Guest Reviews
- Lisa (10/5): Relaxing taste of Japan.. - Beautifully maintained building, gardens. Traditional Japanese foods, friendly and welcoming staff. Nothing

- Pia (10/5): Zen - I loved the detailed service, the room and all the facilities. My favourite part was the location, so quiet and calm. Very accessible to the bamboo forest and station. Food was delicious and gave me the chance to try dishes I would never have picked on my own. Everything was perfect.
- Alisha (10/5): Incredible, world class, can’t wait to return! - This was an unforgettable stay at a top class ryokan. The meals were divine, creative and Michelin grade. The rooms were minimalistic but had a beautiful view. The staff was amazing and went above and beyond. I know the tatami mats are traditional to Japanese inns but it was very uncomfortable and I didn’t sleep well. I wish there was an option for a thicker mat or some kind of upgrade.
- Caden (10/5): An amazing time. Likely to come back - Amazing location, Friendly staff, beautiful room and hotel
- Brittney (5/5): Lovely property, be aware of the dinner policy when booking - The room was gorgeous and very spacious, the in private onsen was also lovely and very peaceful. The breakfast included was excellent. The location was within walking distance to many attractions nearby (temples, gardens, bamboo forest). The location was right off a fairly busy road, which we didn’t realize when booking. I also booked due to the reviews saying the food was excellent as I was looking forward to enjoying a dinner at the property. However upon arrival we were informed that this was not included (which was no where listed in the booking options/confirmation email). They were not able to make any accommodation to do dinner even though we arrived well before the normal check in time and asked if they could make an exception.

- Wing han (10/5): Tremendous and exceptional ! - Everything is amazing. Very detail oriented services. Awesome food plating and serving especially the breakfast is a must try! Truly amazing The public bath in basement only provide indoor but they close out the outdoor pool. Would be great having the outdoor pool available in the public bath room

- David (10/5): Amazing!!! Highly highly recommend!! - Service was amazing!!! Great room with privacy!!! Absolutely nothing. Loved the experienced!!

- Sean (10/5): Exceptionally comfortable stay - Excellent location.
Impeccably clean.
Friendly staff. Drinks have to be pre-ordered for meals. No readily available bar besides what’s in the room’s fridge.

- Hui Hui (10/5): Exceed expectations - Everything. Staff, meals, room, facilities, service and location all perfect. I wish there is onsen outside, but what they have right now is exceptional.
- Lukas (10/5): High class hospitality with an unbeatable peaceful vibe, paired with fantastic food. - The food as well as the staff is simply exceptional.
One of the most peaceful and relaxing hotels we have ever visited. Excellent service and quality on all levels. Especially the traditional dinner is something very unique and 100% worth experiencing.

- Sophie (10/5): - This ryokan is a true sanctuary of peace and quiet. From the moment I arrived, I felt completely at ease, and my stay was deeply restful and recharging. The staff were exceptionally attentive, always anticipating needs with genuine warmth and care.
The daily breakfast and kaiseki dinner were a joy to look forward to—delicious, thoughtfully balanced, and made with ingredients that felt both fresh and wholesome. I was especially touched by the thoughtful gesture from the staff who, after noticing my bday on my passport, kindly added a special dish to my kaiseki dinner. It was an unexpected and heartfelt surprise that made my stay even more memorable.
Thank you to the entire team for such a meaningful and unforgettable experience.

- Huijoon (10/5): A Paradise in Kyoto - Rangetsu gave fantastic experience to my family; 2 Breakfast & 2 Dinner were totally different menus and unique. They were top class quality & taste. My family enjoyed comfortable facility and it was total relaxation !!
- Szu Yin (10/5): -
- Betchem (10/5): Great staff and a perfect stay! - It was perfect! I was welcomed so friendly by the staff, who was very attentive and kind the whole time. I never experienced such a warm hospitality. I was travelling alone and thought the single room would be small but it was really big and just stunning! The vibe of the hotel was very relaxing and everything was super clean. I could even enjoy the onsen for myself. The keiseki dinner and breakfast were phenomenal! A real experience. I hope I can come back one day. Thank you for everything! Nothing! Everything was outstanding!
- Derrick (10/5): - Staff, boarding, food, location, and amenities were incredible. Will be a return customer for years to come.

- Donovan (10/5): - This was the my first time staying at a Ryokan and Rangetsu will be hard to top. It's located in a beautiful area in Arashiyama right along a river. Everything was immaculately clean and the staff were super warm and welcoming. The food was also incredible. A great place to take a break from the bustle of the city. I would absolutely recommend staying here. Thanks Rangetsu!!
- Emma (10/5): Superb experience - This is hands down the best hotel I’ve ever stayed at. Everything was so well taken care off, the whole experience was just superb. From the design of the building, to the beautiful room, the little private zen gardens, the location in Arashiyama. The staff was friendly, professional and kind. I felt incredibly relaxed and serene during my stay. And then there was the dinner and breakfast. Every dish was special, featuring local ingredients and cuisine, artistically presented and prepared to perfection.
- Jill (8/5): - Breakfast was good and service was excellent The latest breakfast is available at 9 am, not good for night owl
- Xiujun (10/5): - The stay was good and I am glad that I opt for the kaseki dinner. The dinner was exceptional and so was the breakfast. Nil
- Craig (10/5): - Outstanding service, truly incredible Japanese breakfasts, lovely onsen, and a beautiful, peaceful space. It’s very expensive but worth the splurge for a zen experience.
- Mark (10/5): Amazing Ryokan For Authentic Japanese Experience - Location was amazing, just around the corner from the main road in Arashiyama and perfect to wake up early to have the Bamboo Forest practically to yourself.
Staff were very friendly and polite, adding to the Ryokan experience. They provided us with informative information, and prepared the room perfectly for us.
The room itself was amazing and spotless. We had a private onsen with an incredible view overlooking the river. Experience was perfect.
- Bohdan (10/5): - You can’t beat location if you have any plans in that part of Kyoto.
Both public and private baths are awesome!
Nulla
- Lisa (10/5): -
- Edith (10/5): - Everything was absolutely breathtaking and the service was truly exceptional. I wish we could've stayed longer. One of the biggest highlights of our Japan trip. The food was also amazing, I strongly recommend the kaiseki style dinner.
Niente! Abbiamo amato ogni singolo momento.
- Hannah (10/5): - This was one of the most beautiful locations we stayed at, unfortunately we only stayed for one night but we would definitely return. It’s a short was from the train station and nearby a number of shops and restaurants so the location was great. The ryokan itself was exceptional from our room and view to staff accommodations, we will definitely be back!
- Niko (10/5): - Service is amazing. Everything you can think of, they went above and beyond. Amazing! Course meal food was delicious. Room was very clean. I am glad to have experienced Rangetsu
- Elena (10/5): -
- Matic (10/5): -
- Anna (10/5): - Wonderful personnel
- Florian (9/5): -
- Anne (10/5): - Service is exceptional and the place is really beautiful. Food is also amazing.
- Alison (10/5): Rangetsu was everything a luxury ryokan should be and more. - Rangetsu was absolutely beautiful. It exceeded my expectations of a Japanese luxury hotel. The staff was especially conscientious and kind. The public bath wasn’t quite what I expected. In particular, I thought there was an outdoor bath available. The facilities were otherwise lovely—clean and luxurious.
- Rob (9/5): Superb - The suite was unreal. So amazing and HUGE. And it wasn't just clean. It was EXCEPTIONALLY clean. Like, I've maybe been in few rooms that were this spotless. Not a speck of dust or crumb to be seen.
The staff was unbelievable from the first step out of our taxi. They swarmed and we had 3-4 people taking our bags, guiding us inside, settling us in with tea and cookies. Every question, call, and interaction was done with immense respect and service. Top service here. No notes. Not much to be honest. I don't give perfect scores and if I had to nitpick - I'd say the food? But only because we're two Americans and not used to some of the traditional fare. Not their fault, it's ours.
Beds were a bit firm for my liking but my wife loved them.
- Bazal (10/5): Exceptional -
- Elisa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional - Authentic Japanese welcoming in traditional surroundings with modern touches. Enjoyed our in-room spa overlooking the rear garden with enough privacy (out in open air).
- Michael (10/5): Beautiful location, close to bamboo forest & the river; expect very traditional authentic dishes. - The location is amazing - right next to the river The menu was very authentic and traditional - which was a massive plus, but some of the dishes were a very different experience from the western diet / palate and probably an acquired taste.
- Aisha (10/5): Memorable experience - Our stay was a real highlight of our time in Japan. The atmosphere was calm and welcoming, the room was beautifully designed with traditional touches, and the service was attentive and thoughtful throughout.
We also opted for the traditional dinner (an additional cost), which turned out to be a great choice. The hotel reached out in advance to check for any dietary requirements, and each course was carefully prepared and beautifully presented—definitely a memorable part of our trip. A very special experience and we’re really glad we included it in our trip.
- Hyunah (10/5): Execellent Ryokan - Everything Nothing
- Sharan (10/5): Lovely place to spend at least a night and enjoy the Japanese experience - Breakfast was interesting. Authentic Japanese. Presented really well. Had a fun time having it. It was fine.
- Chien (10/5): Exceptional -
- William (10/5): Warrant a return visit! - Warm and helpful staff, great hospitality, cosy and well-designed room, and impressive in-room onsen - the fine detail has exceeded my expectations.
Staff volunteered to take photo in the front terrace. She got impeccable photo-shooting skills (with my iPhone 13 Pro Max) and I don’t need to touch up the photos at all. As a totally amateurish iPhone user I do have a lot to learn from her.
A bit pitiful is that I didn’t read clearly the fine prints on booking.com so only breakfast was included. However, the breakfast, served in-room, was fabulous - nice portion and remarkable taste that did energise me for the long day ahead. Food is clearly better than another ryokan across the bridge that I stayed for 2 nights last time.
I’ll definitely come back for the dinner. Not to mention that I miss the really really sweet team : ) Everything is awesome.
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Roman (10/5): Exceptional - You have to enjoy ones you are in Kyoto, that’s why Japan is the best in hospitality… from receptionist to the Chefs. Really fantastic atmosphere and hospitality. Thank you.
- Marjoloutre (10/5): Exceptional - Perfectly located to beat the crowds, this place isl heaven on earth. Fantastic traditional hospitality, exceptional food and quiet luxury. Loved every bit of it, including obviously the outside bathtube and waking up in front of a forest that looked like a painting. Did I mention the food? Thank you for having us.
- Jennifer (10/5): A magical stay - Everything was magical. The whole experience was perfect in every way. The food, the views, the staff. All perfection!
- Danube (10/5): quiet peaceful relaxing -
- Louna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Adrian (10/5): Our host was very kind and helpful. She also prepared a special dish to celebrate our honeymoon! - Everything Nothing. Everything was perfect.
- Helene (10/5): A calming, unique experience that is worth it! - The staff were so welcoming and helpful. It was a peaceful stay. Despite some construction work outside, no noise came through into our room. The suite was beautiful and the half-outdoor bath was stunning! We had a kaiseki dinner and breakfast, both were delicious and had a beautiful assortment of food. I would have liked to try the public bath, but I have large tattoos and could not. I recognize that this is my own problem, and nothing that the hotel needs to change!
- Rosa (10/5): Exceptional -
- Keeryong (9/5): Superb -
- Depaz (8/5): Very good -
- Philip (8/5): Very good -
- Faye (10/5): Splashed out on one night here and it was so worth it for the food and experience. - Food was amazing and the service was excellent. The location is beautiful - we had a Japanese style room with a private outdoor bath tub (which we didn't realise we would get!) which overlooked the river and the forest.
We got up early before breakfast to go see the bamboo forest at a tip from the staff and it's much less crowded early on. To be honest if we'd gone all the way to Arashiyama just to see the bamboo I think we would have been disappointed, but this stay made it worthwhile! We had to pay extra for drinks at dinner which we didn't realise beforehand, but the sake was delicious.
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional and relaxing - The room honestly blew us away and exceeded expectations. The staff were amazing and very helpful. The service was incredible also.
- Piek (9/5): Superb -
- Yeow (10/5): Simply the best. - There's nothing not to like. There's nothing to not like.
- Yanwen (10/5): Exceptional -
- Davis (10/5): Exceptional -
- Melissa (10/5): Rangetsu and their staff exceeded my expectations! We had a wonderful time. - The service was excellent. Every staff we met was kind, friendly, and thoughtful. They even helped us book a reservation for dinner in town which was delicious and welcoming to foreigners Plus, the facilities were comfortable, clean, well-maintained, and even had a section that looked to be recently remodeled. We also loved the food! Every meal was different, delicious, and impeccably timed to fit into our schedule. Fabulous location by the river! We had a neighbor who had his podcast on full volume, outside his room (when we were in the open-air onsen), which disturbed the peace, but that's no fault of Rangetsu or their staff. Truly, overall it was exceptionally quiet and very relaxing.
- Chelsie (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sharon (7/5): Good - Breakfast and dinner are amazing! The furniture etc showed wear and tear.
- Lori (10/5): Exceptional - We loved it all, the room was clean and beautifully done. Loved the private onsen.
- Remington (10/5): It was everything we hoped for. - The service of the staff was amazing from before arrival through after our stay. Before arrival, i bombarded them with dozens of questions, and they responded promptly and helpfully to each one of them. During our stay, we had a personal butler attend to our dinner, bedding, and every need. During check-out, there was a little hiccup with arranging our bags for delivery to our next hotel, but the staff offered to personally deliver our luggage instead which ensured our travel plans were not affected in any way.
- Steven (10/5): Exceptional - Great location and fantastic place.
- Ming (6/5): Pleasant - We had a room on ground floor facing the river so the view was very nice from the little garden. The lady who serviced our room is very nice, speaks good amount of English and tried to explain things. Room is rundown with lots of dirt and scratch marks on walls and doors. Small space for the price level, from the pictures it looks like there is a living space separate from the tatami room but it is just a studio room. For AUD1,400 per night I expect a lot more. Breakfast included were very mediocre, which felt like they had been prepared they day before or taken out of the fridge. the presentation was really nice, good for photos but the only dish I liked was the rice. Cleanliness was ok except I found someone else’s hair stuck between the tatami mat and doona. Location is ok as it’s river front but a bit far from JR station, about 15 mins walk. Overall, I’d say a price level half of that would probably be justified (?), but definitely not what we paid.
