Guest Reviews
- Kim (8/5): Loved the place - Beautiful, location was great Confusing on getting room, staff not in site for arrivals
- Colin (8/5): -
- Kelvin (7/5): It was a fun experience -
- Stephanie (5/5): just ok - location was great! Value was great! host was a bit short and not a great communicator. staff on the Grounds were amazing and did everything they could to help out. host was short and not a great communicator i booked on bookings .com and i stated to call or text a few hours before arrival. I did so and it took ages for a response once i did get a response ,it was to say" i don't have a booking for you". this all happening while i am driving to the location. I had to pull over a look for my booking # and info before he was able to find my booking ( i booked 3 rooms) . I also wanted to get the keys or an entry code and i was told no as the room was not available until 4 that's fine but we were going to a football game and just wanted to be able to come straight in and not wait around. (still had to wait around for someone to come open the door. we left for dinner again and still had to call late at night for someone to let us in. Not sure why a code could not be given to the guest to access the building. also it was advertised as free breakfast coffee/tea and pastries. no pasties aka no breakfast to be seen of during the advertised time.
- Daniel (7/5): -
- Thomas (10/5): A memory my wife and I will cherrish. - We felt it an honor and a privilege to stay in this historic mansion. At such a low price, what a bargain. The breakfast at the castle was "BEST EVER" provided by gourmet chef.
- Deborah (8/5): Beautiful home, misleading booking site info, cold cold rooms with entry door left unlocked often. Includes breakfast wa - We loved the idea of repurposing an old home into a place to rent overnight. Not a hotel really, but stately, attractive, and spacious. The bite sized breakfast included, but located at the sister property looked impressive, if tiny. The booking.com site gives you a choice of rooms that you are not actually renting. The booking.com site needs to be updated to reflect the actual room you are receiving. There was no private in-bathroom shower or tub as pictured , just a tub in the (lake Como) actual bedroom. There was no place for the toilet paper in the toilet room, unless you wanted to twist around and find it behind you on the toilet tank or leave it on the floor. The room was about 61 degrees, and the thermostat would not raise the temperature at all. The bed was extremely firm, which I personally don’t mind, but since it is memory foam, if you sleep too close to the edge of the bed, you may fall off. The covers were a bit short, as well as lightweight, so we had trouble keeping the covers on top of us during the cold night. SECURITY ISSUE: when checking in at the sister property, the Henderson Castle, we were given a card with a code for the door of the Upjohn house so that we could enter. I am assuming the door then locks behind you when you come in. However, upon leaving, some guests do not realize that you must press the lock button once you have exited. Not pressing this button leaves the door completely open to anyone who wants to wander in. We returned to the uptown house a few times, not needing the key code at all, because previous guests left without re-locking the door . Please include instructions to lock the door when leaving by pushing the lock button. With so many wonderful antiques in this old home, I would think they would want to secure the premises a little better.
- John (4/5): It was odd, different, strange. It required very low expectations, and a sense of adventure for it to not seem awful. - It is interesting- the home was definitely unique and had many fun paintings to examine. There is no onsite attendant, it was dark and a bit scary upon first arrival given we got in from the airport at 11:30 PM. The instructions for entry were unclear, the front door lock did not unlock - the electronic lock was broken. The room we were in is well-suited for a single male traveler who fusses not about the sink with a very slow drain, lack of a bathroom door so toilet use is not private. The low-rent apartments directly behind the property were the source of some concerning sounds in the middle of the night. Is the hotel really up to code? I have my doubts but hey - I am not a qualified city safety inspector so maybe it is. Parking is strange. It is probably OK to park on the street but, it’s a big lot with very little parking. There were day or two-day old donuts left out on top of a chest in the hallway. Nothing else.
- Emmalee (10/5): Amazing stay, can’t wait to stay again. - The bed was so comfortable. We didn’t want to leave the bed, it just sucks you in! We didn’t have hand soap, but hand sanitizer was available. There’s also body wash provided so we could use that until we bought our own.
- NEHA (10/5): -
- Heather (10/5): - The nostalgia. Decor was amazing. Parking was a bit difficult but understandable.
- Johanson (9/5): Portofino room - Very nice staff, super friendly and helpful. Beautiful house. Weird having a toilet just in the room with no separation
- Debra (9/5): A really beautiful property with congenial hosts in a great location. - Breakfast was a continental style breakfast with delicious choices. Very nice! The overall ambiance was lovely- a truly beautiful old mansion in a historic district, walkable to city downtown. The staff was extremely helpful - especially Karissa who was very patient and kind with multiple questions. While it was fine with me as a solo traveler, the soaking tub in the bedroom (not the space with the toilet) might challenge some other kinds of occupants. The only other minor quibble is that the carpet, while beautiful and age appropriate to the space, is very worn in spots and rough on bare feet getting out of bed.
- Cheryl (10/5): -
- Patricia (10/5): We will be back. staff and everyone there was great. - It was beautiful my granddaughter and I were so impressed Nothing it was just absolutely perfect
- Jacklyn (7/5): - Bed and breakfast was beautiful. Our bathroom sucked. Hot water took forever to get hot. No shower. They also didn't have our reservations down and wanted me to pay more then I was supposed to. The breakfast was really cute but not good at all.. hotel breakfast are a lot better. Was not impressed with the breakfast at all.
- joe (8/5): This is a very kool period house to stay in. If you need more pampering go to holiday inn. - the continental breakfast was good. the breakfast i paid for was excellent......the house was very private and a b and b format.....then you have use of the Henderson castle up the road which is wonderful....I have stayed at both and would do so again. having an open bathroom (bathtub and toilet) inside your bedroom was different as a couple.......but it is period correct along with the rest of the house amenities......the bathtub was relaxing....with a good bottle of red....and we used our own Netflix account for media......
- Loretta (7/5): Beautiful old home, nice woodwork, and quiet area. Would return again - Beautiful home huge, quiet, and clean. The tub/shower, leaked having water ti run over the floor.Someone sat outside in their car which was creepy. Hard to get a hold of the host, took several days to respond back to me, didn’t answer the phone.
- Mary (1/5): Don't Count on Actually Getting a Place to Stay - I would give a raing of zero if that was possible: I wouldn't know how my room was, because my reserved room was not available to me when I arrived to check in. Day of, I received a reiteration of welcome and instruction of how to check in. The woman at Henderson Castle tried to help me (Henderson Castle was where I was supposed to go to check in for Upjohn), but Francois was un-reachable and she could find no record of a room for me. My stay was non-existent. Despite my reservation being confirmed and my money taken before my arrival, the reality was that there was no actual room available for me. Francois was un-reachable to resolve issues and has not refunded my money. I was in town for my son's graduation but was not able to spend the night. I am disappointed. I had hoped that the Upjohn would become a place for me to regularly book in the future, but now I won't.
Francois has not replied to my asking for a refund. Can booking.com help?
- Sean (9/5): Great place to stay while visiting WMU getting in the local history and beautiful location - It was so beautiful and loved being in the Upjohn. Also loved the Henderson Castle breakfast There wasn’t much wrong that I could see. Your staff is friendly and accommodating
- Van (7/5): Beautiful house in a lovely spot, but super weird vibes from the whole organization. - Beautiful house (and the castle at another location where you check in is even more stunning). Neat vintage home from 1877! All in all, we ended up with a place to sleep for the night, very convenient location Weird layout. There’s a bathtub IN the room with you, no curtain so basically not at all inviting for a shower. Also, very unprofessionally run. First off we had to check in at a completely separate place about a mile from Upjohn House. We had a car so not too bad but what if you were coming from the airport by Uber? Next, when we were being checked in she asked us what price we had been quoted? While I was looking up my Booking.com receipt she stated a number over $100 higher and asked if that was okay. When I showed her the Booking price she accepted it but still a weird thing. Finally, when we eventually got to Upjohn House we had been told the key would be in the door to our room but it wasn’t. We had to call the number given to us and the person did arrive quickly (about ten minutes) to be fair, but again still weird.
- Fred (5/5): Quirky, pretty, but terrible bed and bath. - The building was quirky but beautiful! Filled with ornate furniture. Very funky. The bed was very uncomfortable!
The toilet and bath (not a shower) were placed in the corner of the room with no barrier other than a folding screen that did not hide the entire area. It was awkward since I was sharing the room with my teenage child!
- Jesse (9/5): Superb -
- Jane (1/5): I recommend that "Booking.com" take this B & B off your list. - WE did not stay there because no one was there. We tried calling the number we were given and just got a voice mail. We were left high and dry. Doors were locked and no one inside.
- Brand (5/5): Beautiful place, nice people with good intentions, Upjohn could use more attention though. - Beautiful home, friendly staff Staff at Henderson Castle is nice, Nate is nice, he is a caretaker of Upjohn. There are no staff members at Upjohn and it feels a bit unorganized. The first room we were given had not been cleaned, the toilet was a wreck from a previous user. We were given a different room that was decent but there were spots on the floor that I wiped up and an unsightly/inconvenient situation with the power cord running from a closet to the television that was the shared power source for the heater and the coffee maker.
- Philip (1/5): Avoid - Location. it was in Kalamazoo. One room key only
Toilet in room with no wall to seperate it
Smoke detector beeped all night
Tv not at end of bed, but at side so you had to face sideways to see it
Big bulky dark furniture
Check-in at another building
Breakfast at another building. The B&B brekafast was a stale croissant
No guard rails around tub
No shower
Bathroom down the hall didn't lock
Bed was old and uncomfortable
No bottled water, tissue, room refrigerator, no anything
Statue of Buddha on toilet
- Harlan (1/5): Horrible, unsatisfactory, very disappointing - Nothing. They didn’t explain that all of the amenities were located at the Henderson Castle, plus I still haven’t received my deposit back yet and the property manager has been very rude . He’ basically called me a liar even after he received the verification of our stay. The night of our check in we waited over two hours before we were checked in. The whole experience was very disappointing. I felt that us being an interracial couple was a great deal to with the situation. They were no as hospitable towards us they were the other guest( were all white)! I will never book with them and not recommend them
- Harlan (1/5): Not impressed, very disappointed. - It was very clean, and comfortable. The two gentlemen were very pleasant. My husband was locked out . We weren’t had no clue we were locked in the for the evening. In the brochure on line it explains the Upjohn house as having the spa, massages, hit tub, heated pool and sauna at that facility. We never got to enjoy any of it because we were never told until after 8:30 it was at the Henderson castle. We never received our robes or slippers, complimentary breakfast. Plus I walked in with my reservation and confirmation on my phone they had there for over an hour then completed our reservation. Our time was wasted, and what I believe to be vital information wasn’t not given. We definitely didn’t get our money’s worth
- Steven (10/5): Very nice, very relaxing. - Very relaxing environment, both in terms of room comfort and the comings and goings in the house. Almost felt like I was staying at a friends the way it's set up.
- Paul (4/5): Very disappointed. - Location. Staff couldn’t find my booking even though I had a confirmation number and further documentation. Was told that I would need to take it up with Booking .com.Charged me full rate even though I had booked at a lower rate through Booking.com. Upon checkout, no one was at the main desk. I wanted a receipt so that I had documentation just in case I had paid twice through both Booking.com and Upjohn House/Henderson Castle. An individual finally noticed me waiting and came to assist me. She had no idea how to generate a receipt so she contacted someone by phone who told her to take down my name and email address and one would be emailed to me. It’s been two days now and I have not received it. Staff just seemed confused throughout all of my interactions with them. WiFi didn’t work. I really wanted to like this place, but I can’t recommend it at all.
- Paul (7/5): Good - I was very disappointed in the price switch. When I booked the room, it was confirmed at $162.30. When we got to the Henderson Castle to check in, we were charged $268.18 for the overnight stay.
- Eduardo (7/5): Cozy Historic Stay close to Downtown - Location is great if you are wanting to be closer to the downtown, it unfortunately rained during our stay so we had to drive around, but you can tell the community around there likes to walk. Bed was really comfortable, staff was very nice at both Henderson Castle and UpJohn, really quiet if you just want to chill out in your room. Parking for UpJohn is extremely limited, first night wasn't awful, but once more people checked in, you would most likely have to resort to street parking, which isn't awful, but the road could be a little busy. The room we stayed in didn't have a shower and the bathtub was out in the open in the room. I believe there was a shared bathroom that could be used, but I am unsure as we weren't really given the rundown of the facilities and even then, it was just a bathtub in that shared bathroom. I am unsure if another room had a shower.
- Ziolkowski (2/5): Would not stay here - Location Poor conversion of an old house into a B&B, by example the toilet and bathtub were located in bedroom directly behind bed, no wall or partition. Doors did not feel secure and there were big gaps beneath and between doors. Place had a strange smell. I ended up not staying there.
- Rebecca (4/5): Disappointing -
- Mary (10/5): Beautiful, unique, relaxing and fun! - Superb! I adored the decorations, beautiful accommodations, antique furnishings, history, grounds, friendly and knowledgeable staff, amenities and attention to detail. There were many intriguing details from the ceiling murals to the unique stain glass. I felt as if I had traveled through time. Francois is an excellent host and chef. The Henderson Castle and UpJohn are truly gems. I can’t wait to plan my next visit.
- Lisa (8/5): Pleasant - I didn’t actually get to stay here. Would’ve been the only guest. The Henderson Inn put me up there instead. Owned by the same entity. Got to UpJohn house and no cars. Doors locked. No staff. Knocked and knocked with no answer. On the 4th call, someone from the Henderson Castle, answered and told me I was supposed to check in at the Henderson Castle. This was not indicated to me in the instructions from Booking. Com. So I had to pick up my luggage get back in the car and drive to Henderson Castle to check in. I would’ve been the only one at the UpJohn House. So the Henderson Castle people offered to put me up there instead, at the same price. And I was fine with that. Both properties are beautiful and historical and haunted.
- Dawn (8/5): One Night Only - The location was perfect for what we wanted. I love old historical
Properties and this property met that. It’s pretty and there are some original features that are
Great
Also loved and appreciated the Keurig coffee maker in each room w coffee and cream (1) and sugar (tons). 1. We were not told ahead that we needed to actually check in at the Henderson Castle, which was about a mile or so away.
2. We were unable to get a room with a fully functional shower. The one room, the shower was an amazing and original shower that Nate couldn’t get to fully work - overhear spicket wouldn’t turn on. The one we ended up w had a tub at the foot of the bed - with a hand held shower fixture. When we went to shower the next morning, the water wouldn’t get hot.
3. For the breakfast part of B&B you had to drive over to the Henderson Castle. Breakfast looked to be a continental style. Actual hot food was served at the Castle as well but at an extra charge. I’ve stayed in B&B where breakfast was included and was always amazing.
The Upjohn really is an over flow property and not set up to receive guests. The check in was disorganized and the people on site didn’t really seem to know what rooms were available and what was functioning. Nate was very friendly and hospitable but didn’t seem to have a grasp on what rooms had what working Bath/showers.
This was great because we only stayed one night. Any more than that and we probably would have checked out and gone elsewhere.
This property was walkable to the downtown Mall area and we had a lovely dinner w friends at the Beer Exchange. It convenient to the highways - somewhat - and most of the fun offered in Kalamazoo.
- Craig (9/5): Superb -
- Vincent (8/5): Very good -
- Km (8/5): Very good - There was no breakfast. The host did provide fresh milk upon request for an in room coffee maker.
The bed was comfortable and the room very quiet. Arrival instructions
- Conni (4/5): I wish I could have stayed. Maybe next time I will not use Booking.com - The owner was very nice. Booking .com overbooked the rooms. When we arrived, a guest gave us the owners number and owner informed us of the over booking and apologized. Beautiful place but we had no where to stay at 7pm. Very unfortunate. The place was gorgeous!
- David (8/5): Beautiful building, not quite finished yet - Very clean with comfortable bed Bathroom in room was odd. toilet 3 feet from bed Tub 1 foot behind bed, I prefer shower which I had to wait for as it was in one of the common bathrooms in the hall
- Craig (10/5): Will be back - It was a beautiful house decorated so elegantly
- Sarah (5/5): Passable - Kind staff, comfortable bed, unique house! Exposed nails that we stepped on when entering the sun room.
- Drakkar (10/5): Exceptional - Very clean and spacious. Love it
- Catherine (10/5): Will come back and stay again!!! - Location, cleanliness, and staff were great!
- Elyse (2/5): Not as advertised - The location was good and we could walk downtown. It seems like it will one day be a decent bed and breakfast but that day is not today. The amenities were not as advertised. It is in the middle of renovations and it very much felt like a bait and switch. There was one shared bathroom among guests that was finished and the other only had a working toilet. There were paint chips in our bed and the lamps weren't even plugged in. On the bright side, the fan worked.
