforter. The dinner and breakfast were unreal. The chefs created magical meals from local and seasonal ingredients. I should not forget to mention the incredible staff and Okami San, the owner. Internet connection was not consistent. Wi-Fi was available but Internets were not available most of time. The public outdoor bath was rather lukewarm for my taste.
- Katy (10/5): Amazing experience with excellent hosts. - Stunning location, amazing food, wonderful hosts! We had two night here for our honeymoon and we loved everything about it. The staff were so kind, helpful, and patient. We had a massage and a facial organised by the hotel and they were both great. Would definitely recommend staying here!
- Krzysztof (10/5): Exceptional -
- Janet (10/5): Beautiful location with lovely staff, excellent food and a charming waiter - The onsen was spectacular
- Samin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yumi (10/5): We loved the service and facilities they provided here in Minakamisansou! - We stayed here for 2 nights for our honeymoon and it was absolutely perfect!
The food was so delicious and the in room Onsen was so luxurious!
We highly recommend staying here Nothing
- Kseisler (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely staff, really enjoyed the in room onsen. They accommodated my vegetarian request as best they could. My partner loved the food.
- Zhi (10/5): Exceptional - Rooms were very spacious, clean and comfortable. In room onsen and the shared onsen were great, particularly the outdoor onsen which faced a serene mountain.
Staff were really friendly and food was amazing NA
- Kay (9/5): Five star stay - Travel: easy commute from Tokyo taking an hour's ride on the shinkasen then a 20minute bus ride to Minakami station where a mini van brought us to the Ryokan. Communication was prompt and excellent. The bus ride comes infrequently so some planning is required.
Room: we gotten a western style room and the second floor facing the mountains. View was excellent in winter. The private bath was spacious and windows can be opened fully to appreciate the winter views.
Public bath: actually spent more time in the outdoor public bath Vs the private bath. Water temperature not as hot as the room bath but the cooling surrounding makes it very enjoyable to stay soaked for the long time. Only minor point is that the public bath is western facing and we were not able to catch the sun rise.
Food: enjoyed every single dish. Showcased fresh local produce. The beef shabu was excellent. Great stay in winter. Thanks to all the attentive staff who made this a truly memorable stay None
- Hyojeong (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was exceptional
- Nicholas (10/5): Beautiful night with a private open air onsen amazing views and a 20 minute drive to the ski resort! - The dinner was top notch our server spoke English very well and could explain every dish clearly No sauna
- Amornratna (9/5): Good choices for stay - Sitting in the room without windows and views for dinner and breakfast was uncomfortable and not worth the price that I paid.
- Kenneth (10/5): Exceptional - Super good stay. Very attentive personel and extremly friendly. Very good japanese food. Good communicatipn and flexibility
- Preechaya (10/5): A Wonderful Ryokan Stay with a Few Considerations for Access - - Cleanliness and Service: The Ryokan was impeccably clean, and the staff were attentive and helpful, ensuring our stay was comfortable and enjoyable.
- Panoramic Lounge View: The view from the lounge was spectacular. We arrived to a stunning sight of Tanigawa Mountain, which immediately set a serene tone for our stay.
- Room Ambiance: We stayed in the "Tachibana" room, named after flowers. It was quiet, peaceful, and surprisingly spacious. The overall atmosphere was perfect for a relaxing city getaway.
- Private Onsen: The private onsen was the highlight of our stay, offering a tranquil and rejuvenating experience.
- Dining Experience: Both dinner and breakfast were impressive, with beautifully prepared and delicious meals. - Dining Arrangement: While the meals were excellent, we weren’t seated by the window, which would have enhanced the dining experience. This was a minor issue but worth mentioning.
- Accessibility: Getting to the Ryokan required some effort. Reaching the ryokan required some effort. While a shuttle service is available from Minakami Station, travelers arriving via Shinkansen to Jōmō-Kōgen Station need to take a bus that runs approximately every 50 minutes. For families or those with heavy luggage, a taxi offers a more convenient but costlier option.
- Justin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Terrence (10/5): Exceptional - The scenery especially winter is great! Love the private onsen as it is not too old compared to using the public onsen especially during snowy winter! Room is pretty spacious, and meals are delicious and cultural!
- Caiden (10/5): Exceptional - Very traditional breakfasts and dinners, incredible views all around and the onsen on site was amazing. Would stay here again.
- John (10/5): Exceptional -
- Troy (10/5): THIS PLACE IS HEAVENLY! - Amazing place, from pick up at the station until we left / everything was perfect! All the staff were exemplary, catering to all our needs. The dinner was worthy of Michelin imo, grande course with so many options. The breakfast too and it snowed so everything was beautiful, the views 😍 We had private onsen room and the room was huge, steeped in tradition and the onsen was lushhhh especially when you open the door the combo of heat and cold! will be back again, recommended! nothing honestly
- Stamena (10/5): Just wonderful - Fantastic room with a stunning mountain view, great outdoor onsen by the river, delicious food, such friendly staff, very personal service! Nothing
- Nicole (10/5): Lovely mountain ryokan and onsen, a magical place to stay - This traditional, homely ryokan was such a wonderful place to stay. The exceptional kindness of the staff, the spectacular view of snow-topped Tanigawa and the sense of being surrounded by nature and away from the world combined to make our stay unforgettable. We were given a spacious room with a private onsen overlooking the mountains, still coloured with autumn leaves - an early soak was pretty much the perfect start to the day. Both dinner and breakfast were elaborate and exquisite, and our waiter could not have been more helpful guiding us through our first kaiseki experience. We were so glad that we stayed at Minakamisansou, easily one of favourite moments on our first visit to Japan.
- Vincent (10/5): The booking page does not do justice to the incredible experience offered here. - The food was absolutely incredible. The staff were extremely accommodating and friendly. Absolutely beautiful location. Just a great atmosphere and the hot spring was fantastic.
- Wk (9/5): Superb -
- Benjamin (10/5): Best onsen in Gunma - It is the perfect place if you want to get a relaxing trip with a traditional Japanese onsen. The location is quiet and with perfect picturesque views of the mountains from the onsen. The staff are really nice and accommodating, even though we don't speak japanese. The food is amazing and at the same level of a fine dining restaurant every breakfast and dinner. Special thanks to Chinoki who served us everyday in English and helped us enjoy our meals everyday. Nothing, the stay was perfect.
- Keiko (9/5): Superb -

- Michael (10/5): Beautiful area, kind staff - Everything! It was beautiful and peaceful. The staff was so kind and helped us at every opportunity although we speak no Japanese. The onsen was gorgeous, our room was spacious and had an amazing view, and our private onsen was clean and beautiful. Nothing
- Dawid (10/5): Exceptional -
- Harrison (10/5): Best Place in Gunma Prefecture - A truly incredible stay with some of the friendliest staff I've ever seen. Our room and private onsen were fantastic. The dinner was incredibly lovely and really added to the already fantastic experience. The scenery is just beautiful and there's gorgeous viewing windows to relax and watch as long as you'd like.
- Titipong (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lmohan (10/5): Exceptional - This is an excellent establishment, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a place to enjoy their stay. The staff are very helpful and good at communicating. The room I reserved met all of my standards and was very comfortable. I would definitely stay here again!
- Owen (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful room with wonderful view of the mountain and private in-room onsen. The staff were incredibly helpful.
(10/5): Couldn't have been better - Rarely write reviews but the experience at Minakami Sansou highly exceeded our expectations. The hospitality was excellent, the rooms clean and beautiful, the hot spring was perfect, and on top of that the food was also well proportioned and delicious. Would stay here again next time we come to Minakami. None.
- Cai (9/5): Superb - Great room, great customer service, also I loved the entrance of the place in Spring, very green and soothing. Both the private onsen and the public one had perfect view!
- Pananang (10/5): Exceptional - Great view from reserved room. Clean and quiet. Seperate female shared onsen. Just a few staff who can speak english but they all are ful of service mind. The Hotel is far from the citi but you can request hotel's sutter bus to pick you up from JR Minakami station. N/A
- Vivian (9/5): Isolated Japanese Inn with Beautiful Views of Mt. Tanigawa - Overall, an amazing experience with awesome hospitality and flavorful kaiseki meals. Easily accessible with provided shuttle service for pick up and drop off at Minakami station. The view in the lobby is like a painting. I really wish I were here when it was full of snow or during the blossom season.
- Lilian (10/5): Exceptional -
- Guinevere (9/5): Magical experience. - The mountain views, the food, service, the stone onsen. The bathroom is quite old already. Can do with an update.
- James (10/5): Perfect for people to experience a traditional onsen stay. - The experience, the customer service, and the serenity.
- Shih (10/5): Exceptional - Everything is top notch, room is spacious and clean with daily room service, staff is extremely friendly, warm and hospitable. I would like to express my great gratitude to Iwasaki (岩崎) at dining and Yamada (山田泰子) at reception, they are doing their best to make customers happy with great smile 😃 Not forgetting to mention the meals which is very delicious, ingredients are fresh and with great variety. Oh dear I starts to missed the place so much 😄
- Shih (10/5): Exceptional -
- Richard (9/5): Superb -
- Chris (10/5): Great location for an onsen stay. Food is delicious and the staff go above and beyond - Really amazing location and excellent staff who went above and beyond making us feel welcome. I booked private onsen in room and it was perfect. The food is delicious as well. Nothing could be improved on
- Laurie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tak (5/5): Passable - The restaurant staff was not professional, rush the guest to finish the dinner.
- Wong (10/5): Exceptional -
(10/5): Best experience in a less known location. - All the staffs are very friendly and will help you in anyway they can. They also try their best to communicate with us in English and even explaining their meal in good details.
- Päivi (9/5): Superb -
- Jay (10/5): Picturesque Ryokan that you see in movies. But with service and water quality to match. - Phenomenal experience and the in-room onsen had an amazing view of Mt. Tanigawa. In-room onsen has the same source which made my skin feel amazing.
The staff were also great. In particular Iwasaki san who made every effort to explain the Kaiseki meals content and origin in English, going as far as to bringing notes and patiently listening to our limited Japanese.
Kaiseki and breakfast quality was also top notch with fresh ingredient both from Gunma region and other areas. And the desserts for both meals were surprisingly well-made western style dessert with Japanese twist that was not too sweet and perfectly balanced with fruits. Nothing except the number of nights we chose to stay. It was like a dream that went by too quickly.
- Melis (10/5): Amazing ryokan, amazing staff - We had a lovely view of the mountains. The private onsen was very nice, but the public onsen is very good as well! The staff is very nice and always accomodating. If you like traditional Japanese food, you'll love what they serve during the evening and morning.
I recommend to stay at this ryokan either during fall (momiji) or winter. We were a bit too early for the heavy snowfalls, but still managed to catch some snow the second evening. Even without the snow it was lovely. I can imagine it looks amazing with the fall colors!
- Jenna (10/5): Fantastic! - Amazing scenery, kind staff, great room, delicious food. I will remember the view of the mountain from our own private hot spring bath for the rest of my life!
- Lee (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lee (10/5): Exceptional -
- Milton (10/5): Beautiful, restful, serene and the food was exquisite! - Beautiful, quiet, serene. The staff was down to earth and always helpful. They were doing renovations to the property when I was there. As you sat in the lounge looking out to the mountains, you were looking through scaffoldings.
- Aurelijus (9/5): Superb -
- Kim (10/5): Exceptional - Food was delicious, the rooms very nice and clean and there were several hot spring baths so it didn’t feel crowded at all. Would definitely stay there again.
