Guest Reviews
- Le Pape (10/5): Tout était parfait, les hôtes adorables - Le petit déjeuner était délicieux !
- Juan (10/5): - El trato de los señores
- Viktoriia (10/5): A perfect home away from home! - My stay here was absolutely awesome. The house is so cozy and it truly feels like a home rather than just a hotel. It was an amazing experience to live in a traditional Japanese-style house, it made my trip so much more special. The hosts were wonderful and really went above and beyond to make everything work for me. Breakfast were amazing! I enjoyed every single moment here. Highly recommend to anyone wanting an authentic feel of Japan! Everything was perfect
- Achala (10/5): An unforgettable, special experience. - Okami-san were excellent hosts. We opted for the traditional japanese breakfast and it was truly a special experience. I highly recommend staying here for an authentic kyoto experience.
- Nick (8/5): -
- purcell (10/5): Perfect home stay in great location! - My stay at beautiful Kamuroan was the accommodation highlight of a two month trip around Japan. The property is perfectly maintained and spotlessly clean. My room was authentic, comfortable and a perfect little haven. The hostess made wonderful breakfasts, great suggestions of places for me to visit, helped me with transport advice and made me feel very welcome. Every night when I came home from a busy day on my feet, they ran me a fantastic hot soaking mineral bath which was heavenly! Cannot recommend highly enough.
- Ray (5/5): An interesting experience - It was an interesting and unique experience.
As Okami, the lovely host, emphasises, this is not a hotel. It's her house and quite rightly, she cares about it. The breakfast was truly different, substantial and very tasty. Kamuroan gets rave reviews, but for us, we found the atmosphere too prescriptive, and our hosts just a bit too attentive.
- Yusuf (9/5): -
- April (10/5): An authentic and welcoming Japanese ryokan experience. - My son and I loved our spacious and comfortable suite. What really stood out was the incredibly gracious host family. We felt like a special guest from the moment we arrived. There were delightful surprises too, from a chance to wear traditional clothing for our stay, personalized travel tips, and special homemade snacks to bring with us on our outings. The most memorable experience was the incredible Japanese breakfast followed by a matcha-making lesson. Highly recommend! The shared bathroom concept took a little getting used to at first, but ended up being a non-issue. The location is slightly off the beaten path, but super easy to get to and from via Uber and taxi.
- Duygu Irem (10/5): Wonderful experience! - It is a cozy traditional Japanese-style house and location is excellent. The host was incredibly kind and welcoming. She shared great local tips on where to go and even taught us how to wear yukata. For my birthday she prepared a lovely surprise which made our stay truly special. Overall it was a wonderful experience!
- Michael (10/5): - It was a wonderful stay; the owners and hosts are warm-hearted, helpful, and attentive without being intrusive. Will definitely come back when in Kyoto again.
- Hayden (10/5): Otami San is the the nicest and most accommodating host you could ask for. I arrived at the house with a food sickness a - Incredible location in the old town of Kyoto, walking distance to everything! Beautiful and neat inside with a very traditional home feel. Can’t think of anything except I couldn’t do laundry.
- valentina (10/5): Unforgettable memories - If you want to immerse yourself in Japanese life and get to know the local culture, this is the place for you.
We spent three nights and I felt at home, Okami and her husband are extremely kind people. I already miss chatting with Okami in the morning at breakfast! He taught me how to wear the Kimono as well as recommended me places to find it second hand.
Impeccable cleanliness and divine and abundant breakfast, Okami is an exceptional cook.
The property is family-run with two bedrooms, a shared bathroom and the possibility of having a Japanese-style bath every night.
Thank you Okami for your and your husband’s hospitality.
- Chien Wei (10/5): Excellent and will definitely revisit! - The hosts were extremely kind and friendly, just like a welcoming home. We really enjoyed chatting with the host (Okami-san). The Kyoto style breakfast was fantastic, and everything was delicious!! The breakfast changed every morning during our stay, and all of them were wonderful.
The room was very clean, and we were able to experience authentic Japanese culture and lifestyle, including wearing kimono (Japanese style clothing) and enjoying the ofuro (Japanese hot tub). The location is excellent, which was only a 10-minute walk to Kiyomizu Temple. The surrounding area is beautiful and fun to explore.
- Alyssa (10/5): a lovely authentic Japanese ryoakan that will make you feel welcomed in Kyoto - Kamuroan is 5+++++ stars. The Japanese hospitality at Kamuroan was exceptional and made my trip to Kyoto with my high school/college age daughters perfect. Okami-san made us feel very welcome in her lovely home. The rooms with tatami mats were beautiful and comfortable and we also enjoyed a rejuvenating soaking bath (herbs and minerals) every evening. Okami-san made matcha for the girls every morning and we also had a delicious, homemade, authentic Japanese breakfast. We all really appreciated getting to wear beautiful yukatas and being shown how to properly tie them. If you want to experience an authentic and welcoming stay in a Japanese ryokan, this is the place. It's the only place we will stay in Kyoto in the future.
- Cam (10/5): An amazing Kyoto experience with lovely hosts in a fantastic location! - Fantastic Hosts, amazing experience, perfect location! N/a
- Mathew (10/5): Incredible ryokan run by an incredible Okami-san! - Okami-san (the caretaker of this ryokan) was extremely helpful to me leading up to my stay! She reached out with some very good information about Kyoto, about the food and the etiquette of her ryokan, and how to travel around Kyoto! The location is also fantastic for experiencing some of the rich culture of Kyoto. The tatami mat room was incredible, I loved the traditional feel of the house!
- Sarah (10/5): Charming, friendly, immersive. - Beautiful home. It was appointed with everything we needed and felt like a traditional experience. Nothing! This is a very traditional ryokan experience. Guests should expect to abide by the home’s expectations and requests including a designated shower time, curfew, pre-selected mealtime, and very low noise level. If you are looking for something more flexible and “western” this is not the experience for you but it suited us well as we were looking to immerse ourselves in classic ryokan customs.
- Tara (10/5): Amazing - My room was amazing, room was cleaned and bed was made every day. Nothing
- Krish (10/5): Authentic Japanese lifestyle - It gave me insight to the experience of a Japanese home and lifestyle with very nice host. Felt very welcoming
- Helen (10/5): An authentic traditional experience! - A traditional home run by a very caring and welcoming host and hostess. Your stay entails Japanese customs such as learning to tie a yukata properly and wearing it to breakfast each morning. Breakfast was exceptional and served with great gentility. I recommend Kamuroan-an highly. As an older person, I longed for a comfortable higher chair with full back support.
- Molly (10/5): Authentic home stay and genuine hospitality in an beautiful location - This stay was such a highlight of my solo trip to Japan! The tatami mat bedroom was beautifully decorated and the location could not have been better - it was a short walk to the famous streets in Gion and Kiyomizudera Temple. However, what really sets this property apart was the lovely owner! The homemade breakfasts she made were incredibly delicious, and she always went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable. I would absolutely recommend Kamuroan to anyone visiting Kyoto.
- Thomas (10/5): -
- Mariana (10/5): Warmth - I liked everything. The owner of the house is the kindest and sweetest person, I really had a very good experience, I would come back without thinking about it. There wasn't something I won't like.
- Lecce (10/5): -
- Kevin (10/5): Traditional, relaxing Japanese experience - I was deeply touched by the exceptionally warm welcome from our host, Okami-san, who went out of her way to make me feel comfortable and at home.
The room, the amenities, the delicious breakfasts, and our lovely conversations made my stay in Kyoto truly unforgettable.
Ookini 🫂 No puedo decir nada malo. Todo fue perfecto.
- Quentin (9/5): -
- Hadi (10/5): - Super friendly host, very clean .exactly as was described. Location is great
- Peter (8/5): A super opportunity and introduction to Japanese life and culture in a relaxed environment - Large bedroom with further room on the ground floor
Good facilities with comfortable temperature control Too many notices
Breakfast prohibitively expensive
- Alberto (10/5): Once in a lifetime experience - I had the absolute pleasure of staying two nights at Kamuroan, and it was truly the highlight of my time in Japan. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed with such care and warmth by the lovely okami whose hospitality made me feel completely at home. If you’re looking for a real Japanese experience in Kyoto, this is the place.
The house itself is beautiful—traditional, peaceful, and full of character. The attention to detail and the serene atmosphere offer a glimpse into authentic Japanese living. I highly recommend opting for breakfast; it was delicious, beautifully presented, and a wonderful way to start each day.
A special thank you to the okami’s husband as well—such a gentleman, always helpful and polite.
I can’t recommend Kamuroan enough. It’s more than just a stay—it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thank you again for taking such good care of me. I’ll never forget it.
- Marija (10/5): a traditional stay you can’t miss out on - A great traditional house in a quiet street just a few minutes away from Kyomizu-dera and other touristic areas in Kyoto.
Okami-san was very sweet. She took good care of me during the stay, provided a lot of recommendations for sightseeing and dining, made onigiri so I wouldn’t go hungry while out and about and drew me a rejuvenating bath in the evenings. I had a truly relaxing holiday and was incredibly grateful for her time.
- Sally (10/5): Amazing and welcoming home! Delicious breakfast, beautiful room, and caring host - we loved it all! -
- Maurice (10/5): authenticity at Kyoto - The host is great, and she’s giving many recommendations at Kyoto. This place is situated in a very nice place in the old typical city to make great tours.
If you want to discover a typical appartement and to ask plenty of questions about Japanese ways of living, this place is a great one ! Nothing
- Duane (10/5): - "Softly, morning light
Fell upon my resting face
At Kamuro-an."
I could only stay in Kyoto for two nights, but I was most satisfied with my time at Kamuro-an. I wanted a feeling of what it was like to live in a Japanese home, and that's what I found: a place that felt like home. Ookami-san and Danna-sama made a tired traveler feel welcomed. Their local knowledge was extremely helpful, and their gentle guidance was most appreciated.
The house itself is beautiful; clean and in good repair. My room was spacious, and had everything I needed. The neighborhood was quiet and easy to walk around. You will not find a better location in Kyoto, just minutes away from the temples, shrines, parks and shops of Higashiyama and Gion. Bring your good walking shoes!
The food! I can still remember how fresh, interesting and delicious the breakfasts tasted. Breakfast with good conversation is always satisfying. I learned so much about Kyoto culture.
I will always carry with me the sense of peace and genuine kindness I felt as their guest. Even when Ookami-san laughed, trying to find a yukata to fit my big body, and then had to watch my bad dancing! (^_^)
When you are a traveler, a place to truly rest is beyond price; A hot bath is salvation. A soft futon is Heaven. In an age when so many tourists are rushing around, faces down in their cell phones, it's good to know that places like Kamuro-an still exist. Ookini, Ookami-san! *waves*
- Jordan (10/5): An authentic and beautiful stay with an exceptional host in the heart of Kyoto - The location is incredible, the staff are extremely friendly and attentive, and the room was beautiful! Nothing
- Liz (9/5): Superb - Loved the house and the wekcome. I was treated like a VIP. I felt like home. They were very nice people. Thank you for welcoming me into your home . Okini 🙏🏽
- Rebecca (10/5): A very special place - A beautiful, comfortable, quiet, spotless place that was welcoming and full of care. I loved every moment of my stay. Everything was wonderful
- Christina (10/5): Exceptional Stay in Kyoto with the nicest family there is! Okami-san and her husband were excellent hosts who made me fe - It was a beautiful japanese House near Kiyumizu-dera, traditional but also modern.
- Paul (10/5): - Our stay at Kamuro An was exceptional!! The futon beds were really comfortable and the room super clean and spacy. The host was really kind and introduced us to many aspects of Japanese home and guest culture. The breakfast was absolutely delicious. We even received Onigiris to bring on our excursions to the many sights of Kyoto. A stay at Kamuro An is highly recommended for anyone who is looking to really get in touch with Japanese culture on their journey!
- Samy (10/5): Kamuroan wa watashi no ichiban hotel desu - The owners are so sweat
- Aniza (10/5): Exceptional -
- Wenxin (8/5): - Authentic Japanese stay. Highly recommend for those who want to experience Japanese culture via homestay. Host was very nice. Various house rules applied, if you’re more of a free style person, house rules could be a bit much as there are curfews and other rules at home. If that doesn’t bother you, I would definitely recommend!
- Sebastien (10/5): We truly felt like part of the family and can’t recommend Kamuroan enough, if you are staying in Kyoto it’s an absolute - Kamuroan was one of our favourite places to stay during our trip to Japan. It’s hard to describe how truly amazing our time there was. おかみさん was a wonderful host and made our stay a truly unforgettable experience. Although we hadn’t booked meals at Kamuraon she made us onigiri to take on our day trips and was very mindful of any allergies, she even taught us how to prepare traditional matcha! おかみさん went to great lengths to ensure the perfect stay, including helping us with restaurant recommendations and bookings.
The room was incredibly spacious with the most comfortable futons; all of the facilities were very clean and of a very high standard. Every night おかみさん would run a bath for us and everything we needed was provided. Nothing, it was perfect!
- Amy (10/5): Exceptional -
- Xuefei (10/5): Such a cute accommodation! The room is spacious and clean. I really like their breakfast :) Ookini - Cute accommodation and yummy breakfast
- Crystal (10/5): Exceeded expectations, admirable Okami-san, would revisit on my next trip back to Kyoto - Days before check-in, the Okami-san was already being extremely helpful by reaching out and exchanging messages, sharing general information on the location / language / culture, giving advice on how to better get to the property, and even gathering my food allergy information in preparation for my breakfast as per my booking. Upon arrival, they were there to welcome me and take my heavy luggage bag off my exhausted hands and to my room, so that I may proceed with the check-in (accompanied by delightful light snacks) in peace. Seeing that I was falling sick, the Okami-san even provided me with medication, as well as hot tea and candy for my sore throat in my room, with the heater turned up to keep me warm. The room itself was delightful, lined with tatami mats, a quaint little table and mirror dresser on one side, and a meticulously prepared comfortable futon on the other, while the fully automated washroom was just down the hall. I was also provided with a yukata of my choice and a matching haori, which the Okami-san kindly helped me to get dressed in, and which I got to keep till the end of my stay. Every morning, the Okami-san prepared a wide spread of dishes for my breakfast, each carefully made and plated, for me to enjoy. And at night, they ran a hot bath for me to relax in after my shower. During my meal times in the dining hall, I would have long casual conversations with the Okami-san about anything and everything, and it would just be an all around homely and absolutely pleasant atmosphere to be in. Words can't describe how much I truly enjoyed my stay at this place. With the location not being near any train stations means that the next best option for getting around via public transportation would be via the buses, which is honestly not the worst thing to be fair.
- Tomás (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kseniia (10/5): Exceptional - A magnificent place! A full immersion into Japanese culture with comfort. It felt like visiting someone’s home — a vivid and memorable experience. Special thanks to Okami-san for such a warm welcome! The pleasant conversations about culture, attention to detail, delicious traditional food, and the chance to wear a yukata — all made it unforgettable. The house is filled with coziness and traditional charm. The location is also great — very close to Kiyomizu-dera and many other important places in Kyoto. I was also helped with Yamato luggage delivery — ookini! I definitely recommend this place; everyone should experience something like this at least once!
- Olivia (10/5): Nothing short of exceptional - My stay at Kamuroan was everything and more. Okami is a wonderful host, seeing the words of the amazing experiences from other guests, I knew I had to book my stay in Kyoto here. From the very beginning, I had plenty of helpful communication advising me how to get to Kamuroan, bus services, train routes etc which was handy in navigating Kyoto from a local point of view.
Rooms at Kamuroan are spacious and cosy with all the essential facilities you could need (including a shared bathroom that has a shower and bath, both of which were well stocked with toiletries and spotless). I will say the bed was very comfy despite not sleeping ryokan style at home. And onto the show-stopper… breakfast is amazing, a great deal of attention and care went into Okami’s breakfasts during my 3 night stay, I had the opportunity to try out various Japanese breakfast favourites. I have dietary requirements and Okami did her upmost to accommodate me which I greatly appreciated.
As part of an additional service, Kamuroan will even ship your luggage through Yamato to your next destination in Japan which was incredibly convenient (and saved my arms) so thank you!
In a few words, great location and an unforgettable stay for my first time in Japan. Would absolutely stay again at Kamuroan and recommend to anyone looking for an authentic Japanese experience in the heart of Kyoto, it’s really more than just a room, not everywhere you will wear your kimono and make matcha in the mornings! It was an honor to be a guest at Okami’s home, Kamuroan.
Ookini 💜🇯🇵
- Ben (10/5): A wonderful Kyoto ryokan experience! - From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by Okami-san and felt right at home. Okami-san was so warm and friendly, we had great chats both in English and Japanese, I learned how to make matcha, gave me some great suggestions on places to visit, made me onigiri to fuel me for the day ahead, and had amazake and a bath ready in the evening. She was always there to see me off in the morning and welcome me back when I returned. The futons were very warm and comfortable and I always got a good night sleep. The property is very close to Kiyomizu-dera temple so you can easily make your way there early to see the sunrise. If you're looking for an authentic ryokan experience that feels like a homestay more than a hotel stay, this is the place. I will definitely be back in the future - thank you so much for your hospitality and kindness!
- Samuli (10/5): Exceptional -
- Cinjon (4/5): Disappointing - If you're looking for a minchuku / ryokan in which you can put your stuff down, go out during the day, come back for a nice bath (that they run for you!), then this place is great and works well. The yukatas are comfortable and have good patterns, the room is spacious, and the bathtub is wonderful. If you are going to stay in during the day, maybe because you are writing a book on the side, then this is not for you.
Similarly, if you are super jetlagged and will be sleeping during the day to adjust and seeing tourist sites at night, then also not for you.
The problem is two-fold. First is that the space is quite cold without the space heater, and it's not the best. We stayed at another place afterward that had a wonderful ceiling setup that was quieter, less obtrusive, and heated the room faster. That problem is just in the winter though.
The second problem is that the hostess is extremely passive-aggressive and you're going to be exposed to at a high level if you are in the space for a longer time than tourist-traveling-to-kyoto-and-staying-in-a-minchuku-normal.
- Joseph (10/5): Cozy and clean, amazing hosts and the home cooked food comes with history. I could not of asked for a better authentic e - Cozy and clean, amazing hosts and the home cooked food comes with history. I could not of asked for a better authentic experience. Wish I could of stayed longer.
- Peter (10/5): Once in a lifetime experience, must try! - Incredible home- Okami San was welcoming and really knowledgeable of things to do around Kyoto
- Julia (10/5): I loved staying at this ryokan. The staff were the kindest people I’ve ever met. They provided me gluten free snacks (Ce - The staff were so kind! They made me breakfast and ran a warm bath for me every night. They taught me how to make traditional matcha, and were the most considerate and friendly people I’ve met in all of Japan! Nothing! All was wonderful
- Yess (10/5): Exceptional - It really is a cozy place, I felt at home, everything is very close, I would definitely come back.
- Simon (10/5): - I could write a lot about Kamuroan but I'll keep it short! Okami-san runs a wonderful ryokan. As a guest you will feel comfortable & welcomed. The rooms are lovely, the food is amazing and the hospitality is fantastic. It's also in such a lovely location in Gion, allowing early morning & late evening walks when it isn't swarming with tourists which I definitely recommend doing if you stay here.
Staying here just feels like being invited into Okami-san's wonderful home for a night or two. If you are looking for something a bit out of the norm of regular commercial hotels in the area I can't recommend staying here enough, you won't regret it.
Okini!

- Jbumble (10/5): An unforgettable experience, a fantastic place to stay - Oh my goodness where do I start with Kamuroan, what a fantastic stay! This is a small family business that provides an authentic Japanese guest-house experience in the heart of Kyoto. I paid a little more than for my other hotels on my trip to Japan, but it was worth every penny and the level of attentiveness given to you by the owners is second-to-none. The location was excellent, very close to a major tourist street and temple (Kiyomizu-dera).
I'm not sure how many guests they can accommodate in total but there were only two of us staying while I was there. I had my own large room and I had one of the best sleeps ever on the futon on the tatami. It was so warm, comfortable and quiet.
The owners provide a binder in the room with lots of information about places to visit in Kyoto, places to eat, etc. I did visit one of the places from the binder to eat and it was a good recommendation.
You must be fully prepared to engage with the experience (and the rules!) of the guest house and be respectful on your visit. It is traditional, you must not walk on the tatami in your outdoor shoes, you change into different shoes to use the toilet, and the owners will go to the effort of providing a full Japanese breakfast especially for you. You'll be asked what you like to eat and what time you'd like it to be ready. Also, there is an 23:00 curfew because the owners stay up to welcome you back in so it's probably not for you if you're going to Kyoto for late-nights.
As part of the experience, you are also given a yukata (a light-weight cotton kimono) to wear during your stay. If you want to go out, you will also be provided with an obi which will be expertly tied for you. Given people go to Kyoto and spent a lot of yen on kimono hire, this free-of-charge extra helped make this experience extra special. I loved wearing the yukata and got complimented on how nice it looked and how prettily the obi was tied from native-Japanese! You really cannot fault Kamuroan, I'm so glad I spent the money to have that experience. Wouldn't change a thing.
- Ming (10/5): Exceptional - Okami-sam is the most welcoming host I've ever had throughout all my trips! She made us feel welcomed and comfortable, and gave us comprehensive information before our arrival about transport and accommodation. We arrived late for check-in (9pm) but she waited for us outside. We opted for breakfast at her place, and they were hearty and delicious, we felt like a VIP! The whole place is clean and spotless, we can feel the passion and effort they put in to keep the place well-maintained!
Thank you Okami-san and her husband for the wonderful experience, we will definitely be back! Ookini! :D NA
Okini 🙏
- Lucile (10/5): Unforgettable and Warm Stay at Kamuroan with Okami-san in Kyoto - Our stay at the traditional Ryokan Kamuroan in Kyoto will remain etched in our memories, thanks to the exceptional hospitality of Okami-san. Always smiling and kind, she takes the time to explain and assist, with great attention to every detail, making our experience especially warm and reassuring.
Each morning, we enjoyed breakfasts in the pure Japanese tradition, carefully prepared by Okami-san, who also taught us the art of matcha tea – a precious moment that deepened our immersion in Japanese culture. We also appreciated the hot bath, a wonderful way to recover after our sightseeing days around the city.
Thanks to Okami-san’s kindness and dedication, we discovered Kyoto from an authentic and serene perspective. We highly recommend Kamuroan to anyone looking for a place where comfort meets authenticity and unparalleled hospitality. A huge thank you to Okami-san for this unforgettable stay!
- Kathryn (10/5): Okami-san is a wonderful and caring host and her home is beautiful, spotless, comfortable, and in a fantastic location f - I loved every single thing. Seriously one of the very best places I have ever stayed. I can’t think of anything I did not like. I don’t think this place would be everyone’s style (it is a very intimate home-stay type experience), but for someone who relishes this sort of experience it is perfect.
- Christopher (10/5): A delight in the heart of Kyoto - An authentic and spacious in with a warm welcome. Breakfast was a delicious, traditional selection of dishes and varied each day.
- Danny (10/5): Exceptional - Breakfast everyday was delicious, and the location of the ryokan was perfect for sightseeing, as it was within walking distance of Kiyomizu-dera. The okami was very nice and accommodating as well to individual needs.
- Natia (10/5): Exceptional - When I arrived for a late check-in on KTX from Tokyo, it really felt like coming to visit my home from the city :).
The hostess, Okami-san and her husband, are most generous, warmest people you will meet! They prepare baths, snacks, meals and amazing recommendations for you whenever you come into common space and engage with them.
I really appreciated how much they taught me about Japan and Kyoto culture specifically. Okami-san also helped me wear my kimono and taught me how to self-tie the obi belt.
The house is speckless clean, aesthetic, orderly and smells good in every corner. The 2nd floor room is spatious and gets amazing soft light if you open the sliding window. Being in such atmosphere itself is healing and relaxing.
The bath/shower room in the 1st floor may be shared but there is a sink on the 2nd floor so you can easily wash your face or brush your teeth without going to the first floor. But I do strongly recommend taking baths im the evening, especially as the hosts will prepare it with charcoal and medicinal herbs. So healing after a full day of touristing.
Breakfast is a delicious assortment of home cooked dishes made from seasonal ingredients. Select matcha is prepared and offered by the host following every breakfast. On one morning Okami-san also arranged an experience of letting you assemble your own breakfast 'maki' roll if you chose.
The location is excellent, right in Gion district surrounded by temples, tea houses, kimono rental and sales shops, snack stands and many traditional restaurants. Known as old geisha district, easy to run into maikos here, who stroll around like us, or are heading from an event to an event.
In short, stay here to feel the comfort of a real home while away from home.
I will certainly be back ~
- Zachary (10/5): Beautiful home, perfect location, and host provides a true Kyoto experience! - This was my first stay in a ryokan and the bar is now set very high. The Okami-san is incredibly generous and goes above and beyond to make your stay comfortable and memorable. The house, which you may not want to leave with how nice it is, is in the perfect location to start your day sightseeing in Gion or other parts of Kyoto. Cannot reccommend this stay to others enough!
- Ekaterina (10/5): Just come and stay here! - Authentic Japanese experience, a real Japanese home! The owner is amazing!!! Nothing- all amazing!
- Nicolas (10/5): One of the best i’ve ever had - Okami-san was very kind and caring toward me.
She was showing me every traditional manner and usage in the Ryokan.
She even suggested me some place to eat.
The traditional breakfast was amazing and it was handmade.
- Claus (10/5): Unique japanese Ryokane experience in a top location - Top location, unique Japanese Ryokan experience; great personal contact with the owner, great Japanese breakfast- a unique experience; Rooms are nice and big; the shared shower and toilette was always clean and empty; nice hot bath offered in the evening;
- Kelly (10/5): - Our family of four had a wonderful stay at Kamuro An. Our downstairs room was large, with space for four futons, a separate sitting area, and a sink/dressing room. The toilet, shower and bath were down the hall, which did not bother us at all. From Kamuro An, we could walk to Kiyomizu Dera temple, Gion and more sights on the east side of Kyoto. Best of all was the hospitality. Okami-san was so warm and kind, and she enjoyed teaching us about Japanese customs. Her breakfasts were beautiful and delicious. I had a Japanese grandmother to feed me when I was young, and it was fun to see my children enjoy some of the same foods that I loved as a child. Thank you so much for helping us make new family memories in your lovely home in Japan!
- Trent (10/5): Once in a lifetime magical experience. - I could not begin to describe this experience in words. It is something that you must truely experience yourself in person.
Ookini provided me with an experience that I believe was very unique and beautiful. From her kind mother like nurturing nature, to her insight into the customs, culture and traditions of Japan. It felt like I was living with someone who I’ve known for years yet only really known for days.
I would say that you must at least experience two nights. Please select the breakfast at least one morning. Although, even if you do not overly like Japanese food, please try it and respect the culture as it is very important whilst providing a very unique (and delicious) insight into their local foods.
The home is absolutely beautiful. From the original cedar supports to original tatami. If you wish to experience like a “local” then please book Kamuroan.
I hope one day I return to this place and visiting you again.
Thank you Ookini for providing me with an experience of a lifetime. Nothing
- Rachel (10/5): Exceptional - This was an extraordinary pleasant experience. I highly recommend Kamuroan when you are looking for a ryokan with an unique atmosphere and peacefull exposure, with a very well prepared and tasting breakfast, where you will experience various Japanees traditions and where the Okami has a true interest in their guests, It was all above expectations. The ryokan is at a top location to one of the best temples of Kyoto, is close to down town Gion and is not far from kyoto train station I wish I could have stayed longer
- Kiara (10/5): Exceptional -
- Noemi (9/5): Superb - Excellent experience and owner is excellent Very well!
- Stéphane (10/5): Exceptional -
- Bryant (10/5): - Staying at Kamuroan was like visiting extended family that make you feel at home. The Okami-san (female manager of a ryokan) is super welcoming and thoughtful about giving her guests a wonderful stay. She's passionate about hosting as well as sharing Japanese culture through her traditional home, delicious breakfasts, fun conversations, and more. At the same time, she also does a great job giving guests their own space to experience and discover Kyoto for themselves.
Kamuroan was the most comfortable stay in my 2 weeks hopping around Japan for the first time (including expensive hotels and other guesthouses/bnbs) and a top highlight of my trip to Kyoto. It's in a great neighborhood--walkable to temples, shops, and restaurants--while still being quiet and calm. The high ratings and positive reviews are well-deserved. Less than 3 weeks later, I already want to go back.
Ookini, Okami-san!
- John (10/5): Our Favourite Place During Our Time in Japan! - Okami-san was our favourite part of our stay. She was so hospitable and nice to us. Her breakfasts were amazing so I highly recommend booking for the food. She was also very helpful in suggesting things to do during our stay in Kyoto. She made sure we didn't stumble into any tourist traps and went to local/trusted places for gifts and food. Overall, Okami-san took great care of us!
As for the accommodations, we were very impressed. We loved the traditional look of the house and everything was well maintained and very clean.
The bathroom was the best we had during our entire time in Japan. The toilets were clean and the most advanced we encountered. For a foreigner who never experienced Japanese toilets before, this is the best you're going to get.
The bathtub at Kamuroan was also amazing. Okami-san prepared the bath for us before we got back so after a long day of sightseeing we could relax and wind down for the evening. The tub is temperature controlled so it stayed at the perfect temperature during your whole session.
We loved our stay at Kamuroan and we highly recommend booking a stay here as well! Nothing. Everything was perfect!
- Kaitlynn (10/5): Exceptional - The stay was AMAZING. So very comfortable. Just like other reviews mentioned, the hosts do a great job of making you feel a true Japanese experience! The care that went into explaining any questions I might have had about Kyoto/Japan was amazing. The effort put into breakfast was AMAZING. They made me feel like family. I will definitely be back.
- John (10/5): AN EXCEPTIONAL EXPERIENCE - Okami and her husband were delightful hosts. The breakfasts she prepared were delicious with so many new flavours for us to experience. The location very close to the temple allowed us to visit multiple times and early before the crowds. Okami organised bikes and taxis for us and taught us some of the local language and customs. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE E PERIENCE. We found the futon mattress a bit firm for our usual taste but we were happy to have experienced the traditional Japanese way of sleeping in a lovely room.
- Morgan (10/5): Okami-san will treat you like royalty! - Okami-san is so pleasant, courteous, attentive to your needs and her customer service is absolutely impeccable. Anything you need, she will accommodate and with such enthusiasm and genuine happiness.
Frequently things would appear to be refreshed, replaced or prepared as if by magic, but it is due to her great efforts to make your stay perfection.
I can not give enough praise to Okami-san, words don't do her justice.
Don't be worried about how to act, what to wear, or rules of the house, as Okami-san will explain everything to you when you arrive.
The bed is a futon inside a tatami mat room and it was so clean and quiet just like an oasis in the traditional area of Kyoto.
Okami-san will send you off warmly and welcome you back when you come home. I only stayed a few nights and it is an absolute highlight of my trip.
Highly, highly recommend staying here if you come to Kyoto.
- Eric (10/5): Exceptional - My wife and I booked this stay due to the rating on booking.com and I can honestly say that Kamuroan exceeded my expectations. It is perfectly located in a historical district of Kyoto and many popular sites are walking distance. The host "Okamisan" was so pleasant in our stay. She was very helpful in helping us decide where and what to do in Kyoto. Her traditionally made breakfast each morning was an incredible way to start our day. She very passionately taught us a great deal about Japan and its culture. I would recommend this stay to anyone wanting a traditional ryokan experience! We already miss Okamisan and we can't wait to return.
- Drew (10/5): Amazing, the highlight to a wonderful trip to Japan. - Okami-san was an amazing and gracious host, she exceeded all of our expectations and provided a comfortable environment for us to enjoy our stay in Kyoto. Her breakfast and willingness to teach us true Japanese culture was amazing. Most of all her commitment to our health and wellbeing during our stay were highlights. I’m grateful to have met her and stayed at her ryokan. Nothing the stay was amazing.
- Filip (10/5): Fabulous Experiance - From the first minute of the stay You fell like being part of the Family which is first time in Japan that’s why Okami and her husband want to show You as much as they can about Japanese culture but most of all fell best of the best in Kyoto… and then the breakfast comes what is cherry on the cake :)
- Jessica (10/5): Exceptional -
- Moonis (10/5): Exceptional - The host okami was great and really helpful. Bathrooms were clean. Room was spacious and breakfast was ready on time. Liked everything in the stay. I don't have anything negative to say about my stay
- Weber (10/5): PERFECT! - We don’t know where to start! Everything is just perfect. The best was the staff: so friendly and sweet! You don’t feel like in a hotel, you feel like you’re in a japanese home. There is only 2 rooms, the staff is always there for you and your wishes. You can talk to them anytime, they make you a hot bath, put sweets in your room, prepare you a lunch box, and and and…
The ryokan is maintained very clean and has a lot of japanese decoration. The breakfast is authentic japanese and it’s filling you for the whole day. I really enjoyed talking to the staff, you can talk in english and learn about japanese culture or just have a nice conversation partner. If you wish to be spoiled and feel an authentic japanese experience come here and enjoy! we would come again anytime! Best regards!
- Katia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lisa (10/5): - This was an incredible experience. 10 out of 10 recommend.
- Brendan (10/5): - Kamuro An was fantastic. I was taken care of and loved my experience here. Make sure to ask for a traditional Japanese breakfast or maybe some onigiri or homemade udon. I recommend this place wholeheartedly. It was genuinely fantastic!
- Holcomb (10/5): Fantastic, unique, cultural experience in Kyoto - This was such a wonderful, unique experience. The breakfast was so cool - what a way to sample all of the local dishes - and the hostess was exceptional. We spent 9 days in Japan and the day we spent at the Ryokan was a cultural highlight. Please be aware that this is a very traditional stay, including traditional Japanese sleeping arrangements and home rules. That being said, if you’re looking for such an experience, our time at Kamuroan was amazing.
- Quinn (10/5): A welcoming and warm environment far away from home. - The owners were amazing and friendly. The conversations we were able to have were so much fun! The traditional kyoto breakfast was very different but it was tasty and definitely worth trying. Their home was warm and inviting and I would book here again!
- Alain (10/5): Exceptional -
- Andrea (10/5): Exceptional - Breakfast was delicious, changed daily and very generous in proportion. My hostess made me feel at home anticipating every need and such a lovely charming person
- Megat (10/5): Wonderful experience! - The stay was wonderful. We love the place, and Okami-san's hospitality exceeded our expectations. Place was clean, and spacious. Warm yukata and beds. Homemade breakfast was really delicious. Walking distance to Kiyomizudera. Thank you for the amazing experience! Definitely want to stay here again if we revisit Kyoto in the future. None
- Nicolas (10/5): Exceptional - I really had an awesome stay at the Kamuroan Hotel. It's centrally located near the Kiyomizu-dera shrine, it's clean and quite at nighttime and the owners (wife and her husband) are super friendly. They will make sure you feel comfortable, and even though their English is not the best (it's rather a mixture of English and Japanese haha), they explained to me some aspects of Japanese culture and how to behave in a traditional Ryokan, you can even wear a traditional Japanese dress.
Also the breakfast prepared by the wife is superb!
If you really want to experience some traditional Japanese accommodation, I can highly recommend staying at Kamuroan hotel
