Guest Reviews
- Louise (10/5): - Great breakfast. Wonderful evening meal
- Jennifer (10/5): - Clean, quiet room with comfy beds. Warm, modern bathroom with great shower. Very friendly, helpful staff & lovely food. Good views but you do need a car to get to it & there are no paths for a walk.
- K (8/5): - Clean and confortable, very good value including dinner and especially breakfast. Staff welcoming and attentive. A special mention to the person who seemed to be making it all happen, Ionella who's attention to detail and guests was amazing.
- james (8/5): happy couple - we were very happy with the breakfast and evening meal etc the staff were very good, the room was ok except for the winding stairs to the top floor but we managed alright,
the only problem with the hotel we found was the lack of
a bus service etc you have to get taxi if you want to go into town or drive and find car park, all in all a lovely hotel and staff.
- Derek (10/5): - Staff were welcoming, room warm and clean with lovely views. Would stay there again.
One minor grumble: no-one told us about fire precautions. On our 1st stay our room was up a very narrow twisty staircase which would have been difficult to get down if there was a fire.
- Derek (10/5): - Staff were welcoming and helpful, room clean and warm with lovely views.
Would definitely book again.
- P (10/5): - Clean compact room
Staff excellent and attentive
- Bruce (10/5): - Every thing fine ,very welcoming, lovely room lovely food ...will come again thank you
- William (10/5): - Very friendly staff. Nice bar and lounge.
Our room was small but comfy and clean. Would certainly recommend
- quyen (8/5): - Staff were very nice. Beautiful building in a convenient location. Our room’s heater couldn’t be adjusted or turned off so we were really hot. The linen and furnitures were comfortable. The tv was tiny, so that should definitely upgraded. Breakfast was delicious. We didn't have dinner but the reviews showed high recommendations from other guests.
- Daniel (8/5): - The property was perfect for an autumn weekend away. There must of been an issue with the thermostat however as it felt like 100oC despite the windows open. Couldn’t switch the radiators off. Given the price of the booking, you’d of thought breakfast was included, I was wrong. Wanted to eat in the hotel in the evening, as the food smelt delicious however was told by staff that all tables were full for the night which was a shame. So a late night shop to Booths it was.
- Alan (10/5): Recommended - Comfortable room, very friendly staff and lovely meal.
- Lynne (8/5): - Excellent food. Lovely bedrooms, very comfortable. Poor location.
- Richard (8/5): - Lovely hotel, convenient location, quite scenic (excluding the road thatvwas rather busy). The staff were excellent, evening meal was great and at a good price. Room was spacious and well decorated. A few negatives unfortunately, the room was extremely dusty in places such as the corners and bottom of the table, the less obvious places. Although the restaurant was lovely food, i wasn't a fan of being able to smell every dish that was cooked in our room which in turn meant all our cloths smelled of cooking. I had to stand on a chair to draw the curtains as they would not move on the curtain pole. A personal opinion which may not matter to others was the mattress, i like a medium or firm mattress, this im afraid was like sleeping on a bean bag, very soft and had the sinking effect which lead to a poor nights sleep, however a soft mattress may favour other guests.
- Ailsa (8/5): - Very friendly staff and a jolly vibe
- Ana (10/5): - The hotel was very comfortable and I enjoyed my stay, staff were welcoming and friendly, lovely room and good food.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Overall an all right stay - Pros: very dog friendly, space to allow dogs to be off lead (but under control); comfy bed and bedding; clean, good shower; great food in the restaurant downstairs; close to motorway for an easy set off home, yet only 12 min from Ambelside.
Cons: stained, old, dirty carpet; sticky bathroom floor; charge for dogs says £15 on all adverts, yet tried to charge £20, not a huge deal but detail like that lowers the rating in my opinion; one morning had to ask for tea bags as not been replaced; for some people it may matter that it's a bit on the outskirts of Lake District and there isn't much within walking distance; breakfast not included which, added to the above, lowers value for money.
Staff are all right, but don't seem to be going out of their way, so to speak. They seemed a bit grumpy, but might just be my impression. Very steep and narrow stairs but that's made very clear on adverts.
- B (10/5): - Excellent well presented room. Really good staff, great location.
- Tracy (10/5): Hotel guests - We stayed here for two night’s lovely staff food beautiful and hotel very clean and welcoming
- Jacqueline (10/5): Gateway Inn stay - We spent two nights at the Gateway Inn and it was excellent. The rooms are spacious and spotless and the staff were great. Very helpful ,courteous and welcoming. The food was delicious. Lots of variety for breakfast and the main menu has something for everyone. Definitely recommend the Lamb Henry. We dined on both nights and we’re not disappointed . It gets busy so you have to book it. Must mention they have a good selection of ales and wines to suit all tastes. We will definitely be going back and have recommended it to all our friends and family. Must mention Dog friendly . They look after your pet too . Benji loved his gift.
- Hirudika (10/5): - We booked a family room and it was amazing, very clean, cute room.
- Peter (10/5): - This is a beautiful hotel just a few miles off the motorway but on the other she of Kendal.
The Rooms are tastefully decorated, clean and comfortable. We will come again for a longer stay. Just beautiful
- Mark (8/5): Going back again !!! - Good stay. Food was very good. The waitress was excellent (didn’t catch her name.) was very helpful in recommending my meal although she did say the roast was good and it did look good lol ! Complimentary chocolates is a really good idea and they were delicious. Will 100% go back next time I’m in the area.

- Colleen (6/5): - Room wasn't that clean.
The toilet kept us awake all night, it kept filling up and was quite noisy. Hotel can do with a bit of an upgrade. It was pretty average.

- Owen (10/5): - Great location.
Friendly staff.
Evening meal was excellent
- Nabilah (10/5): - The room and toilet were spacious which made our stay very comfortable. It only has one dining option which seems to be frequented by locals as well. The area is very peaceful and well maintained. The only con is that there isn't a lift in the property which can be challenging for someone who can't really climb stairs.
- Michael (10/5): - Excellent food and service
- Sonia (8/5): - Great stay
- jane (10/5): - Our room was lovely, with a comfortable bed and a very nice ensuite. The staff were very friendly and helpful.
- Kenneth Paul (10/5): - Great place, very conveniently situated and staff very helpful.
- Stuart (10/5): Would recommend The Gateway. - Very nice room, clean and tidy, mattress was a little bit soft but other than that superb.
Arrival chocolates was a nice touch too.
Food was amazing and good selection of beers available.
- Paul (10/5): Great food and value for money. - Excellent value for money, the room was lovely with a great view. A little welcome present as well.
The food was fantastic, had the roast they do, very nice!
Staff were all very polite and helpful, definitely recommend, half way between Windermere and Kendal, so a great location.
- Stuart (10/5): - Nice local hotel. Nice rooms and lovely breakfast
- Kieran (10/5): - Lovely place to stay, staff were very friendly and the food was very good

- Gary (8/5): Lovely stay - Had a nice 1 night stay at Gateway. Nice place and great breakfast. Bed was a bit tired and could do with replacing
- Rhydian Wyn (8/5): - Nice menu and choice of drinks
- Matt (10/5): - Clean room, great restaurant, wonderful staff!
- Daniel (10/5): - Amazing property for a bargain price & will forever be part of my engagement weekend I arrange for my partner & I.
Will visit again!
Thanks,
Danny
- Robert (10/5): - Friendly staff, nice food and comfortable room.
- Duncan (10/5): - Great food. Helpful staff. Stunning room
- Keith (8/5): - Staff were lovely. Hotel is well situated.
Food was great.
- Jodie-Lee (6/5): - The room was overstuffed with furniture and difficult to manoeuvre. The coffee was undrinkable and I paid $16 AUD for 2 pieces of toast. Situated a fair distance from the town centre, so would have chosen differently in hindsight.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Comfortable friendly Lakeland hotel - Comfortable stay in rooms of good decor with friendly and engaging staff. Excellent breakfast and good dinner menu. Bed rather too soft, but I understand due to be replaced shortly. Competitively priced for those visiting lakes with transport.
- Luke (10/5): Cozy country style bedroom - Really comfy bed and cozy room. Perfect lil stop over for work. Would stay again
- Julia (4/5): - The toilet seat was broken and came off when i sat on it and I subsequently fell on the floor. They refused to accept that it was broken and essentially accused me of lying saying that no one had said anything before. The seat attachment had clearly been broken for some time. The member of staff was exceptionally rude and stern with me.
- Frank (6/5): Kendall trip - Front of house grumpy
Bar service good
Traffic noise
Towels were dirty
- Nicolas (10/5): Nicolas - Amazing from beginning to end. Definitely will be using this hotel again.
- Paula (10/5): - We had the most wonderful night’s stay at The Gateway Inn - friendly smiley staff, superb drinks selection, delicious dinner (lamb henry and sea bass), comfy bed, sparkly clean bathroom, delicious breakfast (we had the most amazing eggs benedict with perfectly-poached eggs, plus the cereal, yogurt, fruit, granola, nuts and seeds, high-quality jam, toast, cheese, Nutella, tea and coffee….all for £8.95!). We couldn’t have asked for more for a rare getaway as parents of a tween and a teen. Thank you - highly recommend this place!
- Deborah (8/5): Lovely short break. - The rooms were above a pub/restaurant, but it was a nice the pub did not get busy and it was very quaint. Menu looked nice. We had the family room with connecting doors. The rooms were lovely and big, comfortable with all the facilities needed. If we ran out, the staff was happy to help. We only had one problem, and that was with the toilet. It kept running, so it kept me up on the first night. The manager was nice enough to offer me another room though, until the toilet could be fixed. It was a lovely place, i would stay again. The only 2 things I would change would be to have more fluffy pillows and thicker windows. We was near a main road so herd traffic sometimes, hotel.com dont show the hotel on their photos, that it is near a main road.
- Ella (10/5): - Lovely stay here the food was amazing and the staff were so catering.
- Julie (10/5): Perfect - Amazing. Hotel lovely. Room lovely. Breakfast also lovely and they also cater for gluten free diets. Staff were amazing and friendly. Would stay again and recommend to others. Perfectly situated between Windemere and Kendal
- Rachel (10/5): Wonderful stay! - We stayed overnight on our way to Scotland. The room was super comfy & clean, & the staff were all lovely & extremely helpful. We had dinner & breakfast & the food & service was excellent. Wish we'd stayed longer & will visit again in the future!
- Mark (10/5): - Amazing as usual
- Mark (10/5): Top stay - Best value for money hotel ive stayed in for long time. Room was clean and comfortable. The onsuite shower could do with being hotter but thats being picky.
The gem is the restaurant. Busy on both evenings but staff were on the ball, attentive with food being delivered roasting hot.
Both nights I had Chicken and Leek pie. Absolutely superb hence why i had it twice! A mention in dispatches for chips, best chips Ive had ever, fact. Rest of the menu looks good but the Roasts are legendary.
Never been to The Gateway before but will return.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Comfortable friendly stay - The room is big to fit family with luggage.bed is clean and comfortable, friendly check in and easy check out.safe and convenience
- Barrie (10/5): - We had a wonderful weekend break here , food was fantastic and will definitely be returning .
- Paul (10/5): - Room was a bit on the all side for a deluxe room but the staff and food more than made up for it
- Mark (10/5): - This was a really convenient location for our business trip. The hotel is really beautiful.
- TESSA (10/5): Very pleasantly surprised. - I stayed for 2 nights whilst on business locally.
My initial thought on booking was, it'll do but I was very pleasantly surprised. With it's warm, super friendly atmosphere and cosy furnishings I decided not to venture out & stayed to dine here both nights. I very much enjoyed my meals so much so I went for the Roast Dinner on both evenings - I can highly recommend. Thank you to Emma & Shane, sorry I didn't take the names of the other peeps but they were all lovely!
- Gordon (10/5): Great - Great venue , lovely and warm rooms and in great order.
