Guest Reviews
- Gary (8/5): Great stay - For the price, could not complain about anything. Nice reception staff, super comfortable bed, would definitely stay here again. 👍
- GEORGE (10/5): - All good
- Michael (8/5): Worth the price - Front desk staff very attentive and pleasant, room was value for money, clean room and bathroom, loverly soft bed, I had a great nights sleep, radiator had seen better days. Safe and secure
- Jennifer (6/5): - central location.
- Fay (4/5): - The hotel is shabby, unkempt. The rooms very very basic, no heating in my room but the gentleman on the desk was very good ; immediately got a heater. No breakfast facilities
overall I think owners just want to run it into the ground and sell the beautiful building.
Will not stay again.
- Nigel (10/5): - Clean room staff friendly
- Richard (2/5): Dirty, tired , smelt. Avoid - Felt unsafe, dirty and hotel nothing like the photos on hotel sites or website. Arrived at reception and staff was having an argument with a man trying to get access to a bedroom that he was quoting the Housing Association was paying £600 a month for. The reception staff eventually helped us as a women lay on the floor a few metres away charging her phone with her belongs spread on the floor. We paid for the room and then was given a key and note. As we walked up the stairs the smell was rough. On floor 1 doors to the toilets were tapped over to stop people using them. In the room 104 we only stood for minutes, the room smelt terribly, there was food remnants on the carpet and, wooden furniture was all damaged, the headboard worn out, lampshades hanging off and dirty cups and spoons. I then read the note that reception provided to us that stated the hotel ‘does not take responsibility for any loss or theft of items unless left in reception and that all room keys had to be left at reception if guests left the hotel’. So effectively, stuff not safe in locked rooms! We went to reception to request a refund. The cleaner was there & told us that she had cleaned it. reception staff kept smiling and laughing at us when we asked for a refund when we stated that the photos were not the state of the hotel now and this is misleading. The 1st photo on hotels.com is 500m away from the hotel. We were offered another room, but no chance of staying in this ‘hotel’ if that is what it is
- Sarah (10/5): Short break - Clean room, felt safe there as a lone female traveller, pleasant staff. Plenty of places nearby for breakfast. Central location.
- Alison (8/5): Great central location - The swan hotel is in a great location, in the centre of Halifax. Opposite is a great curry house. There is street parking for dropping off bags but otherwise you need to park in amultistory carpark a short walk away which isn't cheap . Think we paid about £12 overnight .
- Stacey (10/5): - Good location, clean tidy bit old world but did trick
- martyn (10/5): - Love these older style hotels. There has clearly been recent refurbishment and the reception and staircase look great and in keeping with su a property. The standard room we stayed in was basic and if older style but very clean. Everything worked as expected and we had a great sleep.
As there is no on site restaurant the foyer and downstairs area lack a bit of ambience and I would suggest some music be played to make it a bit more welcoming
Location on quiet street in centre of town only a 5 minute walk to train and bus station
Overall great place and value at this price point.
- Ian (6/5): Old and very dated but comfortable - Very old fashioned hotel was obviously a very old building. Bed was comfy, tea and coffee supplied with plenty of milk and sugar. Main street it is on is noisy with a McDonald's virtually opposite so noisy till late. Here is a dilemma, the parking outside is pay and display, between 8am and 8pm £2 an hour with a maximum stay of an hour and no return for another hour. I arrived at 6.15pm so how am I going to adhere to these rules? Not the hotels fault but it meant I had to be up and out before 8am. The bathroom taps come off in your hand, and no plug on the side of the room the bed is on so charging your phone overnight is a long distance event. I was on the 2nd floor also which was very strenuous on my little old legs. So a comfortable stay but not great.
- Dean (6/5): - Bedding was brand new and very comfortable room was small but served it’s purpose close to venue, however window only opened 3 inch and no fan or air conditioning very hot and sleepless night but all in all ok
- Catherine (6/5): - Basic dated accommodation. No restaurant, therefore no breakfast. We had a midweek stay at a special price, wouldn't have paid the website price. Central for the Piece Hall venue.
- Jonathan (10/5): - Great Hotel close to the Piece Hall and Halifax town centre
- Adrian (6/5): No frills low price. Just ok - Very basic overnight stay. Rooms very basic but reflected in price. Overall pretty clean, toilet seat badly stained. Very noisy due to late night/early morning revellers. Check in was a grunt from reception and a card reader. Don’t expect frills. Great location though for Piece Hall
- Jacqueline (8/5): - Nothing to fault with the hotel but the noise outside our room in the early hours woke me up . It sounded like a bin lorry at first but went on for so long thst I think it was a generator or something . Room 204 😩
- Rob (4/5): unsatisfied - Dated hotel with hostel feel to the building. Bed very uncomfortable, bathroom extremely basic and shower of poor quallity and difficult to get good temperature. would not re book.
- Moira (4/5): - Old and tired hotel, dresser in room falling to pieces, no hot water at 11pm, dirty mugs, dirty bathroom floor, awoke at 5am with macdonalds delivery van being unloaded opposite Perfect location but needs updated and breakfast would be nice
- T (6/5): Concert - Wasn't expecting great things due to some reviews.
Positives, Very large room (2 turned into 1). I found the bed comfy my husband didn't. Clean enough. Staff nice.
Cons, very dated bathroom, very very noisy. The room overlooked McDonalds which had a massive delivery at 5.30 am. This lasted over 45 mins. Then lots of noise from the street. Hotel must be aware of this so maybe don't room guests there on the delivery day. The hotel needs more work to update it.
- Tracey (10/5): Great place - Great location lovely hotel super friendly hotel staff what’s not to love even the price was very reasonable
- J A (8/5): - Good clean basic hotel room. Comfy bed & nice clean white bedding. Nice quiet room. Hotel is tired & outdated in furnishings & decor but the room was spotless. Yea & coffee making facilities in the room. Ideal for a basic hotel room
- Joanna (6/5): - Easy access to the main shopping and eating premises.
I used to stay here many years ago, now find the Swan has come down in the standards. The rooms are usable but need upgrading. My shower over the bath is outdated, now preferably a shower cubicle. The shower itself was not safe, the hot tap when turned came completely off, and I had to use the shower head by hand, also no bathmat or handle aid getting out.
As to the decor, outdated and tired, and the room was just about clean, especially the carpet needed care or replacing.
So this was my opinion and do not know about the other rooms, mine was 201.
- Miss Jane (10/5): - The staff were very friendly thankyou. It is a great place to stay for the piece hall, train station and other places of interest in Halifax. My room was spacious. It was a little bit noisy at night ,but not enough to keep me awake.Only comment,a hairdryer would of been good in the room.Would go back. Thankyou.
- Rebecca (10/5): - Comfortable stay, great location
- laurence (4/5): - Not what I expected for the price the hotel doesn’t provide food or drinks no hot water
- Dave (6/5): - The hotel is very tired and rooms dated with various problems but couldn’t fault the staff. Reasonably priced and good location for Piece Hall gigs so we could forgive a lot. The lobby was smart.
- Tim (6/5): One night in Halifax - Hotel has a Bedroom a nice size but the carpet was dirty and stained, the windows didn't ventilate the room, the bedding was worn and the bath didn't have a plug !!!
Arrival was average as was the check out where the receptionist struggled to put down her breakfast. There did not appear to be any breakfasts available from the hotel fortunately a number of local run cafes a few streets away.
- Paul (8/5): - A good honest hotel in a great location in the centre of Halifax, with extremely helpful staff. Whilst not as grand as it once was, fantastic value for money. Bedding and towels immaculately laundered, and plenty of tea bags in the room, so you know you’re in Yorkshire!
- Lesley (8/5): - Traditional style hotel right in the centre of Halifax. We paid £8.75 on Just Park app for just over 24 hours parking at the nearby Woolshops shopping centre. Very easy to find car park and Hotel.
The room was basic but very clean. We couldn’t get the terrestrial TV channels to work but we could access Netflix and YouTube/Prime by using our own accounts.
The Italian restaurant next door was amazing.
The only down side was that there was a bit of noise from revellers at pub closing time which is the price you pay for having such a central location.
- David (10/5): - All good
Great locaton
Friendly staff
Beautiful old building
- Samantha (10/5): - Great value for the night after a gig, was clean and comfortable
- Paul (8/5): - Easy access to the centre of town, just right for what we planned on doing whilst we were here .
- Phil (8/5): - Room (200) is fairly basic but clean. Fine for a night. Tv wasn’t working but wasn’t staying long enough to use it. Sink slow to drain and plug doesn’t seal, bath slow to drain and toilet needed a bike revving action to flush. Just needs a competent handyman and more regular function checks by management.
- michael (10/5): - value for the money
- Helen (10/5): - Na
- Catherine (4/5): Terrible, filthy, small, staff useless . - Walls had damp stains, bathroom floor was filthy, bedroom covered in dust. Bed was tiny for a couple wasn’t even a standard double. Tv didn’t work we complained and staff didn’t care. We did inform them we would be leaving a bad review and still didn’t care. Would have left if we hadn’t already paid, it was my birthday night out and tbh a hostel would have been better. I didn’t sleep all night we left asap 7am. Lift also broke on way down and worked only when it wanted which when your on 3rd floor is a nightmare. Wouldn’t recommend. Wouldn’t go back. Disgusted I even paid £60+ for that.
- Mathew (4/5): - The hotel is quite old, which is quite nice, it has character, but they don't do food and it's pretty dirty.
The water coming out of the taps was filthy, so I couldn't shower and am hoping I wont get ill from brushing my teeth!
- David (6/5): Low cost accommodation in centre of town - Ok quality, though no meals or breakfast available. The building has been very grand in the past. The room was very spacious although a bit soulless. Bathroom smelt damp.
- Stephen (6/5): - Ok for a business trip
- Carl (8/5): Good stay - Good location, was clean and good value, no bar or food but worked well for what we needed.
- Sarah (10/5): Nice Stay - This hotel is very underrated, don't listen to any bad reviews, it was very clean and comfortable, staff were very pleasant, theres someone on reception 24/7 so felt safe there as a lone female traveller. No breakfast but macdonalds nearby or plenty of places to eat. Great location, 5 mins from train station, or 2 mins from bus station.
- Gregg (8/5): - Great place to stay if you're on a budget in Halifax. Very helpful and friendly staff.
- Lynda (8/5): - The hotel had only just re-opened that week, having been closed for 8 months for refurbishment ... in fact when i went online to confirm the time of my arrival, having booked with Expedia, I was somewhat worried to find that it said the hotel was closed! Fortunately it wasn't when I got there, but since there was no wifi, as it had been closed for so long, they hadn't been able to update the website. So please don't worry, it IS open, and the new nice friendly staff are doing everything in their power to get it up and running again up to its old standards. We were disappointed to find that, having booked and paid for a continental breskfast throuigh Expedia, that there was actually none available as yet at the hotel, but the manager arranged for us to have whatever we wanted at a local cafe in one of the lovely arcades, so again, they really are doing their best. Once the new owners have got the last few bits and pieces together, I'm sure it will be an excellent option to stay at when in Halifax, and we would be happy to stay there again. Thank you for a most pleasant stay.
- Kenneth (8/5): - The staff were brilliant and nothing was too much trouble.
- Leigh (8/5): Good Stay - Quick check-in, nice room, no noise, good night’s sleep, quick check-out.
