Guest Reviews
- Ravenna (10/5): Felt traditional - The host was so sweet:) A family run business and the room and bathroom felt so clean. She left nice notes and fruit for us! Nothing bad about the property
- Kristen (10/5): - The location was excellent! We were just off the road from a lively touristy street, but also had easy access to the bus system. The place was very clean. Just know that the owner will enter your room each day when you are away, but she sometimes left a treat for us, which was much appreciated.
- Drew (10/5): Great experience for an affordable price. - The experience of a traditional-style room was so much fun and genuinely comfortable. The host put in extra effort to make sure we felt welcome and enjoyed our stay. I slept very well in the beds. The bathrooms were clean and easily accessible. The inn was walking-distance from multiple shops, restaurants, and shrines to visit. For all of these advantages, the price was very affordable.
- Ai vee (10/5): Will come back again! - Love the Japanese traditional house. The futons was so comfortable. Everything is so clean. All amenities were suffice. Hosts were amazing.
- Alexandre (9/5): - Most comfortable bed/pillows in Japan. Stair treads to 2nd floor were very shallow and difficult to go down with larger feet. Other than that minor inconvenience, perfect stay.
- George (10/5): Great stay - Great place to stay. Location is fantastic and the host was very helpful and generous

- Emily (10/5): Hanakiya is the best would highly recommend - The inn keeper was so sweet and kind, it felt like a home away from home and a traditional experience.
- YUK MEI JOYEE (4/5): Insufficient facilities in the common area and shares toilets. Cleaning is not good in the entrance. As a whole, it gave - No Facilities is insufficient and cleaning is not good.

- Kate (10/5): Lovely staff and area - Owners are so lovely!! Great location near attractions
(10/5): A great place with a convenient location for exploring Kyoto - Our best stay in Japan. The room is not very spacious, but for travelers who are mainly exploring the city, it is perfectly acceptable. The Japanese lifestyle and culture are truly captured and conveyed. They provide futons, tatami mats, a Japanese-style toilet, and free rental of a kimono and an umbrella. We were happy to have a water cooler and the ability to make tea or coffee at any time. The room was serviced regularly. The common areas were also kept clean. The staff is very open, responsive, and hospitable, offering personal attention. We want to once again send our greetings from Russia and wish you all the best.
- Sandra (9/5): -
- Christian (10/5): A great location, a warm homely atmosphere, and staff whose genuine kindness made us feel completely looked after. -
- David (10/5): - Owners were so kind, they prepared snacks, fruit plates etc. for us, thank you so much!
- Rachel (10/5): I can't recommend this place enough - This place is awesome. Such a great deal for the location! You are mere steps to the fun energy of this part of Kyoto. You are literally steps from the Kiyomizu-dera Temple, which was, in my opinion, one of the raddest temples we saw. You're also really close to another beautiful brown pagoda that towers over the fun, winding walking streets. tons of shops and food right outside your door. and the hosts went above and beyond my expectations!! They were so warm and friendly, left us helpful maps in our room, and left little treats in our room each day. They were so kind and hospitable. Everything was super clean and comfortable. 100/10 would stay here again in a heartbeat.
- Peggy (8/5): -
- Daniele (8/5): -
- Veronica (9/5): -
- Cayleigh (9/5): Clean, welcoming, and amazing location - Hanakiya was a lovely spot to stay with super welcoming hosts. They often left us a little note or a surprise at the end of our day. They also upgraded our room to a larger one, which came equipped with super cozy bedding for a good nights rest. Would gladly stay again! It was a bit of a surprise to be staying in the annex, because the location is quite a ways from the main building where we thought we would be. however, this turned out to be very useful for catching the bus and other transit.
- C Riemann (10/5): Traditional and Homey - The man who greeted us was very kind. The room was clean and big. The beds were pretty comfortable. The house was so authentic and beautiful. The bathroom is shared, but only with a few other people and we never ran into eachother.
- Luis (10/5): -
- Gregory (10/5): - Perfect location and such a kind host
- Simone (10/5): Ottima guesthouse a Gion - Davvero ottima guesthouse. Posizione eccellente all'interno del quartiere Gion.
Je recommande ++++
- Jack (7/5): -
- Yanyan (10/5): - Location is great and great hospitality. The towel had previous customer's hair. The quilt is too thick, it's too hot for this weather.
- Charlotte (9/5): Lovely host, location, beds and price - Location was excellent. And the hostess was so so kind!
- Victor (9/5): - Friendly staff, clean, reasonable price, close to kiyomizudera. Can be a little inconvenient to get to other attractions around the city.
- sirr sinrael (10/5): -
- Niall (10/5): Great stay in Kyoto - Great location, lovely host! Nothing
- Phillip (8/5): Lovely place to stay and get a real feel of Kyoto. The owner was super kind! - Loved the feel of staying in a traditional house, and the owner is so kind, her snacks were a nice touch. Sharing a bathroom with a full house was interesting, and the beds on the floor were fun for 1 night, but after 3 our bodies were hurting.
- Sude Yagmur (8/5): -
- Susannah (10/5): Warm - This property is extremely well located in Gion, with a traditional feel (tatami rooms, etc). What makes it exceptional is the kind and generous proprietor, who went above and beyond to help me. Little touches, like handwritten notes and treats, made me feel especially welcome.
- Anna (8/5): -
- Thomas (10/5): - Amazing staff and lovely room, super kind and thoughtful.
- England (10/5): -
- Fabio (6/5): Overpriced basic accomodation on good location - Quiet location, next to temples and old Kyoto sites. Possibility to try out kimono pijamas on sale. Owner offered us fruits after a long hot day. Overpriced. Accomodation is basic, toilet is shared. You have to constantly hit the shower to get the water coming and that is featured as an eco shower. Check-out was at 10am and could not stay until 11am without extra payment, not even in the common area. We could hear guests coming and going from our room, fortunately they were respectful.
- Yi (10/5): Exceptional - The tatami room was nice, they have a common room, fridge and microwave, all good. I am already looking forward to stay here again if I go to Kyoto. Really near Kiyumizu-dera. Owner-san is super nice and cute too, very responsive, no hassle. I also like the bar nearby and the unagi shop. Nice! None, but please take note that the property is on a small hill slope, so, be prepare to walk a bit uphill daily, and you might want to get some snacks.
- Yamesha (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anonymous (9/5): Little Gem in Kyoto 🍓 - We instantly felt like home. The owner was super welcoming and friendly. They also make sure everything is cleaned every day. We could also take part to a very special experience with Iki, a zen meditation with a Buddhist monk, which we really enjoyed. Position is also really good to move around and visit the best spots in Kyoto. Would definitely recommend. Thanks 🫶🏼🌸 Nothing, everything was just very nice.
- Vilhelm (10/5): Exceptional - Absolutely tremendous host, couldn't have wished for more. Delicious snacks, quiet room, good location. Keep in mind, that though the neighbourhood is busy with tourists during the day, it's completely quiet at night. That's of course peace, but you're also pretty far from any action. Additionally, because it's so busy during the day, you should forget about taking the bus with luggage, or just at all. Maybe take the metro and walk, or take a taxi.
- Aaron (10/5): Best stay I’ve had in Japan! - The placement is absolutely perfect to get to any of the amazing shrines and the owners are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met, spoke great English and was incredibly nice and caring, the little picturesque inn is the perfect authentic Japanese experience I wanted to get, highly recommend to anyone that goes to Kyoto!
- Tashi (8/5): Very good -
- Wills (10/5): Best accommodation of our trip - This was by far our favourite accommodation of our three week holiday. The owners of the Inn truly made us feel incredibly welcome. Gave us fantastic suggestions for local coffee, helped us with the luggage company when there was an issue with one of our bags as well as finding a taxi for us while taking our bags up the big hill when leaving. The location is perfectly situated between various landmarks. When I come back to Kyoto I will be coming here again. NA. Perfect stay.
- Alina (10/5): Very lovely stay in a well placed location - Great location, near all the beautiful traditional streets, Kiyomizudera and lots of places to look at, shop, eat and rest.
The room was very comfortable and all the communal bathroom facilities were very clean and well kept
The hosts were so lovely and kind! Very friendly, gave us recommendations of a scenic beautiful route to walk through the area, which we did and the recommendation was amazing! I would’ve liked to have hair conditioner in the shower
- Nicole (10/5): Exceptional - We loved our stay at Hanakiya! The hosts were so kind and welcoming and brought us cut up fruit on one of the hot days. The location is great, just a few minutes walk from Kiyomizu-dera. The shower and bathrooms are shared but it never felt cramped. We stayed in the annex, which is a two minute walk from the main house. We would definitely stay here again!
- Emily (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christabella (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kevin (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jessica (10/5): Wonderful guesthouse in Gion, Kyoto - I had a wonderful experience at Hanakiya! The host was fantastic—very friendly and welcoming. The guesthouse's location is perfect, just a few steps away from Kiyomizu-dera Temple and all the charming temples and little shops in Gion. I would definitely return again. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it feel just like home. Highly recommended! I liked everything!
- Joel (10/5): Exceptional - Comfortable room in a great location. Can't say enough about the host She made great suggestions to "off the beaten track" temples and food options during our stay in Kyoto. She went out of her way to ensure that we had everything that we needed. Even brought us delicious fruit in the evening that hit the spot! Highly recommend!! None!!
- Neely (10/5): Perfect traditional guest house for groups - Wow! The most welcoming hosts we had on our two week stay, we fell in love with this place and would like to rebook in the future and our host even brought us strawberries on the hot day! Loved it Everything was great
- Stuart (10/5): Great stay, lovely owners! - Lovely owners and property in great location! Thanks so much for your hospitality.
- Maria (10/5): Cozy ryokan tucked away in a prime area - Wonderful location very conveniently down the street from Kiyomizu-dera temple, host was incredibly friendly and went above and beyond to make us comfortable, and the facilities were very cozy and clean! A lovely stay at a small ryokan for a great value.
- Toto (7/5): Good -
- Stina (10/5): Lovely Kyoto Stay - A great location with great walkability of old Kyoto The mini fridge was quite small for sharing with multiple guests
- Justin (10/5): Amazing host! - We loved the location and our host! She was very nice and accommodating, and spoke very good English. She was able to help me make reservations, and gave us free tickets to a shrine. The hotel is small and family owned, but is right in the center of all the good stuff. It's very quiet in there, and you can sometimes hear the door being shut from other rooms.
- Megan (10/5): Perfect stay - Great location, the lady who owns the property is great! Nothing
- Fillion (10/5): It was our best stay among the ones we did here in Japan - Traditional style
Location
Amazingly well served by the staff/owners
- Gowers (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tachung (10/5): Great experience, recommended place to stay in Kyoto - I had an amazing experience staying at Hanakiya with my family during our visit to Kyoto. The location was perfect—just a short walk to the main street leading to Kiyomizu-dera Temple and the surrounding scenic areas. The host, who lives nearby, was incredibly responsive and attentive, making sure every aspect of our stay was well taken care of. Staying in a traditional Japanese house provided a wonderful opportunity to immerse ourselves in the local living environment, adding a unique and memorable touch to our trip. :-)
(10/5): Exceptional -
- Thomas (10/5): Really great experience, excellent location, Kyoto is beautiful! - The location is amazing, the facilities are clean and tidy. The owners are really friendly and helped me get my bag back which was lost by my airline. They even left us an assortment of fruit one night!
- Tobias (10/5): Wonderful :) - A very cozy and warm, family lead accommodation. The owner is super friendly and cheerful. We loved our stay a lot. None.
- Hana (10/5): Exceptional - The accommodation at Hanakiya was the best we always felt at home when we arrived at the accommodation in the evening. There was always a warm message waiting for us from the hostess, who was very nice and gave us lots of great tips on places to visit and events not to miss on arrival, thanks to her we visited places we hadn't originally planned, that were ultimately the best in Kyoto. She even made us a surprise breakfast one day.
The room was simple and traditionally furnished, but absolutely sufficient for a longer stay, there were also common areas, everything was clean and cozy. The accommodation was right by the main sights in a beautiful neighborhood. Absolutely unbeatable for the price offered.
We definitely recommend it to everyone and we will remember our stay for a long time. Thank you very much again and we will be happy to come back again sometime.
- Monique (10/5): Exceptional - Had an extremely enjoyable stay! Staff were super friendly and always helped when needed (in addition to providing us with some tasty snacks). Located near several popular bus routes, and located in the old city, meaning famous temples and beautiful streets are only a short walk away.
- Shikha (10/5): Best Home Stay - Such warm and nice host, greatly Helpful. You'll feel like at home. They guided me through everything. Took the tour with them also, which was the highlight of my stay cause I got to cover almost all main attractions and got to know the history of culture behind. Highly recommended.
- Globetrotter101 (10/5): Exceptional - The futon comforters were so soft and comfy! The staff was extremely kind and friendly. This location is incredible, right next to Kiyomizudera and within walking distance of Gion. I prefer a stay with private bathroom, but overall this inn was very clean and quiet.
- David (9/5): traditional Japanese style accommodation on a budget - just around the corner from the hustle and bustle of a popular tourist area, this spot is perfect for various types of travellers. It is traditional and simple with a wonderfully caring and friendly host. The Japanese flooring and bed is a great way to experience the country and this is exceptional value for money.
- Nadjolinii (10/5): Exceptional - The hosts were the true gems of this place! They were so kind, took care of our luggage, recommended some nice places to visit.. They even brough Pokemon donuts for us to try! Super kind and sweet people.
The place was great, very cute, traditional, clean and close to soooo many temples in Kyoto (walking distance). Definitely recommend!
- Anne (10/5): Exceptional - All! Best welcoming we never see. Thank you a lot again for all. The room was great. All was clean. Nothing all was perfect <3
- Jeffrey (10/5): Had the loveliest time whilst staying in this inn. Situated in a quiet neighborhood and only minutes from the many adven -
- Catherine (10/5): Exceptional - Our host was amazing— she was so warm and welcoming! She even provided us with a fruit plate after a long day of exploring Kyoto. Highlight of our trip!
- Erin (10/5): Cute, hidden gem - The owners were so incredibly helpful, friendly and nice! They gave us some tips on places to see and made us feel so welcome. Staying here, you are very close to some shrines and main streets with gift shops, restaurants and kimono rentals. Highly recommend.
- Deniz (10/5): Exceptional - We loved everything about this place. Location is really amazing, we enjoyed the tatami room experience and it was really comfortable, also not noisy at all, we slept like babies. Bathrooms and toilets are shared but they are super clean, and we didnt really bump to other guests, so it felt private even. Hosts are a lovely couple.thank you for all your recommendations and help ❤️❤️ Nothing, awesome place ❤️
- Maria (10/5): Wonderful hostess and great location - The hostess was extremely hospitable and nice; we came back to fresh fruit and snacks and got a surprise breakfast free of charge. She also gave us good recommendations for activities. The tatami sleeping was a nice experience. Location was stellar. Sharing a shower and bathroom is not for everyone, but to be honest did not really make a difference to us. The doorways were a bit short for us, so my husband bumped his head on it a few times.
