Guest Reviews
- Dunn (10/5): - Traditional Ryokan in the village at the start of the Dewa Sanzan, lovely hosts in Nokia and Yuki and the breakfasts and dinners were delicious. They were very attentive and accommodating. No complaints.
- Maxime (9/5): -
- Sally (10/5): Just Perfect. - Think traditional and exceptional Japanese hospitality, beautifully appointed rooms, truly delicious food and within very close walking distance to the start of Mt Haguro Trail.
- Ana (10/5): - I loved staying in Tamonkan. The food was perfect and the traditional japanese style rooms were really beautiful and comfortable. The staff was helpful and very friendly. I would recommend it to anybody. Nothing
- Christine (10/5): Sehr empfehlenswert - Wunderbare Gastgeber, feines Essen (Halbpension empfohlen), schönes Haus, sehr sauber und mit Herz geführt.
- Nico (10/5): - The Food, the rooms and the small hot Bath
- MAKI (9/5): -
- Lukas (10/5): - Service, Location, Ambiente
- Pokman (10/5): - The host is very friendly and kind. They are providing as much assistance as they can

- Brandon (10/5): - Wonderful hospitality and exceptional vegetarian Shojin Ryori cuisine. Great base to explore Mt Haguro. Hotel staff accepted our baggage, despite it being too early to check in and directed us to a local museum where we could borrow rain boots and poles to hike Mt Haguro in extreme snowy conditions!
- Braden (10/5): -
- Đặng (10/5): - I really like old-style ryokans. They feel warm and cozy, and they have a way of healing my heart. I think I’m not used to sharing a toilet between women and men on the second floor, but there is a private toilet available on the first floor. I guess this is part of old Japanese culture.
- Funder (10/5): - Had a great stay. Very friendly people who went out of their way to help.
- Moshe (9/5): - Wonderful stay! The owners are incredibly friendly and ready to help. Their warm hospitality made the visit enjoyable
- Guillaume (9/5): Very nice stay near Mt Haguro, amazing homemade food - - very nice owners
- amazing food for breakfast and dinner
- onsen
- traditional house
- good location near Mt Haguro - the house was a bit cold, but not the bedroom or dining room
- Tapas Kumar (9/5): Awesome home stay with limited option in food. - Property is amazing, right next to bust stop and Pagoda is also at walkable distance. It felt like a home stay, host were welcoming and friendly. I visited at start of December so the place was empty, just one more couple was staying apart of us. Food was very good however vegetarian option was not that good. For the dinner 2200 Yen (PP)was charged extra but the food provided wasn’t worth it.
- Nicki (9/5): A home away from home in the spiritual setting of the Dewa Sanzan - The central location in Haguromachi made this the ideal location for an exploration of Mount Haguro and the rest of the Dewa Sanzan. The food was absolutely sublime, simple homemade Japanese food that warmed the soul, just as much as the owners that make you feel home from the moment you step inside. Absolutely wonderful stay!
- Ofek Moshe (10/5): -
- Jun (9/5): -
- Niamh (10/5): - This was such a highlight of my trip to Japan- I loved everything about it. The owners were so warm and friendly, the dinner and breakfast were amazing and my room was very comfortable. The location is also great for accessing Mount Haguro. I would love to come back someday!
- Gary (10/5): Beautiful accommodation in a scenic village. Exceptional meals. - Perfect location in a beautiful village. The room was very spacious and well appointed. Everything in the accommodation was spotless. The owners were exceptionally helpful and friendly. The meals were absolutely beautiful - it was some of the most delicious food I have eaten in Japan. I really appreciated the host taking time to explain every dish. Everything was perfect.
- katumi (8/5): -
- Cristina (10/5): Muy recomendable.
Nada.
- Deguchi (10/5): -
- Erwan (10/5): -
- Cyril (10/5): -
- Marta (10/5): Esperienza fantastica - Al Tamonkan ci siamo sentiti a casa.
- JON (8/5): Americans may need to adapt to staying in a traditional ryokan but it is well worth staying here. - Location is perfect for Hagurosan. Trailhead is just a 10 minute walk away. Keiseki meals were awesome. Staff were all friendly and helpful. We were provided with a space heater for our room as it was a little chilly during our stay. It takes some getting used to sharing washing facilities and toilets but it was fine. We had our own sink with hot water so that was nice.
- Aya (10/5): Fantastic stay and delicious food -- would come again! - Wonderful staff, absolutely delicious and beautifully arranged food, comfortable, spacious, and clean room, and really nice onsen. I would absolutely come back and wish I'd been able to stay longer! Very close to the beginning of the Mt Haguro climb, as well.
- Nuria (10/5): -
- Yael (10/5): - The hosts were really nice and spoke English.
The food was great.
The location and parking were very convenient.
Rien
- RODRIGO (10/5): Wonderful stay! - Had a wonderful time here! This is a very nice ryokan, just a short walk from the Zuishinmon Gate. The room was spotless, spacious, and comfortable. Dinner was absolutely amazing: beautifully prepared and delicious! The hosts were very kind and accommodating; I had an early morning departure, and they thoughtfully prepared a breakfast box for me to take on the go. Highly recommended! Nothing, everything was great
- Jacob (10/5): Amazing and comfortable! - Delicious meal with vegetarian (shojin ryori) and non-vegetarian options. Very friendly staff who spoke very good english. Nothing!
- Mathias (10/5): - This Ryokan is located right next to the incredibly beautiful Mt. Haguro.
The Hosts were very welcoming and we had a lot of fun with them. The service was great. They also speak good english.
Nothing more to add. Would totally recommend.

- Chee Kian (10/5): - Super Host & Super Chef!
Warm, welcoming, and deeply attentive — the hosts are truly exceptional. Their dedication and knowledge shine through every detail, especially in the meals and the overall stay. Whether you request a pure Buddhist vegetarian meal or have specific needs, they go the extra mile with care and heart.
Communication is smooth in both English and Japanese, which makes everything easy and reassuring. A small team, yet incredibly skillful. I’m truly amazed by their hospitality. This is not just a stay — it’s a rare, heartfelt experience that cannot be exchanged for anything.
I feel truly blessed. Thank you so much.
Very highly recommended.
May all your kindness and efforts be returned with abundant merits and blessings.
Namu Amida Butsu 🙏🏻😊🌿
Nichts
- Chee Kian (10/5): -
- Otto (10/5): -
- Alexander (10/5): - Lovely and accomodating hosts, including for us as non Japanese speakers. The meals provided were also exceptional, including in use of local ingredients.
- Alexia (8/5): Authentic Ryokan Experience - The host is super welcoming and speaks good English, the house is charming and has all the necessary facilities (even a laundry machine 200¥). Food is freshly prepared in the kitchen and presented in the dining room. All a lovely experience. The mattresses are really thin (to European standards). And of course the walls are thin, so it’s best to get in the early shift since you’ll be awake early…
- Cathy (10/5): Exceptional - We enjoyed our stay herbathrooms room is spacious and comfortable. Theough without air conditioner, We slept well in one of the hot Summer day. The shared bathroom and toilets are pretty convenient and not crowded. The dinner and the breakfast we're excellent. We enjoyed the traditional atmosphere. The host and hostess are very kind and helpful. Nothing
- Bogna (10/5): Very relaxing place in quiet village, close to the main attractions. - The house was spotless clean and quiet. The meals were absolutely amazing, top notch! An orange ice cream after dinner was fantastic! Each meal was unique and presented by the owner.
Most of all we loved the warm and welcoming hospitality.
We had some trouble with the rental car and the owner of Tamonkan help us to deal with this. We are extremely thankful for that!
The location was also great. Nothing
- Lester (10/5): Charming, historic ryokan, amazing food. - It was a deeply satisfying stay at Tamonkan. The beautifully timbered ryokan is hundreds of years old and has been in the host Toki’s family for 11 generations. Generously sized rooms in traditional style, all spotlessly clean, the timber floors so polished you can almost see your reflection. Toki is a genial and charming host with readily offered information useful to our stay. His wife Uki is the chef. Much has been written about the quality of the meals already, but that doesn’t quite prepare you for the creativity and care poured into every one of her dishes. Even after many visits to ryokan cuisine over the years, Uki’s dishes stand as some of the best of them all. She modestly explains each dish for you, and the offerings were different each night. No overstatement to say she is a master of her craft. Overall a wonderfully warm, welcoming and delicious stay at Tamonkan. Everything was fine.
- Matt (10/5): If I return to Mt Haguro, I will definitely return to Tamonkan - The meals were excellent! I got both dinner and breakfast. Authentic and heaps of variety in each meal. Also, delicious! I chose this ryokan because of its proximity to Mt Haguro, which was a short bus ride away, though I walked (about 700m to the start of the path). The owners (husband/wife team) greeted me warmly and introduced me to my room. They both speak decent English and were very patient when I attempted to speak Japanese. The building was owned by the husband's grandfather and there were several artefacts in my room from the past that reflected its history. At the end I received a postcard souvenir with a picture of the ryokan on it. Your mileage may vary on the futon beds. I have a bad lower back and because they are quite flat I had a rough sleep. Had I spoken up I think this would have been accommodated for with some extra padding but I was too shy to do so as the owners were also in bed. Also, though this is typical for lots of older Japanese buildings, if you are reasonably tall you need to watch your head on the doorways.
- Magdalena (10/5): Exceptional -
- Radmila (9/5): Superb -
- Annette (9/5): Located just a short walk away from the entrance at the bottom of Mt Haguro. Soak in a hot bath after your walk and eat - They accommodated our vegan style of eating. Renovations were very noisy and dusty.
- Joshua (10/5): Exceptional - Very friendly staff with surprisingly good English. The room was spacious and clean, and the food was delicious. Good location close to Mount Haguro which was well worth the trip. One of the toilet stalls that we used was too narrow to sit fully, and my knees were hitting the corners.
- Charlene (9/5): Superb - Although it was advertised as a vegetarian breakfast it was a nice surprised to have saba. It and dinner were delicious. . We wanted to catch an early bus and had breakfast 10 min ahead of time so we could make the bus. They gave us a big room and had boots for me to use since there was melting know. They were very helpful. Thank you
- Wilson (8/5): A very authentically Japanese stay! - It was very charming, lots of character and history. Owner was very friendly. No central heating. It was so cold to get to the bathrooms and toilets.
- Hrishikesh (9/5): Ideal place to stay to visit Dewa Sanzan sites. - Very friendly staff, very caring and they really guide foreigners very well about the locality, commute etc. Also, one person in my group got sick and they really helped us with temporary medicines to relieve symptoms. The accommodation is traditional and the interiors are very pleasant. There is plenty to eat for both breakfast and dinner. The dishes are delicious Japanese food typical of the locality Shared toilets are tiny especially for foreigners it's a bit of a squeeze
- Michael (8/5): Great hosts, great food, very memorable stay. We all loved it. -
- Brice (10/5): Exceptional -
- Grant (9/5): Cozy Edo ryokan - A great traditional building Bath bath be a little small for some guests
- Jacob (8/5): Very good -
- Hrishikesh (8/5): Very good - Tamonkan has tastefully selected rooms. It's a pleasant place to stay with a nice hot tub to soak on a wintery day. Breakfast and dinner are very nice Japanese cuisine nutritious and mainly vegetarian. Bus stop to Tsuruoka is nearby and easy access to Haguro-san the five storied Pagoda. The staff are very kind and attentive. It's overall a good experience staying there and great value for money too.
- Sin (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice environment and nice owners with great service
- Terry (10/5): Authentic Ryokan experience - As you stepped into the Ryokan you could feel the history seeping from its walls, as it has been in Yuki's family for over 100 years. You get a sense of the fellow travellers who have passed through and experienced great hospitality like we did, from Toki_san and Yuki. They gave us great recommendations of the local area too. Dinner is a definite must when you stay here as you eat, delicious food from the mountains and local area.
- James (9/5): Highly recommended for an authentic Japanese inn stay - Really excellent food with explanations from the staff, very friendly and polite owners, perfect location at the foot of Mt Haguro, and authentic traditional ambiance of the Japanese-style rooms. Highly recommended. The room was a little small and there was not a good view.
