Guest Reviews
- Joanne (8/5): Great location and comfortable room (in a Privelege room) but the hotel needs restoration work - The location is excellent. It is so central and directly opposite the cathedral. There is also parking (£15 per night). I had to call reception to request a room clean at 4pm and I was informed that they don't clean the rooms every day unless you ask - that was very unusual!
- Robert (10/5): Fantastic location Extremely helpful outgoing friendly staff -
- Linda (10/5): Lovely stay we throughly enjoyed our time in Winchester - The location and room was comfortable, staff friendly It was all good
- Howard (8/5): Nice spot with cathedral next door - Location and size of room. Cathedral view. Comfy bed.
- Mohandas (8/5): Good Traditional hotel in a small desirable city - All good, standard room 207, that had everything.
King Lounge & bar were very good and the setting typically old very British style.
Excellent location close to all restaurants, shops etc. Just one...bath tub level was very high from floor.
Charging £15 per hour beyond 11 am check out, was very stiff, but understandable.
- Michael (6/5): Pleasant -
- Julie (10/5): Exceptional - The hotel was situated in a great spot, near to resturants ,shops ,and best off all our room 145 overlooked the cathedral ,parking was only £15 for 24hrs ,giving us plenty off time to have a good look around ,will defo be returning Nothing
- Gill (6/5): A place to rest, clean, no frills. - Dated room. Old, dated.
- Louise (4/5): Room was very poor, cleanliness was poor and limited uk sockets in the room - The location was great. Hotel was very run down. Room was unclean, huge cobwebs in corners of room. Stifling hot and provided the most basic fan. Plug sockets were limited, the lamps had their own plugs that didn’t match the UK sockets
- Neil (8/5): Another good stay at our preferred Winchester hotel - Location very central yet quiet, apart from antisocial behaviour that seems to be sadly on the increase in Winchester. Spacious and comfortable room with huge bed and great shower. Small details like bottled water in room for filling kettle, l never use tap water. Local attractions and visitor information usually provided.
- Julie (9/5): Our stay was ideal for our visit to family. We will be using the hotel again. - Only had breakfast on one day but it was very good Workmen we’re working in the adjacent area
- Stephen (8/5): Great Central Location Next To Cathedral - Superb location next to cathedral with view from bedroom window. Close to town centre with loads of restaurants and pleasant walks nearby. On-site parking available. Breakfast at £17.50 was unacceptably expensive!!
- Andreas (9/5): Superb - Very central and quiet location, spacious rooms, good breakfast buffet, lounge area, car park available
- Gerald (9/5): Superb - The area of the hotel was close to everything. Very well positioned. Nice view of cathedral from the room. Nice size room. Staff was especially nice, helpful and friendly. Loved the cookies, coffee and tea. Breakfast was very nice, however not included in our room. Our bathroom was large enough and well appointed, however water spills out of the shower every time and causes mildew and mold in shower, on tub sides and grout in tile floor. Bleach or cleaner with bleach in it, such as Clorox Bath cleaner with bleach. Only bleach will kill the mold and mildew as it can make people sick.
- David (5/5): functional. - The location was central to Winchester, I feel that alone was the only good point.
To be fair the bed was very comfortable. The say there is no parking at the hotel, however this is a car park under the hotel with a sign "hotel parking"
The hotel for the cost and pictures on booking.com didnt reflect the stay we thought we'd have.
The breakfast staff unhelpful, the coffee was like rocket fuel and undrinkable, the breakfast selection was always missing an item or two.
- Mark (8/5): Enjoyed our stay ,great location , would recommend - Historical themed room was nice Parking fee
- Nichole (1/5): DREADFUL - Great location Absolutely dreadful room and bathroom where the water won't go down the sink due to hair and crap trapped.. Toilet was brown along with bath mat.GROSS floors are sticky...needs a good clean!! Definitely would not recommend.
- Andrew (10/5): Exceptional -
- Darren (3/5): Disappointing - The view would have been perfect if it wasn’t for the bird poo all over the window. Great location. Room was horrendously filthy and unsanitary.
- Andrew (9/5): Superb -
- Anonymous (7/5): The bedroom would benefit from air conditioning -
- Huw (5/5): Passable -
- Richard (9/5): Would consider again especially room with view of cathedral at a time when the trees are not blocking the view - Location for visiting Winchester is excellent A little tired and dated but clean and tidy
- Shara (8/5): Very good - The hotel is in a great location. It's clean & the bed was super comfy. The bathroom desperately needs to be modernised as well as the ancient TV with it's remote control keys that kept getting stuck down!
- Steve (8/5): One night stop-over mid journey. - Location, nicely fitted out ground floor areas, accessible parking. Dinner menu quite limited options, otherwise all good.
- Moira (5/5): It wasn’t worth the money - Location All very tired
- Moira (5/5): Ok not really worth the money - Location The room was a bit smelly a urine smell
Toilet was badly stained and all a bit worn but bed was comfortable
- William (9/5): Great location with beautiful view of cathedral - Great location with beautiful view of cathedral Nothing really
- Anonymous (9/5): Superb -
- Mark (8/5): First stay, won't be the last - will choose a larger room next time. - Air conditioning in the room was welcome especially as it was a compact double. a view of the cathedral was fabulous. some of the complimentary soaps and conditioners were empty, there was an annoying amount of noise from plumbing - room 227. overall a good stay but minor details detracted from the overall experience.
- Woolgar (7/5): Good -
- Abbey (3/5): Over priced and disappointing - Location Most uncomfortable mattress I have ever slept on, waited a long time for staff to appear for check in, room was dusty and very small (not a double at all), tv also did not work
- Anthony (8/5): Very quiet room - It was clean Nothing
- Edmond (7/5): Good - Location No air conditioning and couldn’t open windows fully. Very hot
- Hepworth (8/5): Very good -
- Laura (4/5): Very central but not great for comfort, cleanliness or a good night's sleep - Central location Booking.com says "About this property"... "Comfortable Accommodations...air-conditioning..." implying all rooms are air-conditioned as standard. The room did not have air-con (and yes, it was a warm, muggy night). So, window was open over night - awake at 5.30 onwards from all the noise from the street below; bin lorries and reversing sirens, you get my drift...
The armchair in the room was stained and had a layer of dust on it and the pillows were cheap quality and not comfortable...not very nice at all...
- Angela (8/5): Just right for our visit - Perfect position, comfy bed Furniture a little shabby and bathroom needed updating
- Liam (7/5): Good -
- Dan (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (5/5): Passable -
- Richard (8/5): Very good - Location excellent
Friendly and helpful staff Noise early morning from neighbouring businesses clearing their rubbish. Our windows had to be open because there was no air con and it was a hot night.
- Anthea (7/5): Good -
- Anthony (7/5): Well located with friendly staff but hotel tatty and expensive - Great location. Staff very helpful. Lovely view from the cathedral side rooms. The hotel is tatty badly in need of a full renovation as although they have replaced some furnitute much of it is still damaged, bathrooms are in need of retiling and walls of the common parts full of cracks and in places mould and damp visible. An easier fix is the bookign system which is confusing and makes it very difficult to find the best rate for the rooms hwihc are inconsistently described - the new branded website is hopelessly bad.
- Sally (8/5): Very good - Location and staff Room too hot and a night club near by so couldn't open the windows as too noisy
- Mike (5/5): Passable - Location No air conditioning. Opened windows mean you hear all night revelers...all night.
- Helen (3/5): Poor -
- Dunning (9/5): Superb - The location was excellent, the staff very helpful, easy check in ,
- Caryl (5/5): Ideal location but hotel needs refurbishment desperately. - Location was excellent being in the centre of the town. My partner has disability problems but everything we needed was in walking distance. Bed was comfortable and spotless. Bathroom clean and refurbished. Staff were helpful and friendly particularly the young lady on the bar. No fridge in room and overlooking road works outside. Carpeting throughout the hotel needs to be updated. Breakfast was very over priced at £17,50 per person so went elsewhere.
- Anne (8/5): Very good - Excellent location. Room clean and spacious. Staff helpful and welcoming. Really annoying music playing on the Sunday morning in the breakfast and reception area. Music should be ‘background’ and relaxing.
- Deborah (8/5): Comfortable and clean. Great location - Stayed in Privilege room. Great location and really big comfy bed. The room was large and had extras like robe, slippers, coffee machine. Yes, furniture was old and took us a while to work out lighting and air con. Couldn’t see Cathedral as trees obscured view but not hotel fault
- Fiona (8/5): Very good -
- Peter (6/5): Pleasant -
- Martina (7/5): Good for days with no rubish collection, city centre location, clean - Rooms are good size and clean, very comfortable beds. Breakfast was nice, nothing out of ordinary. Good location in centre, bit far from train station (20 mins walking) but fine if you took taxi or Uber. Nice view of cathedral in the restaurant, but not all rooms have the view available- check before you travel which way your room is facing avoid Market Lane side. Staff friendly. Standard bathroom, OK facilities e.g. tea/coffee. I like the pictures and tapestries decorations keeping with the medieval theme of the cathedral nearby. The hotel it self is ugly building from 70ties or 80es, we couldn't find the main entrance as it was hidden behind the car park and the hotel itself looked like a some kind of storage facility. Inside it need a lot of work, carpets were secured with duct tapes almost everywhere and the furniture was tired and the whole look seen better times in the past. We stayed in twin room which was above the main entrance in Market Lane- opposite Travelodge and that was the main problem, as there was huge traffic of delivery lorries, rubbish collections including shattering glass bottles to bins constantly per whole night! It was Monday, so maybe other nights are fine. The lorries and vans have been coming and going and reversing until 2 am and started again at 5 am and didn't stopped until we left. We could not close the window as it was too hot and there is no air con. Needs investment and improve the whole layout (bit of maize of stairs and corridors) and better use of the amazing view for the cathedral.
- Hayman (8/5): Quiet and comfortable - Stopped here for one night before setting off to walk the South Downs Way. Very comfy bed and quiet. Set in a wonderful location next to the cathedral A bit expensive but it was a Friday night
- Stacey (1/5): Very poor - Very unclean
Uncomfortable bed and bedding dirty and scratchy
Half of the lights worked fan and aircon heater unit also didn’t work
Unclean bathroom
Dirty
Tissue in tissue box!
No milk or sugar
Dirty limescale’s kettle still with water in’
Windows dirty to touch can hardly
Open them
Rude staff
Requested an earlier check in but that didn’t happen
And we had to wait another three hours! In 32 degree heat?!
Reception staff were not able to get us any water and rudely told us to
Go to the bar when we got to the bar no one was there had to wait Very unclean

- Ian (9/5): Superb -
- Ana (8/5): Pleasant stay. - Only stayed one night. Was happy with the hotel and staff was friendly and efficient. Nothing.
- Anonymous (8/5): Lovely view of the cathedral, perfect central location. - Location is perfect, staff great and view of The Cathedral magic! The decor and hotel needs decorating and updating (which I guess you know)
- Linda (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marc (5/5): Passable -
- Anonymous (9/5): Perfect 🤩 - Perfect location ! , staff were very
Professional ,extremely friendly and very helpful, we stayed in a basic double with the cathedral view which was perfect for us , hotel is a little bit dated but very clean and we would definitely stay again 😁
- Stuart (9/5): Superb -
- Simon (7/5): It was ideal for our purposes. - Its location was fabulous. Price was very reasonable. Proximity to town centre and available parking. The bathroom was not easy for older clients. Hotel generally a bit tired but not unacceptable.
- Hannah (5/5): Dated, noisy but fine for one night - The property is very dated, windows not doubled glazed so it was noisy, we were next to the laundry room, staff were very loud from early morning. Location was good and thee bed was comfy, the bathroom needed updating.
- Susan (9/5): I would go back. Very clean and comfortable - Spacious room, airy, peaceful view of cathedral. Fridge and comfy chairs in room. Bathroom lights didn't all work
- Dayana (4/5): Disappointing -
- Callum (1/5): Dirty room and bedding - N/A Dirty room. The pillow had an eyelash attached and make up from previous guest so indicated that the bedding wasn’t changed between guests.
- Nermeen (6/5): Excellent location, clean, friendly but VERY tired. - I liked the warmth of the receptionist and the quick response to any queries we had. The location is excellent. I had lunch at the hotel and it was quite good. the sheets on the bed were clean and in general cleanliness was very good. I had read reviews that said the rooms and spaces were "tired" but I was not prepared for just how tired the corridor leading to our room and furnishing in the room were. There should be an effort to quickly improve on peeling wall paper and paint, very old bathroom fixtures and furnishings that are definitely past their best.
- Neil (10/5): Exceptional - Locat
- Terence (3/5): Poor - Central Place is a bit tired and in need of a refurbished
- Prestage (8/5): Overall a relaxing stay. - Large room, beautiful view of the Cathedral Money needs to be spent on upgrading rooms. The sofa in our room was heavily stained and in the bathroom the grouting was coming out above the bath.
- Chris (7/5): Good -
- R (8/5): Great location for Winchester - Great location. Clean and comfortable rooms Nothing really
- Stephen (5/5): Passable -
- Samuel (7/5): Good -
- William (6/5): Ok - Nice staff Tired property. Could do with a refresh
- Suzanne (8/5): Very good -
- Julie (9/5): Good size rooms with comfy beds in centre of town. - Rooms were good size with ensuites. Comfy beds. Close to centre of town & restaurants. Next to Cathedral. Paid parking on site. Nothing
- Gary (10/5): Exceptional - 1 minute walk at most to the main town and Cathedral.
Absolutely loved the location.
Will be back in July. Nothing
- Rhian92 (8/5): Very good -
- Anonymous (7/5): Good -
- Hugh (9/5): Hotel is quite run down in areas but quiet, clean, comfortable, staff excellent and location superb - Location superb, staff friendly, quiet, clean and comfortable. Drinks tray not the best, fresh milk and decent coffee would be good.
- Kuldeep (8/5): Very good -
- Sue (9/5): Brilliant location and fabulous view. We had a fab stay. - Fantastic location and the view from our room was brilliant. Room was bigger than expected and we even had a four poster bed. Nothing really. A couple more tea bags maybe 🤣.
- Donna (6/5): Pleasant - Liked the large bed, very comfy.
Room clean and tidy. Room was too hot- need air con. Would not book again because of this.
- Sharon (4/5): Disappointing - The location was fine, close to town Being in a room over the carpark, bins being used, drug users underneath shouting, cars revving day and night. Being told we didn't have breakfast when that was the reason we booked it. Hotel is very dated and very underused compared to our previous stays. Won't be staying again.
- P.p (10/5): Exceptional - The location is great, just a couple of minutes to the cathedral and very close to the main town. Very friendly staff as well. Would definitely recommend!
- Chorltongirl (10/5): Exceptional - Great location, friendly, nice bed, big tv A little tired and a bit more care would be good eg attaching the plug chain to the bath, removal of limescale, making it easy to find (its the Wessex Hotel apparently)
- Uddhav (10/5): Amazing - Amazing vibe
- James (1/5): Not good - Spent ages looking for Cathedral View only to be told the hotel was actually the Wessex, no apologie from reception, plus pay extra for breakfast and extra to park car The name on 5he hotel
- Shantanu (10/5): City Center and Cathedral View - Cathedral view from my window was amazing. It is just 2 minutes walk. We had breakfast which can be pre-booked online and had a good variety including fresh fruit juice.
- Oliver (10/5): Exceptional - An unforgettable stay right in the heart of Winchester! The view of the cathedral from my room was breathtaking and made the whole experience feel extra special. The interiors were classy yet cozy, and I loved being able to step right out and explore the charming old town. A truly perfect place for a relaxing escape.
- Gilbert (10/5): Exceptional -
- Tiana (9/5): Superb -
- Patricia (8/5): Very good -
- Neil (5/5): Could be so much better - Location Tired decor, room decor and upkeep
- Barbara (9/5): Superb -
- Nettie (8/5): Very good - Location was excellent. More milk , only enough for one cup. dispensers in bathroom hard to use
- Mark (8/5): It’s the Wessex Hotel - Hotel is a bit tired, but was actually a nice room and perfectly comfortable… we had great windows over looking the cathedral. Very odd that it is described as the ‘Winchester Cathedral View by Dancenter’ ..but is actually just the Wessex hotel.
Very confusing and we walked around for a while before going to ask the hotel reception if they could help!
- Muhammad (10/5): Fantastic stay thank you! - All of it, amazing stay! :-) But confusing as the hotel is called The Wessex
The water pressure was weird up on 2nd floor
Apart from that all very good!
