Guest Reviews
- Jaye (9/5): great flat - lovely location, lovely flat. stairs getting in were a little small and rickedy
- Christine (7/5): - Spotlessly clean. Tea, coffee, and milk provided. A well stocked kitched. Comfortable bed. Easy to use TV and WiFi. Lovely fluffy towels and toiletries. There is plenty of free parking. The shops & cafes within walking distance. The flat is on the 3rd floor, and from the outside, the building looks dated. The stairs to the 3rd floor are quiet steep.
- Neil H (8/5): Pleasant stay overall. - Location, well priced, comfortable overall. Dog friendly. Same niggles as all the other reviews, sadly they seem to come up time and time again but not addressed. Overall can't grumble for the price point though.
- Ruth (6/5): - Comfortable bed TV not working properly.
Lockbox high up and only being 5ft1, struggled to open it
Hand basin in bathroom far too high
- Andy (9/5): -
- Angela (3/5): disappointed - Good location The building from the outside looked like a squat. The hallway and stairs was discussing...damp wallpaper falling off filthy stair carpet and the last level of stairs were dangerously narrow.
- Michael (7/5): 1st impressions count - Clean, comfortable, and good location Awful 1st impression. Poor lightning and TV signal.
- Dave (7/5): -
- paul (10/5): - Everything The entrance to the building wasn't lit and was pretty shabby I was a little scared of what our apartment was going to be like but I was impressed when I opened the door to the apartment everything was very nice all I needed 5 star rating
- Cyper (8/5): Great flat, highly recommended - location and flat's layout was great. entrance to flat was a bit scruffy, the carpet needs refurbishing. The bathroom sink was too high, needs fixing. Overall great.
- Ellen (10/5): We love Saltburn by the sea. Emerald Hideaway is in the perfect location. Next to the sea and centre. - Great size, immaculately clean. The view š
- Ellen (7/5): The apartment was lovely, apart from the bed and sink it was comfortable. - Lovely apartment close to everything in Saltburn including sea front and lovely view from bedroom window. Clean with all facilities you need for your stay. The bed ! It was two singles clipped together and there was a hard ridge in the middle. Very uncomfortable. Also not being very tall the bathroom sink. Far too high unless youāre 6ft tall .
- Nigel (9/5): - Lovely and clean. Close to all amenities. Been before and would stop there again. Everything was great.
- Mark (8/5): -
- Janet (8/5): Great seaside apartment, in lovely seaside town - We travel around Britain a lot and in lots of ways this was the best apartment we have ever stayed in. It was extremely clean, spacious, modern, everything we needed. We had NO live TV the whole time we were there! Only catch up TV. We contacted Host soon after we arrived, who sent a 'Maintenance man' who actually didnt know anything about the TV. He did get it going for a little while, but it was clearly aerial problems. We spent the rest of our stay trying to get someone to come, without success. Someone called on morning of departure to say they'd be there, after we left.......
Also the bed was so uncomfortable in places. Full of hard lumps, like springs!!! Couldnt beleive it as everything else was so modern and good.
- Tracy (7/5): Very comfortable and relaxing - Fantastic location
The flat was very comfortable and quiet and the bedroom was very cosy
Really nice retreat Some issues with the WiFi and signal for the tv. The radio didnāt work in the bedroom.
The kitchen was a little dark and needed more light.
- Melissa (9/5): Apartment Lovely location perfect, bad experience with booking.com - The apartment had everything you could need and more, loved the bath. Perfect location. Check in was 4 o'clock, and at 4 o'clock no one had got back to me on how to collect the keys or the address. I had to ring booking.com to speak too someone on where the accommodation was, and how to get in. When we eventually worked out where the accommodation was it was now nearly 4:20pm.
I had been messaging the sent email and phone number , from 2 o'clock onwards to see if we could get in or find out the location but to no response back. So I assumed I just had to wait till 4. 4 o'clock came and still nothing. Once I spoken to the agent, he said he had sent messages but I had received nothing. When we left the property 2 days later I was starting to receive emails on how to get into the property
So I was very unhappy to say the least, on our first experience. It was a very very cold day, and i was absolutely freezing by this point. This has put me off booking apartments in the future due to this experience. I booked this property as it mentioned a balcony. I didn't see the point in the balcony, it was the only one in the complex and faced an enclosed carpark , also 2 people could not go on the balcony at once. I did not feel safe on my own on the balcony either. I think that needs removing or making safer.
- Alex (8/5): Very good -
- Grant (6/5): Pleasant - Great location and apartment was very nice 1st impressions not great outside and entrance very shabby. Key safe box was not working properly . Last day of my stay there was a gas leak so i didn't have any hot water or heating for most of the day and evening but when it came back on boiler wouldn't work so no heating or water for the rest of my stay
- Gary (5/5): The inside of the property was beautiful but stair approach shocking and dangerous - Excellent and covenient Front door key kept getting stuck, hallway smelt of gas and the general condition of the hallway was appalling and dangerous as the light went out in about 5 seconds
- Linda (4/5): Disappointing - the view however had to stand by the windows to see the sea No hooks to hang towels , coats etc
Shocked that we are having to pay a leakage fee of £25 and £10 of that is non as they take this for admin fees!
The outside and stair ways were shabby and as smelt of gas
There was a damp patch in the room
Crockery unsuitablele for a microwave
- Thomas (10/5): Exceptional -
- Brian (9/5): Very enjoyable - Great location, very comfortable and clean Poor television options
Coffee machine didnāt work
- Michael (8/5): Great property... beware extra costs & requirements. - Great location, very smart flat on the top floor of a terraced house (observation; final flight of stairs are steep with small treads) and only 4 min walk to the station and shops.
View of the sea from the front windows; a short walk across the road and down the cliff to the beach.
Don't be fooled by the tatty entrance to the building; the flat itself is very smart, clean, and tidy, and facilities within are perfect. This property is a little gem, and perfect for a couple. Overall, we enjoyed our time in a well-maintained property that the owners are clearly (and justifiably) proud of. HOWEVER, there are some aspects that (for us) took the shine off our stay:
Last minute demand from Host and Stay for either £25 "damage waiver fee" or a £250 bond to cover for damage. I feel this should be included in booking details and not sprung on guests as an extra later on; it added over 10% to our costs.
Further "updates" and welcome messages from Host and Stay included references to damages, various fees for late check-out etc. Maybe they have some pretty dirty/careless/rowdy guests, so this is considered necessary for a couple spending two nights in a one bedroom property š¤·āāļø
The "guide" provided by "Host and Stay" has some very helpful and useful information. But it also contains "check out procedures" requiring guests to carry out cleaning tasks. (Bag up towels, strip the bed and bag up sheets , pillow cases and duvet cover, empty bins to the outside of the property, wipe down all surfaces with disinfectant) It felt more like a 1970s Youth Hostel, with guests expected to carry out chores before checking out, than a modern apartment stay. I've never stayed in a hotel or apartment that required this, and, at the price point, wouldn't have stayed here if I'd known in advance.
- Irene (7/5): Very happy and satisfactory - convenient for all amenities no washing machine
no long mirror
bathroom sink too high
- Jane (8/5): Nice apartment for two. - The apartment was in a good spot near the seafront with easy access to the beach, restaurants and shops. It was clean, modern and well equipped. On-street parking was easy and free. It was generally quiet and a pleasant area. The apartment was let down by the front garden, entrance and the lower stairwell which was scruffy and poorly maintained. The window in the sitting room wouldn't close as the mechanism was corroded.
- Diane (10/5): Exceptional - Good communication with property owner.
Loved the idea of milk in the fridge ready for our arrival
- Stuart (10/5): Excellent we would totally reconsider coming back - The cleanliness and the facilities 4 constructive criticisms. 1) I have OCD and the cups in the kitchen didnāt match 2) the light in the kitchen only lit up one side of the kitchen, there needed to be an extra light on the other side of the beam 3) the shower needed to have one of those power shower heads the force the flow faster 4) the common hallway needed to be refurbished as this let down the appearance
- Lianna (8/5): Lovely and stylish flat, ideally located for exploration of picturesque Saltburn - Very nicely furnished and well-designed flat. Bathroom to a very high standard. Ideally located for the seafront/cliff walks, and also town centre/food shops. Very quiet, and I slept extremely well. Lovely to have the sea view from the bedroom window each morning. Very handy to have salt, pepper, vinegar, tea, coffee and milk on arrival (often things that get overlooked when packing!) Easy lockbox entry system. Added bonus of internet TV/Netflix, etc (often, when travelling you'll just get a pixellated Freeview). Felt very 'at home' throughout and very relaxed - just what you want with self-catering! Would definitely rebook. Agree with other reviewers in that the front of the building/entryway does not do the interior justice/looks a little sketchy. Once inside, though, it's a different world! Also agree that the mattress is not the best. My advice: take the lovely throws provided and lay them on the top of the mattress under the bedsheets. Gives some padding and makes it a bit more comfy. Ideally would've preferred there to be proper chain locks on the flat door, given the state of the main building entrance, as a female travelling solo.
- Donald (1/5): Close to town and the beach but the approach to the property was gruesome - Not there long enough but kitchen facilities were good, new and modern with plenty of utensils. The fancy coffee maker didnāt work and we have a similar machine but two pods were wasted. If weād arrived late at night I wouldnāt have walked through the door. It was gruesome. The garden was shabby to say the least, the front door disgusting, letter box looked as if it had been set alight at some point. Walking through the door looked like a drug den ⦠carpet in hallway and stairs and landing was dirty, shabby and torn - not even carpet, think it was felt. Wallpaper falling off the wall. Third floor approach to apartment was better⦠and apartment was modern but the bedroom had a stale odour even though the window was wide open.
- Helen (3/5): On the whole great, but some real issues, strange building smells. A bit confusing re my booking. Saltburn is beautiful, - Kitchen really well equipped, no scissors though. The entrance hall and stairs are a million times worse than expected, such a same
- Shirley (8/5): Enjoyed Saltburn and the flat was in a good location - Generally facilities were very comfortable and clean inside the flat Normal Tv didnāt work, no towel rails, no ice box in the fridge, entrance poor state
- Irene (7/5): Very convenient for seafront. I enjoyed my 5 days and will be returning to stay longer. - Could see the sea
well equipped kitchen& all areas
quiet
convenient for all amenities
comfortable bed and clean throughout
Super heater. Was never cold even though the weather turned cool.
Little extras left around eg shampoo Needed a long mirror
Needed a hook on bathroom door
Bathroom sink needs to be 6 inches lower or
a small stool to stand on
balcony only cosmetic
Needs a new front door OR a new letter box
as it's stuck open
Power cut one evening about 9.30pm so had
to go to bed early. Unfortunate but it came on about 2am, so disturbed sleep.
Top stairs very narrow
- Jiayixiu (8/5): Top vacation choice - Although only one small window in the bedroom has a view of the sea, this window is oriented well, and you can see the sunrise over the sea directly from the window in the morning. The room is large, clean and cosy. Because I'm afraid of the cold, I'm happy with the whole-room heating feature of this house. The address marked on Google Maps is wrong, and I have not found it for a long time. Calls to the host were not answered, and no calls were returned. The host needs to update its location on Google Maps.
- Shaz (10/5): Brilliant stay we loved it will go back - The property was amazing , newly renovated and very clean , near everything , ideal position The flat as u come in needed , freshening up new carpet , it wasnāt emarald hideaways fault the flats down below needed to do something
- Amanda (9/5): Superb -
- Nigel (8/5): Very good - The apartment was very clean and looked just like the photos. Kitchen was nice and everything worked well. Heating worked well. We'll set out and sofa was comfortable. Good location very central. Would go back again if they put a new mattress on. It met my expectations but has room for improvement The bed was 2 pushed together and seen some action the mattress made noises as you moved. You could hear the springs .Entrance hall had damp and wall paper coming off the wall and dirty carpet. The shower wasn't thermostatic and not very good. Put the TV on Netflix on Saturday and it told me there was too many people watching it but I could subscribe for another Ā£3. Don't think soš
- Robert (8/5): Very good -
- Michael (10/5): Great appartment - Just come back from a 3 night stay at the Emerald Hideaway over the New Year weekend . The apartment was clean , warm , fresh and well equipped for all our needs . The decor was modern and it was nice to have a coffee machine as well as other teas , coffee and milk. plus the shampoo and other lotions in the bathroom . Plus only a 5 minute walk to the shops , pubs and beach . Will book again in the future.
Don't let the communal hallway on entering put you off . It just needs a touch of paint and a new carpet then I'd say would be perfect . Communal Hallway needs sorting
- Jake (6/5): Hard to find. Hidden security deposit. But nice apartment. - Clean, decent apartment with most of what you'd need for a week stay Unclear instructions as to the location - hard to find, google maps shows the wrong building. Photo of actual entrance attached below, it is house 52, and you are flat C on the top floor.
Hidden costs around a security deposit (£25 for an insurance policy or a refundable £500 deposit) this is hidden in the apartment listing.
No freezer.
- James (10/5): Exceptional -
- Simon (6/5): Hidden fees and high cost deposit - Apartment itself was clean and WiFi was good Be advised, this host will want a £250 damage deposit fee on your credit card, then a £10 (ADMIN FEE), just to give you the entrance codes, in still waiting for my £250 back 9 days later, Access up to the apartment on 2nd floor is up filthy stairs covered in dog hairs, wallpaper hanging off and dog in 1st floor apartment and it stinks.. A proper crack den.. Not been hoovered in ages... I'm still staying in this area for work but I won't be using this place again, not for me these high fees and crack den staircase.
- James (7/5): Great value sta in a very under rated location. - Absolutely amazing location. Quick walk down to the beach and pier, equally short walk into town for supermarket, trains, buses.
The apartment itself is well decorated, clean and tidy.
Saltburn beach is very under rated, long with soft sand. Parking can be a little chaotic, but there is plenty within a short walk.
Very minor point, the entrance to the main building is a little shabby.
- David (1/5): Bad - Nothing Enforced damage waiver insurance, front door insecure, dirty stairway, small dirty stairs a trip/fall risk, multiple fire risks - no fire extinguishers or fire blankets, poor quality mattress, no welcoming note, dirty chipped cups, no sea view from settee or bed, balcony in kitchen unusable and no view,
- Mary (8/5): It was generally great. - The property was clean, modern and comfortable. Great location near the sea front and also close to the town centre. Need a towel rail in the bathroom. A scourer for washing up. A blind or curtain for the living room.
- Louis (1/5): Hidden charges apply: £10 "transaction fee", £250 deposit not returned until 8 days after checkout - Location Scruffy/dirty front yard, dirty stairwell.
- Szerena (9/5): A great location and a comfortable stay. - A great location, comfortable stay and easy to access. The entrance is a bit dated and can be off putting.
- Andrea (1/5): Flat perfect , host and stay and the building very disappointing. - The flat is clean ,modern and comfortable. But the building , garden , front door , hallways and stairs are very scruffy , damp and run down. Very offputting. I had no hot water for most of my stay ; other reviewers have had this problem before. I booked through host and stay. Never again. Their systems are over complicated , I received 18 emails during the process and they are hopeless at resolving problems. The whole insurance/deposit system is a rip-off and it has taken me 13 days to receive the refund of my deposit , despite their t and c saying refund in 7 days.
- Susan (10/5): Value, beautiful apartment with fab views - Perfect location
Perfect price
Inside property, beautiful decor, extremely clean, comfy, modern interior
Close to beach and amenities. Liked everything.
- Kirsty (5/5): Passable - Good location Had no hot water for the entire stay, contacted host & stay but unfortunately the problem was not fixed.
- Parth (7/5): Good -
- Falder (4/5): Interior ok outside and staircase shocking, unclean - Location after we found it Condition of the outside of the property and the old door entrance. Condition of the staircase was shocking the carpet was a trip hazard waiting to happen, 2 nails on each step held the torn carpet together. Wallpaper hanging off walls, dog hairs covered the carpets hadn't been hoovered or cleaned for months
- John (10/5): Apartment clean plenty of space and good location - Self catering Everything was excellent
- Boothinho (9/5): Superb - Lovely location and the room was as described, clean and had everything we needed. 3rd floor room wasn't ideal with a dog and when we use Host and Stay again (which we will!), we will look for a ground floor apartment. The lobby, hallways and stairs were horrible, old wallpaper and paint falling away, damp etc, which is the only thing that lets the experience down a little. If that was tidied up like the room is, would be 10/10
- Alison (3/5): Disappointing, and not sorted out . Which spoiled a well earned break. - The property was well furnished. But we had no hot water and heating for the full stay which was unacceptable I have put a complaint in to host and stay, which I am waiting for a satisfactory outcome. There was no heating or hot water for the full stay. The support from host and stay was below standard
- Sharon (8/5): Nice apartment don't let the review put you off if you are fit and don't mind the stairs - The Sea view and it was very quiet. The apartment was nice but I don't think it was worth what we paid. Just needs a bit of attention. The 3 flights of stairs, the state of the hallway was in need of cleaning and decorating but the apartment wasn't what the stairs showed it was OK once inside. The balcony we didn't use because it just looked out onto the flats across and no sea view. The sink in bathroom was too high also mirror in bedroom. There's no freezer and it looked like it didn't fit in the space. The bed was noisy and the mattress was lumpy also they were single ones I'm guessing was easier to get up the stairs? No where to sit and do hair had to stand at the mirrors which for a 5ft 3 person I couldn't see bottom of hair. Had to use the one in the hallway. We won't stay again but just because the stairs and not having anywhere to sit out unless climbing 3 flights of stairs with a bad back.
- Sarah (8/5): Very good -
- Mark (5/5): Not the usual standard from Host and stay - Entrance, parking and heating
- S (9/5): Superb -
- Kirsty (9/5): lively apartment will be back - location and cleanliness the hallway / entrance needed some TLC
- Faye (4/5): we made the best of a short stay Saltburn is lovely and worth a visit but 52 Emerald road definitely not - The actual flat is as seen on advertising photos The out side is rundown the front garden in a poor state weeds, rubbish broken light fittings, no outside light, front door in poor repair, entrance hall run down peeling yellowed wallpaper, badly fitting stair carpet, rubbish on the floor etc. The boiler was switched off on our arrival when we did get it on the thermostat didnāt seem to regulate the temperature of the heating and the hot water was scalding hot!! dangerously so!!
- Jennifer (5/5): Passable -
- Carmin (8/5): Very good - Great location apartment had everything needed . Tv did not work but had netflix . Main entrance and shared staircase needed upgrading
- Jane (5/5): Passable - The flat was just ok The entance and stair carpet was poor, it really was a poor first impression.
The company asking for an extra £25 after booking was sharp practice.
- Graham (9/5): Lovely apartment but windows need a clean and heating needs sorting - Thermostat didnāt work so no heating or hot water
- Patrick (9/5): Superb - The location is excellent The stairs to the upper/attic accomodation were
Very steep and therefore carrying up and down with your belongings were a little difficult.
- Hannah (8/5): Very good -
- Alison (4/5): Disappointing -
- Anthony (9/5): Really enjoyed the stay, great location. - Great location, near to beach and town centre, within walking distance of good restaurants and bars. Couldn't get TV signal on one night, coffee machine didn't seem to work.
Outside very scruffy needs attention. Entrance hall and stairs to first floor, wallpaper coming off under the window, stair carpet is loose in places.
- Philip (8/5): Very good - The apartment itself was great and well equiped The outside of the building and the stairway were in poor decorative state leading to a disappointing first impression.
- Olivia (9/5): Emerald Hideaway Flat C - Very cosy apartment which was beautifully decorated and in a fantastic location (close to both the sea front and plenty of bars / restaurants / shops). Facilities were great, there was everything you would need and tea / coffee / sugar/ milk / shower supplies were provided. The building itself (leading up to the apartment) wasn't as well kept and the stairs were very narrow and difficult to walk up / down. Cupboards were already full with stuff so there was no where to put any shopping and the handwash in the bathroom was watered down.
- Natalie (9/5): Superb - Beautifully decorated. Lovely location. Pet friendly. There was only one fork in the cutlery drawer. Minor issue I know, and as luck would have it I was on my own as my partner couldnāt make it. Had to re-tune tv several times. Nothing major obviously, just little things. On the whole had a well needed break in a lovely apartment. Would definitely come back x
- Sandra (7/5): Good -
- Thoseby (9/5): Brilliant locatation and quality accomodation - Perhaps extra security on the balcomy as bars quite wide for a small dog!
- Clare (9/5): Superb - I liked the great location and view of the sea. The property was easy to find and just down the street from the train station and town centre.
Modern and minimal.
