- Anna (10/5): An experience you need to have :) - Mizumari is truly an exceptional experience, and I cannot recommend it enough.
This intimate ryokan has just three rooms, each with its own private onsen facing a mountain river — a view that feels like pure magic. The rooms themselves are spacious, beautifully designed, and stocked with everything you could imagine: alcohol, snacks, ice, ice cream, cosmetic sets, and skincare products. Beyond that, there’s also a complimentary snack bar in the hall and even a free vending machine.
The staff at Mizumari are some of the kindest and warmest people you’ll ever meet. They created a one-of-a-kind experience for us, from the stunning multi-course dinner and breakfast to their thoughtful guidance through every dish. (Tip: let them know if you’re not very hungry — the dinner was a 12-course feast, and we were absolutely full to the brim!) Not everyone speaks English, but that was never an issue. With a translator, their warmth and hospitality came across effortlessly.
The private onsen alone deserves its own mention — the most relaxing, restorative way to melt away stress and recharge.
The location is also perfect. The ryokan is easy to reach with a train and quick bus ride (they also provide transfers), and it’s just steps away from the famous Seven Waterfalls hiking trails, plus a charming frog zoo and wasabi shops. The team even drove us to the top of the hiking trail so we could enjoy a downhill walk without the climb.
For us, Mizumari was a 1,000,000/10 experience — unforgettable in every way.
- Cathreen (10/5): Worth the Splurge! - The location of the ryokan is nested the forest next to the Kawazu falls with the sound of the running river in the background, felt like we were part of this nature. We had the larger room with 2 washrooms, 2 outdoor onsen tubs, and one foot bath. Beverages and snacks were included, meals were fantastic. In their survey I gave them 11 out of 10 score. The most incredible experience and I will definitely recommend and return. All the meals were fantastic maybe a little less volume as we don't like to waste food, many times we had to forgo dessert. With that being said the last breakfast was western style which was less impressive when compared to the rest of the meals.
- Marie Michelle (10/5): - Jeg have én overnatning og det var fuldstændig fantastisk!
- Nicole (10/5): First class experience of ryokan with beautiful private onsens and wonderful staff - A beautiful experience from beginning to end. Staff and facilities are absolutely first class. We stayed in room 5 and thoroughly enjoyed the foot bath as well as the separate private onsens. The sounds of the waterfalls and river next to our verandas was relaxing.
Rooms are spacious and In room facilities are exceptional with a special mention for the Refa hairdryer.
The proximity to Kawazu seven waterfalls was amazing only a short walk or drive to the start of the trail.
We highly recommend splurging on this experience. There was so much food, especially at breakfast that we couldn’t finish eating it all.
Some insects outside but mosquito coils were provided and we didn’t get bitten
- razan (10/5): - The location was beautiful, the staff were pleasent and incredibly helpful, and the food was amazing There wasn't anything that I didn't like. Everything was very well thought out
- Rafael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Edward (10/5): outrageous omotenashi - Some guy bought an old Ryokan and is fixing it up a bit at a time. So most of the place is closed but that doesn't matter because the stuff that's open is really nice. The staff are IMPOSSIBLY gracious and helpful and kind. The food is incredible without being TOO MUCH like many ryokan. They also have converted a HUGE tatami room into a kids area, with pingpong, tents, tricycles, a TRAMPOLINE. it's CRAZY awesome. also the seven waterfalls area around it is very cool. also unlimited free beer!
- Elizabeth (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sharon (10/5): Exceptional - Our stay at Muzumari was the highlight of our trip to Japan
The rooms were amazing together with the private onsen.
The staff were very friendly and wonderful, explaining all the different Japanese dishes prepared for us.
The food was exceptional.
Our stay here was very special for our first visit to Japan

- The (10/5): Highly recommended place!!! - Everything. We have had an amazing time. Thank you so much Taiyo for your wonderful hospitality. We will come back. Nothing.
- Gayle (10/5): Our stay at Mizumari was the highlight of our trip. The property and the food were incredible, but it was the service th - Everything about Mizumari is magical. The property is very serene and private. We sat in the onsen and watched deer walk up the hi on the other side of the river, and watched birds take nectar from the flowering trees hanging over the river. The rooms are traditionally furnished and very spacious and comfortable.
- Angie (10/5): Hidden gem with private onsen and exceptional services & meals - Super friendly & helpful host, patiently explained each dish for us at dinner time, and spent time chatting with us & recommended attractions. Exceptional meals, fresh seasonal ingredients prepared delicately with love. Very spacious room with private foot bath (overlooking the forest and a stream), and onsen bath. Great amenities. Generous selection of snacks and ice cream on the house.
- Stanicki (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely the best place ever. And I have been to hundreds of great hotels. Make sure you do the wasabi trip to the local farmer which Tayo organizes.
- Goh (8/5): Excellent place for therapeutic holiday - Close to waterfalls, nice onsen, big rooms, free flow of drinks and snacks, excellent service, dine in the rooms Price
- Avery (10/5): 10/10 would recommend for anyone who is looking for an intimate, serene vacation time in the nature. - Everything was excellent, the service was personal, attentive and top-notch. We felt like we were really taken care of. The property itself was serene, beautiful and was the perfect escape to treat ourselves to a reset from busy everyday life. The creek next to the property was amazing to have the sound and the view to enjoy. We had kids with us and they were so accommodating to our families. Overall a very wonderful experience. I wish we could've stayed longer.
- Olymar (10/5): Exceptional -
- Julie (10/5): Great service, fantastic food & drinks, Onsen is quite an experience. - The service is impeccable, Taiyo-san is thoughtful & provides great service. The dinner & breakfast is outstanding. All drinks are free! The Onsen in the room is great. Love it. Highly recommend. Nothing
- Falch (10/5): Exceptional -
- Axel (10/5): Tranquil and attentive stay - The property itself, the rooms, the perfect temperature dog the baths, but most of all the service from the owner and staff were beyond compare.
The meals were so well prepared and diligently explained by Taiyo-san in English. It sounded like most of the guests are from Tokyo or elsewhere in Japan, but foreign guests should not hesitate to book as the English communication was perfect.
Little touches were appreciated like Hanabi by the front door with lanterns and matches, and a free vending machine with drinks and snacks.
At the end of our stay, the owner even offered to drive us to the top of the waterfall hike, he went above and beyond by returning our camera to us when we forgot it in the room.
We highly recommend room 105 as it has two beautiful decks with multiple baths/footbath. It was nice to have two restrooms and such a spacious place to relax.
Every amenity in the restroom and minibar was perfect with lots of complimentary drinks and ice cream.
The vibe and aesthetic were perfect throughout the room and overall property.
Ideal location 30 minutes or less from the beach/Shimoda and near Kawazoo frog exhibits, close to Shuzenji, and walking distance from the Kawazu waterfalls.
We can’t wait to return one day and have recommended to family members! Nothing, the property was perfect. Maybe we were a little too full from how generous the portions were, but that’s not a bad thing!
- Meaghan (10/5): - We absolutely loved Mizumari. Taiyo and his staff went above and beyond for us, and all of Mizumari was beautiful. It was our favorite stay in Japan!
- Derek (10/5): Exceptional - We were greatly impressed by the entire experience. The food was exceptional. the facilities were comfortable and absolutely amazing. The in-room onsen was such a magnificent touch. And the staff members were incredibly helpful, welcoming, and friendly. There were no specific aspects that we didn't like. It was a wonderful experience in every aspect.
- Ali (10/5): An incredible luxury experience all around. - What an experience! We stayed at Mizumari during our honeymooon and I can honestly say we have never felt more welcomed, relaxed, and cared for than we did at Mizumari.
Taiyo and his staff are truly incredible and work to meet your every need. For example, when we arrived, we mentioned a specific drink that we had enjoyed on our trip. The next day, Taiyo had sent someone to find the item and served it to us in several different forms. Everyone was so attentive and kind, and we were incredibly sad to leave!
The food is incredible and plentiful- the best we had in Japan. We really loved the fresh and creative nature of the food, with a nice mix of seafood and meat dishes including locally sourced foods. The courses keep on coming so be sure to save space! We also appreciated that the staff was very helpful in recommending drinks pairings that go with the meal (and which are included in the booking price).
The space was recently rennovated and has a very clean and modern look. We stayed in room 1, which has a large living room, separate bedroom and a patio overlooking the creek with a gorgeous and large onsen tub fed by the hotsprings. The entire space feels very private and quiet. The location is also great, a few steps away from the start of the seven waterfalls hike (which we loved- we had it all to ourselves when we went around 10am), and only a 20minute drive from the coast, where there is limitless hiking and exploring.
- Johanna (10/5): Perfect secluded Ryokan with private onsen - This is the perfect Ryokan experience! The secluded location (the drive is so worth your while!!!) makes for the perfect tranquil getaway, the private outdoor onsen overlooking a babbling brook and a forest where deer and squirrels come to visit, is just the best thing to enjoy after a busy day exploring the beautiful Izu peninsula. The room/suite was bigger than we’ve ever had in Japan. The staff are just so lovely and accommodating- special credit to Taiyo whose Emglish is excellent! The food was out of this world, with locally sourced (even the rice!) ingredients… we could not have had a better experience!
- William (10/5): Aboslutely great, we'd definitely come back and stay longer. - Location and Hotel itself was amazing, right on a river. Our room had the sound of river water which was very calming. Not much to say here, we loved everything. My wife was a bit challenged on the traditional breakfast, as we are not used to eating raw fish in the morning, however it was fresh and delicious.
- Malinee (10/5): Very impressive stay especially with the excellent services at Mizumari - Small and private ryokan, a real peaceful stay. The dressing should have been next to the outdoor onsen in the room.
- Adam (10/5): Exceptional - The service was impeccable and we felt the immense care the staff put into ensuring our stay was comfortable.
- Talal (10/5): Rejuvenating - This hidden gem offers an unforgettable onsen experience that is beautifully exposed to the natural surroundings. Soaking in the soothing hot springs while surrounded by the serene beauty of the outdoors is truly a remarkable experience. The combination of a generous, delectable meal, the kindness of Taiyo-San, and the rejuvenating onsen experience makes this place a five-star retreat for those seeking an all-encompassing and unforgettable taste of Japanese hospitality and nature's embrace. I wished the music in the corridor was traditional Japanese to create a truly authentic atmosphere through all the corners of resort
- Jamey (10/5): Mizumari is a beautiful place to stay with delicious food and an incredibly friendly staff! - Where to begin? There was so much to love about Mizumari. The location right near the seven Kawazu falls is beautiful. A short hike brings you past each waterfall. The food is extravagant- dinner was seven courses I believe and breakfast was four or five courses- possibly more but we were full and happy. The rooms have private onsens overlooking a picturesque creek. All of this should give any traveler enough reasons to stay there but what delighted us most was the incredible service. They took such excellent care of us and were so friendly. I enjoyed speaking with the staff as they patiently explained every feature of the hotel and every delicious dish they served. Everything is included with your stay- want a beer? go for it. Want more to eat? It's on the way. I can't say enough nice things about this place. Nothing disappointed us. We had a wonderful stay.
