Guest Reviews
- Paul (9/5): Brilliant. - Size and location Room not air conditioned. Will be hot in summer.
- carol (10/5): Perfect - Wonderful greeting after a long walk with a glass of wine, thought the tuck cupboard was a nice touch . We had our meal on the best table in the restaurant , and the spa and heated swimming pool felt very luxurious . Breakfast really set us up for our walk to Eastbourne . Thank you

- Carol (10/5): A very special stay amidst the South Downs - Staff were excellent, and made us feel very welcome. Hotel was decorated beautifully throughout, with views of the garden and South Downs. Dinner and breakfast were delicious. There was nothing we didn’t like
- Heather (8/5): Very enjoyable - Room was comfortable and very clean.
There was a good choice of breakfast for all tastes. The bedroom we had was next to the kitchen and had a loud vent which started up around 6am in the morning.
- ANNETTE (10/5): Marvellous hotel. - Lovely location. The staff were excellent. Very friendly and efficient. Room spotless. Bed comfy. Yea and coffee making good. Spa area a treat. Nothing
- Barney (10/5): - heated pool...and all the spa facilities: superb.
- Αnna (10/5): - Το σπα, το δωματιο, το μπανιο του δωματιου, το κρεβατι, το πρωινο.
- Debra (10/5): Excellent - Excellent property with a amazing heated pool
Great upbeat stuff always happy to help
- Amanda (8/5): -
- CTP (6/5): - Breakfast was a disaster. Not enough food or plates. Bar service throughout stay was very slow.
- Verner (9/5): -
- Mark (9/5): -
- judy (10/5): Really enjoyable night with delicious dinner to celebrate a birthday - Lovely house in prime location
- HUGO (9/5): - Cadre de vie, lieu, piscine Pas d’air conditionné dans les chambres, température élevée dans les chambres
- Toby (9/5): Clean comfortable and welcoming - Glass of good wine on arrival and general welcome N/A
- julie (6/5): Pleaant but disappointed with lounge and dining areas - Staff and food were great No where to relax downstairs. No comfy chairs at all to sit and unwind. All hard chairs around the fireplace and lighting really bright. Seating in the dining room was quite crammed with people walking in between tables for the buffet.
- Naomi (9/5): Lovely. We would stay again although looking fo a good deal. We paid £200 a night which I thought was reasonable but go - Beautiful setting and lovely staff, relaxed atmosphere. Our room was very hot without the radiator on and during an April stay. I think it was near the boiler so worth checking.
- Annabel (8/5): - Delicious food, very friendly staff, beautiful grounds, lovely pool and very pretty interiors Not a lot of things not to like… but Very hard pillows
No safe in bedroom
Near quite a busy road
- Pearce (8/5): -
- Marielle (10/5): Sehr zu empfehlen - Sehr schönes Gebäude und sehr nettes und zuvorkommendes Personal. Sehr gutes Nachtessen und Frühstück Nichts
- Ksenia (10/5): Amazing hotel and service! Thank you! - Everything! It was so cozy and warm! Very nice hotel with great territory and amazing room, located in a beautiful town, this is really a hidden gem! Great breakfast! Nothing
- Susan (9/5): Super retreat met fijne wellness en pool. - De uitstraling, attente personeel, kleine attenties zoals glas wijn bij aankomst, snack kastje, kaplaarzen etc De high tea was voor 39 pound te karig en overpriced.
- Jordan (10/5): - The staff were extremely polite, friendly and helpful. The hotel and grounds are beautiful and in a great location for walks.
- John (10/5): A very pleasant stay -
- Claudia (10/5): -
- Amanda (9/5): A wonderfully relaxing and luxurious antidote to 6 hours of arduous hiking! - Very friendly staff! Glass of wine offered on arrival, staff went out of their way to help us. Breakfast was good - I was a little worried about the specialty coffee coming from a machine but it was good enough. I would have liked an oat milk latte but I managed without! The outdoor pool is a huge bonus - not too warm, not cold, and hydrotherapeutic. The only thing I would have changed is to have the steam room working from 8am (ie turned on earlier) and a separate robe for the spa so not wet when you need it in your room!
- Louise (9/5): -
- EVELYN (8/5): Beautiful hotel. Noisy neighbours. - Love the location. Nice touch the drinks at 4pm and 9pm. Beautiful breakfast. I could hear noise through the wall next door. I believe 3 young guys were there. Tv very loud. Should have complained at the time. Also beauty salon receptionist not very helpful as I really wanted to book a treatment. Also got locked out when swimming for about 10 mins. Main young girl on reception blew a bit hot amlnd cold, sometimes friendly sometimes ignoring. I was alone but paid same price as if for 2 people which is fine.
- Donald (9/5): Really good, we'll be back! -
- Angie (10/5): Great hotel, great staff, great location - simply the best! - Very comfortable rooms and excellent food. What really made it for us was the staff. Always greeted with a friendly smile and we were made to feel like nothing was too much trouble. There were lots of nice little touches like the welcome drink, goodies in the pantry and a huge supply of indoor and outdoor games. We travelled with our dog and they provided him with a super comfy bed and his own bag of treats. He was well catered for and was able to stay with us at meal times. We were able to walk the dog for miles along the river - which was just through the back gate. Alfriston is a really quaint and historic town with lots of artisan shops, restaurants and cafes. It is all on the doorstep which means our car stayed in the hotel car park for the duration of our stay!
Without a doubt, we will be coming back! Nothing to dislike!
- Pears (9/5): -
- Tomlinson (5/5): Would use the Spa for a day but not stay - The location Room very small even though it was a Heritage room
Tables not cleared at breakfast and ran out of hot water, oat milk.. hot food lukewarm
Shower in Spa flooded
- adam (10/5): Beautiful hotel in a lovely spot! - Everything was perfect, a great spot, the room was lovely and the beds were really comfortable. Breakfast was lovely and plentiful with good choices of cooked eggs, all the the staff very nice. The price for our dog was on the high side, the treats and dog bed a plus but he wasn't allowed in the restaurant which was a little disappointing. The Spa facilities were a bonus too, lunch was lovely and the hotel gardens beautiful.
- Annie (10/5): Would recommend this hotel to anyone - We had a wonderful stay at the Alfriston Hotel. The staff were all exceptional, particularly the lady on reception who was so kind to our 8 month old baby and made us feel so welcome when we arrived. We were walking the South Downs Way and she said "oh we love having walkers here." They offered us a complimentary glass of wine and gave us the most beautiful room. The whole hotel is beautiful. It seemed like everyone enjoyed working there, which really tells you a lot about a hotel. The spa was very relaxing. Breakfast was beautiful and walking around the grounds was so peaceful. I can't recommend this hotel enough
- Jenny Wallace (7/5): Nice place, but lacked a comfortable lounge for hotel guests to relax in, breakfast was limited. - The refurb, gardens and games on the lawn were lovely. Pleasant staff. There was a lack of comfortable sofa seating for hotel guests. A lounge exclusively for hotel guests would be appreciated as we didn't have any where to chill as a group. The pub seating was not very comfortable to sit with the family.
The complimentary breakfast selection was very limited with not much on offer.
Pillows were uncomfortable.
- David (9/5): - Adjacent spa. Good bar and a variety of spaces / lounges.
Breakfast room was nice. Our ground floor room felt overlooked.
Room felt quite small for the price.
- Julie (10/5): magic - Love the Alfriston - they just get everything right! nothing
- Valerie (10/5): Wonderful hotel and spa - Beautiful room, wonderful staff, complementary drinks and cake at different times. Very relaxing atmosphere. Nothing
- Beth (7/5): - Beautifully decorated, most of the staff were lovely, great location, lovely pool Noisy bedroom - may have been over the kitchens or something but it was very loud. One woman on reception was very rude.
- Sabrina (10/5): Charming and friendly hotel in beautiful surroundings. - Beautiful and comfortable hotel. Lots of nice little extras included in the stay. Felt very welcoming Nothing. If arriving by taxi it is best to pre-book.
- Effy (9/5): -
- Sophie (9/5): Amazing! -
- Peter (10/5): - Fantastic will stay again 👍 😀 All excellent 👌
- Kate (10/5): Amazing hotel - I will be back - The room was amazing - gorgeous decor - comfortable bed and nice touches everywhere. Overall the hotel couldn't have been much better - a little more seating in the spa area would be the only addition as I couldn't get a spot.
- ANNA (10/5): I stayed here in the Dene Suite and booked this room for maid of honour for the night before my wedding. We had the best - The staff, the location, the little things (the 9pm pour, the room service) and just how pleasant everything was. I don’t understand how it wasn’t swarmed with people!! Nothing!!!
- Tania (10/5): - The pool and spa were great. The staff were very helpful. The ideas to make things fun made a difference.
- selena (9/5): Lovely place for rest and relaxation. Beautiful walls close to hotel. - Very clean. Friendly staff. Lovely heated pool and beautiful surroundings.
- judy (10/5): -
- Alice_97 (9/5): Gorgeous Hotel! - The facilities and food were really exceptional!! To top off a gorgeous stay, the staff could not be more accommodating to every need and all done with the utmost politeness. My only small issue was the breakfast, while for the most part delicious, did vary in quality over the couple of days so a little more consistency in quality would be great. This didn't take away at all from the experience and I would return time and time again!
- Zohrabyan (10/5): -
- Ben (8/5): Very pleasant breakfast service could be better - Location and facilities great Nothing really
- Emma (10/5): -
- Amy (10/5): -
- Katerina (10/5): -
- Nicole (10/5): - Beautiful hotel and gardens. Really enjoyed the breakfast and heated swimming pool. Great facilities with a sauna and steam room. Bedrooms were exquisitely decorated and beds very comfortable. The staff were very welcoming and accommodating. An exceptional hotel and well worth a visit.
- Katerina (10/5): -
- Katerina (10/5): -
- Tracey (6/5): Good location but failed to deliver - Good location, easy parking, pretty interior, good spa. The reception staff were inept (often on phone or preoccupied, sent item to wrong room), the room and the bed were small and most of all the bedroom doors slammed very noisily and in the mornings in particular the corridor outside our room was cacophonous. (Surely better hinges could be installed?) The noise of guests in the room above us was also very loud.
- Dawn (9/5): Will definitely be back - Friendly and welcoming staff. Lovely relaxing bar space
Perfect location for a walking break Consider how to keep the buffet breakfast warm
- Judith (8/5): -
- Michael (9/5): -
- Sellylink (10/5): Lovely personalised boutique and friendly hotel - I was travelling alone on a short break between Xmas and New Year. The staff were so friendly and attentive and made my stay so welcoming. I got upgraded and stayed in an amazing room. I also used the spa facilities and pool both days which were a delight and very relaxing. Dining in the restaurant was lovely and the food was delicious. I never once felt conscious travelling on my own and it felt like a very personalised service. The bar area is cosy and the cocktails are fabulous. I will definitely be returning again for my next mini break and have recommended to friends who have already visited and have experienced an equally fine time.
- Justin (9/5): -
- Don (8/5): Very please overall with stay - Room and staff were great No light above bathroom sink
- Celia (8/5): A very relaxing family stay in a lovely corner of England. Would recommend. - The pool area is gorgeous and the sauna and steam rooms were great. I also really enjoyed sitting outside the front of the hotel, overlooking the front lawn. Location is perfect, in a lovely little village with direct access to trails and South Downs. Both the restaurant and breakfast room were lovely. Breakfast was plentiful.
Staff were excellent everywhere. We had a family suite which felt a bit tired in parts. But all in all good value.
I felt the burgers for dinner were overpriced.
- Hannah (8/5): Beautiful stay would definitely recommend - Perfect location and room for my mums 60th. They gave us a corner room with double windows looking across Alfriston. It was beautiful! Mum loved the room and didn’t want to leave. The sauna and outdoor pool was also excellent. We had a smaller room and it was also perfect - spotless. The staff were sooo helpful and kept the bar open longer for us when we got back after our night out! Thank you for a wonderful stay. For the price we paid for my parent’s room it was a shame to see that breakfast was empty when they came down. I like the self service idea but it needs to be topped up efficiently and frequently. They were disappointed that everything had gone and there was nobody in a rush to fill anything up. But I do also appreciate that all guests seemed to come down for breakfast at the same time!
- Thomas (10/5): -
- William (10/5): - A comfortable welcoming well cared for space .
- Rosemary (9/5): Very comfortable stay in beautiful surroundings - Beautiful Nothing- the breakfast could have been hotter
- Liz (9/5): - Would like a jacuzzi
- Jane (9/5): -
- Richard (8/5): -
- Mary (8/5): Comfortable and relaxing - Comfy. Good food. Lovely village No shelf in bathroom and no cover totoilet
- Deborah (10/5): A fantastic luxury hotel with utterly charming staff. The bed was so comfortable, cocktails great and SPAso relaxing - Situated in the middle of the countryside, it has splendid views and super clean Nothing
- Alison (10/5): Had a great stay celebrating a birthday with friends, very relaxing and lovely surroundings - Everything was lovely and staff were very friendly. Good breakfast and lovely evening meal Maybe more loungers in relaxation room, we couldn't always all get somewhere to relax (there were 3 of us)
- Elizabeth (9/5): -
- Andrew (8/5): Friendly staff, fabulous location, -
- Claire (8/5): Had a fabulous stay - Beautifully refurbished. Lovely atmosphere
- Glynis (8/5): - Enjoyed the sauna and steam rooms. The atmosphere was great Our room was very hot, so did not have a great sleep
- Christine (8/5): Lovely location, lovely restaurant, disappointing bedroom! - The food was delicious, really lovely dinner and breakfast. Order the Tomahawk! Well worth it! The bed was too small (a standard double rather than a King), the bathroom fan was noisy and went on all night, there are no plug sockets next to a mirror which made hair drying etc tricky.
- David (9/5): Comfortable/ friendly and in a beautiful village. - Loved the location
The staff were so friendly- please look after them they were exceptional.
Very clean
- Emma (9/5): Lovely place to stay for a relaxing, sumptuous few days. Heated outdoor pool out tue back door of our room perfect for m - Beautiful hotel, rooms and grounds. Staff very welcoming and helpful. Heated pool great for morning swim. Was a bit chilly in the bar area in late afternoon before they lit the fire.
- Miguel (10/5): Excellent country weekend break in beautiful Alfriston - Super winter weekend break. Enjoyed our comfy bedroom, the riverside walks, the sauna and outdoor pool, and the friendliness of the staff. Will come again! Not much to dislike. Perhaps the quality of the breakfast wasn't up to the level of the other services. Bit chaotic and the food itself was less good than breakfasts at comparable hotels.
- Scotland (7/5): -
- Richard (8/5): Lovely, welcoming hotel, quirky touches, good parking and great facilities. - Lovely welcome (by Helen) and loved the quirky free-of-charge sweets, fruit & wine sample The bar area was cold and needed a good roaring fire to add both heat & atmosphere.
I booked this hotel as it has a spa, but was not told the spa closes at 6pm and was closed before I finished work and therefore could not use it, which was very disappointing.
- Farah (10/5): -
- Sue (10/5): Wonderful, relaxing 3 night stay with family & friends. - Loved how friendly and relaxing the whole place is run and set up. Loved the spa and the atmosphere.
No stressy staff, all helpful and kind.
Beautiful rooms, fantastic breakfast and great dining options. That I had to leave !!
- Jason (7/5): Good stay but thought the room was not worth the money. - The spa facilities and staff The room, room 2 was too small for the money. Boxy.
- Maggie (9/5): Such a beautiful place. - The interiors
- Rosemary (9/5): Ost enjoyable - Excellent staff welcoming and efficient.
Moved from room with no view to an excellent one with views.
Liked to refurbishment of hotel and grounds immaculate.
Food excellent Dinner Menu could be expanded as we stayed 4 nights Would like more variety in menus for dinner and light bar meals
- Louise (10/5): - We loved our stay here, such a lovely hotel and friendly staff, the breakfast was delicious. We will definitely visit again! Nothing!
- Claire (10/5): -
- Dylan (10/5): -
- Sally (6/5): A lovely location, hotel looks great but is let down by the food offering. - Good location, good renovation of the previous hotel with nice materials, a big improvement. A majority of the staff were helpful. Our room was above the main door which constantly banged which shook the bed! The hotel said the door stopper thing that is meant to close the door slowly was old and needed replacing..
The food was really disappointing. Our meal on the Sunday night was awful. No sourdough bread so cheap white sliced bread given on a dinner sized plate with butter. A dried up, tasteless roast beef with no green veg and horribly fatty roast pork with no crackling, a really poor standard. The breakfasts were also chaotic. Food choice ok but hot food served in large Le Creuset pans with lids which were really heavy and we watched guests really struggling to use them, it was so obviously not working..
- Wendy (8/5): -
- Bailey (10/5): Really lovely stay greeted and catered for by the most incredible staff. - Beautiful interiors, real welcoming feel. Nothing.
- Sarah (9/5): Overall an excellent and very relaxing stay - Beautiful location, lovely decor and very friendly staff too
Fabulous heated outdoor pool Would like a proper cosy lounge to sit in as well as the bar area
