Guest Reviews
- Philwestwood (6/5): Robots and vibrating headboards - Nice clean landscaped surrounds - one of the better PI settings I've seen, and a pretty safe location I would say. However I rang 11 times in the 24 hours before my stay to try and request a quiet room and each time 'the Virtual Receptionist' answered and told me I was being put through to (the human) receptionist. However every time the phone then rang for two minutes and then went dead. Where were all the humans?
I did eventually get a quiet room but it was adjacent to an extractor unit or generator which vibrated and hummed loudly all evening and most of the night and made the headboard of the bed vibrate at high speed (!).
The window couldn't be opened at all but the room didn't get stuffy and there was no outside noise (such as traffic) during my stay. Other guests were pretty considerate (it was Monday night).
The reception experience was very impersonal and the impression given was that the guests sort themselves out via touchscreens and do not require human interaction. This experience was cold and impersonal: you need to be greeted by a human and not a computer when you arrive at a hotel.
- mdcano (8/5): Great Stay, but Short on Towels-TWICE! - Great location.
Very good size rooms.
Very clean.
Only negative thing: We booked two rooms for two couples. Each room had a double bed and a single, but only one set of towels in each room. One room noticed before going to bed and went downstairs to get an extra set, but the other room didn’t realise until someone was already in the shower.
- 332lindajeans (10/5): Yet again always go the extra mile. - We always stay at Premier Inn The Gate and wouldn’t stay anywhere else.
We would like to thank Christina the Hotel Manager as every time we stay Christina is always so helpful and makes our stay more enjoyable. Christina is an asset to the Premier inn at The Gate.
I would also like to mention James and Lara from the restaurant they are also very helpful.
- leecZ3301SC (4/5): Not impressed - Cleanliness was very poor, fluff all over the floor, grime all around the taps, was very filthy, even a skid mark on the inner edge of the toilet seat, no soap in the hand wash or shower gel. Not impressed.
- 938angusa (2/5): Overcharged - Car parking was unexpected and overcharged me which I could not get back the hotel said they could do nothing about it which was poor
- sharonhK5384YY (4/5): Good location but that's it - Great location in the centre of Newcastle room was clean but the bed was tall so me being a small.person you need to jump up to get on the bed.bed was so uncomfortable the pillows were hard not a good night's sleep breakfast wasn't good sausages were chewy no eggs when I went bacon had more fat on than meat beans were nice overall iv had better nights in other hotels
- M1736RDjakeb (10/5): Clean room friendly staff - Stayed at this location for 1 night as had a business meeting in town the following day. Very good service from the hotel and clean room. Nothing to complain about.
- robertmA1658HC (10/5): Consistent Quality - My friends and I are in a rock band and over the last couple of years have stayed in a lot of premier inns. The quality of the rooms and friendliness of the staff has been consistent all over the country.
- F5417NGscotts (2/5): "Good night guarantee??" - Loud banging outside the room literally shaking the room from 5.30am. Was referred to the 'good night guarantee' by receptionist, called the number for it and was met with nothing but condescending attitude and bad service. Will not recommend the Premier plus rooms here. Disgusting.
- boxers409 (10/5): perfect breakfast - Great location for the Hotel especially if going there for the nightlife. Room was clean and tidy but very dated. Very quiet hotel no issue with noise, Good value for money. FOH staff for breakfast friendly didn't manage to get names. Taylor the breakfast chef was friendly and pleasant, her paoched eggs were cooked to perfection, food was fresh and replenished frequently, can't comment for other meal times due to only breakfast during our stay.
- johnrC2758XW (10/5): Special thanks to Jane and Tammy. - Used this hotel on many occasions to meet up with family and always get an excellent service with clean comfy rooms. The staff are always friendly especially Jane and Tammy who always make you welcome and your stay special.
- gordonmL6066AK (10/5): Brilliant stay - Staff very friendly and chatty room nice and clean and very quiet had a great sleep and a great meal it the beefeater next door will be back this time next year
- jonathank7 (8/5): A good stop over... - Having to visit the area at short notice, my wife and I styed at the Premier inn, Newark for a night last week, and all was fine.
Staff were friendly and helpful.
Our room was a standard one, and none the worse for that, it had all we needed for a short stay...and it was my fault for not asking for an extra pillow.
The £5 overnight parking fee was a nuisance, but it's difficult to see how it could be avoided or 'built into' the nightly cost given the car park is shared.
The Beefeater next door is handy after a long drive.
Premier Inns do what they say on the tin, no more but no less.
Recommended.
- 59gregoryo (8/5): Great experience and Premier Inn - Nice experience both at the hotel and beefeater. The staff were cordial and friendly. I would recommend staying at this hotel. The room was clean and shiny as well
- J1108OLtraceyw (10/5): Lovely family break - Lovely place to stay. Spotlessly clean. Super friendly staff who can’t do enough to help you - Tammie, Magda, Charlie, Jane and Manu are a credit to Premier Inn. The breakfast and evening meal was delicious and great value too.
- stuartbM4878BF (8/5): Good hotel, McDonald's next door! - Great welcome from Vicki on Reception. The usual good room and comfortable bed. Only blip was that the two "soft" pillows in the case were in fact hard, like the ones on the bed. Something which is increasingly the case in Premier Inns these days it seems. In fairness, I did not raise this at the time as it was late and I just wanted to sleep.
- L3086YCjoanned (10/5): Great premier inn! - Fast check in with lovely woman at desk. Car park on site with charges. Room was clean and spacious for a family of 4. Quiet rooms no outside noise at night. Breakfast was lovely and service was good. Can’t complain. We use premier inn often and we would use this one again!
- kjjess0p (8/5): Good location - Room was OK and clean, although did look out over a car park.
An easy walk from the railway station and close to the Earl Grey monument, which is central for shops and market.
- andygL6278HH (10/5): Our trip to Southampton. - We used the hotel as a stop off on the way to Southampton Port. We received a warm welcome and the staff were extremely helpful. Evening meal and breakfast were great and the room very comfy. We will definitely recommend this hotel.
- matthewlP3086RM (8/5): Free the Wi-Fi - You shouldn’t have to pay for the fast WiFi that’s a clear rip off, and also parking should be free apart from that standard premier inn
- 355traceym (6/5): Couples night out - Stayed her last night, fridge doesn't work, told them last time we stayed it was broken, heating fan system didn't work either, toilet wouldn't flush properly also reported last time, and yes stayed in the same room as last time too, over 3 months ago
Lovely on reception yesterday let us check in at 250, and unlike the gentlemen that was on reception last time wanted 15.00 for the 10 mins we needed to check in early, yes I know we were 10 mins early!!, most places let you at their discretion
The room was clean , mould to the windows, shower screen, inch thick of dust above the headboard, yes its a big hotel, but these things ruins it, as basically human skin !!!!!
No chocolate in the premier plus rooms, I know times a re hard, but its the simple things you look forward too, my god the pillows were like bricks and now have a very sore neck, once again only 1 set of towels for 2 people , booking was made for 2
Can't fault the breakfast as lovely and 2 nice ladies in dining area, very cheerful and helpful
Hope the next time we stay is much more cleaner , also the spy hole blocked up with tissue!!!!!
- karenbU4996TP (10/5): Exceptional place to stay - Highly recommend. Our family had a fabulous overnight stay. Three rooms all at the top end of what you expect from a Premier Inn. We had a delicious and memorable celebratory evening meal with special thanks to the exceptional staff. Breakfast time was well managed, no queuing, everything you expect was available and there was a relaxed atmosphere. Everywhere was very clean. Praise again for the friendly, attentive staff. Secure on sight car park. We wished we were staying longer.
- C5750WDclaireb (10/5): Helpful staff and nice extra touches - The hotel was just as I have come to expect from Premier Inn… clean, comfortable and a reliably good stay. A Halloween welcome pack for our child and an exceptionally helpful and friendly member of staff on reception (Abbey) were really appreciated.
- eileenwP8815NA (10/5): Abby friendly receptionist - Room clean with easy parking. Receptionist Abbey really helpful to my husband who is disabled suggesting we had a ground floor room
- G8685LStracyr (10/5): Happy Memories - Great stay, lovely location, came for the racing. We were treated to bubbles as we arrived. Jane offered us free parking & WiFi & looked after us throughout our stay.
- 975natasha (10/5): Great premier inn - Great room in a nice area! Rooms were clean and staff were very helpful and friendly! Did not hear noise from any other rooms so had a good sleep for both nights!
- Travel47723054325 (10/5): Great stay - We had a great stay at the premier inn for our friend’s wedding! The staff was always available and helpful. The breakfast was very good. There was a taxi service we could easily call from the reception, which was helpful because Uber is not as reliable in Newark.
- hell0000000000 (10/5): Great - Really great hotel. Clean. Free breakfast was great. Easy and hassle free. Really clean everything was pretty standard
- O8454XVjasonh (10/5): Work trip - Very smooth and welcoming check in with Vicky at reception. Even helped me with my bag as I have sciatica at the minute!!!
- 957loisa (10/5): Great location - Great location, lovely staff. Breakfast was cooked fresh which was a lovely touch.
Close to a big Tescos Will definitely be returning.
- I8048BEandym (10/5): Overnight stay - Swift check in, very friendly and polite reception staff. Room nice and tidy. Hotel easy to find. Great value for money. Will stay here again if in the area.
- TravelllingGirl (4/5): Understaffed, terrible Service - This premier inn is in a really great location with great routes onto major roads.
Ample car parking although can be tight if driving a larger van or small van. Parking charges are currently £3 per night.
Booking in is horrendous. There is no front desk. You are expected to use auto check in machines. I have used these with no issues at other premier inns. They had run out of printer paper and failed to sync the keys for all three parties booking in.
We pressed the button for assistance but none came. We ended up needing to walk into the restaurant to flag a member of staff.
The staff were friendly but clearly too understaffed too actually provide a good service.
Rooms were standard for premier inn with a lovely comfy bed.
The real problem was the restaurant. Breakfast is standard but the evening meal would get 0 stars. At around 1700 we tried to book a table for 1800. We were told they only allow 8 people per 30 minute slot and that the earliest they could fit us in was 2000.
At 1800 we walked past to see only 2 tables in use but were still told to come back at 2000.
We arrived at 1950, were shown to a table and and by 2000 orders had been taken. Our food arrived at 2120, and some of it was cold.
An hour an twenty minute wait for food is unacceptable. Staff tried their hardest but it is simply too understaffed.
We had pre ordered a meal deal, and by 2200 desert still hadn’t arrived and with early starts all round we decided to leave without.
- Departure45077039252 (10/5): Very welcoming and efficient receptionist - Great experience. Clean room lovely staff. We were welcomed and our check in was very smooth. Rooms up to the usual good standard
- 382tammiem (10/5): Fantastic clean and friendly - Excellent hotel lovely grounds clean comfortable rooms breakfast lovely and Jane and Tammie were lovely and friendly evening meal good for the money and lovely friendly staff
- W2221FMrobertg (6/5): Beware of parking - Stoped off here for a meal while visiting Lincoln had difficulty parking as coach taking up a lot of spaces got into reception first thing I did was put my car registration into the screen had meal all was fine But when got back home to Telford had had parking ticket for unauthorised parking £100 so please be aware of were you park
Parking ticket says I was parked on premier inn car park
- 929nikij (10/5): Brilliant staff much appreciated - You always know what you are getting at a Premier Inn and this is no exception. Clean, simple and practical . Comfortable beds, great showers. Ok good.
The staff here particularly were amazing. With no exceptions, nothing was too much trouble and they were engaging and fun and personable. Great stuff guys!!
- 701geraldiney (10/5): Service with a smile - A special shout out to Aidan M ,our wonderful server on 15 th October at the in -house restaurant of Premier Inn The Gate Newcastle. Pleasant , courteous , friendly and efficient -thank you so much Aidan -you made our evening ! 😊
- robbU1179KN (10/5): Highly recommend - Had a great stay over at the Newbury South Premier Inn. It’s out of the way so it’s nice and peaceful. The beds are so comfy and the air conditioning was great.
Jane the manager couldn’t have been more polite and helpful.
The chef Jess makes a fantastic breakfast.
Highly recommend 5*
- jemorgan48 (10/5): Very Nice - This is the third time here and agin excellent service , the room was clean , a slight mix up with a family room but it was probably my fault but the lady on reception managed to sort it quickly and efficiently. All the staff were friendly and helpful a special mention must go to Charley who went the extra mile to make our stay ( 9 family members of all ages ) satisfying and trouble fr
- julietA1450KR (8/5): Premier Inn Newcastle City Centre - Stayed at this hotel for a football game at St James Park. Real central location. The stadium is literally a 5 minute walk from the hotel.
The room was nice & clean, with the usual comfy bed. Aircon not brilliant, could have done with being a little more powerful. The breakfast was lovely, couldn't fault it and the staff were very engaging when we went down to eat.
To say its in the centre of Newcastle, its very quiet and bar being a bit warm due to the poor aircon, we had a peaceful nights sleep.
Would definitely go again
- Stephe_travels (10/5): Comfy bed and pillows! - I stayed two nights. Location wise, it’s right in the city centre near everything but well soundproofed…. I didn’t hear a thing either night (and I’m a light sleeper). The bed and pillows were really comfy. The room was spacious and laid out well. The breakfast was nice and the staff were all really kind and helpful (especially the lady cooking the breakfast each day). I arrived early so was able to store my luggage for the day before checking in later that evening!
- Navigator241475 (10/5): Co-op Hotel - This was a trip down memory lane for us - this Premier Inn has been tastefully created from Newcastle's Co-op building built in 1880 retaining the character of that period.
Pre - arrival requirements were efficiently met, the room character, quality and functionality were excellent.
- samanthajV2403JF (10/5): Family Friendly - Family friendly, room was very clean. Staff were amazing would definitely stay again. Brilliant location as we had theatre tickets nearby.
- GlobeTrotting826018 (10/5): Super hotel break - An excellent one night stay which was a bargain as it included breakfast. We received a warm welcome from the knowledgeable Receptionist. The room was clean and super quiet. The bed was very comfy. The hotel is well located for exploring Newcastle and only 10 minutes walk from the train station. There was a good choice of items for breakfast and everything tasted delicious.
- Traveler19777487710 (8/5): great location & super clean! - Came here just to go to the open day at the university and was pleasantly surprised! So clean and the room was much larger than other premier inns I’ve stayed at. Really central location too which is perfect if you want to go for food/go on a night out (plus it’s a 10 minute walk from the train station which is such a bonus!).
- W6263GNalexj (2/5): 'Good Night Sleep Guaranteed ' - except the fire alarm - One member of staff was very rude to me and my dad on our last morning before check out (15th September), she didn't seem aware of how to deliver good customer service, or even what Premier Inn services offered: she didn't know the breakfast was 'unlimited' and told me I couldn't eat anymore - I pointed out it is unlimited yet she couldn't have cared less, and proceeded to monitor us eating the small plates we had. The night before we were woken up due to a fire alarm at the Premier - at 3am, so of course we didn't have a good night sleep 'guaranteed' or feel our best the next day, I couldn't even go back to sleep after the fire engines left around 4:30am, and we were already preemptively stressing about driving to Oxford...yet when we asked this lady about Premiers 'good night sleep guaranty' policy: which was written in light up words by the reception desk, after I read through the policy beforehand - she was completely dismissive, giving us a baffled/snarky attitude saying it was a fire, and how can we want a refund when it was out of their control, when the reality was the fire alarm was caused by staff negligence, letting a recently operated microwave catch fire and setting the alarm off. She acted so harshly to us despite her knowing full well we were woken by a fire alarm, then made it out like we're asking something ridiculous, leading to my dad storming off and me following before we drove on, we were denied any help, sympathy or options to resolve our issue. So I now have a big problem with Premier's 'good night sleep guaranty' - this was easily the worst night sleep I've ever experienced at a hotel, but we received no recompense even with this very broad policy - we had a terrible night sleep, and only wanted the last night refunded. Either way, had this lady been more understanding or wanted to try help, I'm sure me and dad wouldnt have stormed out feeling dismissed, a little kindness would have gone a long way that day. having worked in retail/hospitality for years, I expect to be treated how I would treat a customer, so without mincing my words this staff member should be fired, she had no respect to us or the hotel she works in - I give props to the other staff knowing this is who they have to work with. Thank you for the first two good night's.
- Z2321LPdh (2/5): VEHICLE THEFT FROM HOTEL CAR PARK!! - Overall Hotel Was Fine, Bedroom Clean, Staff Were Nice However Parking Was NOT SECURE, You pay for overnight secure parking (additional to room cost) - My vehicle was stolen from this car park within 1hr 20mins of parking..Unfortunately the security / carpark barrier was not down as it has apparently been out of action for numerous months……
- NigelinCheshire (4/5): Disappointing - The hotel is typical Premier Inn with Ok rooms and good beds but to be charged almost £250 per night plus parking which the receptionist didn’t even mention, is just a rip off.
Breakfast at £10.99 in the adjacent Beefeater was very good as were the cheerful staff at breakfast.
- WorkstreamManager (4/5): Poor customer service and lack of apologies - Previous experience at this Premier Inn was very good but not this time. The room access cards failed three times and no apology was made. Also the staff were very slow in responding when the bell was rung at the reception desk. Really unhappy that we were not able to have a table by the breakfast bar which is a necessity for a person of limited mobility. One excuse was that we turned-up less than half an hour before the breakfast closed, the other that all the tables were taken, when we saw one was vacant throughout our breakfast. Once again no apologies were offered - presumably because the staff members didn't believe it was their fault or they were only obeying orders of management.
- D8036GFpaulm (2/5): Fine for parking - Stopped to try and get something to eat , but was in between times , only to find out I'm now fined 100 quid for try to give them service and my money , rang the desk only to be told there is 12 signs outside and a clock in as you walk in , so for an 11 minute visit it's cost me this , so much for guest relationships, joke
- P5590LWmaried (10/5): Best stay - Always stay here excellent staff especially Tammi happy friendly always accomdating clean great location food is great
- HG1970 (10/5): Ideal city centre hotel - The hotel location is ideal for our needs, the hotel was clean and well presented. The Room was very good with everything needed to ensure we enjoyed our stay. Staff throughout were excellent, courteous and helpful. Plenty of choices for breakfast which was all well cooked. Big shout out to the Bar+Block restaurant, we ate in there on the Friday night of our stay and the food was fantastic as were the staff who served us. Will definitely use again and recommend
- debbiet173 (10/5): Great Location for Newcastle city center - Great location with easy access to Eldon Square, The Light Center etc. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Though based in the city center the noise levels are acceptable. Staff are helpful and friendly.
- johnsL3987GF (10/5): Great Experience! - The person on reception, Nikki, was really welcoming and very helpful. Plus she was great to deal with.
The facilities at the hotel were really good, and great value
- georgiamelodieh (2/5): Smelly room with dirty facilities and poor ventilation - I was so disappointed with this stay at Premier Inn at The Gate Newcastle. At soon as I opened the hotel room door for room 245 a wall of sour musty smell hit me. On top of that, the hand wash bottle in the bathroom was disgusting, covered in some bizarre sort of gunk (see photo). The windows also don't open with a supposed ventilation system which might have even been the source of the horrid smell. I stay at Travelodges often for work and thought a premier inn would be slightly more comfortable, and instead it was one of the worst hotel stays I've never had. If I wasn't busy attending a conference I would have requested changing room, but the three night stay felt like a complete rip-off given what was provided. I recommend staying elsewhere and definitely avoiding room 245.
- Nataliya (8/5): Nice, motel style place to stay - The rating was given for two star hotel. This is a motel style, very, very simple. Service was good, the room was relatively clean. We stayed only one night, so we just needed a place where we could sleep. It was a good place to stay for the money paid.
- sophiepY4600YM (10/5): Recommend to stay. - Really lovely stay. All the staff are really accommodating. Felt right at home, nice as a solo traveled. Dinner was great and again breakfast was amazing really nice selection.
- mariamL3880ID (10/5): Relax stay - What a lovely stay !
We booked here and everything was so perfect from the moment we checked in until dinner and breakfast service. The room was big and cleaned with everything you need.
- traceylashdown (4/5): Check in is a nightmare! Stay somewhere else - This hotel is a great location for ease to the racecourse. The thing that lets this hotel down is the management, literally no one to be found on arrival, we had to walk in to the restaurant to find a member of staff whom was really friendly. He then went and located a surly looking lady who came out of an office to be incredibly unhelpful, returning quickly back to her office obviously in an attempt to avoid any further conversations with guests!
Never been to a premier inn like it, normally the checking in team (even at busy hotels like Gatwick) are really pleasant and accommodating. It’s not the first time we have had a poor check in experience at this hotel. I even attempted to get said woman back out of the office by pressing the help bell which she duly ignored.
Such a shame as some of the other staff in this hotel can’t do enough for you, there is clearly a lack of management that allows others to give such poor service.
- Coastersandthrills (10/5): Happy with our stay - Great hotel and location. A standard Premier inn, you get what you expect from a Premier inn. Clean hotel with friendly staff, comfortable beds and a great night's sleep.
- ianandtrinam (8/5): Breakfast - We were walk ins during breakfast, staff were accommodating and friendly. The breakfast itself was good, the hot breakfast was empty, on 1st arrival but it was soon refilled. Main issue for us was the £3 flat rate for parking considering the are promting kids eat for free to bring in the customers and we were only doing the breakfast.
