Guest Reviews
- Rosemary (8/5): Ideal location but needs some work - Very spacious . Lovely comfy bed. Fantastic shower room. Great location. We didn’t realise how close we were to the harbour. Busy road outside but we didn’t hear the traffic. Lots of restaurants we recommended the vault for Sunday lunch and the passage to India for a curry Dog hairs all over the carpets. Loose sockets on the walls. Door handles hanging . Lack of utensils in the kitchen. No frying pan. Bathroom door doesn’t shut properly and you can see scratches from a dog in the door. Old worn door mat in entrance
- MISS LINDA (2/5): Dissapointed bad experience wont be coming back - Second time at the den ,first time enjoyed it but our second visit was very disappointing overall cleanliness was poor this time ,dog hairs on the cooking bench all over the couches , absolutely terrible smell of sewage drains , loads of tiny flies in and around the toilet which made bathing and showering impossible needs a whole new regime bad plus no Internet tv for 4 days no signal had watch YouTube to get by . Running around upstairs like banging as if it was a mad house block your ears . Alot of everything to be honest
- Hornby (7/5): - Privacy, location, space It wasn't very clean. It looked it but inside cupboards etc had been clearly missed by cleaners
- Linda (10/5): A fantastic location brilliant lovely amenities exceptional - Everything was fantastic best place we have ever stayed definitely visiting again Nothing dissapoints here excellent property to vacation too
- Jacqueline Foster (1/5): Extremely disappointing - The location was ok. The garden was enclosed for our dogs. Unfortunately the neighbours dog kept getting in and doing its business on our side. It was quite dated but had potential. The place hadn't been cleaned. I have taken photos!
The lid to the macerater was'nt there so the smell of waste seeped into the living room. The door handles were broken and the doors stuck shut, we got locked in the bedroom and had to force the door open. The kitch floor had a leaking pipe underneath. We got so fed up we came home early and i ended up with a stomach bug 🤢

- Tracey (6/5): Ok for 3 nights - booked The Den for as 3 night stay in Whitby in February. Instructions for check in were clear and arrived in the morning of check in. The flat is a basement flat in a 3 storey house, on the main road into Whitby, parking at the rear ok for a small family car, anything bigger will struggle, although their is parking on the busy road. Flat had a funky smell when we arrived, think this was due to wet weather and being a basement, we left the front doors open for a while and the smell improved. The den is in a good walking location to the main town app 10 mins, we left the car parked and walked everywhere. As the flat is a basement flat it doesn't get a lot of light only windows are the front french doors and a window that is sealed in the bedroom. The Den was clean enough and the kitchen fairly well equipped.
We found the bed to be very hard and low and as it was a double with only a small double duvet, the cover wasn't really big enough. The room is big enough for a king size which would make the world of difference. We found the boiler which is in the bedroom to also be very noisy, when it came on at 5am, it doesn't need to come on at that time in a holiday flat. We had issues making the television work, although we followed all the instructions, we did advise the Host and Stay people they didn't seem interested, we unplugged everything which seemed to reset it and then it worked. There is a good selection of cds and books in the flat.
Also beware of the fridge it freezes everything, including a can of lemonade, and milk in the door.

- Jayne (2/5): A very ‘Dirty’ Den - The location was good It was extremely dirty. I did complain at the time of my stay. Dirty skirting, filthy behind the toilet. Food splashed walls and previous occupants food waste on floor by the kitchen bin. Kitchen bin absolutely filthy
- Jason (3/5): Disappointment - How it was 10 minutes away from centre The property smelt damp as soon as you entered. The toilet didn’t hardly flush and the sink took a long time to drain. And the toilet was leaking and smelt we couldn’t take any more so decided to go home a day early as it was that bad and my daughter was very upset. There was cobwebs in the door frames in the kitchen and hallway
- MARIE (8/5): The Den was lovely and completely met our needs. -
- Janet (6/5): Was ok not worth 400 pound - Parking round back in an area that's a great challenge couldn't get at front all days I was there not enough information regarding were key was bolder in bedroom should be in kitchen very noisy and a strange smell asentering property
- Graham (9/5): -
- Ronald (9/5): Value for money short walk to ammenties - Close to ammenaties No hand rail by the out side steps, especially as steps are steep
- Tina (9/5): - Spacious, great shower, good location and parking.
- Peter Davidson (8/5): Fantastic stay - The Den - Whitby- The basement apartment was just what we were looking for and suited our needs perfectly. Ideal location just a short walk from the cinder track to walk our Geryhounds in the morning and similar distance down Bagdale into Whitby. Great communication when changing our check in time due to a missed train and during a slight hiccup with the key code. The apartment itself is very spacious and tastefully decorated, well provisioned for all your needs weather you want to be really self catering or out and about, shower very good, kitchen has all amenities to make a full meal, very much liked the couch in the bedroom, hotel style complimentary tea, coffee , milk, soap and shower lotions were a nice touch and very kindly apriciated after our late check in. The only small constructive criticism I have is that it could do with a deep clean/ bit of TLC, edges and ledges and things like the toilet cistern needs attention, the cooker knobs can't be read, it worked very well but a little notice with a picture from online with what the settings are would be handy and alot safer now that they've all rubbed off. Certainly wouldn't stop me from staying again mind and My wife is already looking at booking the same apartment over the winter months. Thanks for a lovely stay!
- Lesley (5/5): Whitby Great! The Den, not so much - The best thing about The Den was the location; a quick walk (less than 10 minutes) into the centre of Whitby and just around the corner from The Cinder Trail which is perfect for dog walking. The bedroom and lounge were spacious and the bed was very comfortable. The shower was lovely and powerful and hot too! It was good to have full control of the heating. The TV (once we worked out how to use it) was fab and would have been great on rainy days. Fortunately the weather was great throughout our stay. Communication with Host and Stay was very easy - they answered any messages promptly and were friendly and approachable. I contacted Host and Stay on our return and gave them our feedback in advance of leaving feedback here They responded immediately with promises to attend to all the issues raised. I would like to think this will happen. On arrival we had to change a lightbulb that was not working. The flat was not very clean and there were clear areas where cleaning had never happened, particularly around the edges of rooms and the bathroom. Storage facilities were poor - nowhere suitable in the bedroom to put clothes; just a couple of quirky cabinets that were not fit for purpose. There was a sofa in the bedroom, which was of no use and could better be replaced by clothes storage. There were some very cheap clothes hangers in a cupboard in the hallway which also contained random items of bedding. The bathroom was very small and poorly ventilated, which meant it was always damp and there was mould growing on the grout. There was no toilet roll holder! Instead the toilet roll was balanced on the sink. Also no shelving for toiletries. The lighting throughout the property was basic and rather dull. The lava lamp was broken and there was a curious lighting "tree" in the bedroom. More lamps in the lounge would make it cosier and more attractive as an option for staying in on rainy days. The kitchen was also basic, with no dishwasher and a bad drain smell coming from the sink. While communication with Host and Stay was easy, they did tend to "overcommunicate", sending us emails (and a phone call) every day for at least a week before our stay and even while we were in The Den. These were generally trying to sell us something and their frequency meant I mostly ignored them. Any important information was in danger of getting lost. I am not sure I would opt for Host and Stay properties in the future.
- Lorraine (3/5): Very dissatisfied customer - Location The property smelt, we had to buy air fresheners. It was full if cobwebs and spiders. The pans were greasy, we had to wash everything. The PAT testing was out of date.
This was managed by Host & Stay. I have had a dispute with them since August. We accidentally shut the door key in the apartment, the owner who lived above could have let us in, but Host & Stay had borrowed his spare key and not returned in. The owner was fantastic and ver helpful.
⅗Host and Stay within an hour took £75 out or my bank account, which I am still disputing. All they did was send a maintenance man round to open the door. Just keep coming up with excuses that they are looking into it. I will never use this company again.

- ANDREW (9/5): Loved it. All we wanted - Fabulous location and value for money. Slighly tricky parking and unloading car.
- karen (10/5): We had a brilliant time in Whitby the apartment was in a good spot 5 minutes into the centre we had taken our dog with u - It was in a good location Cobwebs
- Georgina (10/5): 2nd visit here and we will be back! Highly recommended. - Spacious, clean, well equipped apartment, just a short walk away from the town. Dog friendly and the garden at the front is a bonus as well as the parking space. Fab shower too! Nothing!
- Philip BASFORD (8/5): Review of the 'Den' Whitby - We liked the size of the property, the kitchen was an added bonus, you could live in this property, we enjoyed our stay in the Den. Everything was good, nothing to complain about.
- Kathleen (7/5): - All on one level No safe area for the dogs
- Anndrene (6/5): Nice location , plenty of useful facilities - Less than 10 minutes at a steady pace to the town centre, everything you could need for your stay, bedding and towels were nice and soft and clean , spacious apartment, just need a little tlc ie fresh lick of paint and attention to cleaning detail to avoid any issues, free parking behind the property is always a bonus, would stay again if my issues were resolved No mention of the very VERY steep hill to reach the property
Long dark hairs on toilet on arrival, ( we are both short and grey) and the tiling around the shower REALLY needs the grouting cleaning properly ( looked very bad and dirty)
- Helen (8/5): We had a lovely stay and the location was ideal. Be happy to return. Great having private parking - Great location, liked the garden view from the door. Think the garden chairs need replacing. They were covered in green stuff. The toilet macerator was struggling a bit.I was worried some previous guest had stuck something down it they shouldn't. But we managed ok and host said they would look into that. It may just need a bit of tweaking. The front door does not feel secure.
- Tim (7/5): Overall a great stay with niggles - Location of the property was excellent in relation to the town, and street parking was easy enough to find.
Property looked and was quirky, which is my sort of thing. Lots of room to move about with plenty of seating options. All mod cons seemingly provided at a reasonable rate. Shower worked well.
I enjoyed our stay overall and enjoyed revisiting Whitby. Very strong smell of drains and damp on entering the property, which is no doubt partly down to the age of the building and the use of a macerator on the waste system, but being a basement it needs more air circulation to remove the smells. Everywhere you looked had cobwebs and grime in corners where missed in cleaning, which really let it down. Flooring is not particularly clean either in most areas, especially lounge carpet... a laminate floor might be an improvement on the dark brown carpet. Grey sofa in lounge had large odd stain on it. Hot water is plentiful once pressure is achieved, but slow to reach the taps and the bathroom sink struggles to empty due to possibly the macerator again. Flooring between bedroom and bathroom needs sorting out as it squeaks loudly, potentially waking anyone else trying to sleep if you need the loo in the night. Cooker markings all but rubbed off so a bit of a gamble in its use. Could do with hooks on back of bathroom door and better lighting in lounge.
Overall, the state of the property is tatty and in need of some tlc as it looks tired, which really lets it down, and yet it wouldn't take much to sort these niggles out.
- Roberts (5/5): The Den - Everything there that was needed. Not far from town. Front doors not very secure, cooker no instructions and symbols around dials rubbed off so couldnt tell what temperature oven was.
- Eddie (6/5): Pleasant -
- Emilypaws (3/5): Poor - the location and size. The cleanliness of the apartment was awful and the smell from the bathroom was terrible.
- Tracey (8/5): Very good - Nice & quiet, despite being on a main road. Enclosed garden for the dogs & a lovely shower. Very well equipped kitchen & an easy to operate TV!
Lovely little getaway. Personally, the bed was a bit hard for me but my partner slept like a baby!
- James (9/5): Excellent location, clean and recommended. - The Den was clean, in an excellent location and if not for problems with the cooker would have had an even better feedback. We hope to return next year to the Den. Other than problems with the cooker, the stay was excellent. We have no hesitation in recommending the Den.
- Martin (7/5): Pleasant place in good location, but self catering equipment not so good. - Great location. Easy to walk into the town centre. Bed was comfortable, television was good and plenty of seating. Not so good for self catering. The pots and pans were not very clean, and some of the equipment wasn't really usable - eg the frying pan was bent and stained. Some of the pans didn't have flat bottons and were not easy to use on a halogen hob.
The lighting in the main room could have been better. There is no light near the dining table so you have to eat in the semi dark.
- Bernard (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely flat
Comfy bed
Well stocked kitchen Steps to the property challenging for person with walking difficulties
- Sheree (2/5): Cold bank holiday weekend 😎 - It's spacious has all facilities you need to stay, Where to Starr.. without doing a long review...smelt damp, there were dog hairs on furniture we sat on and were covered in white dog hair.we arrived Friday late 8.45 pm may bank holiday it was cold couldn't get heating to work so 2 days later several emails to company we didn't like to mess with boiler but it was pretty cold so pressed a few buttons eventually got heating on,when a knock at the door the owner who lives above was so apologetic Chris was so sorry for inconvenience I told him about dog hair too,the place looks lovely on photos but in my view the whole place needs decorating, facilities are good everyone has there own opinions I agree but I wouldn't stay again it spoilt my weekend away as I had to sit with my coat on to keep warm or get hot showers to warm up.
- Kevin (7/5): A very nice place to stay, but in much need of a good clean - The beds and couch were very comfortable, the shower was fantastic. The decor was great and the place was very welcoming. The location to the town was great, only being a few minutes walk was ideal. The place was in need of a much needed deep clean. There was dust on almost every surface and skirting boards, cobwebs in almost every corner and ceiling. The toilet seat was loose and moved about when sat on it. The front door mat was curled up and was a trip hazard. The pots and pans were badly scratched and made them almost unusable to cook on, and it was a struggle to get hot water in the kitchen and resorted to boiling the kettle to wash up. Smoke alarm glued to shelf without a battery in it. The noise from the people above us and their dog barking was particularly annoying at times.
- Martin (6/5): It was okay, not great, not a disaster. - Location Wasn’t as clean or as inviting as the photos suggest, could do with a bit of TLC throughout and parking is difficult, certainly couldn’t use the parking around the back
- Maud (7/5): Good - The whole place No instructions for microwave and cooker
- Kevin (10/5): It suited our personal requirements perfectly. - The location was fine A radio would of been nice
- Nessa (10/5): Great stay home from home very relaxing - It was a home from home absolutely brilliant There was nothing not to like
- Karen (9/5): Lovely home from home close to Whitby train station. - Was welcoming, spotlessly clean and had everything you needed for a pleasant, enjoyable stay. Loved the retro accessories and quirky bits and bobs dotted around. Have the exact same shower at home and love the rain shower. Loved that you were left to your own devices but someone was on hand if you needed anything. Not really a dislike but the steps at the entrance to the garden were quite slippery when it rained with the fallen leaves no helping so maybe just a warning on the website or small sign on the gate would give people the heads up.
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- Martin (6/5): Pleasant -
- Linda (4/5): The flat wasn't very comfortable and not very inviting - The shower Most of it
- Sharon (10/5): Stayed here a few times now. Lovely memories of my mam who has now passed away. Find the location excellent and the apa - Location and size of property with garden. Property has everything. Maybe a freshen up with decoration.
