Guest Reviews
- Lucas (10/5): - I was relocated to the neighbouring hotel and it was great I was never informed why I was relocated
- Martin (9/5): Great place in the mountains - I liked the place. Yes, it's an older building, but I think the price is fair and everything was clean and the onsen in the main hotel was great. Also, I purchased the frozen curry and a cup soup for 800 yen. The wifi was supposed to be only in the lobby, but I was able to catch it in my room as well. Also, the staff was very helpful with dealing with my lost passport at the previous hotel. No complaints.
- Zhanna (9/5): Excellent onsen - Very quiet place. We had a huge room with forest view. Excellent onsen. It even has an outdoor pool. It belongs to the nearest hotel. Tokonamiso’s client are allowed to visit it. It was one of the best onsen’ experiences we had. Nevertheless there was no meal provided by the property and no restaurant in the zone, there was a kettle and tea bags in the room. It is very simple hotel, a little bit outdated, with basic commodities.

- Ángel (10/5): - We had an amazing stay at Tokonamiso. For the price we paid, it honestly exceeded our expectations. There was an onsen available almost 24 hours a day, and it was such a great experience to relax there after a long day. The staff were all incredibly kind and welcoming, and everything overall was really good. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a comfortable and authentic stay.
- Kyle (1/5): - 1. No WIFI at this place. WIFI is only available at the entrance (hall), not in the room.
2. No staff at this place. This hotel is probably owned by the hotel next door, so all staff are nextdoor. There is even no telephone at the front desk, which means if you need staff's help, you will need to go out and walk for 2 mins to next door to get help.
3. Sound proof is terrible but understandable for Japanese styled Ryokan. However 2 French guys in the room next to mine were inconsiderate talking loudly through the whole night.
4. There is a telephone in the room, but it doesn't connect to the front desk nextdoor.
5. We googled the phone number of the front desk nextdoor and called. No one replied.
6. We had to put on clothes to walk to the hotel nextdoor through the chilly darkness to get staff to help with the situation.
7. The staff had no idea how to help, and asked us to stay in our car to spend the night. It's absolutely ridiculous.
8. What we asked for was just to replace our room, but the staff said it was fully booked and no room was available, while the entire car park was empty.
9. The staff did not speak any English, and after a long negotiation, he finally called the owner of the hotel and asked if they could give us a new room, and the owner immediately said ok.
10. It was in the middle of the night (around 2am). So much time was wasted.
11. We didn't get a new room to sleep until 3 am.
I have never experience such terrible hospitality in Japan. The entire hotel was left behind with no one looking after. The hotel nextdoor is way fancier, so the staff only care about the customers there, not in this one. Facilities were old, with public shared toilet only. You will need to walk to the hotel nextdoor to get bath/shower. It was spring and it was cold at night, imagine in winter you have to wear so many clothse to walk to nextdoor to get shower and then walk back.
This hotel should be closed forever.
- Shishir (10/5): I would definitely come back and when I am back I would definitely like to stay in their other fancy hotel. - It was the best choice ever. They let us use their fancy onsen from their other fancy hotel across the street. It was just sublime. I cannot say anything bad about this place. I also got the room for myself and it was amazing and it was huge. They even had a wash basin in the room itself. Nothing really. Just that I had an interest haunted dream. 😂
- Guillaume (7/5): -
- Rosana (8/5): - Beautiful and comfortable place. Just consider to take some food for dinner and breakfast because it’s far from town.
- Manuela (10/5): -
- Maja Schytte (10/5): Very nice place, classic Japanese room, you have access to the onsen and sauna on the hotel next door, amazing. Room was - Dejlig sted midt i naturen.
- Eyu (9/5): - The tranquility of the environment. The shuttle service provided which really helps. The room couldn't receive wifi
- mitch (8/5): Tranquil stay in the countryside - Really enjoyed my stay here! Was only here for one night. I was picked up in nagiso in their shuttle bus. The staff were really polite and welcoming. They also took time to teach me the procedures for the onsen which was a great experience, all in the countryside. Loved it! Nothing I enjoyed it!
- Jelle Michiels (9/5): - Lovely onsen and nice big rooms. Could use a bit of a spruce up.
- Carolina (10/5): - Magnifique.
- Andraž (6/5): Not as described - Nice place in remote location with onsen. First there was no info on booking about shutlle bus times, so we came late and had to walk 2 more hours just to get to hotel, but someone stoped and gave as a ride to the hotel luckly.
There was also no shared bathroom in our building.
Onsen fee is said to be additional payment paid in hotel, but it is in fact a must even if you dont use the onsen, soo that is misinformation from their side and should be included in the booking price in that case.
- Sasan (10/5): - The hot spring and environment.
- Llamas (2/5): Missleading reviews for an abandoned hotel - The only good thing is the onsen FROM THE OTHER HOTEL. There are several images of this booking site which don’t belong to Tokonamiso installations. ATTENTION! Don’t get fooled by the other reviews. Tokonamiso is an affiliated hotel of Fuki no Mori, and while the second one has a good and well maintained building, Tokonamiso feels like an abandoned place with zero care and no reception whatsoever. When we arrived there were about 6 or 7 stink bugs and several wheel bugs inside the room and more behind the window covers. The staff came with us on the check-in and he didn’t seem to care about it. They even leave you a paper trying to justify this by saying they are in the countryside, but you can easily see this is not the reason since the other hotel had zero insects inside. There is not hot water in ANY toilet, not even in the shared toilets. There is no WiFi inside the room, you’ll have to go to the hall to get signal. If you ever run out of warm water (tea pot) you’ll have to walk up to the other hotel (at night it’s completely dark). There are a lot if stains, webs and dirt both inside the room and in shared spaces. There is also signs of termites in some places. No soap in the room toilet.
If you want to go to the onsen you’ll have to do the walk of shame through the other hotel. This is not the place if you are looking for a traditional, comfortable and high quality ryokan experience.
I provide images below.
- Peter (9/5): A beautiful location in the mountains. - The location is up in the hills, quiet and surrounded by the mountains. The access to the onsen at the beautiful 'sister' hotel next door is superb, which makes up for the basic amenities at the site itself. The facilities are clean and very comfortable. Access without a car makes for a hike up from the local bus stop (although we did do it after dark) and the bus times are infrequent. However, the hotel runs a free shuttle bus on a morning and evening schedule, so you can just register ahead for that. It goes right to Nagiso station. We did that on the way down. Bringing your own food when there is only a kettle and microwave available is a challenge, but likely not such a deal if you are driving or not staying multiple days. There is a common refrigerator. They do give clear information so that one is prepared for this and we had no difficulty.
- Frida Eleonora (8/5): - Amazing location in the middle of the nature. Shuttle to and from the accommodation worked perfectly. Staff was really really nice. Was great that it was possible to use the onsen in the hotel next doors.
- Ayelet (7/5): - Tatami room Too rigid: no plates, spoons or cups in eating area; only washiki toilets; I have asked, but was refused to join dinner in the main hotel (and pay for it, of course).
Si ho demanes et venen a buscar a l’estació i t’hi porten un altre cop. Molt molt recomanable. Res, tot magnífic.
- Ryunosuke (10/5): -
- Eisha (8/5): Average hotel with a superb onsen - A nice place to rest after a day of hiking. We took the shuttle bus (blue bus) from Nagiso Station, no reservation required. The room was comfortable. There is a hot water kettle, microwave and small fridge available for guests in the lobby, plus tea and instant coffee. The onsen next door at the sister hotel was incredible. Very lovely indoor and outdoor baths plus a sauna and great quality bath products. Staff was extremely kind. Fresh coffee instead of instant coffee would have made a world of a difference.

Lavandino in camera.
Assurdo!
Struttura un po' vecchia.
- Rei (10/5): -
- Adrien (9/5): -
- Andrei (10/5): Beautiful location, excellent onsen - Extremely beautiful surroundings, red maples were spectacular. The onsen was very fancy and pleasant, especially the areas outside under the red maples. The common area had cozy fireplace and free coffee and tea that we appreciated very much.
- Sophie (10/5): The best onsen in Japan - This place is amazing. The other reviews are a bit harsh- don’t go here if you’re expecting to stay in a luxurious hotel room with an all inclusive vibe- that is clearly not what this hotel advertises. They provide a traditional Japanese room to sleep in, a separate toilet, all of which are very clean and well maintained. They have tea and coffee facilities, a fridge and a microwave and they VERY clearly tell guests multiple times before staying that they do NOT provide food and that there is none there. If you choose to ignore this then that’s on you!! If you want a hotel with food then go somewhere else! It’s honestly not much hassle to get some food and bring it to the hotel room, given the availability of food in Japan. Come prepared and you’ll have the best stay because you’ll ultimately spend most of your time in the onsen at the neighbouring hotel- which is absolutely incredible. The best onsen I’ve been to in the whole of Japan. The views, the relaxing nature around you, the tranquility. It is 100% worth a visit and I would definitely return. Nothing
- Silvia Lina (6/5): - The onsen was amazing No food, limited food choices, the onsen is not inside the proprierty and you have to walk to the proper hotel for that
- Teck Chong (8/5): Natural stay, superb sister hotel's onsen - A stay near to natural, do expect some insert.
Onsen provided by sister hotel superb, a small walking distance towards the sister hotel.
Host is very friendly, introduce us the available facilities when we arrive. The old style room is run down. Some major renovation maybe required. The room rate will need to revisit too in this case.
- Sergio (10/5): -
- Magdalena (10/5): Amazing place to relax after hiking day !!! - I loved the location !! In the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nature and silence. But to get there you have to catch the last shuttle bus at 17:10 sharp, it doesn’t wait and you have to be on driver’s list ( means you have to reserve the seat first writing a message to the hotel staff). It stops at Parking 1.
Rooms are quite large and spacious, our had a toilet and a sink at the entrance, tatami beds and a huge window overlooking the forest 😍😍😍 green tea and coffee are provided, you can also buy cup ramen at the reception of Fuji no Mori hotel, but there is nothing else to eat there.
We could use onsen that was situated in the sister hotel Fuji no Mori, it’s 2 min walk, and it was gorgeous!!!! They also have open air onsen.
In the morning the same shuttle bus can take you back to Tsumago or to Nagiso. Nothing !
- Joseph (2/5): Not recommanded. - Access to the bath at the hotel close. No restaurant services, AND nothing to cook provided, even not possible to get a bowl or a plate at the desk, the so called bento that they sell at the hotel next door were expensive and disgusting, something like airplane food, even worst. A lot of things are broken in the hotel, and the heating system in the hall smell petrol, futon are not real futon, and some wood part of the room are in plastic fake wood. Until now the worst hotel we slept in.
- Sarah (9/5): - This accomodation is very low rated, comments are quite negative so we had low expectations. And we were actually very positively surprised.
The accomodation is part of a complex. I guessing the owner bought the site and keeps the old accomodation running for a cheap price meaning you don’t have the same service as you would expect from an hotel. The accomodation is actually very cheap for the area (more than half price the others you can find in the area).
The building is dated, some upgrades were done to make the bedrooms comfortable but the rest of the building is quite basic. The rooms however are comfortable, brand new aircon/heater, water dispenser, coffee/tea and the futon bed are comfortable. Like any old building, bring your ear plug if you are a light sleeper.
In the most recent building where the hotel is, you have access to the onsen, which was one of the best you experienced around the country (indoor, outdoor and sauna).
They don’t provide food (although you can buy a bento box at the reception of the hotel for $3). We bought our own food. There is hot water and microwave available as well as a selection of black tea, green tea, coffee and a couple of vending machines which juices, sodas, beers.
The property is about 10km inland so they provided a shuttle which ran from
Nagiso station at 3pm and Tsumago 3.10pm,
Nagiso station at 4pm and Tsumago 4.10pm,
Nagiso station at 5pm and Tsumago 5.10pm
And same in the morning from the property to Tsumago and Nagiso Station at 9am and 9.50am.
You are meant to message the property that you are going to use the shuttle. We were booked at 5pm but took the 3pm instead. The property never answered back to confirm but they had my name on the list. The shuttle is blue and has the sister hotel name on it (and a small A4 sign for Tokonasimo.
The all experience was very positive. We wish we stayed there another night using shuttle and train to keep walking from Nagiso station to Nojiri station. I wish they would have communicated about the shuttle better as I messaged them but never got an answer back.
- Eyu (9/5): - The ambience is so good. Good to be surrounded by the forest. Staff are friendly. Especially loves the Onsen. The only downside is the lack of bathroom. Have to go to the Onsen to take shower
- Diana (6/5): -
- Valdas (10/5): -
- Catherine (10/5): -
- Tomohiro (7/5): -
- Teresa (8/5): All in all it was okay. - Quiet and beautiful surroundings Far away from everything and no showers in accommodations, but we could use the sister hotels onsen and then we had to pay for that!
- marybeth (8/5): Amazing hot baths, worth the trip. I would go back - Fabulous onsen (hot baths) and tasteful and functional big rooms. No food
- Hazel Marice (8/5): - Polite staff, clean and secluded place, and free shuttle bus (although available only at certain times, and you need to inform them ahead if you'll need the ride). You need to bring your own food and cutlery, although they do offer frozen bento.
Might be hard to take a bath at the sister hotel if weather is bad.
- Kathleen (7/5): An interesting experience. - The setting is beautiful and the onsen is charming and well kept. The staff were pleasant and the shuttle to and from the station and Tsumago was perfect. It was cold in the communal area. The walls in the room were dirty and the room smelt damp on our arrival. After being heated and aired for a day it was okay.It is old an and tired.
No restaurant was a real disadvantage with nothing close by the hotel.
- Maricela (7/5): -
- Guillaume (10/5): -
- Alba (8/5): - The guest house could be a little newer, there are some humidity stains in some places. But othrwise it was good and the room was cozy.
- Marcela (8/5): -
- ANH-TUAN (9/5): -
- katharina (10/5): -
- Christelle (8/5): A great place to stay close to Tsumago - Our bedroom decor was very authentic, beautiful and comfortable, our bedroom had a private sink, the Onsen was fabulous. We didn't mind eating food we brought on our bedroom tatami, it felt special. The walls between each room are paper thin. A family with a baby were next door and we could hear them. We asked to be moved to another room and got upgraded to a bigger room which was fantastic and very quiet.
- Dov (10/5): -
- Gianluca (10/5): -
- Giordano (7/5): - The mountain setting location was delightful , the shuttle bus service was important due to the isolated location, the onsen facilities next door at fuki no mori were good & the WiFi worked well. No food was available at the lodgings with no other restaurants within kms. The only shower facilities were at the onsen next door.
- Sarah (7/5): - The onsen bath is fabulous
- Aaaddii (7/5): -
- Deidre (8/5): -

- Eiko (10/5): - Beautiful hot spring bath in door and outdoor.
Free tea and coffee in the lounge room any time. All good.
- Alexander (10/5): Jederzeit gerne wieder!
- Miguel (7/5): Very good quality price ryokan with a free shuttle and amazing onsen. - The place is amazing. It is quiet, beautiful, employés so nice, high quality onsen, free shuttle from the station and the visiting sites, futon very good quality. Tokonamiso is part of Fukinomori, a very higher standing ryokan and you can feel a big différence when you go in it for onsen and it is normal but Tokonamiso is old and it need a serious work of refresh, in the entry room, the genkan is not clean, the corridor is past. There are stains in the room. In the sink part in the room there are a lot of stains on the walls. No soap... ? We had a wc relatively new in the room and it is cool but others rooms haven t. There are no showers at all for Tokonamiso. You have to go to onsen. So Tokonamiso is awsome for a little budget but they can invest very few in it only to a refresh place and more clean, less old, past apparence and have showers. It is my personnal feeling. Think about food because you won t have any services or food machines.

- Smithfield (10/5): Beautiful onsen experience surrounded by Forrest. Close drive to Tsumago. - The onsen is incredible across the road - totally unexpected! Creates the value for money in this room. The staff looked after our family by placing us in the room with a private toilet. A great location with a car to explore the area. We were planning to visit without a car but changed our mind at the last minute. It would have been tricky with 4yo to explore area with limited hotel shuttles and public buses on the area.
- Dennis (10/5): Mountain retreat for leisure - Feels like “the real Japan” I enjoyed sitting by the “window” enjoying a beer for at least an hour. The bird song made it idyllic. The clothing and getup is also nice and proper. It has an onsen that is next level, also with an outdoor area that feels really special. If anybody forgets to bring food to the property they are up for a bad time. It is also remote, which could be a good thing too. I would advise to stay maximum a couple of days. More if you really want to relax to the max. Some of the interior is dated, but I’m not sure I think thats a bad thing.
- Nikolai (10/5): Highly recommend - Peace Wife works only in the lobby
