Guest Reviews
- Kim (10/5): Amazing stay in the mountains - The lady of the ryokan was so sweet & thoughtful! We were so glad with the service we received. The accommodation was perfectly neat, authentic and we enjoyed the private onsens. The meals were amazing and the quality of the meat was incredible. /
- Jillian (9/5): Quiet, calm, delicious, blissfully boring retreat - The rooms were clean, spacious, and comfortable. Dinner and breakfast were delicious - especially the grilled beef with miso paste. The bus stops right out front, which made our arrival from Takayama and our trip up to the ropeway very easy. The outdoor onsen are beautiful and private, which was perfect for our family with two young girls. We had the place literally to ourselves (I guess July is not peak season!) so it was VERY quiet. We only saw one staff member the whole time but she was sweet and accommodating - even did our laundry for a small fee. This was fine for us, but there is literally nothing to do. The hotel is not near any other restaurant or even hiking trails. The river is out front and you can hear it from the room, but down a big hill that’s protected by guardrails - no way to get down. But, as a stop in the middle of a very busy trip, and an opportunity to relax and recharge (and take a trip up to the ropeway) - this was wonderful
- Liv (9/5): Great ryokan to relax - The private onsens are amazing, very clean and peaceful. The room is spacious and overall the ryokan is very well kept and relaxing. The food was fresh and good. We only saw one person working at the property and she was very friendly and efficient. The futons are the thin ones so it can be a bit umcomfortable for people not used to it.

- David (10/5): This is a beautiful place to stay full of traditional Japanese touches and the private onsens are a great treat - Although it has a retro feel I enjoyed the comfort and service immensely. The private onsen was so welcome and pleasurable The lighting for the vanity could be upgraded
- Nicolas (10/5): -

- Christopher (10/5): Nice private onsens. The location is very nice and secluded. Staff was very friendly - The onsens were really nice. I appreciated the simplicity of the reservation system as well.
- Danielle (8/5): - Onsens privativos muito agradáveis.
Opção de solicitar refeições. N/A
- Ricardo (10/5): - The lady who welcomed us is so friendly and sweet! The facillity was beautifull and very clean! We had a room for more then 2 people. The room was very cozy and clean.
Downstairs u have the diningrooms. This was also very clean and looks beautifull. They even think of people who cant sit like japanese people do. They have an deeper gap for the legs.
The food, oh this was so good! U have good choises of food. And it tasted homemade. We had the meat and the vega menu. Both were very tasty, the meat was so tender.
They have 4 onsens. 2 inside and 2 outside. We tries the 2 outside ones. The water was like the friendly lady said, hot. The relaxation is on top!
I would defently recommend this for u if its on your route! Nothing!
- Ofer (10/5): Enjoying Onsen - Wonderful Onsen with private pools. Two magnificent outside pools. The rooms are spacious, clean, and comfortable.
The staff is helpful and very pleasant.
It is a great place to stay in.
- Zoe (9/5): - A lovely peaceful place, perfect for unwinding and being looked after. There was a choice of 4 private onsens you could book out. Rooms were a good size and comfortable. Food was delicious and good portion sizes with local dishes. The area is quite isolated with no ATMs or corner shops, so be prepared and take what you need with you.
- Sascha (10/5): Liebevoll geführtes, kleines Ryokan in ruhiger Lage - Liebevoll geführtes, kleines Ryokan in ruhiger Lage.
Molto consigliato.
- Tenuunzaya (9/5): - The room and area was quiet. Nice escape from busy Japan travel. The food was delicious and had a home made quality to it. The private onsen was a nice touch. Truly the highlight of my Japan trip. The blanket was blowing dandruff or some type white dusty things when moved
- Alexander Lawrence (9/5): - Staff was super kind and helpful
Breakfast was delicious 😋
Diner was amazing
Very good English skills
They were reactive to my questions on booking
- Phoebe (10/5): Exceptional - Hakuunsou, whilst being more “remote” from Takayama, was the perfect balance we needed for our trip into the mountains. The ryokan was quaint, and very well kept. The host lady was very kind, welcoming and helpful. The room was spacious and comfortable, and the onsens were magical!
We found Haluunsou to be well positioned as we were able to access both the Shinhotaka Ropeway, and Takayama during our stay via the local bus. If you are short on time, the location might not suit your needs. It was perfect for us as we stayed 2nights.
- Sai (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent. The private onsens, the surroundings, the rooms and the location, everything was just perfect.
- Wolfgang (10/5): 100/10 want to go back. - The owner was so nice and the onsen felt great! They made delicious food and the rooms were very nice.
- Joeuk2020 (9/5): Great Onsen, excelent value for money, remote and quite. - The location is exceptionally tranquil, nestled far from urban noise and surrounded by nature. The sight of monkeys climbing nearby mountains adds a truly magical touch to the experience.
The onsen is outstanding—particularly welcoming to guests with tattoos, which is a rare and appreciated feature. As tourists, we found the atmosphere deeply traditional, peaceful, and unlike anything we typically encounter.
The service was warm and attentive, and the food was delicious. Overall, an excellent experience and great value for money. There isn’t much to criticise here. While the property may feel slightly dated in terms of modern amenities—evoking a nostalgic 1980s charm—that’s part of its unique character. Its vintage atmosphere adds to the overall experience rather than detracting from it.
- Ben (10/5): Quiet and welcoming ryokan - Very friendly host. Amazing outdoor private onsen. Hida beef dinner was perfect.
- Sari (10/5): Excellent - The loveliest woman took care of everything and everything was amazing. The food as well was exceptional! I loved the location, right next to the bus stop, but you have to love a quiet place.
- Joana (10/5): Exceptional - The food was excellent, the outdoor onsen was amazing, and the lady who served us was incredibly kind and helpful (we left something on the bus, and she went out of her way to help us recover it). A truly lovely place!
- Alan (8/5): A lovely spot in the mountains -
- Shahar (10/5): Exceptional - A great host, with a very worm hospitality. A beautiful place with private onsens. The meals were amazing! We stayed for 3 nights and we highly recommend :)
- Pam (9/5): Excellent outdoor onsen, no queuing, high in mountains, off the main road, parking on-site - Ready access to Onsens with no queueing, although it seems that maybe only three parties were staying on the night that we were there. Cherry blossom season is later at this altitude, which was a pleasant discovery. It is worth stressing this in the description of the ryokan. It would attract visitors to the ryokan, who could not make the peak cherry blossom season in earlier April. Good location for the mountains, off the main road (which was a bypass with little traffic, so not noisy). Close access to the Shinhotaka ropeway which went up to >2000m where it was snowing, while at lower altitudes it was drizzling. The Japanese food was very interesting, both dinner and breakfast. Only one thing. The meat in the Hida beef meal was unexpectedly fatty, leaving a good deal of waste which could not be eaten. This had been recorded by another visitor's review, so it is clearly a recurring issue. We had had the same meal twice in Takayama a few days earlier in simple restaurants where the meat had almost no wastage. This was the only disppointment about the ryokan. Having hida beef again was a pleasure. Otherwise everything else, including the wonderful food, was perfect. Thank you to the lady who welcomed us and attended to us during oour stay. Very best wishes to you.
- Ida (8/5): Relaxing and traditionally Japanese bliss - It was very calm and cosy stay, in a rural Japanese alps village. We were greeted with a warm welcome and a green tea, and the onsen were so relaxing and a bonus you could have them all to yourself privately per room. Our room was cosy and wonderfully traditional. And they were so accommodating with our little 8 month old. You have to book the meals in advance for specific time slots which makes it tricky if you want to be less strict with timings.
- Ronit (8/5): Very good - Snow above the open onsen was amazing
- Elinor (10/5): Exceptional - Great onsen and tasty meals
- Toan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Theoretical (10/5): Awesome ryokan in Okuhida Onsen area - Small but awesome ryokan with awesome staff! Main staff was able to speak very good English, and was very accommodating with requests, as much as possible. Really recommended to stay! Nothing!
- Jesse (9/5): Delightful place to stay in the alps! - Great vibe, friendly staff, amazing food. The room had a very traditional Japanese style and was quite comfy. The meals were great (both in taste and portions). Also quite close to the ropeway. It was a littly chilly in the area where we ate food but it wasn't too bad.
- Guy (10/5): Exceptional - The room was very accommodating, the onesns were amazing, we didn't have many other guests so we entered whenever we wanted
- Laura (10/5): Exceptional -
- Declan (8/5): Great relaxing stay in the Japanese Alps. - Friendly staff and relaxing comfortable room. Onsen was fantastic.
- Mathieu (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice welcoming
- Chrstine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Summit.wolf (6/5): Nice staff, that's all - Staff is very nice and attentive. Futons are nice and comfy. It's far away from the major activities, yes you can take the bus but there's very little to do around other than walking to the bridge. There's no possibility of dinning somewhere else near so you have no choice but to dine at the hotel, by the way the fold was not great, the Huda beef had lots of very chewy hard nerves. Breakfast wasn't better I was served an egg that looked like they forgot it was in the pan.
The ryokan looks outdated with taxidermied animals in very poor shape, all ruffled.
They only give you 45 minutes to use the onsen.
I booked this ryokan for lack of availability in others but I wouldn't recommend this place.
- Mleexl (10/5): Exceptional - We had a peaceful and comfortable stay at Hakuunso. The traditional rooms were well-maintained, and the lady hostess was very sweet and accommodating. The outdoor onsens were also very beautiful. Would recommend! Nothing!
- Reza (9/5): Superb - I like everything about the place 🙂 Nothing
- Gry (8/5): Calm little place with great private onsen - Great private onsen, very friendly staff, good atmosphere. Easy to get there with bus from Takayama. The location was next to a road with nothing really around.
- Yair (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ruben (9/5): Superb -
- Miguel (10/5): Amazing views with excellent service - Everything
- James (10/5): If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, eat good food and relax in a hot spring, this IS the plac - Beautiful place with amazing hot springs (for private use). Perfect for a relaxing stay, rooms were very comfortable and service was excellent! Tao (hope I’m spelling that right) was very sweet and attentive. We also had dinner and breakfast and food was delicious and very reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend this place! 👍 Does not apply. Everything was as it should have been.
- Kate (9/5): Highly recommended! - Delightful staff, delicious dinner of Hida beef & happy to have the option of western breakfast. Private onsen was a great experience. Location is a short drive to the Shin Hokada Ropeway.
- Belinda (10/5): Would highly recommend this place - The place was beautiful, clean, comfortable, good food and the staff were very friendly. The outdoor private Onsens were just amazing
- Rohan (10/5): Just about the most relaxing three days of my life. - This place is absolutely enchanting. If you're looking for an authentic mountain onsen ryokan experience, this is it in every detail.
- Florian (9/5): Superb -
- Barbara (9/5): Superb - A little oasis in this beautiful valley.
We enjoyed our short stay of one night.
The onsen facilities are private and very pretty.Perfect to rest our bodies.
We enjoyed spotting wildlife on a walk close by.
The dinner was one of the best ones we had during our stay in Japan, delicious.
The host was very kind and let us store our bags upon early arrival. There was nothing that we didn't like about our stay.
- Mike (6/5): Expensive for a basic ryokan. - We were very well looked after by our host. The food was reasonable and plentiful and served in a traditional ryokan dining area. There was no issue when we asked to switch from meat to fish for the second day’s meal. This wasn’t a bad hotel but it was overpriced. It was an inn on the mountain road surrounded by fairly dilapidated buildings. The images at Booking.com do suggest more of a garden and a view than the reality. There was no outdoor space. garden or shared onsen, just two small individual outdoor onsen and two indoor. You can’t sit in the onsen and see the mountains! It was a mile or so from the village so difficult to walk anywhere.
This has all the component parts of an ryokan experience, but having stayed at four other venues during our stay in Japan this felt a bit lacklustre. The property and the onsen need some attention. I appreciate this is an old property but ripped wallpaper, thin towels etc. are about maintenance and not age.
- Aline (7/5): Enjoyed my stay with husband. We enjoyed the peace and quiet of the place. Looking forward to our next visit - I like the private outdoor and indoor onsen in the property. Facilities are clean. The lady staff is really nice and polite. As a traditional Japanese inn this facility has it. However the facility upgrade would make it perfect.
- Daniel (1/5): Shop around - The room was a good size We have been to japan more than twenty times and have travelled extensively in the country. The positive reviews convinced us to stay at the property. However the reality did not match the images and description of the property. Facilities in the room were substandard for a ryokan of this price (104,000 yen for 2 nights).Tne outdoor onsen had a large bag of rubbish on the floor,, in the only functional inside bath there was only cold water at the washing station and we were told vy the Vietnamese hostess we had to wait 5 minutes for the hot water to arrive. The evening meal was woefully substandard, the previous night we had stayed at a mucher cheaper ryokan, half the price of this property, and were served a full kaiseki meal with more than 12 courses. At this property we were served one course consisting of a plate of uncooked meat and vegetables. I would not recommend this property to anyone and it is seriously overpriced.
- Wallace (7/5): Good -
- Sheue (6/5): Pleasant -
- Maas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ariyanee (9/5): Superb - Nice and polite staff. They are very helpful. Nice compact hotel with private onsens, two outdoor and two indoor. But the outdoor one you can see a house so we go for indoor one. 6-7 parking lots are available in front of the hotel. Good for the ones who drive.
One more thing, staff is very active in chat and response us so fast. A bit expensive but it is usual price of ryokan.
- Kimberly (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kitsakorn (8/5): Very good -
- Hui (9/5): Superb - staff are very polite and helpful. Food are really good. Onsen not perfect. Too many insect at all.
- Marianne (6/5): Pleasant - Private onsen and extremely kind owners. Breakfast and dinner were not very good and very overpriced. It’s far from everything.
- Anonymous (3/5): Poor - room size
- Daphne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christian (10/5): Very beautiful and peaceful place to try authentic Japanese onsen. You’ll have private onsen which is good for people wi - Authentic Japanese ryokan that offers private onsen for people with tattoo. Clean and very peaceful. Minor repairs or upgrades can be done on the ensuite but still very functional
- Tom (8/5): Lovely - Lovely authentic experience! Hot springs were lovely and staff very helpful! Saw a few Japanese hornets outside! To be expected though.
- Lucas (10/5): 10/10 would stay here again. - The onsen was amazing with a few options if you wanted something outside or indoors. The hostess was extremely helpful and friendly, and cooked great meals. The decor is fantastic and was everything I had hoped for when coming to Japan. It’s not a complaint, but it is a bit remote. So if you plan to do things in a city nearby, keep an eye on the bus schedule
- Devon (7/5): Ok stay while visiting Takayama - The host was excellent, very kind. The onsens were also a nice touch & unique. It’s a pretty area but far from Takayama, you definitely need a car. The dinner wasn’t good value for money, the rooms needed a little more TLC & the beds were very hard, even for futons.
- Maxim (1/5): Extremely disappointed, never again - Private Onsen were beautiful, free green tea I think this hotel should be two or three times cheaper.
It’s old building, but it’s very dirty - a lot of spiderwebs inside the room, dirty spots on walls, old smelly toilet (it smelled like it was a dirty public toilet). Toilet didn’t work properly, so it was constantly getting more water and making annoying sounds. As a solution I was given a screwdriver to stop water from running through tubes, and I had to screw it every time when I used the toilet.
Room was ok, view was on the parking lot plus mountains. I understand that the building is old, but cleaning should be done way more often and accurate.
We booked room with dinner and breakfast - we very constantly hungry after the dinner. It was very simple with lack of choice, and the taste was nothing special. Breakfast was simple as well.
Onsens were beautiful, but could use some extra cleaning.
We stayed in another similar hotels in mountains, and we had completely different experience for even less money.
Again, I understand that it’s an old building owned by small team, but it was very dirty and food was bad.
To summarize, I feel like I got rubbed - I would be fine if I paid 2-3 times less. I made a mistake of choosing this hotel for two nights, because my initial thought was that I want to run away from this place.
- Sahar (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lenart (10/5): Exceptional -
- Stephanie (9/5): Onsen after visiting the mountains - Very nice ryokan with 4 private onsen (2 outside) and one shared onsen. Big beautiful rooms and private dining areas. Everything you might need for bathing is provided. Lovely, helpful hostess who speaks great English. She was waiting for me at the bus stop , which is next to the house. She was flexible with me changing times for breakfast and very helpful in general. Tastefull food that you can choose from a menu. 12 minute bus ride (every hour) to the Nishihotake Ropeway Station that gets you up the mountains, from where great views if the weather permits. From there it’s also possible to do a shorter or longer hike, I did the 2km, but rather steep climb to the Nishiho Hut. I walked back, but it’s also possible to hike 4km to Kamikochi and take a bus back. Recommend!
- Martina (8/5): Highly recommended!!! - The hotel is located 30 min from Kamikochi bus stop, near a thermal water source.
The hotel has 3 different onsen baths that you can reserve and are private, beautiful. We tried also the dinner and it was a well served Japanese style dinner with fish and vegetables. The owner is very kind and in case she is speaking English!
- Wibekb (9/5): Superb - The private hot spring allows my tattooed husband to enjoy with me and my son at anytime we want.
The staff prepared HALAL HIDA BEEF and HALAL BREAKFAST as we requested prior to our arrival.
They also helped me to pay the luggage delivery from osaka as i didnt pay in previous hotel. I pay it upon arrival.
- Anonymous (10/5): My favorite accommodation in Japan! - this was my favorite stay in Japan! such a gorgeous location, which is conveniently located right beside the bus stop, and surrounded by gorgeous mountains. the host was such a lovely person and helped to rearrange my dates as a typhoon meant I couldn’t get to Hakuunsou on time! also the host made me delicious meals every day and was so helpful. my room was very clean and really beautiful with gorgeous views of the mountains. the onsens in the property are fantastic too! I can’t recommend enough.
- Florian (9/5): A really good place, worth the price - Calm, clean, onsen available to tatooed person, host very kind and helpfull A bit far from kamikochi
- Mariana (10/5): 100% recommended it if you want to have a full Japanese experience - I love the kindness of the staff ! they treated me like a princess! ans the private hot spring! wooow maybe that for breakfast they didn’t have a lot of options but that’s because I am from Mexico and we have lots of breakfast options
- Lukas (10/5): Great location, lovely host, and amazing onsen! Highly recommend. - Great location, lovely host, and amazing onsen!
Highly recommend.
