Guest Reviews
- Mark (8/5): -
- renee (8/5): - Great location
- Sasu (10/5): Great value with comfortable beds & good amenities - Fantastic guesthouse with spacious rooms, comfy bets, tasty breakfasts and very friendly owners. The onsen (bath house) was bigger than what we had expected based on the pictures.
- Hattaway (9/5): This hotel has everything needed to stay at NozawaOnsen for a very reasonable price. - Breakfast was well organized and prepared with guest convenience in mind. The location was one of the best in the village being just around the corner from the main street of shops, bars and public onsen, and within walking distance of snow lifts. The dryer didn't seem to work too well. After washing some laundry and spending 200 yen for 2 drying cycles, clothes still needed drying out. Some instructions on using the washing machine may also be helpful to guests.
- Kaylar (10/5): - The room was huge and location was perfect, right in the middle of town with a 5min walk to the travelator which takes you to slopes. The owners are very lovely and welcoming making the stay here as comfortable as possible. Free breakfast each day was a treat! I will definitely be back. Nothing
- Beau (9/5): -
- Maria (10/5): -
- Debbie (10/5): -
- jacqueline (8/5): Old but good location - Great location. Big rooms. Breakfast was good . The place is dated and carpets need a clean. You walk under the road to get to the rooms.
- Lane (9/5): Awesome location clean accommodation with a village feel highly recommend - Yamatoya is so centrally located close to everything. Clean and private with great onsens
- Jodie Piper (10/5): - 18 day stay was just so homely.
Great onsen to relax after a day on the slopes. The owners were very helpful and humble.
Was perfect place to stay close to all the yummy resturants.
Easy walk to the travalator.
We will be back for 2027.
Jodie and Rod.
- FelipeRat (10/5): - Tomii and his wife are lovely people. While they can't speak much English, the are very friendly and Tomii explains what you need including lift passes.
The accommodation couldn't be in a better location just off the main street and the ski lift travelator is only 100m away and takes you up to the gondola.
The rooms are huge, clean and warm.
The onsen in the hotel is better than the photos but also there is a public onsen opposite.
The full breakfast everyday is fantastic.
I could not imagine there is a better value place in Nozawa Onsen.
Definitely hope to come again. Nothing
- brod (9/5): - The handy location
- John (7/5): The property was older , but extremely clean . The staff were very friendly and courteous. - Great location Evening curfew made it difficult for arrival with late Nagano Snow bus schedule
- Hamish (8/5): -
- Aine (9/5): Great value - Ideal location, very sweet hosts
- Nichole (10/5): We loved our stay at Yamatoya and would definitely book again. - Excellent location. Lovely owners. Hot breakfast each morning. Comfortable beds. Would definitely stay again. A few flights of stairs if on the upper level, we were aware of this before arrival and was not a problem but may be an issue for some.

- David (10/5): -
- Bronwen (10/5): Great location and value for money. . - Spacious rooms, warm comfortable beds with your own bathroom . Lovely friendly owners and a great location. Nothing.
- AnaC_BM (8/5): Great location - Easy access to ski resort and restaurants.
Room size is great and the onsen was very relaxing after a busy day on the slopes. Could have a couple more power outlets in the room.
- Brendan (7/5): -
- David (8/5): -
- Ryan (10/5): -
- Nicole (6/5): If you value location over facilities than this is an excellent choice. - The location and value for money. Very tired. Beds uncomfortable.
- Michael (7/5): - Having breakfast prepared each morning.
The proximity in Nozawa Onsen to the main street, ski lifts, bus terminal and restaurants was excellent.
Having the room temperature controlled to be comfortable and not cold.
Provision for skiing equipment and drying.
Clothes hanging rack in the room. I would have preferred a traditional Japanese breakfast.
Stair handrail on the first flight of stairs was covered by fabric, making the accent and decent of the stairs difficult.
Breakfast time was not explicitly communicated during check-in.
Absence of body wash and shampoo in the bathroom.
- Prashya (10/5): Best location! - Amazing location! Tomii, his wife and staff were so helpful and lovely. The breakfasts are big and predominantly meat and egg - but they also have apple, toast and jam. The rooms are huge even for western standard.
- Amanda (10/5): A great ski holiday in an awesome town. - Friendly helpful staff. It was great having an onsen on site after a hard day of skiing. Great location in the centre of town. Nothing all was great.
- Prem309 (10/5): -
- Gemma (7/5): - Location, owners, clean
- Abigail (10/5): Cozy stay in great location - The elderly couple running it are very friendly and helpful, beds are so comfortable, prime spot right in the middle of town, bottom of the hill for the mountain but still walkable and downhill after a long day snowboarding! Loved the private onsen but beware the water is very very hot and we only learnt to cool it down with the hose later in our trip but it made the water much more bearable. Oh and no lift for heavy luggage.
- Youcheng (9/5): Recommend for people ok with some self-service and limited budget. - Very nice location, close to public spring, gondola and restaurants.
staff are friendly.
It’s an old small building but very well maintained, and very clean, room is warm and bed is soft. every one takes shoes off first on the entrance so it’s quite as well. Breakfast included.
- Tristen (8/5): - Location Food wasn't amazing for breakfast but passable, the stairs got old after skiing but it's location was A+ and it's Onsen was a good temperature (42 degrees - 45 degrees).
Staff were friendly and helpful and all in all would reccomend. If you're fussy about pillows, BYO
- Abby (10/5): Highly recommend and enjoyed every bit of our stay - Beautiful welcoming owners of the properly and friendly staff
Breakfast is included and great location, right in town and short walk to either gondola
Own bathroom and generous sized room
- MEI (10/5): We liked the 1 person occupancy of the onsen. - Breakfast had toast which I love. The shower in the room could have had shampoo and body wash. Maybe even conditioner.
Since the onsen had a single person occupancy, this wasn’t a problem.
- Junhee (10/5): -
- Zou (9/5): 地理位置绝佳~性价比贼高! - 地理位置极佳,距离大汤20米,就在镇中心位置。 不会主动每日提供换洗浴巾和牙膏,需要自己去前台索取。
- Robert (10/5): Friendly, comfortable and excellent value - The owners were so friendly and welcoming!! They are very polite and helpful, plus the hotel is in an excellent location! I would recommend this hotel strongly 😊 Having to leave!!!
- NW_Geelong (9/5): Older style, comfortable place in a great location. - Delightful, older host couple. Perfect location. In-house onsen. Comfortable beds. Good wifi. We were fortunate being the only people staying (mid-Autumn)! We have no complaints, but the place is a little dated / tired. The hospitality of the hosts well and truly made up for that.
- Adrian (7/5): Good - Breakfast. Onsen
- Emmanuel (10/5): Exceptional - Great location, heart of downtown and easy walk to the ski lifts
- Andrew (6/5): Pleasant -
- Lara (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gabriella (9/5): Great family run hotel, very friendly staff, superb location. - Great location in heart of Nozawa, easy walk to eateries, shops and public bathhouse.
Great breakfasts every day. Rooms could have had more cutlery and dishes.
- Carlos (10/5): Great hosts. Excellent location. Will definitely come back. - The hosts were very friendly and everything was well though out to help us foreigners. Breakfast was delicious. The Onsen was very nice, and location was perfect. Will try to come back.
- Joel (10/5): Perfect Location, Great Host, Lovely Breakfast, and then the onsen... - What a great little place. It is old and dated, but if you aren't looking for a fancy hotel and this place is within your budget, you won't be disappointed.
Tommi San has to be one of the sweetest men in Nozawa Onsen if not Japan. He researched local buses for me and presented his findings on arrival after we'd exchanged emails leading up to our trip. His English is very limited, but that doesn't stop him from trying.
The breakfasts were a great way to start each day and the private onsen was a great way to end your day after tackling the slopes.
The location is perfect - close to town, close to the slopes - nothing is more than 5 minutes away. Not an issue for us, but the stairs to the rooms could be a struggle for anyone with mobility issues. The main rooms are split over two floors and the stairs to the top floor are quite steep. Hard on the legs after skiing all day, but the onsen heals all :)
- Tingting (10/5): Toni san is the best . We will be back at this little gem - Proximity to Nagasaka gondola, clean, food, private onsen , private bathroom, warm N/A
- Trish (10/5): Exceptional -
- James (3/5): The facility badly needs to be refurbished - Great location The place is so old and smelly
- Steve (5/5): Passable -
- Emily (10/5): Fantastic value, would definitely recommend. - Extremely good value! We had a great stay at Yamatoya during a ski holiday. The rooms are much larger than your average in Japan and the beds were super soft and comfy so we got a good night’s sleep every night. There was a delicious breakfast included in the price which was plenty big enough to fill us up before hitting the slopes. There is a natural onsen on the ground floor which was free and great for aching muscles at the end of the day.
The host Tomii was incredibly kind and generous. He went the extra mile to help us enjoy our visit.
It is possible for guests to book ski pass tickets at reception for a discount on the main station price which is very helpful.
We hope to come back to Nazawa Onsen and stay again at Yamatoya one day!
- Rico2049 (9/5): Would stay there again for sure, because of the owners (super nice) and the location. - Simple but nice, served on time, and main dish changing everyday. The place is a bit old, but it has its charm.
- Dylan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Brendan (9/5): Perfect place for long days on the mountain. - Simple, clean, warm and quiet. The location is perfect for accessing the village and Hikage gondola. Breakfast was tasty and filling for a day on the mountain. The private onsen is perfect for relaxing and recovering after riding all day. A wonderful place to stay in Nozawa Onsen. Nothing. Value for money ryokan.
- Jen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Judith (6/5): Had everything I needed and is no frills - Very close to everything and yamatoya is a lovely homely hotel Getting my heavy gear up 3 flights of stairs
- Paul (8/5): Great location which really added to the whole experience. - Located right in the centre of Nozawa and only a short walk to the moving walkway. It is dated, but we found it comfortable and great value for money.
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional -
- B (8/5): It’s a “Ute” not fancy but fully functional. - Great location.
- Ashlea (9/5): Superb -
- Neil (10/5): perfect position for ski holiday - basic rooms and facilities - Standard Japanese breakfast well organised nothing
- Lisa (9/5): Superb - Clean quiet accommodation in a great central location. I was on the third floor and could not hear anything from the other rooms which made for a great night’s sleep. The room had a good heater and good wifi. For someone who just wants to sleep well and ski it’s excellent. You can also buy discounted lift tickets from reception if you pay in cash. I notice that many reviewers comment on the good breakfast. As a vegetarian, I cannot agree. It was heavily meat based. I tried to communicate to the owner to please not serve me any meat in order to prevent food waste, but I am unable to speak Japanese and the owner spoke very little English so I could not communicate this to him which was unfortunate. I recommend that vegetarians/vegans supplement their breakfast with their own food.
- Cates (9/5): Superb -
- Alexander (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely guests nice breakfast great location would love to stay again Nothing it was perfect
- David (10/5): Exceptional - It felt like we were staying in a family building. The owners were extremely welcoming and engaging to talk with. .
- Vanessa (10/5): Perfect location and atmosphere for a Japanese ski holiday - You can’t beat location. Walking distance to 1st and 2nd gondola (you can leave your gear in lockers at gondolas at end of day and walk back down to hotel.
Our own private ladies and men’s onsen was perfect at end of day to soak muscles.
Location to main st where all the nightlife is is unbeatable Nothing!
Although it is an old building and decor is old you can’t complain when it is clean and best value for money
- Ianhendo (7/5): Yamatoya good option - Excellent location 500m from Nagasaka gondola and 20m from village main Street. The Onsen on the property is a great feature. Comparative value for money is good. Walls and ceilings are in need of maintenance. Beds need upgrading. Breakfast was appreciated but I think a cereal option or selection popular with the majority of guests who are from Australia, USA or Europe should be offered. Black and herbal tea options in addition to green tea would be appreciated.
- Andrew (9/5): Don't tell too many people about it. - Bang for buck, such a great place. It can be hard to find on the map and the hotel owners don't speak much English (enough to get by) but with a little google translate - problem solved.
Don't be put off by the breakfast. Its a good, solid breakfast to start skiing on. It's a refreshing and simple place.
Don't expect anything but a comfortable bed and a hot shower and feeling like you are stepping back in time a little - you won't be disappointed.
There are a male and female onsen available, meaning you don't need to brave the public ones if you don't want to.
The beds are soft and the doona is warm. Such a great location to either Yu road (Hikage) or the Nagasaka gondola. Both about a 10 minute walk.
It's near the shops, it's near food. Not a lot. It's old, it's simple, but it works. Maybe some add in some English translations of what's going on in the room, or the best way to make life simple - but it's a pretty simple life.
I'd go back again. Shared with my daughter on 2x singles and more than enough room.
Be warned, there isn't a lift. While it's not a big building, suggest you ask for a lower level apartment if stairs impact you.
- Michelle (8/5): Very good -
- Meika (9/5): Superb - Great location, lovely owners 😀
- Mark (8/5): Enjoyed staying here, good location. - Breakfast was good. Location is good . Onsen was good. Rooms are old, probably time for a bit of a facelift. Lots of stairs. Overall we enjoyed staying at Yamatoya
- Nicole (8/5): Very good - Very friendly staff. Willing to help even with a language barrier. Was part of the fun. The onsen was so hot, great after skiing.
- Michael (8/5): Very good - Great location and lovely staff Room was a bit noisy
- Daniel (8/5): Traditional old inn with spacious room and private bathroom. Owners made us feel very welcome. - It's not fancy, but you get a spacious room with a private shower / bathroom, which many do not offer. It's in a great location in the middle of the town and surprisingly quiet at night. We were well-fed a simple breakfast before hitting the slopes each morning.
- Zachary (10/5): Exceptional - Couldnt recommend more :)
- Yardley (9/5): Superb -
- Abrahams (9/5): Yamatoya had a good central location with good facilities. Short walk to the resort. - Good standard breakfast with enough to fill you up Onsen was very hot
- Carly (8/5): Excellent location, great staff and service, can't beat the price. - Our stay at Yamatoya was excellent. Staff are very friendly and super helpful. Such a great location, couldn't fault for the price. They are more than happy to organise lift passes which was fantastic (just need to pay in cash). Kids were not a great fan of the breakfasts. A little too authentic for their liking, but in saying that, I thought they were great and filling - perfect for a day on the slopes.
- Mel (9/5): Superb - Staff were lovely Pillows
- Charkel (9/5): Definetly will come back and book this exact accommodation again. - So close to the mountain access while also being close to restaurants and konbini’s. Staff were so friendly and kind, breakfast was included and oh my gosh new meals made everyday by the owners which were delicious. Such nice cosy blankets and pjs were provided. Even had an Onsen which is tattoo friendly and can be used throughout the day privately or publicly as there is a sign and lock on the door. It did have a funny smell throughout the property but I suppose it’s just because the building is old.
- J (10/5): wonderful Japanese hotel and fantastic value for money - The owner and his wife were incredibly helpful, humble, polite and gracious. The whole experience felt very authentic and Japanese, plus having the onsen in the hotel made the experience extra special! Nothing
- Sheila (10/5): Exceptional - Great stay
- William (9/5): Hosts were excellent, breakfast and private onsen added great value to our stay. - Included breakfast was tasty and varied every day.
- Paul (8/5): Very good -
- Amit (10/5): Exceptional -
- Robert (9/5): Nice place, very nice people and about a 10-15 minute walk to lifts. - Very nice and helpful staff. Good breakfast. Two private onsens. Beds could've been a little more comfortable.
- Antony (10/5): Really enjoyable, very nice owners - Great location
Great Value
Excellent Staff
large room with private bathroom
Western style beds considering the price everything was fantastic
- Apple (8/5): Very good - Private onsen and near to the ski area
- Phillip (9/5): Bargain westerner friendly accommodation - The position in the village, and the help received from Tommy-sun were fantastic. I am a bit older and the stairs at the end of the day were a challenge.
- Nicholas (5/5): Excellent location and friendly owners but Yamatoya really needs a complete makeover. - The breakfast was an acceptable western style (eggs, bacon, a bit of apple, juice) and ready for us each morning by 7am which gave us enough time to line up at the Nagasaka gondola by 8.10am. Each day we left our skis and ski boots at Thanx next to the gondola so we didn't have to do the uphill walk in full gear which would have been difficult.
The room was spacious by Japanese standards although we had a tiny ensuite bathroom.
The onsen was fine although way too hot at 50 degrees so we needed to cool it down with plenty of cold water until it hit 42-45 degrees. Beware all onsen users.
Excellent location just off Oyu Street which is the main drag. You would not want to stay anywhere further from the Nagasaka gondola. Yamatoya is in desperate need of a complete makeover. I'm sure that the interiors haven't been painted for over 30 years and that the carpet and all other surfaces are equally old and dilapidated. I'm unsure why the owners have not spent any money on upkeep for so long but maybe the reasonable peak season room rate is the answer.
Another quirk is that Yamatoya is actually two buildings joined by a tunnel which goes under a public road. This is not a problem but unusual to say the least.
Refer above for onsen comment.
- Phil (8/5): Great value stay near good restaurants - Great location, good breakfast, comfortable bed, good value. Hosts went out of their way to help with discounted lift tickets Facilities are tired, though functional. Ski and boot storage is limited
- Louise (9/5): very helpful and kind staff - great location
generous breakfast
- Jason (7/5): Good -
- Maddy (8/5): Fantastic location - The location was great, so close to one of the public onsens, right next to a little craft beer bar and so close to town (you're right in amongst everything)
We had the option of our own private bathroom or the Yamatoya's onsen, which was very spacious.
Staff were just lovely and breakfast was served each day, with slight variations day-to-day.
We always worked up a sweat walking to the main gondola in the morning. Probably takes about 10-15mins. The pillows were much firmer than what we are used to.
- Philippa (6/5): Pleasant -
- David (7/5): Good -
- Gerrod (10/5): Wonderful, amazing, authentic ryokan experience. - The best feature of this accommodation is the excellent location and top class hospitality of the hosts. They made me feel so welcome and seemed to happy to have you there. Breakfast everyday was great and generally ready from about 7am so you could get up the mountain early if needed. They had no issue getting discounted lift tickets and fairly short notice and were happy to arrange for my ski bag to be delivered to the airport after my stay. As other's have mentioned, there are a lot of stairs but this is absolutely not a deal breaker just something to be aware of. There are rooms on the first floor which you may be able to request but even getting to these is quite a few stairs.
