- PETER (9/5): - The hammocks in the garden by the lake.
The cooking.
Day trip to Monroe island.
- Nerida (6/5): Our host was super helpful arranging a boat ride, tuk-tuk rides and getting us to the train station. -
- Shalu (8/5): -

- Kevin (6/5): - Staff was polite and helpful. ACs struggled against the heat and room size (1 ton and poorly maintained)
Lack of food options
Approach road is unsafe.l
- William (8/5): - We arrived quite late and they put together some food which was very welcome. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. Nice setting near the water with a garden
- Maddie (9/5): Lovely peaceful stay by the water - Lovely peaceful solar powered villas by the water, we had a great stay. The host was super helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We loved relaxing on the hammocks! Good proximity to Kollam but felt very quiet and peaceful. Would recommend thoroughly! Only downside (although this was not a major issue!) was that some of the staff were off for the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, so we weren’t able to have lunch & dinner in the villas, but the host was very helpful with recommending us places to eat & take away food from!
- Agnes (10/5): Refreshing stay in a homely environment - Super cozy place, feels like at home, surrounded by water and with a Paradise-like garden with hammocks and swings. It’s a nice place to stay when in Kollam. The host is really nice and accommodating. Thoroughly recommended!
- Jordan (10/5): -
- Karen (9/5): Value for money in a great location - The location is good with easy access to places of interest. The owners are extremely helpful in contacting transportation for you if you wish to go sightseeing. The room was clean and comfortable. The food was well prepared and delicious There is nothing not to like
- Aaron Schuh (10/5): - I had only planned one day for Kollam, so it was important to plan it particularly well in order to use the limited time as efficiently as possible.
Fortunately, I decided to stay at Ashtamudi Villas. The owner, Joseph, helped me with my planning right from the start. Immediately after my arrival in the late morning, he organized a tour to Munroe Island for the same day, which was wonderful. In the evening, he personally drove me on his scooter to a nearby Hindu festival and accompanied me there. It was a truly incredible experience. Finally, he also organized my onward journey by train to Alleppey and got me the ticket. What can I say – you couldn't ask for more.
The only thing I regret is that I didn't spend more time at the accommodation. It is truly beautiful, with a great garden and located right on the water. My bungalow was extremely spacious, had a great high ceiling, and probably the best bathroom I had in this price range on my tour of Kerala.
I have no choice but to give it full marks. There is nothing to improve.
Thank you, Joseph!
- rajadas (10/5): -
- Nair (9/5): Pleasantly surprised - The place is well maintained, clean and the staff were extremely courteous and helpful.Location is not far from town but calm and scenic. The approach road to the location is very narrow and tortuous for people who drive in.
- Guest (8/5): - Very good location and views Not tv and not good soundproofing
- Aj (10/5): - All over I like.....
Super place and atmosphere.
Coustomer friendly.... Nothing special
- Belinda (10/5): Amazing location with lakeside view and handy hammock to chill out in. Fabulous hosts and another India highlight. - An amazing place to relax and watch the lake activities. We had our own little separate villa which was perfect. The staff were amazing and could do anything for us. Joseph the owner even took us on a local tour in his own car as no available taxi which meant we saw more of Kollam than we would have done alone. We even did our washing at the villa which was a joy. We had lunch cooked for us both days and even helped make a kerala fish curry in the kitchen. Host would book all tuk tuk and boat trips for us and nothing was too much trouble. We went to the 5* hotel to see the sunset and have a drink which was stunning (but still would prefer to stay at Ashtamudi Villas. We came as visitors and left as friends. All perfect and would recommend to all
- sukhbinder (9/5): Sanal was great. Welcoming and massively helpful ; booked tickets for two journeys. Vicky his silent but helpful compan - It’s got a fantastic location on the lakeside. Perfect for sipping wine/beer and looking out on the lake Nothing not to like. We were a touch out of season, but staff were wonderfully accommodating.
- Juliette (10/5): - Le lieu est exceptionnel. Chambre propre. Le propriétaire est gentil et vous aide à organiser vos activités. Leur tuk tuk Vignesh est sympa et vous fait découvrir la région.
- James (10/5): An excellent stay. The accommodations were clean, comfortable, and is in a beautiful location. The host made us feel ver -
- Lili (10/5): - Very satisfied with the location and an outstandingly friendly and helpful staff. It was remarkable when even without asking it they put scent sticks and a platter of tea in front of me while I was meditating in front of the beautiful lake.
- Guest (7/5): -
- Sanjay (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (7/5): Staff cooperative, safe place. - Silent place We don’t get a proper room due to unavailability they said??
- Kamaraj (7/5): Good -
- Anonymous (7/5): Stay was average - I liked the room itself. It was good size and the bathroom was good size There is no AC. You cannot take a big vehicle into the property. Location not the best.
- Machingal (5/5): A fair homestay with a wonderful staff - This is not a hotel. But a home stay. Liked only the staff. A one man show. The location. They should keep the minimum facilities in the room.
- Scott (9/5): Superb - Helpful and friendly owner and staff
Took me to visit.local festivals
Nice cleam rooms and beautiful location.
Great Value for money Nothing really
- Asha (6/5): Peaceful and quiet - I really enjoyed sitting near the banks of the kayal and reading and writing peacefully. The swings were great too.
The book shelf had many interesting books - probably left behind by others. Would like to go back during season and experience the place then.
The recommendation of Meen restaurant was good. There was no one there except for me. Except for a young man Kailas the rest of the staff were on holiday. So I had to ask for cold water to drink. No meals on site. Not even a water dispenser to get water to make some tea. Perhaps during on season things are better.
They should repair the lock on the door. It was giving me a lot of trouble.
- Paul (9/5): A great place to stay for a visit to Kollam. - Located on the banks of Ashtamudi Lake this was a real treat for our 4 nights in Kollam. The accommodation was in a terraced building with balcony for outside dining, a reasonably large bedroom and typical Indian shower / toilet wet room. The owner couldn't have been better, taking 4 of us out at night to 2 large local festivals which were amazing, this was topped off by a promotional film being shot in the grounds. A last treat was our visit to the local restaurant Meen by Chef Pillai, past winner of UK's Master Chef. There really wasn't anything not to like at Ashtamudi Villas.
- S (3/5): Poor - The host is rude to Indians and treats foreigners better, not sure about the reason. He was drunk when we met him.
Staff (Jose) was excellent, hence we continued to stay at the property.
- Henry (10/5): Exceptional - We had the option of upgrading to a room with air conditioning when we arrived which we took as it was very hot. Our room was very cute with a little terrace. I think the best part about it was the location - being right on the lake is so peaceful and it’s easy just to spend lots of time relaxing in the garden. Breakfast was simple, and the host Joseph was very helpful and organised rickshaws when needed. He even gave us a lift and accompanied us to a nearby Hindu temple for a festival that was occurring.
- Hendrik (8/5): Very good - Room with beautiful view to the lake.
Green environment with many birds, including kingfisher.
The owner provided a free ride to a hindu festival.
Cozy atmosphere.
Comfortable bed.
Good homecooking is available on request in advance. There is no restaurant. The walk to restaurants is along a busy pedestrian unfriendly road.
- Lee (9/5): Lakeside rest - Relaxing shady spot by the lakeside, plenty of bird life and noisy crows), family of otters visited one night. Opted for the Aircon room for an additional charge as it was so hot (we booked a room with fan only) didn't feel pressured into it at all. Room had it's own terrace and seating area which was pleasant. Very hard mattress and toiletries consisted of soap. Bathroom had hot water, not that we needed it. Didn't find it so easy to know about tour options, but did the 2hr canoe trip on Munroe Island via tuktuk with was pleasant enough and another around the town including lighthouse, fish market and beach (beach very dirty, wouldn't recommend bothering) and Hindu procession. Had simple breakfast each day (toast and jam with pineapple) which could have been more inspiring. Had lunch which was simple but tasty. Evening meals headed to Meen two nights, 20 mins walk along busy road or a 50 rupee tuktuk.
- Steven (10/5): Exceptional - A nice little lodge on the water. There are hammocks and there is a kanoo available to explore the water, too. Staff was very helpful in accommodating activities.
- Faith (10/5): Exceptional -
- Martin (9/5): Superb - We were on a bicycle and came from the busy city to this surprisingly quiet place. Nice staff. Also arrange boat trips. Good place on the waterfront.
- Alex (8/5): Would recommend the property. Nice staff. Clean rooms. Zero decoration in rooms but adequate. Lovely garden. - Beautiful location facing onto the lake with a lovely garden and nice shady trees. Good size rooms, colourful clean cotton sheets. Also very accessible, can be reached by tuk tuk right up to property. Had dinner at nearby Meen restaurant, excellent food. There was nothing I didn’t like but they could make it so much better with very little effort. The eating area is ugly grey concrete floor, mismatching chairs, one table with a plastic cloth , it could easily be a pretty pergola/ rather than scaffolding poles!
I would not recommend the boat trip arranged by the property. He clearly makes a big profit. Long tuk tuk ride to Munroe island, hot uncomfortable boat ride through filthy water looking at concrete houses. Plastic everywhere and some dead fish floating!
- Sue (8/5): The staff looked after me very well when I was not feeling well. -
- Renecito (7/5): Good - The location. Peacefull and quiet Instead of a warm welcome with coffee, cookies an a lot of fruit ( Bella Homestay Allepey) the owner welcomed us by saying that the room we booked was warm with only a fan and no airco. Cancel your booking and take a room with airco for half of the price more. We refused. Next day he offered us the better airco room for free. Our " fan room " he used for the same reason with a British couple and earlier with an Indian couple. They paid half extra !
A non sympatic way to deal a questhouse.
The rest of the staff was friendly and helpfull. The breakfast - non inclusief was oké
- Mark (9/5): A peaceful and welcoming experience - highly recommend. - The owner of the resort, Joseph, was incredibly generous with his time. As he knew I was a photographer and was keen on capturing local Keralan life and the surroundings, he proactively offered to take me around town on his scooter as he went and ran a few errands for the resort. This included going out of his way to show me the local fish market and other sights. This gave me such an authentic and local experience I otherwise wouldn't have been able to get. The resort itself is an oasis of peace and calm sat right by a Kollam backwater channel. It was a massive breath of fresh air for me having just arrived from Mumbai. The lunch that was prepared for me was also very delicious and one of the best meals I had in Kerala (spiced fried fish, fish curry, Keralan rice and spiced crab meat - all so fresh). Overall, you're treated like one of their own.
- Susan (9/5): Ashtamudi chilling - Staff were wonderful. There was a warm welcome and a lot of thought. We were offered coffee and food. The food we had was delicious.
Our local tuktuk driver was good too.
Viniyak was especially a good member of staff. The owner kept pushing a festival that we didn't want to go to . He even sent me 20 pictures of the event afterwards.which was a bit odd. The backwater tour arranged involved lying down on the bottom of the boat as we went under many low bridges and was not the backwater trip we expected but still an interesting excursion.
- Margaret (10/5): Exceptional - The staff are very friendly and helpful, providing drinks and meals as required. Mr Joseph has a lot of local knowledge and always tries to arrange for guests to visit local temple festivals and events. In a two day stay I visited two temple festivals, also a backwater trip and a tour of the fishing harbour.
- John (9/5): Superb -
- Vineet (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elise (9/5): Superb -
- Helene (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent location, only few kilometres from Kollam train station but in a very serene spot by Ashtamudi lake where we felt in a different world. The level of service from the owner and staff was excellent, they helped organise a fantastic day trip to Munroe island to explore the backwaters and another day circuit of Kollam. We felt very well looked after and will hopefully return.
- Chowdari (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gil (8/5): Very good -
- Chris (10/5): Lakeside Retreat - Great rooms right on the side of Ashtamundi Lake. Seating outside each room and garden chillout area with hammocks. Very clean. Helpful friendly staff who help with all tours, arrangements and travel. Tuktuk driver on call, just ask for Sudhi who will look after you.
- Mohammed (10/5): Bingo #MustVisit - #Ambience great 👏👏👏 #Location Peacefull with lake view #Ashtamudivillas #Sanal will be there for you anytime for your plans and sightseeing #Vicky down to earth and been there for your #coffees and Teaaass and #KeralaFOOD #Nothing
- Maro (10/5): Lakeside tranquility - Lovely, peaceful setting on the lake. Fun watching the birds. The staff was always available if we needed anything. They arranged a tour of the backwaters for us. Early breakfast is toast and eggs, but if you wait until 9:00 you can get a Keralan breakfast. Also, you can have dinner delivered and eat on your verandah. A canoe is available for your use, but it was raining so we didn't use it.
- Thomson (10/5): We had a nice and warm stay. The team is amazing and is very helpful throughout our stay. I will definitely recommend as - Very Calm and quiet place.
Amazing location where you can relax and lost in Scenic beauty of kollam ashtamudi lake waters.
- Narayanaswamy (8/5): Good experience thanks to the friendly staff. - Its located by the lake . Very quite and calm place.
Great hospitality, very helpful staff, tasty food .
The owner is always around to make you extra comfortable and to take care of your needs. The room could have done with more lighting, especially night lamp.
- Nina (7/5): It did not meet the expectations given by the advertisement/description. For a two day stay it was okay. -
- Antonio (10/5): Perfect place for peace and quite in Kollam - Very clean and comfortable with a very nice view and helpful staff. The manager was always there to help and treated us nicely.
- Judy (10/5): My stay was relaxing & blissful! - Everything was perfect!
The host, Mr. Joseph, arranged my 11 pick up from the airport.
Breakfast was served every day by the lake, a few feet from my cottage.
Staff were friendly & attentive.
The quiet was blissful.
- Paul (9/5): Good value for money - clean room with AC, munroe island canoe trip, restaurant recommendation (Meen restaurant). Lush garden with lots of birds. It was no problem for us but it’s good to know: breakfast and simple lunch can be served at the accommodation, for dinner there are good options a 5 min ride away.
- John (10/5): I highly recommend staying here - The setting is very peaceful overlooking the lake. The staff couldn’t do enough for us. They arranged our boating trip on Monroe Island as well as organising a takeaway meal for us in the evening. They also organised the tuk tuk to drive us to our next destination. It was one of the best stays we’ve had in India Nothing
- Thaddeus (9/5): All our wishes were realized. - Everything was superbly organized for us. The location along the river was superb. The staff was super friendly and helpful. We have nothing negative to say about the Villas
- Christa (10/5): Exceptional -
- T (9/5): Lovely experience - The team was exceptionally kind, thoughtful, and helpful. I was even offered a complimentary room upgrade to ensure I wouldn’t be disturbed at night by late arrivals. The room was impeccably clean. After a long day of travel, manager Sanal promptly arranged dinner for me. I also enjoyed a delightful e-rickshaw and canoe tour to Munroe Island, guided by the cheerful and trusted driver, Rajesh.
- Layla (9/5): Really great stay, highly recommend - The villas are located away from the noise of the road and looking out onto Ashtamudi Lake. There are hammocks and swings to relax in. The room was nice and clean and there was seating outside of your room. The staff were lovely and friendly and went out of their way to help. We arrived late at 10pm after travelling all day and straight away they offered some chapatti and dhal which was so kind and just what we needed. I would stay here again for sure. Some of the items on the food menu weren’t available which was unfortunate e.g appam which is one of my favourite
- Aswathy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Maxwell (10/5): Exceptional -
- Abraham (10/5): Exceptional -
