Guest Reviews
- Lina (10/5): - Everything, the food was chef level, the rooms were cristal clean, the location is basically in the entrance of the touristic area and the father is lovely and the family just makes you feel super comfortable. If you can book here, do not hesitate to do so!
- Arthur (9/5): -

- Danny (10/5): Great Japanese accommodation to stay - Authentic Japanese stay. Good variety of food. We loved the onsen room. It was private for each group of guests. It was quite a unique experience. Staffs are very welcoming as well.
- Pol (8/5): -
- Peter (7/5): Warm service and historic charm, but Kaiseki menu underwhelmed - We stayed here during our family trip in 2017 and truly loved the place. Staying at Shiroyamakan feels like living inside a piece of Edo‑period heritage, where every creak of the floor tells a story — yet it’s run by a modern family whose service is exemplary. As part of the stay, the innkeeper takes guests on an hour‑long tour of Shirakawa‑go every afternoon at 3 PM. We joined the tour in the winter of 2017 and hoped to relive it in the spring of 2026, but unfortunately missed it by 30 minutes due to traffic en route. We were quite disappointed at first, but to our delight, the innkeeper kindly offered to take us on a private tour the next morning. We truly appreciated that human touch. Other than the excellent accommodation and service, we also returned for the Kaiseki dinner and breakfast, which we remembered fondly from our previous stay. While the new Kaiseki menu was beautifully presented and still reflected the chef’s skill and authenticity, we felt it didn’t quite match the richness of the 2017 experience. Back then, the meals featured premium ingredients such as Hida beef, sashimi and felt more hearty and indulgent. This time, the focus seemed to lean toward lighter fare — more vegetables and white meat — perhaps aiming for a healthier balance. It was still enjoyable, but we found ourselves missing the more luxurious touches from before.
- Sarah (10/5): Incroyable!
- Robert (10/5): Wonderful stay in a beautiful traditional ryokan with a lovely family. - The dinner is so masterfully crafted from start to finish using whatever is in season and accessible. For a lot of the veggies and some of the meat one of the family members actually goes and forages it. Also, staying in a building that's been around for 140 years is a really cool feeling. Absolutely nothing. Everything was top notch.
- Alice (10/5): Amazing tranquil stay with delicious local food - This was truly the stay of a lifetime. The family were so kind and made you feel as though nothing was too much to ask. We arrived early off the bus and were able to check in immediately at 10:30am. We were also upgraded because of a cancellation for no extra cost.
The room was stunning with breathtaking views of the river and garden. The window could be opened fully which made for an amazing experience.
The dinner was unforgettable and delicious with all locally foraged and found ingredients. The alcohol pairing was perfect and reasonably priced for the quality. Breakfast was also amazing.
The tour around the village was very kind and the father who does it is very funny. He speaks in Japanese and has pre-saved English translations which he plays through the car speaker. It was incredibly well done and made us feel very welcome in his hometown.
I could not speak more positively if I tried about staying here. Absolutely nothing
- Alessandro (10/5): Beautiful place, beautiful food and beautiful people -
- Eric (10/5): Fantastic stay with a family with the biggest hearts! - Beautiful way to discover Shirakawa-go. We had the Japanese room in Ryokan which was just lovely, with a beautiful terrace on the garden and river. And the breakfast and dinner was absolutely lovely. But most importantly, the people. From the daughter who welcomes you, to the father who takes you on a tour of the village and the whole family (sisters, brother, husband...), it's a true family affair. We LOVED it!
- Chia Mun (10/5): Really felt at ease during my stay; the family was really accommodating and super friendly. No regrets. - Fantastic location - a cozy stay that made me felt one with nature.

- Angela (10/5): The highlight of our stay in Japan - The ryokan itself is stunning and it is located in the most beautiful place we have seen in our entire trip to Japan. Shirakawa-go is truly a gem, and i absolutely recommend staying at least one night. The staff was incredibly kind and the thermal baths were very nice too. It was our honeymoon and they surprised us with a traditional japanese wedding ritual during our dinner, an experience i will never forget. The guided tour through the village was both beautiful and deeply touching, were we not only visited the village, but also learned about what it truly means to be a UNESCO world heritage site. It is not that i did not like it, but i definetly do not think that the dinner is for picky eaters at all, and it took me a bit of powering through some of the dishes that are not traditionally western, like wasps or deer tongue. Still, the fact that the family that runs the ryokan had gathered a lot of those ingredients themselves for us made it incredibly special, and even though i will not be eating wasp ever again if i can help it, i am truly glad to have tried it and experienced it. Plus there were lots of genuinely tasty foods and the option to taste different sakes that paired perfectly with each course was incredible too!

- Rebeca (10/5): Amazing ryokan - We had the best stay ever at Shiroyamakan. The family owners/staff are amazing - so friendly. There are only four rooms so the stay feels personable.
Right opposite the bus stop which is very convenient. We checked in and the owner gave us a free ride in the mini bus to the viewpoint which was lovely.
We were then shown to our room which had been upgraded to a river view room. We loved the traditional style but with a modern feel.
Day trips buses leave at 5pm so after that is a great time to walk around the village.
The dining experience was incredible and unique. 9 plate dinner course and an 8 plate breakfast. We enjoyed the Japanese style and locally sourced food. (Just a note for future guests - it may not be to everyone’s taste as it isn’t Western style food). We paid extra for the alcohol pairing which was great.
The onsen was amazing. We used the onsen in the evening and in the morning. There are two onsens and only four double rooms so there was always at least one available and great to have private use. Very clean and modern.
I would 100% recommend Shiroyamakan to anyone wanting a relaxing stay in a traditional and exceptional ryokan. We wish we could have stayed for longer. This was definitely a highlight for our trip to Japan.
- lior (10/5): Relaxing and amazing with an exceptional staff and a beautiful hotel. - The staff were so amazing and welcoming. They knew we were on our honeymoon and they surprised us at dinner with our wedding song and initiated a Japanese wedding ceremony for us. It was so personal and moving. We loved everything in our stay because it was such a beautiful and special experience Take into consideration that if you are a picky eater the food can be a bit different for westerners
- Wanda (9/5): - The room was simple and yet luxurious overlooking the river. The owners who run the property were engaging and super helpful, even bringing a larger Yukari for us. The food was remarkably varied and so much thought went into presentation and the whole dining experience. A small detail is that it sits close to the cross roads: though this does make it convenient for access to the Gassho village and hill lookout point.
- Deborah (10/5): A wonderful and memorable experience. - Tour of Shirakawa go was fantastic! Beautiful antique inn, well maintained and preserved. Meals ere delicious with many unique dishes. Owned and operated by the same family for four generations. They were so kind and caring. Nothing
- Davide (10/5): Once in a lifetime experience - This historic ryokan is 140 years old and has been recently renovated by the 4th generation of owners. As soon as you step through the entrance, you are transported into a dimension made of peace and harmony. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, a must-visit if you want to spend a night in Shirakawa-go. The stay includes private access to the onsen, a private tour of Shirakawa-go, and dinner and breakfast featuring typical dishes made with local ingredients
- Stansfield (10/5): - The best stay I've had in Japan. The food was exceptional, the staff our extremely friendly and helpful, the location is unmatched, and the facilities are top notch. I can't think of a better way to stay in such a historic village!
- Matthew (10/5): - The staff were super friendly, even though we barely spoke any Japanese. We got a tour around Shirokawa-go by the owner which was fantastic. The food was great, featuring a lot of local produce, and the onsen was beautiful.
- ATSUSHI (10/5): Fantastico! - 5

- Tommy (10/5): A magical night in Shirakawa-go ✨ Staying at Shiroyamakan was such a beautiful experience — warm hospitality, authentic - We had a wonderful stay at Shiroyamakan in Shirakawa-go. The ryokan perfectly captures the beauty of traditional Japanese living, complemented by exceptional hospitality from the hosts. Every detail, from the warm welcome to the beautifully prepared kaiseki dinner featuring Hida beef, was thoughtfully curated. The setting is peaceful and picturesque, making it a truly relaxing and authentic experience. It is rare to find such genuine service and atmosphere. We left with very fond memories and would gladly return again. Hit my head few time, as I m 1.8m tall. Some door is low. Hahahah . Just walk slowly.

- Chia-wei (9/5): -
- Blanche Chee Hinn Yih (10/5): - It was perfection. We look forward to staying there again in the near future.

- sebastian (10/5): Authentic and spectacular. You feel like you're truly welcome. - The food, hospitality, location and feel were all spectacular. I plan to visit again, and hopefully for longer. Everything was fantastic. I hope changes are not made to fit any kind of mold. This place embodies authenticity and I hope it never loses it.
- Lai Ying (9/5): -
- Thanhlong (10/5): An absolute must stay experience. Very welcoming and clean establishment. Friendly too all. - This family run Ryokan has been in the family for multiple generations. My partner and I had a lovely time. We wished we could stay longer. A tour (by the father) was offered in the earlier afternoon. I highly recommend coming early and making it to the tour so you have time to explore the village afterwards. The meal was fantastic. We appreciated how everything was locally harvested and prepped by the family for their future guests throughout the year. They were very attentive to our needs and questions and we felt very welcomed during our stay. The daughter of the Ryokan can speak English, which was a huge plus. The Ryokan was recently updated so everything was clean and comfortable. I highly recommend staying at this Ryokan during your overnight stay at Shirakawa-Go. This experience was one of our highlights.
- Lotte (10/5): -
- Felipe (10/5): -
- Asimm (9/5): Lovely Ryokan - The food was truly delicious. The room itself was quite old and normal but the modern dining space and the wooden bath with a fantastic view compensate the value. The family’s hospitality is very heart warming. It was fun to join the owner’s guided tour!
- Mee Keong (10/5): Great location and a very friendly people in a family own Ryokan. - The onsen area is great and super clean.

- PsYkHoTiK (10/5): Exquisitely amazing - I will be back! - The family that runs the ryokan were beyond amazing - super warm and kind. A lot of love and care was put into the food that was served. And the accommodations were amazing - spectacularly beautiful. And the owner even gave us a tour of the village.
- ANGAD PAL (10/5): - The best family run Ryokan
- Jacqueline (10/5): -
- Matthew (10/5): An amazing, truly Japanese experience in a beautiful town. - The facilities, the food and the location were all amazing. Would’ve loved indoor slippers to have been provided for our stay.
- Jiyen (10/5): The best hosts and warm stay in Shirakawago - Everything, warm reception from the hosts and family! None
- Rou Han (10/5): Lovely family, very nice house and amazing service! - The best ryokan I have ever had! Perfect location as it just right opposite the bus station and right at the entrance of the village. The dining experience was amazing by using the surrounding local ingredients, I really enjoyed the meal! I felt so touched when their children sing us birthday song and actually played our favourite music in the background. The Onsen was so good too! The whole family was so friendly and passionate about their work and wish I could stay longer with them! None
- Agnieszka (10/5): 12 out of 10 and the most amazing experience - Absolutely stunning place. The 150 years old house has soul and is so beautiful. Family running it is lovely and the amount of attention they pay to every detail made me understand how hospitality can be an art. There are only 8 guest max so the house is quiet and perfect for relaxing. View from the room to the garden is lovely and there are chairs right next to the window where you can read, relax and drink tee from tea set stored in your room.
The meals are experience on it's own, dinner made of maybe 10 different dishes, each served beautifully allowing you to talk and enjoy the meal for 2 hours or so. Breakfast was equally good. I was really stunned at how this place and the whole experience exceed anything we've been expecting. It's so worth it to stay overnight in a place like Shirakawago and be able to enjoy empty village during late or early walk and soak in the atmosphere. We also really appreciated the trip to view point with head of the family. It was raining a bit to car made it much more comfortable and there were even lovely umbrellas provided. Absolutely nothing. This place has everything anyone can need. The family is lovely and we will come back if we are again in Japan. It's absolutely worth the trip.
- Louisa (10/5): - The staff was super nice and we felt right at home in this beautiful ryokan!!
- Anina (10/5): Absolutely perfect! - This property was probably one of the best accommodations of our honeymoon. The attention and genuine service of the owning family is absolutely out of this world. The owner takes you on a great tour through the town explaining a bit of history. The dinner and breakfast was is included is absolutely stunning. Service, presentation and freshness is perfect. The unique experience of sleeping in the town when all the day tourists have left is absolutely unique. Couldn’t recommend this more.
- Ming (10/5): The living space ’s design is beautiful and full of details, especially the tour of the village is so convenient and tho - The service is brilliant. All family staff are friendly, and the dinning’s arrangement and food is so great. It’s a wonderful staying experience!

Merci.
- Helen (10/5): Experience Shirakawago in tranquility and stay in a family-runned ryokan where you feel welcomed. - Wonderfully located, we could walk to the village in 5 mins, and early morning was quiet, without tourists. Except us. Beautifully renovated ryokan with rooms that are simple and peaceful. The spacious ground floor room had huge windows that opened up to the river next to it, with ensuite toilet and private onsen just next door. Dinner and breakfast were very memorable, local ingredients and unique preparations. Delish. A family runs the ryokan and it feels very welcoming. English-speaking Yuki was so helpful. Would definitely come back. Nothing.

- Wayne (10/5): Unique stay experience with a lovely family - Friendly hosts Nothing
- Philip (10/5): - Best accommodation experience I had ever in my life. This was a once in a lifetime experience everyone should enjoy by themself.
Cena davvero buona, colazione sempre tipica e genuina.
