Guest Reviews
- Maren (1/5): This cottage is to be avoided - there is nothing which pleased me. Accommodation 06.03. - 07.03.2026
Overnight for 2 people, 1 night
5 km north on R 44 of Somerset West direction Stellenbosch. The entrance is about Klein Helderberg road and then passing along the live fence parallel to R 44 direction south.
This accommodation is to be avoided.
Especially the road R 44 is a 4-lane road directing north- south is located in a distance of about 100 m nearby separated by a hedge. The zoom of passing cars and trucks is very annoying.
There is so much promised in the advertisement but it is not kept.
In the cottage there is an undefined smell. It is told about rats in the thatched roof; in another recommendation. I got a severe headache so that I laid down next day .
The interior facilities are not complete. The stove / oven in the main room is not functioning. There is also no table for sitting and having a meal. There is only one chair with rolls as part of a secretary but not useable for eating. The secretary is not proper for having a meal.
In the bathroom you will find a plain floor without a shower tray, a small washbowl directly in a corner and a toilet. The flush of the toilet is not working properly because the water has no sufficient pressure for filling the reservoir.
The door in the bathroom leading outside seems unreliable. It is completely run down.
Outside on the wooden deck you can find two chairs and a round slice of a tree. Out of my view this is not appropriate for having a meal as well.
In addition you can find a chair and a table situated beside for decoration.
Around the cottage there is no security. The surrounding is conciliating a very unsafe feeling.
About the host it is to remark he is not reliable. He does not keep his given word.

- Kevin (2/5): Avoid this accommodation - The facility was run down, there was a door directly from the bathroom to the outside that was broken and couldn’t be locked, no security. And, rats in the ceiling all night.
- Cecile (4/5): Budget accommodation - Value for money if you just need a stay for the night. The bed was comfy. The place could use a real clean. Little effort is put into cleaning.
- Divan (6/5): Nice cottage - It's really nice cottage with huge potential. Neither the stack door, nor the bathroom's bottom door could close properly. It needs maintenance. The wet-room bathroom is a nice idea, but not quite practical given the size and type of floor.
- Erasmus (5/5): - King size bed To close to national rd

- Kyle (10/5): Lovely stay! Will definitely book here again! - It was quaint. Loved the little fireplace and the bed was very comfy. Perfect location for shooting out and about without staying in the city center. A hairdryer would be nice and maybe a liquid hand soap.
- Muzenda (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (9/5): Very much enjoyed our stay at Tollbosch. - Spacious, rustic cottage style accommodation, in a great location (close to Stellenbosch and Somerset West), value for money. Friendly and helpful hosts. Could use an airfryer.
- Hannalie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Charmane (5/5): The comfy bed was this place's only saving grace! - The bed was super comfy with sufficient pillows There was no bedside lamp on the one bedside table. We felt like we got all the leftovers - no shower gel, just a bit of hand soap left in a bottle and an old shampoo bottle, which may or may not have been left by the last guest, and the last dregs of a tiny jar of coffee. There was no milk or bottled water - we had to ask for milk after 9 pm and eventually bought some. We went out and came back after dark - there is no outside light by the parking area, which is next to the wire fence - security was an issue for us. There is no signage to the cottage, and I arrived after my husband so I found this frustrating. No TV, and no fan, which wasn't an issue for us, but at R1000 a night, one would expect. Getting the basics right are important.
- Daniella (10/5): Exceptional -
- Deon (10/5): Good value for money and will for sure stay there again - The location and the comfort. The host was also very good. Very comfortable bed. Loved the fireplace. I liked everything.
- Rose-marie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sandra (8/5): Very good -
- Franie (10/5): Jewel little spot for a gateway among wineries - The place is really special and has tons of character. It's a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a bit of quietness, whilst still being so close to all main roads leading to wineries.
Good shower pressure / wet room was great and water didn't flow everywhere, comfy beds, useful air con and darkening curtains. Not the place for cooking but if you get some simple dinner it's just perfect.
Pictures don't give the place any justice - especially the front door picture - it is a really nice place.
Also it's just half hour drive from the airport. We had no real issues but to look for improvements, perhaps the fridge is a bit small and not powerful in cooling even on max setting.
Maybe and electric stove could be added but everything else was nice clean and convenient.
It is close to the main road but at night you don't hear anything.
- Maxine (10/5): BEAUTIFUL PLACE ! I LOVE IT ❤️ -
- Jenna (8/5): Very good -
- Arthur (8/5): Very good -
- Megan (8/5): Very good -
- Allan (10/5): excellent spot, convenient and remote in one - the r44 is pretty noisy, but they can't do anything bout that
- Zwanga (6/5): It was okay - The view The furniture can do with some vacuuming, especially the couch. The toilet and shower situation is also a bit mmeh. We had coffee that looks a 100 years old and dirty spoon. The milk was open already and apparently that was milk from the house as there had no other milk. 😂
- Haricombe (7/5): Good -
- Venita (8/5): Very good - Nice location, central to everything. Not as quiet as expected, close to a busy road.
- Johannes (10/5): Had a wonderful stay - Clean and bed sleeps like home.
- Vince (10/5): Riaan was a great host. I will definitely stay here again. - Comfortable, Easy access to main roads.
- Olebogeng (8/5): Very good - The staff was very friendly and helpful. Riaan is a great cook and we were spoilt by his home cooked meals.
A very spacious unit and comfortable bed. The unit has no air conditioner. We travelled during a very hot season and was sometimes frustrating being there in that heat.
- Nohlene (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lennit (10/5): Exceptional - An idealic, quaint, Dutch farm style cottage at the foot of stunning Stellenbosch mountains.
Simplicity, comfortable, and the perfect home base for those wanting to explore the beauty and tasteful experience of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek wine route.
Stunning view of the Southern hemisphere night sky.
Only 10 minutes drive from the historic town of Stellenbosch or the long sandy beach of Strand.
Riaan (the host) is the opitamy of true South African hospitality.
The perfect host and home at just the right time in my journey.
- Paul (9/5): Superb -
- Celest (10/5): Romantic and cosy. - Very cozy and central. Perfect for a romantic stay. Private and fireplace was a big win. If there is loadshedding there is no water. We were warned in advance.
- Archer (8/5): Very good -
- Riaan (9/5): Outstanding experience - Fully furnished apartment, with great views and outside sitting area. Our host was eager to assist and provided plenty of wood for the fireplace. Comfy bed and large shower completes a relaxing weekend.
- Nieuwoudt (8/5): Great value with beautiful views and a very comfortable stay. - Beautiful views and located near great wineries. Bright, comfortable property with a lovely fireplace.
