Guest Reviews
- 418timc (10/5): Quality - again - Premier Inn is always a quality experience. This one is perfectly placed to visit family. After a 6/7 hour drive a room with an assured night’s sleep is very welcome. The shower was outstanding - spacious, easy controls and up to heat immediately.
- angelakirkbride02018 (10/5): Great value/location/staff - Value for money & exceptional staff.
Great location.
In process of renovation but no disturbance caused during our stay.
- debrafarrar (10/5): One of the best premier inns - Lovely, super friendly staff, both in reception and the breakfast room. excellent value for money, everything you could possibly want or need. Room was spotless, breakfast absolutely fantastic, cooked to perfection by a lovely friendly lady. Reception staff were so helpful, letting us know nice places to visit.
Will definitely be staying again and would recommend to all.
- waynehP7395GD (4/5): Newcastle. Quayside - I stayed here last weekend. Hotel is dated could do with a good refurb, I don't know the last time the windows were cleaned they were very dirty indeed. I stayed on the 1st floor above the Slug and lettuce which was quite noisy on the Saturday night. Breakfast was amazing
- AKC949 (2/5): Do not accept room 405 - The hotel itself is a good location, although inside is a bit old and creaky.
I was allocated room 405 with my partner. On arrival we heard an extremely loud noise coming from a door opposite our room which was marked private. It sounded like a laundry room, so we assumed the noise would stop during the rest of our stay. We quickly got changed after check in, and left the hotel at 15.30. We spend the night in Newcastle at City Hall, and had food and drinks. We returned to the hotel around midnight to hear the noise was still ongoing from the room. The only person in reception was security. My partner and I attempted to drown out the noise and attempted to sleep. Unfortunately, as the night went on, the noise was so obvious and unbearable. It completely affected our sleep. As it got later and later it became pointless even attempting to request a room change, which didn't seem possible anyway due to only security being in the reception area.
This experience ruined my partners birthday, and room 405 should be put out of use if the private room continues to be used.
- 155edwinaw (10/5): Welcoming and friendly - Staff at this Premier Inn were so helpful and friendly. We had booked an early check-in and requested a ground floor room near to reception. B9th requests were met.
Bridget on reception was very welcoming and despite a very short window to get our room ready, everything was clean, neat and comfortable.
Food at the Blue Cap was excellent too!
- O6871GDjulieb (10/5): Steeped in culture and character with really nice old building features combined with keen and attentive staff. - Premier inn at Newcastle Quayside. Lovely refurbished room. Clean and comfortable with a lovely view of the river and the glass house ( formerly the sage ) . There were new cocktails to try and eager and attentive staff. Nothing was too much trouble at breakfast and food was cooked to order perfectly.
I came back to the hotel bar for drinks after my concert and the building may be old but it’s so full of character with lots of the old features of the building still in place . More atmosphere than some of the newer build premier inns I have stayed in down south. Over all I loved my 1 night stay and can’t wait to do it again.
- gillottfamily (10/5): Premier Inn Newcastle - I looked at the reviews but knew it was being updated. We were given a newly updated room with river view then our shower broke. So responsive and quickly moved us to another updated room with a river view which had an even better view.
We did the breakfast and updated to evening meal deal.Food was good and good selection.
The venue of the Hotel was amazing just by the Tyne fantastic walk out along the bridges.
The staff were amazing, it was an extremely busy hotel all three nights with business groups, workers and travellers.
They just worked so hard to presentation professional service even when you could see their capacity was stretched at times.
Would recommend this Priemer Inn highly.
- B2212UKjohnb (10/5): Positive - Kind and helpful staff, particularly Mary.
Premier inn facility is ready for a face lift, but is very clean throughout.
- 511janetteb (10/5): Great location, good rooms, great staff and value for money - Great location, over looking the river, staff are very friendly, accomading and welcoming, the room have just have a make over, it was very clean and spacious, and it was great value for money, there was a happy hour on in the bar, with 2 cocktails for £12, very good value for money, we had a great night, the breakfast was also good and a great price making it a great stay
- S4177GDpaulw (2/5): Great Location very dated Bedrooms - We stayed with Friends last weekend 15th November. First time in Newcastle had a great time and hotel is situated in a great location for getting about etc and there is some really nice bars and restaurants at the Quay side. However the Bedroom 124 was the worst Premier Inn bedroom I have ever stopped in and I have stopped in a lot. It was like something from the 90's!!
Very old tired decor and furniture, bathroom mouldy and old shower curtain on a runner that don't run and a shower that just spits water. I have paid a lot less than £150 and had a much better room.
- 444geoffl (4/5): Been to many Premier Inns but this'takes the biscuit'! - My son booked the room for him and I : him for one night and me for two nights. I tripped up the steps going in (insufficient lighting) and injured my knee. The reception looked as though it could do with a refurb. The room was twin-bedded and very small, which meant having to go sideways along the wall to get into one bed. The television did not work. Going down to reception to report this, the manager arrived after 30 minutes but couldn't repair it and explained he'd have to report it to the mechanic the next day. There was a mix-up around room service as we staying different nights - all towels were unusable. The same manager from the previous night reluctantly gave me towels. I asked if the television had been repaired. He said he didn't know. I asked how he didn't know. Had the mechanic been informed. The reply I got was "You will not believe the day I've had since I've come on. I've been very busy!" I told him that wasn't what I asked him. He turned around and left me there. Rude!
We went to attend a family funeral, bad enough, but the experience at this 'tatty' hotel and rude staff, didn't make for a pleasant experience.
- maxbL5218QG (2/5): Terrible! - We booked the hotel a good while before hand. A week before our arrival we received an email saying there was building work, so may be some noise. When we arrived there was a sign at reception to say the water will be off from 12noon!! The receptionist said this would only be for 15 minutes at 12noon. In the morning at about 11:15am the water was off. No shower, no toilet flush. Disgusting and unacceptable.
- 675athenaa (6/5): Good hotel for a business trip - Pretty nice hotel, cleanliness could have been better but great breakfast and friendly staff. Water turned off for the afternoon which I was not pre-warned about.
- 5donnao (8/5): Enjoyable stay - After reading awful reviews I was worried but...our room was lovely recently refurbished & clean...had breakfast & evening meal both spot on. The staff were really friendly. Excellent location.
- sheilalS8123SQ (10/5): Always a friendly welcome from Mary - We have stayed at this Premier Inn regularly for the last 11 years because we have family living nearby. We stay there several times a year and always get a friendly welcome from Mary on reception.
The rooms are always clean with comfortable beds. Some of the showers have been upgraded which is very welcome, but the hotel does need a general refresh.
- declanmB1032XZ (10/5): Stay - Brilliant room really clean staff were all very nice and helpful. Would recommend and stay again. Friendly and kind throughout our stay.
- TrevorHall (10/5): Excellent Stay - I stayed two nights, waiting for a hospital procedure. I had an excellent night’s sleep in 129 as it looks onto the quiet car park at the back. Everything was as you’d expect, cleanliness, all facilities, hot shower.
For my evening meal I took the 17 minute walk across the roundabout to Sambuca Braise Station, which serves beautiful pizza, pasta, steak. So don’t let the pub being closed out you off staying here because the good at SBS is superb.
- seifa357 (10/5): My premier inn experience - Upon arrival I met the receptionist Mary who was very nice and welcoming. She was an absolute star! I do recommend the rooms to be refurbished.
- Navigate18069931479 (4/5): Not recommended - This hotel was not at all premier inns usual standards it was dirty and dated. Our room was clean but had a heater in that started banging at 5am and woke me up with a start it then kept banging for the rest of the night making it very difficult to sleep. The bar seats were falling apart and thread bear and the bar toilets were disgusting. This morning I went to open the fire door that led to the lift and it wouldn’t open. I therefore pushed it harder and the closing mechanism snapped off hitting my husband on the shoulder. It was no more than a 2 star hotel. I understand it’s an old building and needs work but that is no excuse for being so dirty and so run down the prices however do not reflect the standard of the hotel. I would have complained at checkout but there were no staff on reception!!! Next time I’ll book the travelodge up the road it looked far superior!!!
- Curious03700910190 (2/5): Disgusted - We booked this hotel and on arrival were allocated a very small room which had no resemblance to the pictures shown on the website for this hotel. The bathroom was very dated and worn, the carpet was worn, we couldn't see out the window as it was so dirty, there were no glasses in the room, and in general the room was not fit for purpose. The wardrobe only had 3 hangers and the remote control for the TV was faulty. The main staircase to the rooms was very dirty and the corridors were not much better. The hotel gave the impression of a very run down, low budget building. We asked if any other rooms were available but were told the hotel was fully booked.
We checked out one hour later and moved to another hotel.
After complaining to guest relations team, we were basically told we were made aware of the refurbishment in advance and given a token £35 refund. Premier Inns were always our go to hotel but I am so disgusted with their service that I will never book a Premier Inn again.
- R3675MKcarlb (8/5): October at the Premier Blue Cap - Had a lovely time and the staff were very helpful 😊. It's really nice having the Blue cap next door for food and drinks at the end of the day. Also staff in the pub were very nice. Thanks to Bridget for recommending places to see and pleasantries.
- Kevmitch1 (2/5): Not usual Premier inn standard - The hotel itself is the filthiest premier inn we have ever stayed in. Can always bank on the Premier inn having good rooms, focus on cleanliness and comfortable beds, this was not the case in this hotel. The building itself has a sign saying it’s under some sort of upgrade but our room was way below expectations. We had hair in the bath, lipstick marks on the wall and just a generally unclean looking room. All the walls were dirty in the bedroom and bathroom and the corridors are the same. We were only the hotel for one evening on our way further south but I will not use this hotel again.
- 917clarer (10/5): Premier Inn stay was very good as always - Room was clean, spacious and a very quiet spot. Good for getting into Newcastle city centre. Staff were very friendly and reception is staffed 24/7 which is reassuring when travelling alone.
- 527kerries (2/5): Massive investment needed. Poor. - Grim. The staff are the only redeeming feature unfortunately.
Location
- Quayside, across from the river Tyne and at the side of the Tyne bridge.
Roadside, lots of outside noise.
Rooms -
Tired, dated, scruffy. I honestly felt unclean in mine. Second floor, 236. The carpet was ick. Bedding looked clean. The room had that unwashed stale smell about it, I didn't walk barefoot on the carpet, I darent. The windows are filthy, skirting boards unkempt and window frames are old, chipped and in dire need of updating. No double glazing so the room loses heat fast, and outside noise is constant. A wall heater is supplied as the central heating monitor is broken. The bathroom was clean enough and clean towels, but its like putting an elastoplast over a bullet wound. A rubbish night's sleep due to the noise outside from traffic, drunks and constant police sirens.
Hallways - again, tired, dated, worn carpets, stale smell.
Restaurant - usual premier inn set up, plentiful but unremarkable.
Staff - the only redeeming feature. Friendly, welcoming but fighting a losing battle at this site.
In general, this premier inn needs a massive overhaul. Its clearly seen better days, needs massive updating measures, a thorough deep clean and renovation. For a central position the prices are disgusting and do not reflect the standard that most premier inns deliver. Shame on you as a corporation Premier Inn. Invest, invest, and invest urgently.
£170 for 2 nights midweek is daylight robbery. You should be strictly audited here. That may prompt you to bring the building, the interiors, and standards up to date and in line with value for hard earned money!
- grahambB2225TV (8/5): Undergoing much needed upgrade. - Well located. Chargeable parking available. The hotels is currently undergoing an upgrade and it needs it. The room we stayed in was well below what I have come to expect from Premier Inn.
- 492libbyg (2/5): Stay away - Premier inn are always my first choice. But this venue will definitely be my last choice. Awful experience. Was firstly double charged. 5 days later nobody apparently knows what's happening with my refund. Weekend had to be cut short because our spending money was taken out our account. So explaining that to 2 autistic children wasnt fun.
Room was dated. Bathroom had mould all over the bath. Floor the same obviously had been flooded on more than one occasion , lino bubbled and bits falling off the bath panels. Accessibility isnt the best either. My son in a wheelchair had to access the lift alone.
Staff didn't seem bothered. The kindest person I spoke to was a Scottish workman.
Dont rush here. And pay by cash if you do.
- timnB488WV (10/5): Very good. We had 3 rooms over 2 night and everyone is very happy. - Arrived at check in stressed tired and hungry. We were lucky enough to get checked in by Sara. She was brilliant and went way over and beyond to help us out. Warm friendly and professional. She made sure we got a table booked in busy restaurant, before it was fully booked out. When our room key could not open the room door She found us a different room no problem. 5 star treatment and a great team player.
- Fearless25845550890 (2/5): DO NOT STAY HERE! - I was mortified. I recently stayed in a premier inn in edinburgh which was great.
This location however was disgusting.
How can the standards be allowed to differ so much??
The cleaners all need their eyes testing.
What a vile room!
See the pictures!
We got a 50% refund which is still a joke.
Even at breakfast, the cushions on the chairs were falling apart.
CEO of premier inn, I beg you to invest in a revamp of this site. It is horrendous!
An embarrassment to your brand.
- 693darrang (4/5): Not the best - Check out time was 12 o’clock so we put the do not disturb sign on the door so housekeeping would be aware we were sleeping in. Unfortunately the housekeeping were banging about and shouting to one another. We even heard them say they couldn’t finish early until they had done our room, and someone kicked our door. As I went to take our bags to the car the receptionist asked me what number my room was when I told her she replied oh we was wondering where the key was?. If the checkout time is 12 o’clock the staff should abide to this time. Very unprofessional. Imagine booking a hotel room to relax then being forced out early the next day. Waste of money!
- 95shellw (2/5): SHOULD NOT BE OPEN - Checked in Friday 3rd, room dirty, shower has no hot water, slightly warmer out of sink, asked to be moved and was even worse, how they can justify allowing people to stay here is a joke, legal action being taken for the £81 they had the cheek to charge me, unfortunately due to late time and restricted time I didn't have time to find somewhere else
- ccedinburgh2018 (4/5): Awful customer service - Quite disappointing
Saved from a one star review by the clean, comfy rooms and decent food at our evening meal at the on site restaurant
Customer service overall was very disappointing both at hotel reception and restaurant
Had to ring bell on arrival, even though I was in eyeshot of the female receptionist, who then appeared disgruntled, proceeded to sit down at computer with little eye contact/ communication or explanation about facilities and one word answers to questions asked
Same with the gentleman on departure, who just took back keys, didn't check how stay was etc
Restaurant staff were not very welcoming and slow to show us to our seats
Missed breakfast as it was so slow to arrive
Absolutely awful service, would not recommend
- francescasH8183OR (6/5): poor breakfast as nothing available - Do not have the breakfast as it was nothing more than a bun fight. Half the food was not available and I was virtually sitting on the lady next to me. No booking system so everyone arrived at the same time. It was awful and stressful. Definitely not worth the money
- 739trudieg (8/5): Quayside stay , a steep walking into centre. - It was a convenient place for a night in the city at an event. We know the city well, so it wasn't too difficult to navigate from hotel to where we wanted to be.
quite away from some of the more popular bars and restaurants and there's a very steep path into the main entertainment and shopping areas so probably not good if you have mobility issues. However, if you're wanting to be on the quayside for events, or don't mind a bit of steep walking it's ideal.
The Quayside market on Sundays is on the doorstep
The hotel itself is undergoing upgrades which didn't affect our stay but are probably timely.
The room is exactly what you'd expect. Not luxurious but functional with a very comfy bed.
We did have breakfast ,which is really very good value for money and very tasty.
- Jan5660 (10/5): Premier Inn - Friendly welcome and room as you expect from a Premier Inn. The breakfast was very good and the staff once again very friendly. Would happily stay here again.
- Cnocreamha7 (10/5): Ideal spot with great staff - We booked 2 nights at this hotel for the Great North Run. The location is perfect, a 10 minute walk to the metro station so no need to take your car into Newcastle.
The staff had went above and beyond for the guests who were running, lovely motivational posters all over the place and a great wee snack area that you could just help yourself.
Sharon and her team were outstanding throughout our stay, always a warm greeting and nothing was too much trouble.
The hotel itself was very clean and its you could see the staff took pride it their work.
This is a perfect base for visiting Newcastle. Thank you to all at Premier Inn Holystone for making our weekend memorable.
- russellj903 (10/5): Excellent service 5 stars - Came premier inn Sandiway lady on desk called Mary was very accommodating And made booking for us 2 rooms as we seem to have no booking
- davidnJ1239SX (4/5): Not great. - We knew the restaurant was being refurbished so accepted breakfast would be a limited selection and complementary but it was really poor, not helped by the off-hand staff attitude. By 7.15, a key part of the limited supply had gone when barely any premier inn breakfasts normally even open before 7.30 on a Sunday! Staff just didn't put any effort in to do the best for their guests. This is a site well out of town so certainly no local corner shops and cafes.
Bathroom damp and smelly as well. The hotel is showing its age.
- Tacksterino (6/5): Fine in the past, can't cope with the summer heat - I've been before and it's been fine for the area. However, this time the weather was hot and there is no air conditioning in any of the rooms. The windows are limited to a couple of inches of opening and the staff supplied electric fans that don't do much when all they do is move the heat around. With summers getting hotter, AC is a must
- Alleyb69 (10/5): Great stay - Had a relaxing, quiet stay and the staff were friendly and very helpful. The room was clean and the beds were very comfortable? It was a very hot day and the staff made sure we had plenty of cold water
- PhilipM45 (8/5): Good stay - Very friendly staff, good rooms which are very clean.
Breakfast is cooked to order and table service which was very good. Only downside is lack of phone/WiFi in the area.
- brianeF3283QR (6/5): If nt for Family funeral this place would never have been chosen - Food area closed food provided outside agency and they where changing hands. A4 list provided to show what they did not have. Maybe add chef to that list as everything served below luke warm.
- chrisbN3399LL (8/5): A Good Place to Stay and Eat - I stay here often and both the Premier Inn and the Blue Cap next door are just great. Mary at the Premier Inn is very welcoming, there's plenty of parking (with 4x electric charge points) and there is good running or walking down the nearby Whitegate Way path.
- Bluegecko33 (4/5): After a few years staying away...it's not improved. - The whole of Premier Inn Sandiway is over due a complete overhaul and refurbishment. It is tired. I stayed there a few years back, preferring to stay at the other Premier Inn in Northwich - the one with the Woodpecker pub attached, near Davenham roundabout. This time I stayed at Sandiway to see if it had been improved - it hadn't.
On entering the room there was a smell - a mix of mouldy, damp, mustiness with a hint of bleach/cleaner. The source was the bathroom. It was clean, but the smell lingered throughout our stay. It was reminiscent of the smell in old public showers at the gym/swimming pool. Not what I want in a room I am going to sleep in. The edges of things in the bathroom were grubby, the holders and containers of the soap etc were rusty and grubby.
We were constantly disturbed every night by doors closing heavily through into the early morning. You have signs everywhere, but people do not read them, especially if they are coming in after a drink. You have soft close mechanisms on the corridor doors that work and those doors close silently if someone walks through and leaves it to self close. The doors on the rooms also have soft close mechanisms on them, but they DO NOT work and these are the doors that were slamming noisily when people let them bang shut behind them. They need upgrading. I appreciate hotel living is accepting people moving about at all hours. I've stayed in enough over the years to know that, but when you pride yourself about good sleep and not being disturbed etc...
And while I am filling this in - what is with the sign on the bathroom door saying it must be closed when taking a shower due to steam setting off the fire alarm. If this is the case then presumably the fire alarm is low tech as I've not had this sign on any other Premier Inn bathroom door or the internal fan in the bathroom is inadequate to deal with the steam produced by the shower. As I said in my opinion Sandiway is in need of upgrading and refurbishment.
Keys and a wobbly Yale lock style of lock on the room door - this is dark ages. Where are the key cards and more sophisticated style of door locks in all the other Premier Inns I have stayed at.
Premier Inn Sandiway is not a patch on your other Premier Inns that I have stayed in, both in Cheshire and other parts of the UK.
- Safari29585928361 (6/5): No air conditioning, rooms really hot - The staff were really friendly and helpful and the room was nice.
The big let down for us was there being no air conditioning in the room, the temperature was so hot we had 2 fans on all the time we were in the room. As we were ground floor the window only opened slightly and didn't make any difference. During the day we kept the blackout curtains closed to keep out the sun and heat but again this made no difference. The corridors were nice and cool but when you walked into our room it was like stepping off a plane abroad, the heat hit you.
The breakfast is great and really good value. I would strongly advise against the evening meal, the food is poor and very overpriced even when paying as a meal deal, definitely eat elsewhere.
- Leander_12 (8/5): Tired Rooms but Clean with Friendly Staff - Rooms were very tired and in need of refurbishment, but they were clean so that was the main thing. Reception staff and staff at pub next door were very helpful and friendly. We stayed for the weekend for a Wedding at a nearby venue, so this hotel was ideal for our needs.
- Victy_Jones (10/5): Fantastic staff! - Perfect hotel for our needs, a great location for the wedding at Delamere. Staff were welcoming and helpful, particularly Bridget on Reception who was really friendly and accommodating; an excellent front of house who went above and beyond!
- 532Deanb (10/5): A good visit - An excellent Premier Inn, clean, comfortable rooms, good strong shower, clean and maintained public areas and helpful reception team. Special shout out to Tyler on reception for being extra helpful and friendly. Would recommend. Hopefully I will be back in the future.
- robinhJ7150TW (8/5): Very relaxing stay, friendly helpful staff - Friendly helpful staff, good sized room, clean, good pub directly next door, plenty of secure parking and a couple of electric charging points on site
- paulcI3005LR (10/5): Great everything, just as expected and no compaints - staff, food, parking & location suits us so well, always get the room we want when booking as got 2 kids under 2 they provide 2 cots and everything we need. great restaraunt and parking and quiet location. 8th time we think so far with many more planned visits to come.
- sharongT2139PN (10/5): The lovely staff made our visit so enjoyable. - The staff were fantastic! So helpful, friendly and fun. We happened to mention that we were visiting family as it was my husband and his twin Sister’s 70th birthday. When we got back to our room later that night there was a card and box of chocolates waiting for my husband! What a lovely, thoughtful thing to do!
We had a lovely room that suited us nicely.
The reception staff that we met were Pauline ( what a lovely lady) Elliot and an another young man whose name escapes me - sorry but they were all fantastic! Thank you so much!
- neilcA8116OL (10/5): Good all round experience - Was a good all round experience and excellent pub next door, everyone knew there job and everything went smoothly, room was comfy and great value for money.
- Sightseer55812458443 (10/5): Holystone - Great stay excellent friendly staff used the dinner breakfast was really good value.comfy quiet room good dining facilities
- 568dolores (8/5): Delicious food - overall my stay was good. The bed was very comfortable. The food was delicious and staff were friendly and helpful. Great value for money.
- CharC1697 (8/5): Good but not good for hot days! - Good standard premier inn experience, comfy and clean, lovely reception staff but unfortunately we stayed on one of the hottest days of the year and the room had no air conditioning and due to the window barely opening, it was roasting and we did not sleep well - it reached 30 degrees on the thermostat and only increased overnight, even with the mechanical fan on.
- N9469SDstuarth (10/5): Fantastic staff - Fantastic stay staff were so welcoming and friendly they genuinely do make it a lovely stay won't hesitate to use again in future
- RickEirew (8/5): Great location, staff and value, badly let down by the restaurant. - Positives - Lovely staff, nice clean rooms, comfy bed, a lovely beer garden, lots of free parking and close to Whitley Bay without being nearly as expensive.
Negatives - Food at the restaurant was really really poor, cooked in very old oil and neither well presented nor enjoyable. We mentioned this on leaving and they just said they'd mention it to the kitchen staff. Bedroom would have benefitted from aircon or a fan, heater on bedroom wall seemed dirty and rusty. .
- K811PLdavidc (4/5): Give it a miss - Very dated old premier inn not worth the £125 a night, staff were great, quite possibly the worst breakfast we have had at a premier inn and we have stayed at 100’s, save ya money eat elsewhere awful food, greasy, sausages dry, poached egg rock hard, ps no coffee machine either, children had pancakes about all possible to eat.
- gillie222 (10/5): A budget hotel with 5 star staff. - The staff at Sandiway went over and above to make sure that my stay was the best it could be right from checking me in.
Sarah, Gwyneth and Mary who were on the reception were amazing in every way.
The room was clean, tidy and adequate for my three night stay and the staff reminded me that I could renew the towels, have the room cleaned if I wanted.
- alexandriae92 (10/5): Thank you Mary at check in! - I had a wonderful stay again at Premier Inn, thanks to the incredibly friendly receptionist. From the moment I walked in, Mary always greets me with a warm smile and makes check-in a breeze.
Their helpful attitude and genuine kindness made me feel truly welcome. It’s always lovely to be greeted by someone who clearly enjoys their job. A fantastic first impression that set the tone for a great stay!
