Guest Reviews
- Agatha (6/5): - Private onsen facing river and woods Cleanliness.
- Manuel (9/5): -
- Jamie (8/5): Lovely people, way too much food. The pillows were hard. We were right on the road/ mountain side. It was very loud. - The outdoor bath It felt a little run down
- Miguel (10/5): An authentic ryokan! - Everything, especially the outdoor public and private onsens nestled in the heart of nature, where you can hear the sounds of the forest and the river, the authentic Japanese food, and the exceptional politeness of the staff. It’s an authentic ryokan, and I hope it stays that way! Nothing. Everything was excellent!
- Alexy (9/5): -
- Jocelyn (9/5): Really had a great time staying in Shiunso. - Staff are very helpful, polite and always smiling.
The place is quiet. The river that overlooks from the balcony is so calming.
Food is great. Nothing

- Yvonne (10/5): - Deze ryokan is heel bijzonder. Weinig keuze in tijd.

- Marc (10/5): Break from the city. Much needed stay. - The area was beautiful and perfect break away from the city. Waking up to the sound of the flowing river was an experience, let alone being surround by mountains of trees.
The onsen in particular was what we needed after copious days of walking throughout in previous visit of Osaka, Kyoto, & Nara. Just what our legs needed.
The food was delicious and each meal kept us filled throughout the day.
The futons we slept on were soft and we had one of the best sleep ever had.

- James (6/5): - Nice location Old fashioned could do with a bit of a update, no atmosphere, could of done with a choice of meals instead of just being given the food, bit bad you pay all that money to stay then when you check out you still have to pay a onsen tax you need to put that in the price...
- Jonathan (9/5): -
- Katherine (9/5): Beautiful and traditional experience - Beautiful view and private onsen. The staff were really friendly and the space was gorgeous. The food was delicious and it was a wonderful experience we all loved No child rates for dinner and breakfast made it an expensive night
- Zoë (3/5): This was not worth the money. - The view Our first meal was supposed to be prepared at 6:15. We peaked our head out of our room and saw our food sitting on a tray. Hit say there for at least 20 minutes before coming to us. It formed a dry layer since it was sitting so long. The flavor lbs were not to our liking. We’ve had so much great food and aren’t picky eaters but in our opinion in some of the dishes we’re inedible. For $500+ a night I would have expected a decent meal.
- Gross (10/5): Beautiful location and relaxing time with a wonderful, attentive and friendly staff. - Beautiful location. 40 minute bath included. Friendly staff.
- Clément (10/5): -
- Sharon (8/5): Very good stay. Would recommend - Breakfast and dinner served in room.
Onsen was very nice.
Room was very spacious. Would be better if staff more familiar with the major attractions and how to get there.
- Irina (8/5): Vistas espectaculares, comida deliciosa y abundante.

- Gero (10/5): Fantastic gem in Hakone - Having stayed in Ryokans and Onsen during various Japan trips, this takes the crown. Pretty much everything was what could be expected and then exceeds it. …nothing really. But again, it is what you expect: if you do not like the food, way of serving, the tatami mats etc, you will find negative bits.
- Viviana (8/5): - Il cibo
- Hoang (9/5): -
- Matthew (9/5): - Staff were very friendly and helpful! Beautiful location.
- Camila (10/5): Beautiful and amazing experience! - I was really surprised when arrived at the property as is much nicer than in photos! The peaceful of the river, the outdoor private onsen and not many tourists wandering around so didn’t feel crowded. The food was delicious and truly traditional- which that’s what I wanted a ryokan. The lady serving our food in the room was the so lovely and made our stay even more special! It didn’t feel old like in some comments I read here before booking - it’s traditional and comfortable. Actually it was the best sleep I had in my 3 weeks in Japan, the bed just hugged me, so cozy! Liked everything!
- david (10/5): - La gentillesse du personnel
- Juan (10/5): Peaceful traditional Ryokan with nice onsen - This is a traditional Japanese Ryokan, and we enjoyed it greatly. We loved the meals, the tatami room with futons, and the onsen. During our stay the hotel was not too busy, and we were able to have the public bath all to ourselves at times. The room had a nice view to the river.
The staff were not fluent in English, but went above and beyond to communicate with us and help us. All was good.
- Gazmend (9/5): -
- Samuel (8/5): -
- Demi (6/5): A traditional ryokan experience with kaiseki by friendly staff in a somewhat dated room. - I liked the overall location and quiet of the accommodation. The staff was also very friendly and helpful. The private outdoor onsen we booked in advance was also very relaxing. I asked for a deodorized room in advance and they did this very well also. The room itself felt incredibly dated and therefore I feel like we paid more than it was worth. I also wasn't particularly fond of the dinner and breakfast we received. One thing I didn't like very much was when they came to serve breakfast in the morning, they kept knocking on the door even though I asked for a minute or two because I was in the bathroom... We also reserved another private indoor onsen when we arrived, but the staff member forgot to write this down, so we couldn't make use of the onsen during our stay.

- Sara (9/5): Lovely Onsen. Delicious food. -

- Zijin (10/5): - Very clean, good service. Would definitely come again
- Renata (10/5): Echt japanisch! - Essen sehr gut, Lage sehr schön am Fluss, Onsen sehr schön, Zimmer sehr gross und gut ausgestattet
- Lucas (9/5): -
- Vanessa Carolina (10/5): -
- Marco (9/5): Tolles Ryokan, super Essen, sehr liebe Gastgeber. Empfehlenswert!

- Yury (9/5): Fantastic hotel to stay - The location of the hotel is fairly near to the train station. The hotel itself is on the riverbank of a picturesque stream. There are nice hot spring baths that are included in the price and also that can be booked privately. The staff is friendly and helpful. Dinner and breakfast are tasty. Overall, a great place to stay. Highly recommended. The hotel offers traditional Japanese clothes, however it would be great that larger sizes are also provided.
- Shao (9/5): Great first time onsen ryokan stay. - The meals here are exquisite and very filling. The outside onsens are beautiful and so restful. The staff were amazing. The outside and inside onsens rotate each day so go both days to experience both. And they weren't crazy hot so it was very comfortable, especially on cooler days. A bit dated, not the best views if facing the mountains and not the river and weird key policy. You have to give the key back every time you leave the hotel and when you go to the onsen and the room key chain also carries the key to the in room safe so it doesn't feel the most secured.
- Anastasia (8/5): Nice traditional Japanese style rooms with awesome food and onsen - -Great location a bit away from the very busy and super touristic main street
-Really nice onsen
-Fantastic breakfast and dinner
-Spacious room with amazing view -Strong smell in the room (it was constantly like living in a kitchen)
-very old bathroom, water pressure in the shower was quite weak. Had to shower at the onsen’s shower
- Wooldridge (10/5): -
- Hicks (10/5): Wonderful stay in a traditional, family owned Ryuken - Fantastic dining.
Excellent private in-door onsen (baths). western style rooms are dated (old-style carpet).
Japanese style rooms (tatami mat) are fantastic.
- J LTran (10/5): The best! - It was of the most beautiful places we’ve ever been. It’s an amazing inn to experience authentic Japanese place. Foods were amazing and the outdoor hot spring was truly spectacular. The hotel is a little bit older but the staff kept it super clean. There was also no transportation from the station to the inn. But it gave us a chance to explore the town
- Jerome (10/5): -
- Melanie (10/5): -
- Roberto (9/5): -
- Levy (9/5): Uma super experiência! - Ambiente e acomodação
- Elizabeth (3/5): Very disappointing for the price - I have never stayed at a hotel that offers such a juxtaposition of experiences. The food was superb - both dinner and breakfast were absolutely delicious with highlights including an incredible fish soup, wagyu beef and fresh sushi all beautifully served. The staff were very lovely - they were all very friendly and helpful. But the accommodation is extremely dated, the bathrooms are in poor condition and the beds are very uncomfortable. We paid a lot of money for our two nights - the daily tariff was almost double the rate we paid for a nice hotel in central Tokyo - so we were extremely disappointed with the overall package. The hotel looks like it was decorated in the seventies and hasn't been touched since. The carpets in the public areas were stained and the lobby was jam-packed with a mismatching assortment of chunky leather lounges. Our bathroom was dingy and the shower room smelt. Plus our beds had box spring mattresses with barely any padding so I could feel the springs digging into me all night. The pillows were uncomfortable and the bath towels were almost threadbare, they were so thin.
- Giampaolo (10/5): -
- Debora (10/5): -
- Megan (10/5): This was an incredible experience! The onsen was beautiful and relaxing and the staff were accommodating and welcoming! - It was a very beautiful and traditional Japanese hotel. The property was large, room spacious and view of the running river was incredible. Location was convenient but not easily walkable from the train station.
- Nicolas (9/5): -
- Melis (6/5): Dated property and not as luxurious as you would hope but the food and onsen are nice - The dinner and breakfast were really good. A lot of food, tasty, good variety; however, served in a rush without much of an ambiance. The outdoor onsen was nice, you do have to walk all the way across the bridge to get there however, the walk and the views were nice. The proprerty is really run down, super dated, not very clean. The walls, carpets etc were all stained and there was dust in a lot of places. The closets where they store the bedding looked pretty gross. It doesn't give you the luxurious ryokan feeling you expect at all. The location is fine, it's a walk uphill from the bus stop and there isn't much around but presumably you're eating and spending most of your time at the hotel once you return from the day's activities so that wasn't a huge deal.
- Johan (9/5): Great ryokan with friendly staff and amazing onsens. - Super friendly staff and great onsen. View on the river. Typical Japanese dinner and breakfast: I loved the explanation given by the lady serving both meals ! The River is just there so can appear noisy for some people during the night.
- Bryan (7/5): - Beautiful traditional ryokan, with a gorgeous view of a waterfall in the Hana River from our room. Facilities seemed like they needed a bit more care and maintenance in certain (but not all!) spots, especially for the high cost. The wooden floor boards around the open-air private tub in our room were split and required some care to step around. The men’s changing room for the public onsen smelled quite bad…I’m not sure what exactly the smell was. The temperature adjustment on the faucets in both the room and public onsen worked poorly, flipping between hot and freezing with no middle ground.
I really wanted to like it more, especially given the beauty of other parts of the facilities, but these were unfortunately significant distractions.
- Johanna (10/5): -
- Marie (10/5): Traditional stay - I had a lovely stay at this traditional Ryokan. The personal don’t speak lots of English but everyone was so kind and ready to help me when I had questions.
Dinner and breakfast were really good.
The bed was comfortable.
I booked the private outside bath and really enjoyed the experience.
Experiencing a traditional ryokan like that is definitely a must to do when visiting Japan Nothing
- Michele (7/5): -
- Raegen (7/5): - River view and private onsen across the bridge was really nice. Food was delicious and portions were large. Facilities and rooms are very outdated and don’t smell the best. Didn’t find it worth the cost.
- Mo-Jean (10/5): - Wonderful staff and great guest service. Japanese style room was exactly as shown in the photos on Booking.com. The room was very large, and the balcony overlooked the forest and river. Kaiseki in-room meal was slightly disappointing but the public outdoor onsen and staff totally made up for it.
