Guest Reviews

- Carlandrea (7/5): Rustic ryokan. - The owner is really nice and helpful. The location is super, right in "historic road" and not too far away from the lifts.
The traditional style breakfast was also really nice.
We also really like the Onsen tour, where you have a bath at partner's facilities. For the daily fare, we expected facilities a bit more up to date.

- Heidi (9/5): A charming and traditional place to stay and enjoy the lovely village of Zao Onsen! - Yoshidaya is a charming, traditional and peaceful family run ryokan full of character and the most happiest and friendliest staff! The Japanese breakfast was nutritious and delicious! Whilst there may be fancier places to stay, Yoshidaya is a great way to enjoy the lovely village of Zao Onsen in a quaint 350 year old ryokan full of history and authenticity. Yoshidaya's onsen had such healing water and was great for early morning and late night dips and it was an extra bonus to enjoy 6 other hotels onsens too that are partnered with Yoshidaya. I was sad as we left it too late to make a reservation and couldn't get in to dinner as they were fully booked so make sure you book in early and don't miss out too!

- Lee (9/5): A great location with friendly and welcoming staff - Great location with welcoming staff and a friendly atmosphere The property is aged and in need of repairs
- Damian (9/5): What a treasure - Yoshidaya was very authentic. Japanese rooms and bedding. Onsen on-site,min other hotels and public ones nearby a true blessing. Fantastic Japanese breakfasts. Really helpful owner and staff who were very good with us non-Japanese speakers. Really really enjoyed this stay Be prepared for the stairs as they are steep and a lot of them.
Generally the place could do with some updating and re-freshing but that did add to the charm.
Once again Google Maps and the Booking.com sites had us walking up and down the street trying to locate.

- David (9/5): Great location with helpful and friendly staff. - Great location and it is link to 6 other hotels so you can try out their onsen facilities free of charge. The owner was incredibly helpful and friendly. Better pillows but that’s a personal preference.
- Rodney (8/5): -

- Katalyna (9/5): Beautiful place in a gorgeous town with lots of great features. - Food was amazing and staff was very kind. The room was clean and bigger than I expected. Since it was July, it was a little hot in the room. The bed and pillow were quite hard.
- Hiromi (8/5): -

- Michelle (10/5): Warm, convenient, and reasonable - Super charming small ryokan in great location from the bus terminal (5 min walk) as well as all the onsens. The staff were so kind and amazing. Chigusa at the front desk is easy to communicate as her English is very good and she was so helpful in guiding me through the map of all the onsens. The cleaning staff also so warm. Also the onsen is 24-hrs so that was great for me because I arrived around 8pm. Loved the breakfast and I was shocked when a whole rice cooker was placed on the table just for me. It was a great first time experience to Zao Onsen area and I hope I can find a way to come back again. Not applicable

- Dirk (9/5): Traditionelles Onsen-Ryokan in guter Lage.
- Lindsay (9/5): Beautiful, clean room and great location. - The breakfast was a delicious traditional Japanese style meal. The portions provided were very filling!
The room was beautiful and more spacious than expected. We had an amazing view. The location is perfect right in town and near onsens.
Staff were all absolutely amazing! The only problem we encountered during our whole stay was that the wifi didn't quite travel to our room at the very end of the top floor. It was not reliable and could only be connected to sometimes.
Also the second night of our stay we were unable to get hit water in the public shower even after waiting.
- Ho (8/5): Very good -
- Jun (8/5): Very good -
(2/5): Won't be back - Location. Staff were courteous and friendly. Unfortunately that doesn't make up for decades of use with zero renovations. Old, uncomfortable, drafty, unclean, stinky. A property like this in Australia would go bust within 1 season. Watch out for "5 *" reviews from certain countries, I suppose perhaps the lower standards there make this accommodation acceptable.
- Brad (8/5): We had a great stay at Yoshidaya. Thanks so much to Chigusa for all of her help, she really went out of her way to help -
- Chih (9/5): Superb - Good staff and environment
- Tim (7/5): Good -
- Chawanrut (10/5): Good english communication - Good location, professional service and staff can use english very well None
- John (9/5): Superb - Well maintained and run traditional Japanese Ryokan. Tatami room with attached bathroom. Onsen in the hotel. Breakfast was great (traditional Japanese), and dinner was great. Location very convenient for ski lifts and for dinner and drinks in the evening. 10 minutes walk to Lawson (as if that matters)
15 minutes walk to the #1 Gondola
- Alexandre (4/5): Disappointing -
- John (8/5): Great traditional accommodation in mountain ski resort. - Great location in village near to all facilities and walkable from bus station. Nice Onsen. Lady host was very helpful and even booked our onward bus for us. Nothing really. Traditional beds and outside room toilets can be a little hard but that’s what you expect.
- Michael (1/5): Excruciating painful/uncomforatble given the cost of accommodation. - In center of old town. Uncared for, old and broken down, breakfast horrible, coffee hazelnut (why?), noisy, run down
(9/5): Good :) - Lovely cosy ryokan
- Isabella (9/5): Superb -
- Nicolas (8/5): Perfect location and affordable traditional accommodation with fluent speaking host! - Ideal location in Zao Onsen, just a few minutes walk to the slopes with the fastest access to the best slopes from my point of view. A few good restaurants around, varying from Sushi, traditional, gourmet, pizza, lamb barbecue, ...
The traditional breakfast was so healthy!
Our host' level of English was excellent which is an enormous plus in getting guidance how to get around.
Very functional Onsen to enjoy after a long day of skiing. Maybe consider offering dinner in the future?
- Mei (6/5): Pleasant - Staff are friendly and helpful The ryokan is very old and the room is so cold. No washing basin in the room.
- Yuxiang (9/5): Great stay. Recommended! - - I’ve stayed in many Japanese hotels (ryokans) and the service was all good. But this one is exceptional. The staff were very helpful, welcoming and efficient. They also spoke English well.
- Great dinner options with very reasonable price.
- Good location. With a small onsen. - Building is really old. You can hear other people sometimes.
- Ma (9/5): Superb -
