Guest Reviews
- mdcano (8/5): Great Stay, but Short on Towels-TWICE! - Great location.
Very good size rooms.
Very clean.
Only negative thing: We booked two rooms for two couples. Each room had a double bed and a single, but only one set of towels in each room. One room noticed before going to bed and went downstairs to get an extra set, but the other room didn’t realise until someone was already in the shower.
- 332lindajeans (10/5): Yet again always go the extra mile. - We always stay at Premier Inn The Gate and wouldn’t stay anywhere else.
We would like to thank Christina the Hotel Manager as every time we stay Christina is always so helpful and makes our stay more enjoyable. Christina is an asset to the Premier inn at The Gate.
I would also like to mention James and Lara from the restaurant they are also very helpful.
- CorbridgeGrapevine (4/5): Freezing expensive room - Very expensive compared to usual price. Bedroom was freezing. The heating wouldn't work. We went to bed with our clothes on
- leecZ3301SC (4/5): Not impressed - Cleanliness was very poor, fluff all over the floor, grime all around the taps, was very filthy, even a skid mark on the inner edge of the toilet seat, no soap in the hand wash or shower gel. Not impressed.
- sharonhK5384YY (4/5): Good location but that's it - Great location in the centre of Newcastle room was clean but the bed was tall so me being a small.person you need to jump up to get on the bed.bed was so uncomfortable the pillows were hard not a good night's sleep breakfast wasn't good sausages were chewy no eggs when I went bacon had more fat on than meat beans were nice overall iv had better nights in other hotels
- M1736RDjakeb (10/5): Clean room friendly staff - Stayed at this location for 1 night as had a business meeting in town the following day. Very good service from the hotel and clean room. Nothing to complain about.
- C58VVpatriciad (10/5): Great hotel - From checking in to going in the bar, great service, great staff and as always great beds..... there's a lovely girl who particularly stood out ..... Emily .....
- carolbZ1379QI (4/5): Cold food - Just had a gammon that we waited for over 30 minutes, blooming steak knife was so hot you couldn’t use it,the chips and peas were like warm , so sad you weren’t even busy , do your job properly
- F5417NGscotts (2/5): "Good night guarantee??" - Loud banging outside the room literally shaking the room from 5.30am. Was referred to the 'good night guarantee' by receptionist, called the number for it and was met with nothing but condescending attitude and bad service. Will not recommend the Premier plus rooms here. Disgusting.
- boxers409 (10/5): perfect breakfast - Great location for the Hotel especially if going there for the nightlife. Room was clean and tidy but very dated. Very quiet hotel no issue with noise, Good value for money. FOH staff for breakfast friendly didn't manage to get names. Taylor the breakfast chef was friendly and pleasant, her paoched eggs were cooked to perfection, food was fresh and replenished frequently, can't comment for other meal times due to only breakfast during our stay.
- lucifer_84 (10/5): Excellent as always - The staff here are so friendly and helpful. It really makes a difference and adds another night onto our holiday! They work very hard and really care that you’re getting good value and enjoying yourself. The receptionist was lovely and Emily at the bar was wonderful and very knowledgable about the drinks options. We always look forward to staying here and will continue to do so!
- Freedom822346 (8/5): Nice hotel, great staff - The hotel is only a few minutes walk to the airport terminal. You have to walk under the hilton double tree which at the time of our one night stay was £43 more to be 30 yards closer to the airport. Never stayed at a Hilton so obviously can't compare the two hotels. The staff were very pleasant and friendly from check in to check out. Usual premier inn bar menu, a little more expensive than your local village pub, and the restaurant menu had slight differences from the last on we stayed in at Liverpool airport but what we had was lovely. The room was tidy and bed was very comfortable. I would have given 5 stars but the only very minor thing I can pick up on is, it would benefit from a little TLC through out and an upgrade to the heating and air conditioning in the rooms. And what ever happened to normal toilet roll, those individual sheets are a nuisance. All in all a premier inn worthy of the name.
- Edinburgh_Sa (2/5): Small and cold room , no ventilation , staff unfriendly - Nothing good about it . Except negative side . I never been asked to fill from of my nationality , address , all customer details when I check in with a extremely hostile face ( seems like we did something wrong ) . This is new rule ? The room is cold , the heater will turn off after few minute work despite the room still cold . no ventilation .4 of us stayed tiny room , no ventilation , cold room , plus need to pay 9.99£ for park per night . Seems one of the lowest standard , highest charged Premier inn
- DarylT234 (10/5): Perfect way to start your holiday - The Premier Inn hotel is located about a three minute walk from Newcastle Airport. We have stayed here quite a few times before we go on holiday and I always find it to be a relaxing and stress free way of beginning the holiday because you are literally across the road from the airport so do not need to rush about. One of the perks of staying with the Premier Inn is the check out time is not until midday so you can get up, have a leisurely breakfast and then a short stroll over to check in.
This stay, we were going on Holiday at the end of September with a flight at 3 o'clock so we decided to stay the night before to avoid any stress.
One of the things we did this time which we did not do before was to take advantage of the meal deal available at the hotel and in the restaurant. For around £30 each, we were able to get a two course meal with a drink and unlimited breakfast the following morning which was definitely good value for money. Having an on site restaurant meant that we did notnjave to worry about having to go back into Newcastle to get food which made things incredibly convenient.
To get to the hotel, you can get the Metro from Newcastle to "airport" and when you get off the metro, make your way through the airport and out of the front of departures. Walk left around the car park and you will see a Double Tree hotel across the road. Walk through their car park to a gate that is unlocked and then you cross over the road and the hotel is there.
We arrived at the hotel about 6.30pm and were checked in by a lovely member of staff who was doing a double shift due to staff illness. The staff member was happy, professional and polite and answered my garage of questions about the restaurant before giving us our key card and us making our way to the our room.
The room was clean, spacious and comfortable with everything you would expect from a Premier Inn room, including tea and coffee making facilities, towels, handsoap and shower gel and a large comfortable bed. There are also blackout curtains which help with the comfort and plenty of space to store your luggage. There was also a bath and a shower should youbwish to freshen up.
For food, we went down to the bar and spoke to the gentlemen behind the counter who was lovely and polite. He explained that the restaurant was busy but we could order food from any table in the bar but we have to go to the bar to order it.
With regards to the promotion, there is a set menu thay you can choose from and some things do attract a supplement (including certain alcoholic drinks) but it was still worth the money.
We ordered our food and drink from the bar and took our seats. The bar is small but comfortable and it has a warming atmosphere. Our first courses arrived after about fifteen minutes and our mains followed about twenty minutes after they had been cleared. The food was hot and delicious and my lasagne was probably one of the best I've tasted in a while. The nachos were also nice as a starter and my husband's pizza was huge but he said it was delicious.
We finished dinner and went back to our room to relax for the remainder of the evening. The following morning we went down to the restaurant for breakfast and the staff member who seated us was very happy and nice. They take your hot breakfast order but you can pick as much as you want from the items on the menu and get more if you are done. There is also self serve bread cereal, fruit and yoghurt with a selection of juices and tea and coffee. The food was fresh, hot and delicious and it was a great way to start a very long day.
Overall, it was a great stay and I think the £90 we paid for the room and the £30 each for food was great value and money well spent. We will definitely be staying there again and eating at the restaurant again. Great service, excellent food, brilliant value and an excellent way to start the holiday.
- kjjess0p (8/5): Good location - Room was OK and clean, although did look out over a car park.
An easy walk from the railway station and close to the Earl Grey monument, which is central for shops and market.
- VickiDoubleYou (6/5): Noisy and in need of an upgrade - We checked in at 2am having just come off a flight back to the U.K. We’d advised the hotel in advance of our late arrival. We were checked in quickly and our room was ok, tired and in need of an update. Clearly the room hadn’t been vacuumed in a while going by the mess of the carpet.
The fire alarm went off at 7am not once but twice! Then just before 9am we’re woken again by what sounded like drilling from the room above! When we mentioned the noise at check out the receptionist said she had no idea what the noise was or where it was coming from. On exiting the hotel there were work men going to and from the hotel carrying boards and wearing tool belts! We could hazard a guess who was making the noise!
- 355traceym (6/5): Couples night out - Stayed her last night, fridge doesn't work, told them last time we stayed it was broken, heating fan system didn't work either, toilet wouldn't flush properly also reported last time, and yes stayed in the same room as last time too, over 3 months ago
Lovely on reception yesterday let us check in at 250, and unlike the gentlemen that was on reception last time wanted 15.00 for the 10 mins we needed to check in early, yes I know we were 10 mins early!!, most places let you at their discretion
The room was clean , mould to the windows, shower screen, inch thick of dust above the headboard, yes its a big hotel, but these things ruins it, as basically human skin !!!!!
No chocolate in the premier plus rooms, I know times a re hard, but its the simple things you look forward too, my god the pillows were like bricks and now have a very sore neck, once again only 1 set of towels for 2 people , booking was made for 2
Can't fault the breakfast as lovely and 2 nice ladies in dining area, very cheerful and helpful
Hope the next time we stay is much more cleaner , also the spy hole blocked up with tissue!!!!!
- IAmGuyster (6/5): Cheap but noisy - The hotel itself is fine. You pretty much get what you pay for. It's a bit tired looking. The restaurant is nice and the staff are lovely. However, at this time of year, the rooms are freezing. There is heating but turns off when the lights are out so if you pop out you come back to a very cold room. Also, the rooms are very poorly insulated against sound. The aircraft overhead are incredibly loud and I was woken many times by our neighbours laughing or snoring. One of the worst sleeps I've had in hotel for a while. I realise that the sound of planes at an airport hotel sounds like a daft thing to complain about but I have stayed many times in the Hilton over the road and can barely hear anything like that in their rooms.
Use this hotel if you are looking for a cheap bed but if you dont assume you'll get a restful sleep.
- Trevor8920 (4/5): Beware ripoff parking charges!! - We stayed a night and booked the overnight parking (£9.90 for what we assumed was 24hrs). We arrived approximately 3pm. We checked out of the hotel by the mandatory midday next day but didn’t move our car out of the carpark until 1.27pm, which we assumed would be ok (no signage to suggest otherwise).
We were charged an extortionate £75 for apparently overstaying the parking by less than 90mins!
So if you’re parking here, just be careful.
- stephenhW4645EQ (8/5): Good place to stop over after a late flight - After a long flight it was great to walk the short distance over to the airport Premier Inn. Quickly checked in and had rooms on the third floor, which were clean and comfortable.
Had a great PI breakfast in the morning, served by the wonderful lady who has been there for years and is so efficient.
If you are walking to or from the terminal make sure you have the code for the gate at the Hilton Hotel opposite (C3579) as it saves you carting your luggage round the long way.
- Kdav1es (4/5): Room not usual Premier Inn standard - Stayed here for an over night after flying into Newcastle in small hours. Didn’t actually check in til 3.30am. We were exhausted so didn’t complain at the time. The room smelt of bad damp. The curtains were falling away at parts and covered in dust. One of the teaspoons was dirty. Probably the worst room I e ever stayed in at any Premier Inn. We use them quite frequently. I did speak to someone the next day and thought I might have got the car park fee waived. Perhaps the hotel was extremely busy but I do think we were papped in a room that perhaps isn’t often used. It was a ground floor room. The beds, as always, were comfy enough and we didn’t hang about.
- 929nikij (10/5): Brilliant staff much appreciated - You always know what you are getting at a Premier Inn and this is no exception. Clean, simple and practical . Comfortable beds, great showers. Ok good.
The staff here particularly were amazing. With no exceptions, nothing was too much trouble and they were engaging and fun and personable. Great stuff guys!!
- 701geraldiney (10/5): Service with a smile - A special shout out to Aidan M ,our wonderful server on 15 th October at the in -house restaurant of Premier Inn The Gate Newcastle. Pleasant , courteous , friendly and efficient -thank you so much Aidan -you made our evening ! 😊
- L4882HYwilliamm (10/5): Great staff. - It was an excellent stay From checkin, parking evening meal and breakfast ,the staff were friendly and efficient without being intrusive . I've used this hotel on a regular basis and have no hesitation in recommending it.
- julietA1450KR (8/5): Premier Inn Newcastle City Centre - Stayed at this hotel for a football game at St James Park. Real central location. The stadium is literally a 5 minute walk from the hotel.
The room was nice & clean, with the usual comfy bed. Aircon not brilliant, could have done with being a little more powerful. The breakfast was lovely, couldn't fault it and the staff were very engaging when we went down to eat.
To say its in the centre of Newcastle, its very quiet and bar being a bit warm due to the poor aircon, we had a peaceful nights sleep.
Would definitely go again
- Stephe_travels (10/5): Comfy bed and pillows! - I stayed two nights. Location wise, it’s right in the city centre near everything but well soundproofed…. I didn’t hear a thing either night (and I’m a light sleeper). The bed and pillows were really comfy. The room was spacious and laid out well. The breakfast was nice and the staff were all really kind and helpful (especially the lady cooking the breakfast each day). I arrived early so was able to store my luggage for the day before checking in later that evening!
- Navigator241475 (10/5): Co-op Hotel - This was a trip down memory lane for us - this Premier Inn has been tastefully created from Newcastle's Co-op building built in 1880 retaining the character of that period.
Pre - arrival requirements were efficiently met, the room character, quality and functionality were excellent.
- samanthajV2403JF (10/5): Family Friendly - Family friendly, room was very clean. Staff were amazing would definitely stay again. Brilliant location as we had theatre tickets nearby.
- GlobeTrotting826018 (10/5): Super hotel break - An excellent one night stay which was a bargain as it included breakfast. We received a warm welcome from the knowledgeable Receptionist. The room was clean and super quiet. The bed was very comfy. The hotel is well located for exploring Newcastle and only 10 minutes walk from the train station. There was a good choice of items for breakfast and everything tasted delicious.
- Traveler19777487710 (8/5): great location & super clean! - Came here just to go to the open day at the university and was pleasantly surprised! So clean and the room was much larger than other premier inns I’ve stayed at. Really central location too which is perfect if you want to go for food/go on a night out (plus it’s a 10 minute walk from the train station which is such a bonus!).
- HG1970 (10/5): Ideal city centre hotel - The hotel location is ideal for our needs, the hotel was clean and well presented. The Room was very good with everything needed to ensure we enjoyed our stay. Staff throughout were excellent, courteous and helpful. Plenty of choices for breakfast which was all well cooked. Big shout out to the Bar+Block restaurant, we ate in there on the Friday night of our stay and the food was fantastic as were the staff who served us. Will definitely use again and recommend
- debbiet173 (10/5): Great Location for Newcastle city center - Great location with easy access to Eldon Square, The Light Center etc. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Though based in the city center the noise levels are acceptable. Staff are helpful and friendly.
- georgiamelodieh (2/5): Smelly room with dirty facilities and poor ventilation - I was so disappointed with this stay at Premier Inn at The Gate Newcastle. At soon as I opened the hotel room door for room 245 a wall of sour musty smell hit me. On top of that, the hand wash bottle in the bathroom was disgusting, covered in some bizarre sort of gunk (see photo). The windows also don't open with a supposed ventilation system which might have even been the source of the horrid smell. I stay at Travelodges often for work and thought a premier inn would be slightly more comfortable, and instead it was one of the worst hotel stays I've never had. If I wasn't busy attending a conference I would have requested changing room, but the three night stay felt like a complete rip-off given what was provided. I recommend staying elsewhere and definitely avoiding room 245.
- Verr (6/5): - This property was not easy to get to - we had to go into a neighboring hotel to inquire how to get to it by foot.
The room we had was a handicapped room and very busy with grab bars etc - this was not a last minute booking.
The pillows were flat and the room was clean but tired.
- NeilandLauraCarlisle (4/5): Tired, dirty and disappointing - Having stayed at many Premier Inns over the last thirty years, including this one, I was surprised to discover how far this hotel has fallen in recent years. My room (an accessible ground floor room) was badly scuffed and marked on every wall, with a mysterious brown stain on the carpet, a dead spider on the ceiling and a dead cranefly stuck to the bathroom door. Everything from the curtains to the old pictures on the walls felt tired and dated, and having to pay £10 for parking at an outdoor booth before you leave (rather than when you arrive) is somewhat unintuitive.
On the upside, the staff were friendly, bar prices were reasonable, and I did sleep well once I'd established all my room guests were deceased.
- joannawV1882VA (10/5): WOW, THANKYOU - THE MOST JOLLY RECEPTIONIST I HAVE EVER SEEN!
Your staff here are amazing, always smiling even in terribly busy situations. Emily on reception had a good laugh with us, checked us in promptly and gave us all information needed. She checked in on us during our stay while passing reception too! absolute star of a first impression.
The bar was typically busy but didn't stop the bar staff working hard to get through their orders.
food is standard and nice weatherspoons type, but definitely worth the dinner deal they do!
We will always stay before our flight! SEE YOU AGAIN!
- Per (10/5): Clean and close to airport - Nice and clean room very close to the AirPort, was perfekt.
- geoffhT1481NA (4/5): This Hotel needs an update the rooms are old and tired - The place needs an update, the bar and restaurant were nice, but the rooms are old and tired, but the rooms need updating.
- joannamS5023LI (10/5): Lovely staff and service - YOUR STAFF ARE AMAZING!
i got checked in by a young lady Emily who gave us every bit of information we needed from the start and throughout our night.
Restaurant food was standard pub grub, nothing to complain about, got served by Katie she was lovely. we then moved to the bar and got lovely jolly service off Loui, had an amazing sleep, and got a lovely send off by a gentleman on the reception desk at 5am! Not one person was grumpy and all had smiles on their faces, you must be doing something right as a hotel!
- F6549UOkatec (2/5): Health Hazard - The 'coolest' my room ever got was 28.5C. The pathetic fan in the room just moves hot air around as there is zero circulation possible because of the ridiculous restriction on the window preventing it opening more than 6 inches. Even if you allowed 12 inches it might make a difference. The irony being that the very thing supposed to be for safety & comfort is unsafe and unhealthy is lost on the H&S buffoons responsible for this nonsense - I am still feeling poorly several days later.
- tr250man (8/5): Typical Premier Inn - Easy check in and typical double room with extra sofa/bed. As others have noted the rooms can be very hot, there is no true air-conditioning, only heating.
One fact that the hotel does not make obvious is that there is no facility for a full breakfast for people leaving for an early flight, only a very small continental selection. The web site says breakfast available from 3am, but this will be very basic. If you pay in advance for the full you do not get what you have paid for
- Stay41078620986 (2/5): Noisy and hot room - Stayed here a few times over the years prior to flying the next day for our summer holiday. The rooms and pub/restaurant are looking really tired and worn in need of a makeover now. our room this time was very warm when we walked in- there was a desk fan switched on, fine. When we returned to our room to sleep and turned the desk fan off (as it was too noisy to leave on during the night) we realised our room was right next to a big kitchen/air conditioning unit outside which was extremely loud. So we had to sleep with the window shut to block this noise out therefore having a very uncomfortable and hot night. It was too late to go and make a fuss/change room (2 children with us too) we just made do. The hotel must realise this is the case hence putting the desk fan on to cover the noise!
- Elisabeth (4/5): - Too warm, plug in the zink was stuck, so had to use the bath for washing hands etc, shower fixed on the wall
- Robert (8/5): - Im using this hotel more and more. Its not huge so best book ahead and also evening meal time can get busy. Very good buffet breakfast if your flight allows you to have it.
- Andrew James (10/5): - Good breakfast and comfortable rooms
- Robert (8/5): - Very handy for the Airport and there is a good breakfast menu and bar area. There are small pieces of paper at reception that have the code for the gate under the Doubletree .....
