Guest Reviews
- Xiaomin (10/5): -
- Michele Mario (10/5): Amazing stay in Aso - The ryokan itself is truly beautiful, elegant, peaceful, and full of charm. Dinner and breakfast were absolutely excellent, among the best meals we had during our stay in Japan, prepared and served with great care.
The staff were extremely kind and attentive in every detail, making us feel genuinely welcome throughout our stay.
The location is also very convenient: very close to the main places to visit in town, while still being well connected to the station and the train lines. None
- Christine (10/5): amazing stay for a relaxing time, would love to come back - room aesthetic was wonderful and unique, private onsen was a major reason we booked none
- Mark (10/5): -
- Wen Chuan (9/5): - location, and super friendly staffs, delicious food 😋 Have to get down stairs in the mid of nights to go to toilet, also would like to have tissue box in the bathroom
- Michael (10/5): -
- Sam (10/5): - Lovely Ryokan run by two very nice ladies, felt like I was at home.
- Shannon (8/5): Perfect and relaxing two days in Aso- the stay was the perfect ryokan. - Everything- the staff were very welcoming, the food was incredible. The room was cosy and the bed comfortable The outside bath was nice, but older than others we have used- it would be nice to have an indoor shower especially on cold days.
- Alexandros (10/5): -
- Roman (10/5): Unforgettable experience - We booked a room with a private outdoor onsen, and it was easily our best experience in Japan so far. The "room" is actually a duplex apartment featuring a very spacious upstairs bedroom (32m²) with an attached toilet and ample storage. The ground floor includes a traditional Japanese living room, a second toilet, a bathroom, and a small kitchenette.
We strongly recommend booking at least the breakfast (dinner is also available), as the dining was an unforgettable experience. Over our three-night stay, we didn’t encounter any other guests; the hotel manages dining times and locations perfectly to ensure total privacy. Please note that this hotel does not specifically target foreign tourists—the name isn't written in English at the entrance, and English is rarely spoken (aside from the lady who welcomed us). However, if you want to experience authentic Japanese hospitality and courtesy, this is the place to be.
- Charissa (10/5): - Exceptional service, including the welcoming and breakfast service. Wish we did half boarding! A beautiful room fully equipped with amenities. Highly recommend traveling to the hotel by car as public transport is sparse. No other complaints.
My overall experience during this stay was quite mixed.
On the positive side, one of the male staff members spoke excellent English, communicated clearly, and provided very good service. The room itself was spacious, and the bed was large and comfortable, making the indoor stay reasonably pleasant. The room also includes a small balcony; however, due to privacy fencing, the view is almost completely obstructed. One would have to stand on furniture to see anything, which does not align with typical expectations of having a balcony.
The property does mention having a “spring”; however, the water used in the in-room bath does not appear to be from that source. While this may be accurately described, it can still lead to a gap between expectation and actual experience if not clearly understood in advance.
The most disappointing aspect, however, was the condition of the in-room outdoor bath. The wooden structure around the bath showed visible blackening and mold, with signs of surface deterioration and prolonged moisture exposure, indicating insufficient maintenance. In addition, the floor tiles inside the bath were cracked and allowed water to pool, which not only affects usability but also raises concerns regarding safety and hygiene.
While I understand that older wooden structures naturally age over time, there is a clear distinction between natural aging and lack of proper upkeep. Well-maintained traditional properties can still offer a high-quality experience, but the condition observed here exceeded what would be considered acceptable.
The total cost for two nights (without breakfast) was approximately JPY 78,660. At this price point, a basic standard of cleanliness and facility integrity should be expected. While the service and room comfort were acceptable, the condition of the outdoor bath significantly detracted from the overall experience, resulting in a noticeable mismatch between the price and the quality provided.

- Yi Ling (6/5): Disappointing - Private bath was a plus but having experienced it, I think I prefer shared baths as they tend to have better amenities. Wifi was patchy even in the main living area of my room. Corridors were cold and drafty. Wasabi was not fresh but instead made from powder, which was disappointing given the amount I was paying. Very limited shuttle bus service which meant I had to walk 20 minutes with my luggage to and from the station.
- SHU YUAN (10/5): -
- kerry (1/5): We left after one night of our three night stay - Nothing Firstly, although the bed was described as a double, it consisted of two separate single mattresses. I have previously had hip surgery, and the gap between the mattresses caused significant discomfort.
Secondly, we were not aware that the property would be closed at 10:00 pm and not reopened until after 7:00 am. This was not clearly stated on the booking page. In the morning, we were unable to leave when planned, and we almost missed a pre-booked activity as we could not reach anyone by phone. As it was already morning, we did not feel it was appropriate to call the emergency number.
Three the room was either frezzing or so hot it dried your eye out
- Flora (9/5): Beautiful lovely Onsen hotel - Beautiful and lovely Onsen hotel , clean, comfortable, delicious dining and breakfast. Non
- YUKA (10/5): -
- RIRI (10/5): -
- rudo (10/5): -
- Rafaela (10/5): -
- Denis (10/5): Authentic, peaceful with outstanding hospitality - We had a wonderful stay at and truly experienced Japanese hospitality at its best. The atmosphere was calm and authentic, the room was spotless and beautifully maintained. The staff were incredibly kind and attentive. The private onsen was relaxing and well kept, and the traditional breakfast was delicious and thoughtfully prepared. A perfect place to slow down and enjoy a peaceful, memorable stay in Japan.
- Phan Nao (9/5): ASO adventure - Private bath was excellent. Friendly staffs. We had the set dinner and it was delicious.
There's parking, close to coin laundry and convenient stores. No lift with some rooms on the top floor (2 levels only). It was good that our luggages were carried up but we had to take them down ourselves when checked out.
- Iris (10/5): Soak yourselves in a private open air bath by the foot of Aso Volcano - The Kaiseki dinner and the breakfast in a private dinning room were really nice experience for taste and view. The dishes were very well presented in decent plates.
The private open air onsen was also a very romantic experience. I think it's not natural onsen water.
- Ryan (9/5): - The room was beautiful and comfortable. Staff were super accomodating. Outdoor bath takes a while to fill but it is well worth the wait, an amazing experience you can have without leaving your room. The heating feels a little inadequate for the washrooms suring the winter.
Not in the ryokan's control, but the surroundings are quite lacking in amenities. Expect to walk for a long time if you don't have a car.
- takuya (10/5): -
- Man Kuen Joann (9/5): -
- Wu (10/5): -
- Castellotti (8/5): ci ritornerei mille volte - tutto perfetto tutto perfetto
- Tomohiro (9/5): -
- Hyoung (10/5): -
- xinjuan (9/5): Great stay with spacious room, delicious meals, and good service overall - About a 15-minute walk from Miyaji Station. I only stayed for one night, but the overall experience was great. The room was very spacious with a private hot spring bath. The bed and pillows were comfortable, and the room cleanliness was excellent. The half-board meals, which included dinner and breakfast, were plentiful and delicious. The older staff may have limited English skills, but they can still communicate basic messages. Overall, the service is good. Nothing.
- Alexander (10/5): -
- Manabu (8/5): -
- Jasmine (6/5): Great view and place for a short stay - The staff was very helpful and check in was fast. It’s located just infront of Aso Shrine and parking was available at the property so there was convenient. We had a curfew of 10pm which we thought it was odd but probably because our room was the only one located within the main building abv their main entrance. Was a tad bit dusty is some places and furnishings are abit old but overall was a great stay overall.
- HARADA (10/5): -
- KAZUHIRO (9/5): -
- Barbour (4/5): Staff were very kind, however the accommodation and onsen was dated, and didn’t live up to expectation, especially consi -
- Ana (10/5): -
- YEW WEE (7/5): - Room is very big and suitable for 4 to stay. Nothing

(8/5): - The meals were absolutely amazing 😻 lots of fresh delicacies. Same for breakfast. Very beautiful hotel and koi pond, a minute away from Aso shrine powerful spot.
The room had its own Onsen and very comfortable beds on the second floor. Nothing!
- André v.d.M. (8/5): Direkt am Vulkan - All in all war alles okay.

- william (9/5): -
- Virginia (10/5): Welcoming, informal, authentic, relaxing - The Japanese room, very comfortable and relaxing, food was excellent !
- Aleksandra (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely lovely. We had an open-air bath and we absolutely loved every minute spent inside.
Comfortable beds, spacious room, amazing.
- Carmen (9/5): Superb -
- Chotechawan (9/5): Superb -
- Phattanee (10/5): Exceptional -
- Seraphiel (8/5): Cosy and lovely experience - A cosy ryokan that has a mixture of traditional and modern rooms. Meals were in dining rooms that are slightly in need of refurbishing, but clean, and the food was excellent. Breakfast in particular was an amazing spread; dinner comes at an additional cost, but the portions were huge.
The traditional room had an outdoor shower, which would probably be more enjoyable in summer than cold early spring. The amenities provided were good, and service was generally excellent. The welcome matcha and dessert was a lovely touch. Parking was accessible and there was a convenience store just a short drive away, which is helpful. The staff were a little rigid about check-in time, which posed some inconvenience as we were initially planning to reach Aso later in the evening. There was also a curfew of 10pm for the rooms in the main ryokan block, which is a little odd and curtailing, particularly when our party occupied rooms in separate buildings. There were very few eateries nearby too if one didn’t want to eat at the ryokan; we ended up at Joyfull as everything was closed at night.
- Monika (7/5): Good but not special - The outside bathtub is very nice and all basic amenities are available. Contact with the staff is limited due to language barrier and we weren’t given a proper introduction at arrival. Finally, the front door was making a lot of noise because of the wind so we didn’t sleep that well either. Also there is little place for a stroll in Aso itself, we found other villages around were probably nicer.
- Tharawattanee (9/5): Nice place cozy friendly - Very nice cozy place to stay Too many step
- Charles (7/5): Good - Breakfast is good. Dinner is so so Can be more clean
- Li (10/5): Homey Ryokan with Amazing Food - Close to Miyagi Station and Aso Temple with shuttle service from the hotel staff. Staff were all friendly and accommodating. Room was spacious with all necessities and a kotatsu in our room. But the highlight was definitely their meals. Highly recommend if you are visiting Aso The bathroom was much colder compared to the rest of the room but everything else was spectacular.
- Odin (8/5): Very good -
- Hock (5/5): Passable -
- Brad (9/5): Superb -
- Steven (10/5): Exceptional -

- Sopana (8/5): Very good - Nice layout Water temperature is unstable - cold hot cold
- Hweehoon (7/5): Good -
- Tharittiphan (10/5): Recommend for exploring Mount Aso - Nice family style ryokan, big room with private onsen, good food, friendly staffs None
- Sara (10/5): The staff is phenomenal, and the room is like a dream. - Everything was gorgeous. From the entry to the koi pond, and the room itself was breathtaking.
- Anna (9/5): Superb -
- Ching (8/5): Very good -
- Simon (10/5): Homely and atmospheric ryokan experience with welcoming and friendly hosts - We loved our stay at Tsuruya. The ryokan building is very charming, and full of character. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming, particularly the ladies that served our breakfast and dinner. Speaking of the food, the Japanese breakfast was totally wonderful, such a lovely experience eating this dressed in our yukata, that were in the room. And the room was lovely: spacious, tidy, clean, well-furnished, and the balcony with private onsen was such a treat. We would highly recommend you stay here. If you do, do book the set dinner. We liked everything about our stay, the only thing was before the stay the person communicating with us via Booking.com didn't seem very professional so we were concerned before we arrived. On arrival, our worries immediately vanished as were greeted by the lovely staff.
- Hing (8/5): Superb meals and quiet space! - The meals were amazing. So much variety and they were all very delicious. The staffs were very friendly and helpful. Walking distance to the town! It was a bit old and run down. A few of the lights in the room were not working. It’s ok for us, as we were staying for only 1 night.
- Sandeep (9/5): Beautiful Ryokan with phenomenal food and service - Beautiful little Ryokan. Phenomenal service and food. Only 5 rooms and you pretty much don't see anyone else during your stay. In-room onsens were fabulous as well and the family suite we took was massive. Not their fault as it's an old compound but the bedroom was upstairs while the toilets and sinks were downstairs. Tiny gripe but don't let that detract you from staying.
- Yui (9/5): The dinner is a must try and all in all it is an amazing experience. - 1. The room is spacious for three people.
2. The whole hotel is elegant, with traditional Japanese design. You can take a lot of photos inside the hotel as its design is very different from those you normally live in big cities.
3. We had a dinner meal in this hotel. Wow, it's just unforgettable. The seafood is so fresh and overall the meal is bravo!
4. There is a private onsen bath in my room. You can enjoy it anytime! 1. If you travel to this hotel by public transport, you have to walk around 15-20 minutes from the nearest train station.
2. It would be much better if you rent a car and there is free parking space for you to park the car. However, please be reminded that the location of this hotel on Google map is not so accurate. It guides you to its back door where you can't park your car nor get inside.
3. The staff cannot speak in English fluently. However, if you are patient enough, then they will try their best to explain to you with their very limited English.
4. The only place for you to bath is in outdoor. Hence, when you come here in winter, it will be very cold.
- Yeowbeng (7/5): Good -
- Sze (8/5): The place is quiet and comfortable. However, there’s no curtain and made us woke up early in the morning. It only provid - The dinner and breakfast are excellent. Tasty and huge! Only provide private onsen but no public one.
- Zinc (8/5): It is a nice and interesting property. - The welcome tea and snack was refreshing. The breakfast was quite alright, no frill and nothing fancy. The property is a 2 storey house at the corner, it was quiet and peaceful. The luxurious and modern bubble bathtub is very enjoyable. It is a short walk from Aso Temple and there are small eateries within 5 mins walk. Ample parking space. On the first day, the breakfast was served in a room that has no heating and it was really very cold and therefore the food turned cold very quickly. The staircase is steep and the steps are narrow so one needs to be extra careful when walking down the stairs at night to use the bathroom. There is also a faint odour in the toilet. The front door lock is a tad flimsy and can feel a bit insecured despite the neighborhood is safe.
- Chan (8/5): Very good - Staff and meal Nothing
- Jan (10/5): Exceptional - Delicious food and amazing service
- Sean (9/5): Excellent Ryokan option for the Aso area - We really enjoyed staying at this traditional Ryokan. The breakfasts and dinners were traditional Japanese cuisine served by very respectful waitresses. Its well located for Mt Aso. We had our own private onsen which was an excellent way to end the day. We highly recommend staying at Aso Tsuruya
- Kylie (10/5): Exceptional - The dinner and breakfast were both excellent. The room was super comfortable and my kids had lots of fun with the Jaccuzi! We like the small Azo town, too.
- Wing (7/5): Good - Staff is very polite and friendly
Good and tranquil place
Excellent food The toilet smells a bit
- May (8/5): Leisure and rekaxing stay - Good location A bite costly and the food at this price.
- Sally (10/5): I love everything that Shin provided. The room, private onsen and the incredibly delicious Omakase breakfast and dinner. - Staff are so friendly and the Omakase dinner and breakfast are incredibly good 😊 love the private onsen in our room too. I want to come back again. None

- Ao (8/5): A nice traditional ryokan near Aso shrine - The ryokan was very centrally located, walking distance from Aso Shrine. It is a large ryokan with individual dining rooms and a huge kitchen. Rooms are comfortable and there are nice touches, like welcome tea, snacks when you arrive, bathing salts for your tubs. The meals here are a treat! We enjoyed our dinner and breakfast here a lot. You get served different courses and they do give you a lot of food esp for dinner. Everything was exquisitely cooked and coffee at breakfast was a nice touch to end. The ryokan was very busy when we arrived and as such, we couldn't check in even at 3pm as they needed a little more time to get our room ready. However they made up for this by allowing us to check out a little later the next day. Overall, we had a good and relaxing stay here. If you are driving here, Google maps leads you to their back door, you need to head to the front to park.
