Guest Reviews
- Roland (8/5): - Rooms was clean just needed a fridge and microwave
- Jacob (8/5): - The roon was clean for the most part. We cpuldnt open the door to the bathroom all the way becauze it hit the toilet. Also, the door locking mechanism was broke and the door had to be forced open and shut. Otherwise amazing!
- Taylor (4/5): - I like that it was affordable and the staff was very friendly and easy to work with. The parking was very easy. The location was perfect for shopping and close to cedar point. The only thing I think could use fixing would be the cleanliness, it's a little outdated but other than that it's an okay hotel.
- Jeff (8/5): - Okay
- Jeanette (8/5): - This is our go to hotel when we stay in Sandusky. Overall we enjoy staying here but this past time we had problems with all of the smokers around the building both by the entrances and then outside of our ‘nonsmoking’ room. Every time we go there is always someone sitting under the Porte-cochère smoking and you have to walk through their second hand smoke to get to the office. Then we were relaxing in our room and all of the sudden we hear someone outside of our room hacking up a lung and our room filled up with cigarette smoke. My husband is asthmatic, and he could barely even breathe. By the time we went out to say something they were gone, so I moved to the cigarette ashtray down the way. And we opened up the door to air it out. About 20 minutes later it was a different guy out there smoking in our room began to fill with smoke again. We went out and asked him to move down and he did. Then this morning we went out again and there was a different guy out smoking. We checked out and walked outside, and the area out under the Porte-cochère and again it was filled with smoke.
Please, please, please create a smoking area away from the building and encourage your guests to comply.
- Michelle (10/5): - The hotel and rooms are definitely outdated, and yet a blast from the past, however for the price and size of our room, can’t beat it! Great service too!
- Richard (10/5): - Close to cedar point. Friendly staff. It’s not a five star hotel but it’s fine for the price.
- Jennifer (10/5): - Nice stay on a budget
- Kathy (2/5): - The parking didn't look safe and everything was dirty and not clean especially the beds all around was scared to even sleep on them. The showers and toilets were dirty was scared to use that. The pictures are very deceiving. Nothing worked either. The door locks were crooked and looked like those house locks that you enter a code on. It was hot and humid. Spiders everywhere.
- Ashley (10/5): - Will be back
- Mikhail (10/5): - Renovation in progress, friendly staff, short drive to Cedar Point Sports Center avoiding railroad crossing. There was no fridge in the room, but staff brought one for us. Kids enjoyed large outdoor pool.
- Amber (10/5): - Thank you
- Michelle (8/5): - We booked a room at the very last minute and it was well worth the $80. Yes it’s an old hotel but it was clean, service was friendly and we were happy with our stay.
- Stacey (6/5): - There
- Katelyn (10/5): - Very nice and clean. A little outdated but super nice
- Candice (10/5): - I like it here staff is friendly and accommodating room is quiet and comfortable checkin was fast and easy
- Bryan (4/5): - This property was pieced together with broken things. I asked the very nice clerk and they said not to worry about it that they knew the towel rack and hairdryer were ripped out of the wall. Will not stay here again
- JOSEPH (10/5): - The manager at the desk was friendly and helpful. For the price it was really good, especially with the Keycash. It was clean enough and everything worked ok. Would probably stay there again.
- Shaun (8/5): - Budget friendly, very nice staff, clean rooms
- Matthew (8/5): - It is not updated, but for the price and location you can't complain. It is satisfactory and sufficient if you are looking for a place to sleep between Cedar Point days.
- Eric (8/5): - As others have noted, this was recently purchased by a new owner who has experience in the hotel industry. Super friendly and accommodating. Our stay was what we wanted - close to the park and affordable. The beds were clean, the TV and fridge worked great. There was coffee and donuts in the lobby. We were 5 mins from the park. Highly recommend Zuppaman for a meal, which is 1 minute away. Good stay!
- Emily (10/5): - Very affordable and the room was a nice size for what we paid.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Good location, friendly staff. The rooms/building have not been updated in some time.
- David (6/5): - The room door safety latch was broken and the door frame looked like someone tried to break into the room at one time.
- Philip (2/5): - The only positive thing I can day about this hotel is that it is cheaper than other nearby hotels. Its also 10 minutes from cedar pointm Mold growing in corners of bathroom sinks, window ac units, and hallways. Hallways feel and smell like they belong in a suspense horror film abandoned decades ago. Doors do not use actual keycards like 99.99 % of hotels use. They scrible a code on a receipt and you punch it on your room door. No idea if this code is used for only 1 door or general access to get into all rooms! Broken vending machines, deteriorating parking lot, bed mattresses are bricks, walls filled with holes and yellowish paint. Save yourself the headache and spend a little more for a quality goof night sleep!
- Kenneth (8/5): - Meh
- Verified traveler (8/5): - A bit rough around the edges but the room was clean and the price really can't be beat
- Cheri (8/5): - An older property and furnishings but very clean and worked for us. Staff was pleasant.
- Larvell (6/5): - Nice stay for the decent price
- Alisha (2/5): Do not stay. - Terrible! We booked a king room 2 WEEKS before check in. Got there and checked in and got put in a double bed. Then got moved to a king bed with no tv, it was for “someone who just wanted to sleep” and then we found a clear tube under our sheets and our toilet was backed up and was full of crap. Literally. So they moved up back to the double bed and still found stuff under the beds!
- denise (4/5): Stay away from here - It was just bad for everyone who went
- Jason (4/5): - I did not like the room. Carpets were disgusting and dirty. The bed was okay. I didn't particularly like the smell of room or atmosphere of place, no working WIFI. Disappointing. I know the new owner plans on renovating it, but I just was not a comfortable/accommodating hotel.
- Gatudes (8/5): - No comments
- sarah (10/5): - Clean, comfortable Best value in the area
- Glenn (4/5): - Room 131 needs a LOT of work. Plaster on widows, carpet, and walls are in need of serious repairs, as are the outlets, blinds, and A/c unit. Holes in walls, and chair that needs to be replaced. I couldn’t believe that they actually rented this room. Staff was friendly but they gave us the wrong code to our room and alarm sounded.
I knew we were getting a cheap room, but this is beyond. Owner said they just bought the place two months ago. I’m going to suggest that they get a LOT of repairs done…and soon.
- Paul (6/5): - Na
- Cecile (2/5): - I’ve never been so disappointed in a hotel! We arrive and pull up and it literally looks like a deserted shutdown hotel. The picture from the app of the courtyard absolutely looks nothing like it does. There are weeds everywhere and things are overgrown, the pool was clean, but the concrete all around it is in need of a total redo. We had to walk up the stairs to our room and we literally thought the stairs and the platform were going to cave in. We had to walk up the stairs to our room and we literally thought the stairs and the platform we’re going to cave in. Our room was clean, simple, very outdated, didn’t even have fresh already wrapped up toilet paper and thankfully, we did sleep well because we brought our own pillows. The app said there were washers and dryers, but all the washers and dryers, snack machine and ice machine all said “out of order.” So whoever did the advertisement should be so disappointed in themselves because it looks absolutely horrible on the outside. I feel like I paid a decent amount of money for two nights that we did stay, for a place that looked like it was rundown, extremely outdated and falling apart!!
EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED & would sadly NEVER recommend anyone going there!
- Joshua (8/5): - This place was ok for our little weekend trip. Staff was very helpful and nice. Outside looks rundown and kinda crappy. The room was average though and no real complaints. Definitely a place to go if you dont care about the look and just plan on using it to shower and sleep.
- Nathaniel (4/5): - Floors and mattress were dirty. Toilet seat looks 40 years old.
- Scott (10/5): Very good budget hotel - If you go in with high expectations, this is not the hotel for you. We were perfectly content with it however. Our towel rack was broken and one of our sink drains was stuck in the down position, but we had 2 sinks so we used the other one, no big deal. It smelled clean, the beds were comfortable and the shower had good pressure and hot water. This is all we need when booking a room. The best part is that it was nearly half the price of all the franchise hotels in the area. I’d recommend this place to everyone.
- Danica (8/5): - New owner very friendly. Recently purchased and scheduled for renovations.
Would stay again, beds very comfortable!
- Sandra (2/5): - BEWARE!!! The pictures on the web site are not current. The picture of the inn resembles the inn but maybe 50 years ago and never maintained. The picture of the courtyard doesn't exist on the property and i have no idea where it came from. The room was filthy. Bathroom door was broke and couldn't be shut. No curtains on the window just 3 old accordion blinds that were filthy. The AC units cover was busted and the inside of the unit was covered in mold. I shut the unit off and tried to go to sleep. I called several other hotels in the area and they had no vacancy. We were only there overnight to pick up a car and go home so we just went to bed early and got up very very early to get out of there. I also doesn't get all the 5 star reviews on their website. I go through Expedia with most of my travel needs to try and avoid getting into this situation. I may need to rethink doing this. I'm especially surprised that Expedia had all the old pictures of this inn. I never would have book this with current pictures. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!
- Robin (10/5): - Great stay, very close to Cedar Point. Building was older but clean and comfortable. Would definitely stay again.
- Cassandra (2/5): - Thought we would give this hotel a try. Should have cancelled before we checked in! Property is old, outdated and not clean! Locks on doors are sketchy, dirty carpets and floors, door to room was hard to open. The beds seemed like they were 20 years old. We brought our things to our room to only put everything back in the car and go to a different hotel!!!
- Ryan (6/5): Sketchy Dated but nice staff - This hotel is dated and would have been amazing in the 80s. The desk staff was friendly but the place has a rundown grimy feel. The pool was dirty but could have been fine with a good skimmer and run the filter. The sketchy part was some of the people staying here.
- Chanelle (8/5): - Nice staff. Its clean and nice bedding
- Casimer (10/5): - Great place
- Amanda (10/5): - This property was wonderful.
- David (6/5): - Rooms in disrepair, no safety chain on door. Advertised coffee in room no coffee in room but had coffee maker. One hot air pot in lobby with two small containers of grocery donuts, very few electric plug options. Not been updated, painted for long while. No tv remote. Manager programmed new remote when reminded later that night. Did not feel safe as an older female in surroundings.
- Amber (10/5): - Great location and staff. Memorable
- Patricia (2/5): - We read reviews that said this place a decent and clean so we booked. Don’t believe good reviews. Our room smelled like an old ashtray we had to buy air freshener just to tolerate it. The furniture and curtains were at least 50 years old and smelled. The carpet was sticky. The property is not maintained and very outdated. It was too late to get refund, but we almost just left.
- Jessica (6/5): - There's this funny smell in the room and there no elevators I really it's a bit difficult to go up stairs do to a bad knee.
- Arthur (10/5): - Super comfy and clean. The two most important things in a hotel room!
- Carolyn (10/5): - The main desk worker was very nice. Pool was nice
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The staff were very kind. The room had what it needed and was clean and kempt. It was old and had a smell like ammonia/cat pee which I think speaks to its age. That made it a bit hard to breathe in the room, otherwise it worked as a good cheap place to sleep in and go.
- Thomas (2/5): - The smell of this place was enough to drive me away. So gross. And the staff was busy cooking then finally came to check m in with food on his shirt. I literally could not get in my room with the two codes I was given scribbled on a torn corner of notebook paper. After seeing my room I immediately left and went to another hotel. Run down. Nasty. Smelled like mildew and curry. I would avoid.
- Michael (10/5): - Very nice staff, very fair with fees
- Emily (10/5): - This is my 2nd time staying and I loved it even more the 2nd time around! We got to enjoy the pool and courtyard area for a pizza party. Great space! The staff is also so incredibly nice, caring, and accommodating. I am SO happy that after years of trying different hotels and being disappointed, I’ve finally found the place I’ll keep coming back to every time I’m in Sandusky, which is 10-15 times per year. Not luxury, but clean, comfortable, enjoyable and affordable.
- William (6/5): Ok clean room - Toilet seat was loose. Beds were hard. But it was clean
- Daniel (8/5): - The exterior of the facility was poor-overgrown grass, cracked concrete in the parking lot. But the room was exceptionally clean and comfortable. The pool was also in working order. This motel has great potential.
- Keith (10/5): - This hotel is dated but is ETREMELY CLEAN and well maintained. The lobby is luxurious and the rooms are a throw-back to simpler times. Will definitely be staying again.
- Cathie (6/5): - Just d didn’t understand why their where nothing on any walls? We only had one lamp in the whole room. Walls threw out the interior where dinghy and dirty. But not one picture
- Anna (6/5): - The elevator didnt work, the wifi was not working on the 2nd floor where we were staying. I wasnt told about breakfast. I was lied to that someone was out fixing the wifi and would call me when they returned. I was told they would try to fix it or change my accommodations and nothing was done. They did give me another blanket when asked but i had to come down and get it.
- Robert (8/5): - The property was older than some, but overall very clean. There was a musty smell in the room but it was clean. For what I paid to stay there one night it was worth it. A little off the beaten path, so it was very quiet. I’d stay there again.
- Katrina (10/5): - Nice place to stay if going to the park. The front desk staff is very nice and helpful. Pool water was clear and warm. Have stayed there twice and will be going back again in a couple weeks. It is a dated hotel but clean and perfect for what we need.
- Adam (10/5): - Only real complaint I have was the shower was a bit complex to use
- Samir (2/5): - This place should not be listed on Expedia! I’m disappointed because I paid decent money. Yes it was across the street from cedar point but that doesn’t make it a good property and I would have expected Expedia to do some research before including such a dilapidated hotel (I wouldn’t even call it that)
- Thanadis (4/5): - The Internet in my room doesn't work. The lobby smell not good. The light in room is too dim.
- Angela (10/5): - Friendly staff. Owner explain that he had only owned the place for two months and had lots of plans for improving it.
- nicholas (6/5): - This was pretty good for a budget hotel. The area was very quiet and we got a good night's sleep. The air conditioning system did not do a good job of pulling humidity out of the air, so the carpet and bedding felt perpetually a little sticky though.
- Hayley (10/5): - The front desk woman helped me make sure there was a refrigerator in our room so i could keep my breast milk good !!! I was away from my newborn and she made sure we had what we needed ! The price is right , exspecially if your not planning on being there n need just for sleep and showers!!
- KIRK (8/5): - Rooms was clean
- John (8/5): - Staff was very friendly. Rooms were clean. Great location to Cedar Point! Definitely needs some upgrades and landscaping.
- Valerie (2/5): - That old saying yo get what you pay for is very accurate. Room smelled like mold and mildew and the bedding was damp. I tried to cancel the last night and they told me to take it up with Expedia who I booked it through. They had no room key or credit card slot but they gave me a handwritten code to punch into the lock to get in and get out. I would highly not recommend this place at all.
- Stephanie (4/5): - The staff was very nice but the rooms were dirty and the door was barely able to be locked.
- Anthony (10/5): - It was cheap close to cedar point can be cleaned a little better but was decent beds are small
- Emily (8/5): - Really great for the price. It’s no high end hotel, but if you just want a clean place to stay without breaking the bank, this is it. There are definitely some things that are a little old and slightly run down. However, it was VERY clean, comfortable, everything worked the way it was supposed to, and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. Honestly, compared to other budget hotels in the area, Avalon is a GEM. Highly recommend as a budget option.
- Jenny (8/5): -
ROOM 171
This hotel is very out dated and very sketchy from the outside. The main lobby has been remodeled & is 2 floors with NO ELEVATOR.
Our room was ok but lots of repairs that could be made. No breakfast available, which we knew up front. But also there was No refrigerator in room, No phone to call front desk, No blow dryer in the bathroom.
The price was cheap so I guess you get what you pay for. Staff was very friendly.
All of the furniture was pushed together in to the corner of the room, the curtains are very old and falling apart so we closed them and just left them closed the 3days.
No bag rack to sit your bag on so you have to keep your stuff on the bed or on the floor. Beds were comfortable for the most part. The pool was heated, but needs some work.
Shower could use a little TLC as it looked dirty, but the rest of the bathroom was ok. Very small. We talked to the office staff and they had only owned the property for 2-3weeks and they was trying to get the hotel up and running. We did ask for a refrigerator and they got us one to use. We would stay here again no questions asked.
- Brenda (8/5): - Spent 2 nights, 3 days here in the king room. There was a microwave, tv, iron board/iron, a coffee pot with cups. Outlets on lamp are finicky. The location is conveniently close to Cedar point & has plenty of parking as the area is car dependent. If you don't get the dining plan at Cedar point, the usual big chains are nearby & Berardi's is a good local spot. Considering the price point, expect a bug sighting or 2 as the rooms lack ventilation and have a lingering mildew smell. The walls are thin so you will hear everything, don't reccommend if you're a light sleeper. The bed was comfy and the water pressure was strong. Check in was easy, attentive, and helpful.
- Erica (2/5): - The place is very dirty and doesn't have good upkeep.ave good upkeep.
- Duane (6/5): Low Price Low Expectations - My stay was not up to expectations. When you first walk in, the floor tile is exquisite, which was on their photo. The staff was friendly. I was asked if the secknd floor would be okay. It doesn't have an elevator, so no. I'm older, disabled, and had 5 bags, 2 heavy. The hallway to the room smelled like air freshener. I had to figure out how to enter the door passcode. There was no refrigerator and need one for some meds and water. No maid service, which was fine. I had some sensitive items. The floor was filthy and dust was balled up between the bed and night stand. AC worked well. Light ballast in the bathroom was old and worked 50% of the time. People would hang around ouside the lobby and smoke. Plenty of parking but the lot is in poor condition. I didnt complain as i wasn't on vacation and price mattered since i was in town for 10 days.
- Scott (2/5): Spend the money someplace else - I booked this based on all the good reviews on hotels.com and I was fooled.
I pulled in and the hotel was very dark I thought I was at the roaring place it looked abandoned, checked in and got into the 1st room and it was gross to say the least stained carpets stained furniture lamp shade cracked ac unit cracked.....so I went down to ask for a broom that had been already refurbished because based on reviews I had read the hotel was being refurbished so they gave me another room that was considered a two-room suite that I entered from the outside and the digital locks that they had put on all the doors now this one was crooked and there was no interior way to deadbolt the door The second room that was considered the bedroom of this two-room suite had a portable air conditioning unit in it which seemed very odd to me.
I woke up in the middle of the night to use the restroom and found that the toilet was broken and would not work So I woke up in the morning packed all my things went downstairs checked out as I was supposed to be staying there two days told the owner that the toilet didn't work and the room was not very nice and he asked what room I was in and I told him room 219 and his comment was oh that's one of the nice rooms. I don't know what he considers nice but obviously we have a different definition I had to check out and leave I could not stay there two nights.
- Cheryl (2/5): - No refrigerator, only 3 regular size pillows for a king bed.
- Monica (2/5): - There was blood on the sheets. There was holes in the wall, and it was just nasty and it smelt like pot. And the lady at the desk was rude.
- Shawn (8/5): - The property was a little dirty and out dated, but it was good for us for just an overnight stay. The reception staff were friendly and attentive also!
- Cindy (10/5): - Great place for overnight stay when visiting cedar point. Would stay again
- Éliot (10/5): - Pas le plus beau hôtel, mais sinon tout est parfait!
- Chris (10/5): - The price was unbeatable and you got a lot for the low price.
- Zachary (4/5): - Very basic. Very mediocre. Clean-ish, but very rundown. Felt like there was a layer of grime on everything. Room was quite dark without the blinds open, which was awkward on the ground level
- Jeff (4/5): - Wifi was not accessible from the room. TV was not connected to the cable. There were used washclothes from the previous guest left in the room. I did not receive housekeeping during my stay. The outside stairs to the second floor were very unstable and felt like they could collapse soon. Decent location for a last minute booking to Ironman 70.3 Ohio, but it is in a rougher part of Sandusky. Would not recommend walking around this part of town after dark.
- Sammantha (6/5): - My partner and I stayed at the Avalon Inn for two nights while on a roadtrip. Overall, our stay was comfortable. The staff at the property were kind and accomodating; while checking in, the man who assisted us at the front desk offered to help us bring our luggage to our room which was very kind. The property itself is very out-dated and is in need of renovations; it feels straight out of the late 80's which, although charming, warrants some updates. Our room was on the second floor in an inconvenient location far from the parking lot and up rickety concrete stairs (as there no elevators close by). Despite the pictures posted of the grand courtyard, this area too is in need of repairs. Our room was clean but not the most comfortable. Our bed and sheets were noticably stiff and the faucet on our bathtub leaked constantly. Unfortunately, the hotel wifi did not work during our stay which left my partner unable to finish certain work obligations. For a short duration, the Avalon Inn provides a decent stay for a decent price; but it does not come highly recommended at this time.
- Wojciech (4/5): Don't believe positive reviews - Don't believe positive reviews. The hotel is very outdated inside and out. Furniture in the room is old and in bad shape. Stains on carpet. Bathtub is also old and unappealing, water barely drains. They reemodel the lobby but forgot about the rest of the hotel.
- Leah (8/5): - Efficient.
- Steve (2/5): - Had cockroaches in our room and they were difficult with us trying to get our money back! Ruined our whole vacation because all the other hotels were booked solid and we had to go back home!
- Michael (6/5): - It was a little dingy, pretty outdated. Although the room was a non-smoking room, it still had a little scent of smokiness to it. The pool outside was over chlorinated. But, on the plus side the room was quiet, it did, but it was supposed to do. I just feel like the price was pretty high for what you got.
- Dennis (2/5): - when I checked out I couldn't get a receipt to this day I still don't have a receipt it was just terrible would not recommend it to anybody the pool was dirtyThe property was run down
- Derek (10/5): - Great small hotel. Very friendly staff
- Jill (10/5): - Very nice front deck employee. Not sure if his name but very friendly and helpful. The bed wasn't very comfortable but otherwise I was very happy. It was super quiet did not hear any noise. Price was excellent and location. It does need some more renovating but they are working on it. Very clean room and pleasantly surprised there was a big refrigerator and a microwave in room. Under previous owner there was no fridge in rooms. Would definitely stay again.
- Preston (10/5): - Very clean and quiet
- Marco (10/5): Nice little newly renovated. - Nice hotel being renovated by new owners. Have keyless locks, which is great, just have a passcode to get into room. Needs some good landscaping and they can turn this place into a nice little spot! Pool was nice, needs a little tlc but they got it. Employees were super nice and assisted with any of our needs.
