- Travellingchick70 (10/5): Beautiful short stay in a stunning, stylish property - Hotel was gorgeous, beautifully designed and the room very spacious. Loved the Hinoki bath tub, very relaxing Nothing
- Jakob (10/5): -
- Vyskočilová (10/5): Recommend - We stayed only one night as we wanted to experience the traditional Japanese accommodations. It exceeded our expectations and we enjoyed it very much. The only downside was the price as for 2 people for 1 night we paid 320 €.
- Rhys (8/5): -
- Danielle (10/5): -
- Samantha (10/5): Great place to stay! The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. Prime quiet location and just a short bus r - Beautiful! Friendly staff & quiet location. Nothing! Everything was great
- Philippe (8/5): -
- Ortiz (9/5): Fantastic little gem - Gorgeous and well appointed A wee bit out of the way but well worth it
- Irene (8/5): Loved the ambiance, the quiet, and the style/charm and historic character of the residence. - Not applicable Loose tiles on the bathroom floor
Bathroom could use some more hooks or towel bars to hang towels to dry
An extra pad for the bed would be helpful as beds are typical Japanese style - quite firm
- John (10/5): Stunning. - The property is beautiful and well situated.
Our room was so spacious, clean and filled with amenities.
The staff were always available and helpful, be it with requests we made messaging through the app, helping with luggage forwarding etc. N/A

- Roger (10/5): - It felt like a very genuine old property in a very sweet neighbourhood. We got invited in for tea by the neighbours which was an unexpected and lovely experience.
- Madeleine (7/5): - The room was nice and comfortable and the staff were very helpful. It is quite far out of town. When booking we did not realise our room was on the ground floor at the front of the building right by reception. The staff were great but as reception was always manned but it made us feel like we could not fully relax as there was always someone right outside our door. It is an old house which is part of the charm but it meant we had a lot of noise from the rooms upstairs which stopped us sleeping. Our room was not properly cleaned on arrival so we had to request for the floor to be cleaned again to remove dust and hair. The washing machine in the room could have been convenient but the handle was broken and it smelt of stagnant water
- Mohammed Iskandar (10/5): -
- El Mehdi (10/5): Amazing staff, beautiful traditional design -

- Ariel (10/5): Beautiful, quiet, historic, with great people. - Beautiful and beautifully restored WiFi was weak in some parts of the room. But fine overall
- ZHIYING (10/5): Over all it was amazing but next time we will book a different room - Very clean The room facing street was pretty loud in the morning with all
The street noise and people walking and talking
- karen (9/5): The staff were super helpful and kept our bags for a few hours which was much appreciated - The room and bedding was a good size and comfortable. And a nice atmosphere in a 160 year old building that has been renovated
Under floor heating made it cozy and toasty warm. Good facilities including a wooden bath tub Nothing

- Tenzin (10/5): Will definitely be coming back with family. Stunning place with excellent customer service. - Beautiful and peaceful ryokan. It was a pleasure staying here. The staff are very friendly welcoming and accommodating. It was a much needed soothing retreat away from central Kyoto. Nothing.
- KEI (9/5): -
- Rui (10/5): -
- Dominic (10/5): Excellent location, wonderful staff, great room. - The staff were exceptionally accommodating, friendly and helpful with any question we had about Kyoto or travelling in general!
We even bumped into them at the local 7/11 and they helped us translate the luggage delivery form for us, so that we could send our luggage to the next accommodation we had!
The bathroom was elite, amazing bathtub and shower head, huge amount of shelf space. It was all great, lovely experience all around.
- Natalia (10/5): -
- ella (10/5): -
- Kevin (10/5): Loved getting away from the ‘tourist crowds’. The local vibe was exactly the way I expected Kyoto to feel. Loved my stay - The property is elegantly simple. Love the ‘feel’ of its history. Nothing
- Chad (10/5): A beautiful stay nestled in a developing part of Kyoto known for craftsmanship and tradition. - Underrated, quaint, and in a neighborhood of Kyoto laced with community and deep tradition.
This is not your typical hotel in Kyoto. This is a sanctuary of rest and meditation and embodiment of what Kyoto can and was. This is a 160 year old building that has been revitalized and redesigned in a bustling new neighborhood with craft beer, cute cafes, and tradition that has spanned generations. The rooms are impeccable with high thread count bedsheets that feel luxurious to the touch and hospitality to match. My room had a bath overlooking the garden with incredible water pressure and a washer/dryer for the long staying traveler.
This is truly an amazing place to bookmark and revitalize yourself after a stay in Tokyo, or a meditative writing or artistic retreat. After spending a day touring around the city, returning at the end of the day to this quaint neighborhood makes it even better. Extremely accessible and a 4 minute walk to the bus stops that take you to Gion, Kinkaku-Ji, Fushimi, and Arashiyama. Concierge service for helping book restaurants may be nice in the future for first time guests/foodies! This might be a negative compared to booking at a conventional hotel, but otherwise the machiya provides plenty of incredible local restaurants and suggestions. This might be something they add later, but there are many ways to make a reservation nowadays for visitors.
- Sarah (10/5): Amazing stay in Kyoto - can't wait to go back! - Incredible stay in Kyoto - one of our favorites in Japan. Our room was comfortable and roomy, and the location was excellent - you feel much more local in this neighborhood. The staff was the best part - incredibly helpful when our luggage got lost and very welcoming. I would stay again in a heartbeat! Nothing - an incredible stay!
- lulo (10/5): PARADISO - State cercando il paradiso?
Qui lo avete.
Personale super cordiale, camera bellissima è dir poco, super comoda, di sicuro ritornerò al mio prossimo viaggio qui a Kyoto Tutto bellissimo
- hatono (10/5): -
- Christina (9/5): Authentic Machiya ryokan experience - The Kasuri suite is beautiful and really captured the spirit of Kyoto with its charm and the authentic Machiya ryokan experience that it provided. The staff were incredibly hospitable and attentive. The location was good, with 7/11’s, coffee shops, a nice drug/light grocery store, and Kura sushi nearby. There were no dislikes. Only suggestions would be offering bed rails or cribs at the property for families with young children (this is a priority suggestion), having white noise machines outside of the rooms to help with noise traveling, and offering a light breakfast for guests.
- Brillas (10/5): Beautiful room in a local neighbourhood - Beautiful japanese old room with a magical garden Everything was nice but they did not clean our room every day.
- Mark (8/5): Characterful place to stay in a quiet neighbourhood, with friendly staff - Enso Machiya is a very characterful place to stay, with lots of lovely little touches to modernise a very historic house. It was cosy and comfy in our room, and we really enjoyed the wooden bath tub that was so fragrant when filled with hot water. The staff were extremely welcoming and more than happy to help and offer up information and advice, which really made our stay. Location-wise, whilst the neighbourhood has some good restaurants, cafes and shops nearby (including Horikawa Shopping Street), it is still quite a quiet area. Additionally, it is still about 10-15 minutes to walk to the nearest metro / bus stops that can conveniently take you into central Kyoto and the other main attractions.
- Lydia (10/5): -
- Zachary (10/5): -
- Tilly (8/5): - Such a comfortable stay. Staff speaks great English for those who it may pertain to. Hospitality was great. Clean overall except the bathtub needed to be cleaned.
- Griffin (10/5): Amazing Ryokan and stay! Would highly recommend! - Amazing Ryokan and stay! Would highly recommend!
- Marie-Therese (7/5): Nice stay for a first land in Kyoto if you prefer to be slightly off the beaten track. If breakfast was included in the - Spacious rooms, very helpful staff No breakfast offered, which made the price slightly pricey after all
- Taylor (10/5): Peaceful and wonderful Kyoto feel - From the moment we arrived, the treatment and accommodations were impecable!! From the traditional, tranquil Ryokan experience to the wonderful staff, Enso Machiya is the place to stay! It’s over 160 years old!! Not too far from downtown either. Will definitely be returning to Kyoto and staying here! My finance and I stayed here from Tampa, FL Bumped our heads a few times on the slanted ceilings but no harm no foul. We had some laughs when we did it lol
- Martyna (10/5): - Everything 🙂 No towel hangers
- Alison (9/5): -
- Julia (10/5): Staff was lovely and accommodations were excellent - Beautiful accommodation! Traditional Japanese decor. Location was further away from Kyoto sights but that made the neighborhood more relaxing.
- Noah (9/5): Beautiful and historical - Amazing property, staff very polite and helpful during stay. Property was good a bit more on expensive side but room was and history of location made up for it.
- eva (9/5): - The room and the hotel are simply stunning.
It was the best room we stayed in during our entire trip — truly beautiful and fully equipped with everything you could need.
The staff were exceptionally kind and helpful.
The check-in process was a bit long, but nothing too serious.
The only downside is the location. It’s quite far from most central areas in Kyoto, but there’s a convenient bus that takes about 20 minutes, so it’s manageable.
Overall, highly recommended
- Sara (9/5): -
- Aidan (10/5): - The staff and rooms were fantastic. I highly recommend staying here for anyone looking for a quiet stay in Kyoto, away from the craziness of Gion and surrounding areas. It's easy to get around to all the main sites from here, and if needed you can ask them for help. Overall, an amazing stay and we hope to come back soon. Some places to hang towels would be great, but that is it!
- Patricia (10/5): My friend and I had a wonderful 4 days at Enso Machiya! We loved the location and quality of the space, bedding and amen - Beautifully designed and appointed. Loved the quaint and interesting neighborhood, and all the staff were excellent and very helpful. Nothing I didn’t like.
- Amy (10/5): -
- ELISABETH (5/5): Minimal goths, this sleek black place is for you! I found it cold and hard, with friendly staff - Friendly helpful staff, though English is sparse. Large rooms, comfy big beds and soft pillows. AC and heating units upstairs and down. Large modern bath with shower room and hinoki wood tub. Almost everything is black, (floors, bath tiles, walls, table and chairs, as well as the amenities camouflaged inside the all-black cupboards--mod design kettle, microwave, toaster, mini fridge, plates, mugs, pajamas...) Here we are in the traditional textile neighborhood of Kyoto--it would have been nice to see a spot of color on the walls, and have a soft chair to relax and drink the delicious tea offered! I found the blackness cold and depressing, as well a bit dangerous at night with a small step down in the black bathroom.
-it was a pain to lug our (very small) suitcases up narrow steep stairs and, with the large beds, no extra space to put or open bags. Also zero hooks, zero chairs upstairs on which to place clothes.
There is a closet at the far end of the downstairs room, so while changing or unpacking we ended up draping clothes over the (hard, black) dining chairs that are right in the middle of the room
-There are no soft furnishings on the lower floor, so while there is a TV (esthetically hidden away in the black closet) where would you sit to watch, on a hard black chair? Unappealing.
-Another annoyance is no hooks, or towel rails, in the bathroom--where do we put our towels/clothes when bathing?
-Be aware if you have mobility issues that the bath/toilet is downstairs from the bedroom (in case you need to pee in middle of the night) luckily there is a (black, metal) banister.
- DZIYANA (10/5): - We had an excellent stay at this ryokan! Everything was spotless, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. The location is very convenient, and the place itself is beautiful and has a really pleasant atmosphere. We would definitely stay here again!
- Jonathan Elijah (9/5): -
- Blaž (10/5): -
- Piper (10/5): We stayed in the larger suite downstairs for our first two nights and in an upstairs room for our third night; both room - Beautiful layouts to the rooms, comfortable beds, great location. All around wonderful. I have no complaints.
- JUAN (10/5): - This place is charming. The staff is very helpful, and they are always willing to make sure you have everything you need. They give you very useful recommendations for acitivities within Kyoto.
The rooms are beautifully designed. They have soaking tub, tatami floors, coffee machines, etc.
The neighborhood is quiet, charming and far from the big crowds. Nothing. I loved staying here.

- Vicki (8/5): Beautiful, large room blending Japanese and Scandinstyle. Not cheap, but luxurious. - Beautiful room, very large by Japanese standards.
Amazing deep wooden bath
Duvet bedding - soft and comfortable
We left something behind and staff were proactive in trying to reunite us with the item Email comms with room access codes
A little bit of road noise
Would have liked to have stayed longer - but expensive room rate.
- Anna (8/5): - Mov hezky vybaveno, krásná zahrada, super vana, 2 postele až zbytečně velké V posteli byl prach, za ty peníze bych si představovala víc čisto.
V posteli jsme slyšeli povídání recepčních - pocit nesoukromí.
- Isabel (10/5): Quiet stay in Kyoto - The room was very clean, beautiful, and peaceful. The hotel itself is off the beaten path a bit, so although you have to walk a few minutes to get to public transport, what you get in return is a quiet and relaxing reprieve from the city. Staff was very nice and helpful, and it was an excellent stay. We did not do our research as well as we could and didn't realize that Kyoto is definitely a city in which you need dinner reservations. It would be helpful if the hotel could have a list of recommendations on hand, or help call and make reservations, but we should have planned better.
- Eli (10/5): - Leo was the only staff member we talked with during our stay (we had early mornings or late nights), and he was so helpful! Thank you Leo!
- Iris (9/5): net verbouwd achterhuis. groot oppervlak. goede bedden. mooie badkamer.

- Carlos Felipe (10/5): Amazing stay! - The room was beautiful and very well equiped Nothing. Everything was perfect!
- Najette (10/5): The hotel greatly exceeded my expectations, ; I highly recommend Enso Machiya for its cozy rooms, friendly staff, serene - The peaceful hidden retreat fully relaxing and a truly unwind place👍🏻
The room was spacious, very comfortable and amenities were nicely done with a tradition bedding for profound restful experience.
We really appreciated the incredible welcoming staff who are extremely friendly and attentive!
I highly recommend Enso Machiya if you want to step into Kyoto Magical spirt where your experience will be just a Memorable moment that you will remember
- Lauber (10/5): - Everything was perfect, very nice staff, that gave us a lot of adresses and activity on Kyoto.
Thank you again
- Hassan (9/5): -
- Raphaël (10/5): - The hospitality was excellent and the room was beautiful. One of the best ryokan I’ve ever stayed at. Thank you very much !
- Chi (10/5): A hidden gem in Kyoto - Enso Machiya is a delightful hidden gem that perfectly encapsulates traditional Japanese style. The property is exceptionally well-maintained, offering a truly authentic experience. We particularly enjoyed our Family Suite, which featured a private zen garden that instilled a profound sense of tranquility and peace. The suite was thoughtfully equipped with all the necessary amenities, and the in-unit washer/dryer was a fantastic bonus. What truly set our stay apart was the incredibly friendly staff who went above and beyond to make us feel at home. Furthermore, the location in a less-trafficked area allowed us to immerse ourselves in the local culinary scene. Nothing at all
- Ryan (10/5): An enchanting experience, where tradition meets today! - A perfect fusion of traditional charm and modern convenience! Our room with the garden view was exceptional--all of the amenities you'd want and more (the washing machine was a huge, much-needed plus!), and we were incredibly comfortable. The zen garden was so soothing to see each day, and the area in general brings much peace and quiet day and night. It might not be the closest ryokan to the major tourist sites, but it's not far out of the way either, and it's a bonus to be away from the hubbub and noise. We could easily walk to the Kyoto Gyoen National Garden and palace, as well as Nijo Castle, and we found some great cafes and restaurants along the way, nicely tucked away off the beaten path. Other top sites were only a quick cab ride away. As for the staff, you couldn't ask for better hospitality. We were welcomed with such kindness and above-and-beyond assistance, truly making sure we had everything we needed. We only wish we could have stayed longer! No question, we would stay at Enso again and genuinely plan to. There is nothing we didn't like!
