Guest Reviews
- Heather (4/5): Does the trick for a ski stay with the very basics. - Great location. For what we paid, we expected a little more. The room was bland and basement level. The futon mattresses were very thin. I never quite understood the meal options and they weren’t explained. The hosts were kind.
- Scott (9/5): Great Japanese food and hospitality - Great spot and loved our private bathroom, especially our wooden tub/ Onsen for one. Great after that day of skiing/ snowboarding.
Beautiful breakfast Japanese style and their dinners if you book early are amazing.
- Jo (10/5): - Fantastic to stay in a traditional ryokan. Very clean and comfortable
Staff were amazing
Great traditional breakfast
Conveniently located

- Sarah (10/5): Fantastic. - The accommodation was located in a perfect position, right in the middle of Nozawa Onsen. The traditional architecture and facilities were lovely. We found the service to be excellent, and the breakfast is worth having, especially if you're having a day skiing.
Loved the Onsen and the view from our room. Would love to see a drying room for your ski gear.
For those days where you might need it.
- Kathryn (9/5): Beautiful place, welcoming and in a great location. - We knew this was a 2 star traditional stay so didn’t really know what to expect but we had lots of space for 4 of us, very cosy beds and the owners were so friendly and welcoming. The onsen was great in the hotel too.
- Hammond (9/5): - Loved the omakase breakfast great variety every day. Perfect location!

- Bridget (10/5): Traditional Ryokan right next to the main Onsen! - This is a beautiful Ryokan with the cosiest doona to peacefully sleep off a big day on the slopes. The traditional breakfast was so nourishing and amazing, set you up for being very active on the mountain. The staff were super lovely and helpful and we were able to leave our bags there for a later departure. You are in the beautiful part of the town where you can easily explore the onsens and wander the windy streets. It’s a little bit of a walk to the slopes but you are also right next to the main Onsen and the main strip of town where you can go and get delicious food. So worth it really! Unfortunately we were woken up by loud drunk Australians (being Australians ourselves this was very embarrassing). PSA to Aussies travelling here, this is a traditional Japanese Onsen village that has seen quite a rise in tourism in the last few years because it is truly incredible. So please respect the locals and the onsens and please stop getting drunk and being so loud at 1am you wake up the street.

- Shae (8/5): Great location, warm friendly traditional stay.loved the chokers at the end of skiing - The caregivers were so lovely and went out of their way to help you.location is epic.. cannot get better!

- Chris (9/5): - Location right on the main street of Nozawa. Old school Japanese vibe. Onsen was extra hot!!!
- Andrew (9/5): Perfect traditional Royokan - Amazing place!!! Warm, super comfortable
Wonderful onsen on site Close to ski area
Love love love the innkeepers Nothing

- Chiew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephen (10/5): Lovely traditional ryokan, with helpful staff, great facilities and value for money. - Loved the traditional Japanese room, and the Japanese breakfasts were fantastic. I stayed in the Japanese-Style Quadruple Room with Private Bathroom, which was very luxurious as a solo traveller. The staff were very courteous and helpful.
- Karine (10/5): Exceptional - Perfect stay - our family of 4 loved the room, the athmosphere and the convenient location. Very cosy and quiet at night, futons were very confortable.
- Claire (10/5): Traditional experience - Lovely traditional Japanese inn, extremely friendly and helpful staff. Delicious japanesr breakfast
- Juri (9/5): Nice location and atmosphere - Its typical Japanese type of Ryokan which you can feel nostalgic
- Colin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Angel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Takeda (8/5): I regret only staying here for one night. - It is located right next to Oyu in Nozawa Onsen, making it very easy to find and quite impressive.
The ryokan was far more beautiful and well-maintained than I had imagined.
There is also a designated area in the basement for drying snowboards and skis.
The Okami(landlady) is very kind, so feel free to ask her anything. However, we were looking for a hotel with parking, but during the winter season, the hotel’s parking lot is unavailable. Instead, we had to park at a lot about a 10-minute walk away, which costs 1,500 yen per night.
I wouldn’t recommend driving up to the inn just to unload heavy luggage.
Unless you have a small car and are very confident in your driving skills, you will likely get stuck or feel uneasy.
Chitosekan is a traditional Japanese inn that embodies the charm of old Japan.
Staying here assumes that you are physically comfortable sitting on the floor during meals.
There are usually small chairs available for those with knee issues, so if you have concerns, you may want to ask. However, please do so with respect.
- Jocelyn (5/5): I wouldn’t recommend staying here during winter time. - The staff are friendly and helpful. The property is quite dated and doesn’t have heating function so the whole building was very cold during our stay (Dec 2024). The room wasn’t warm at all and the aircon that blew out hot air alternated between on and off. It was pretty unbearable when you want to seek some warmth from the cold outside and found none in your accommodation. The saving grace is that the staff gave us more beddings which managed to keep us warm during our sleep.
- Melissa (8/5): Very good -
- Junhao (8/5): Very good - walking distance to both Hikage and Nagasaka Gondola None.
- Naomi (8/5): Charming ryokan in the heart of Nozawa Onsen - Excellent location, friendly staff and delicious breakfast. Short walk to either gondola and close to the bus from iiyama station. Right off the main street so easy to walk to bars, restaurants etc
- Whyard (9/5): Superb -
- Ddea2 (10/5): Exceptional -
- Matthew (8/5): If you want a traditional japanese experience then I would recommend Chitosekan. - A lovely traditional Ryokan right in the middle of Nozawa main village a short walk from to the Yu-Road escalator which takes you straight up to the ski area. The hosts are lovely people and the traditional breakfast was delicious. It also has it's own onsen. It is a very old traditional timber building so privacy between rooms is not the best and it does get cold if you don't leave the air-conditioning on.
- Nunun (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ashley (10/5): Exceptional - I stayed here with my sister for 3 nights. This was a lovely and incredibly beautiful place to stay. Our room was so beautiful with intricate design. We had a large balcony and could hear the rushing water. Room was incredibly spacious and could have fit more people, such as a small family.
The location was perfect - right in the center of town and on path to ski slopes. The inn keeper is so kind and helpful. Loved the onsen located in the hotel, which was really convenient for times we didn’t feel up to going to the public ones around town (which are wonderful as well).
We are so glad we stayed here. Don’t miss this charming spot! Good for couples, friends, or families.
- Matthew (10/5): We loved the staff, location and our room. - Friendly staff, great location, convenient to ski field, nice onsen, very clean, traditional.
- Jim (8/5): Very good - Large clean comfortable rooms. Staff were lovely. In the village and a short walk to the ski resort. Large dying room for all your wet gear.
- Sally (9/5): Lovely wooden Japanese guest house with very helpful and attentive staff - Lovely wooden Japanese guest house - oozing a feeling of Japanese history - located in a great part of town with easy access to the ski runs and shops - clean and basic traditional Japanese rooms - with its own small guest house onsen on the ground floor - managed by a delightful family, that go out of their way to make you feel at home and to offer you assistance whatever the request. Simple but delicious Japanese breakfast in traditional setting. A hidden gem of authentic Japan. Will go back... The wifi did not work immediately (showed as connected but was not) but then decided to connect of its own accord after a few hours. I could not get the heating to work in my room on the first night but it was quickly fixed for the second night. For both issues the hotel staff could not have tried harder to help me fix them, rebotting routers and carrying portable heaters to my room. They really went above and beyond.
- Rochelle (9/5): Lovely lady runs this great traditional inn. Was super clean in a great location. We loved our stay. -
- Catherine (6/5): Pleasant -
- Chad (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cory (10/5): Exceptional -
- Prapassara (9/5): Superb -
- Chee (9/5): Superb -
- Simon (10/5): Practically perfect - Very large room, perfect location to watch the Autumn festival from the window, right next to public onsen Breakfast could be slightly better when compared with more high-end ryokan I guess, but with such a low price it is already very good
- Andrew (10/5): Comfortable, friendly, and authentic Japanese accommodation at Nozawa Onsen - Very friendly staff, and very different from western accommodation. An authentic Japanese experience. Nothing.
