Guest Reviews

- Koen (9/5): Leuk huis, aardige verhuurder. Gave Noorse ervaring. - De locatie was perfect. Midden in de natuur. Onwijs leuk oud Noors huis.

- Cees (9/5): Most interesting and atmospheric accomodation - We stayed in a traditional Norwegian19th century cottage. Decorated with traditional furniture. You get a glimps of how living was a century ago. Terje was a very friendly and attentive host. The cottage was spacious and comfortable. A great place to explore the city of Oslo and its surroundings.
- Janne (10/5): Fantastic experience - Staying at Hallingstua is a unique adventure that I can 100% recommend! There’s so much heritage and hidden stories to explore, while the house still provides all the comfort you could ask for. The host is very kind and friendly and the surroundings are stunning. It’s possible to go swimming in a beautiful lake which is only a five minutes walk away as well as endless hiking possibilities. If you wish for a memorable stay in Oslo, look no further!
- Meing (10/5): Amazing - A good experience to stay in a traditional Norwegian house. Nice neighbourhood with tracking paths to a nearby beautiful lake.
- Pryors (7/5): Super cool historic home, Fantastic host, amazing location. - Our host was very friendly, helpful, and quick to respond to us. We loved this old historic home and the cultural artifacts inside. It really gave us a flavor for what life in Norway was like 150-200 years ago. The location was great too - it backs right up to the forest where there are many trails to hike, including a trail taking us to the Vettakollen viewpoint where we had the best view of the city of Oslo below. I hate to leave a complaint because the host was truly amazing and the property itself is very unique and full of character. That said, I do want to share a few things from our experience that might help future guests and the host as they continue to improve the space.
A group of four of us stayed for three nights. On the first night, the shower drain backed up after the very first use, flooding the entire bathroom. Unfortunately, the rest of us weren't able to shower that night. We had to contact our host late in the evening, but he responded quickly and kindly, and arranged for a plumber first thing in the morning. The issue was fixed promptly and we had no further plumbing problems during our stay.
The bathroom is located in a very dark basement and has minimal lighting. It’s also missing a few common amenities like a trash can, adequate lighting, a hairdryer, shower shelving for toiletries, a large mirror, and hooks for wet towels. We also encountered two very large black spiders in the bathroom—maybe the dim lighting helped us not notice more!
My husband and I stayed in the upstairs bedroom, and having to go down two floors in the middle of the night to use the bathroom was inconvenient, especially since part of the route includes a ladder with no handrail.
I understand that part of the charm of this property is the 1800s-style experience, and that’s something we really appreciated. Still, a few subtle modern touches could make it more comfortable for guests—like some cozy seating, a hidden or discreet television, and improved lighting throughout the home—without sacrificing the historic ambiance.
Again, the host was wonderful, and I hope this feedback is taken in the spirit of constructive criticism. The stay was memorable, and with just a few adjustments, it could be even better.
- Jackson-wild (10/5): A unique place to stay- a piece of old Norway - We loved the historic nature of the house and enjoyed hearing its story from Terje. The proximity of the woodland and a lake added to the enchantment as well as the kindness of our hosts. Having a car would be an advantage as the nearest public transport is the metro which is a mile away downhill. Can't think of anything we didn't like except the stairs down to the bathroom, but then we are 80 +!
- Cyril (10/5): This is a quintessentially Norwegian stay that brings you back in time and I can’t wait to come back - Amazing location, accessible nature essentially on your doorstep - you leave the house, walk 10 meters and you’re in wild nature. At the same time, the nearest T Bane station is a nice 10 min walk.
The place itself is something else; if you ever make it to Oslo’s renowned Folkemuseum, rest assured that this property is a living museum and much better than what you will see at the Folkemuseum. It took me a good hour just roaming around the house looking at all the things. The owners are a friendly welcoming bunch so it’s an all winner. I’m already planning my next trip - this time in winter! No complaints whatsoever.
- Matteo (10/5): Very nice! - Very easy to check-in and check-out and the guests were very nice!
- Doug (9/5): Wonderful hosts and stay - Wonderful hosts
Authentic traditional Norwegian
- Natasha (10/5): Wonderful experience and wish we could have stayed longer - Brilliant property to stay in. Amazing building and friendly host. Nothing
- Carmel (10/5): Exceptional - Very friendly host and very informative about the local area. Beautiful home and surroundings. Would definitely recommend
- Maria-cristina (10/5): Living in a museum - You feel like living in a museum. The house and its story are amazing. N/A
- Johanna (10/5): A wonderful home full of Norwegian folk history - This is an absolutely unique place to stay. Pretty much everything you see is more than 200 years old. Nothing ordinary. An aesthetic and inspiring experience for all senses.
A great experience for adults and older kids who love history, folk culture and Norwegian way of life outdoors as the wandering routes start right outside.
The housing area is very nice with great views and beautiful houses.
The pictures are accurate.
