Guest Reviews
- Lori (10/5): - I absolutely love everything around and about this hotel. The temple was absolutely breathtaking 😍 a must see!
- Giselle (10/5): -
- Claudia (3/5): -
- Joanne (10/5): Memorable and very very special - The staff went above and beyond to be kind and friendly, Anoinetta the host is one of the most beautiful humans I have ever met, her uncle and family made us feel like we were welcome and we were family It was absolutely perfect in every way. There were things to do if you wanted and privacy if you did not.
- Shagorika (6/5): Pleasant - Beautiful setting over the lagoon, especially our room with direct access to the lagoon. Able to watch the sunrise from our room. The electricity went out for 24hrs during our stay, no explanations were provided or provisions made to help with this until we asked, and then only a few candles and fairy lights provided. We had no hot water or WiFi during this time, and I think the staff could have done more to compensate for this inconvenience - such as a free dinner or even drinks or an offer on their spa/massage facilities. We ate dinner in the dark, and I appreciate the staff worked hard to even cook and we tipped accordingly, but I felt disappointed in how they handled the blackout.
Also, the person checking us in the night before gave us very little info on our stay, such as breakfast details or how to book a spa treatment or where the spa even was. The pillows in the room also I'm afraid were the most uncomfortable I've ever encountered in a hotel, especially where the room is expensive. I think this resort is starting out and focusing on extras such as morning yoga and herbal tea at your door which are lovely, but have not yet managed to perfect the basics. I'd rather forgo tea and yoga and have clear spa details and due compensation when the electricity is down.
- Amanda (7/5): Beautiful place to stay, but expected more at this price point - We absolutely loved the waterfront bungalow, you can hop right in every morning. The view is stunning and the room was beautiful. The beds were very comfortable as well! We did not have any hot water 50% of the time. Mornings we got some, and at night time chances were better. They simply need to replace their electric water heaters with new ones. They also charge you to bring in food and alcohol to your room, just an FYI.
The other thing that is more difficult to put into words, was the vibe. We kind of felt judged by some of the staff. Most of the staff, was great, but we had a couple of moments where we felt dismissed and a bother to some people. That being said, we still really enjoyed the hotel, I just expected a bit more for the cost that we paid.
- Fred (7/5): Good -
- Jonathon (10/5): Exceptional - Food was amazing, staff was great and helpful. Room was situated nicely over the lagoon. Room’s proximity to neighbours. Could have a bit more privacy
- Sergio (7/5): Very nice place to stay. The only thing is the restaurant needs ceiling fans & the cabanas need AC - Cabanas where cool Cabanas need air conditioning
- Manuel (8/5): Very good -
- Cathy (6/5): Pleasant - On the lagoon It was like the staff was on vacation, slow service for the amount of money I spent to stay there. Every food order was incorrect.
No ac in the over water bungalows, and the mosquitoes are bad.
- Cathy (5/5): Best and worst - The location Service was extremely slow. You'd think the staff was on vacation too. The food was extremely expensive. No air-conditioned bungalows, mosquitoes ate horrible. Repellent provided didn't work at all. Will never stay there again
- Anga (10/5): Exceptional - Dream Vacation on Overlagoon Bungalows,
just jump from room into Bacalar Lagoon,
very friendly for non-swimmers as property offers complimentary life jackets and kayaks
- Wood (10/5): Exceptional -
- Irina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Thomas (10/5): Great getaway - Great retreat on water. Very peaceful. Great staff who are very receptive. Nothing
- Beatrice (10/5): Incredible experience - Everything was excellent, just perfect. I recommend with eyes closed, definitely the highlight of our trip. We liked everything.
- Florence (5/5): Passable - Massage was good Not worth the money we paid
- Jose (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alphonse (10/5): Amazing stay - highly recommended - Amazing rooms with privatized decks. Food & beverage wasn’t great
- Kennedy (7/5): Good - The location is stunning and the palapa on the water was incredible. It is quiet and peaceful. The staff is kind and attentive. The food at the restaurant was disappointing (bland, not very sophisticated) so we went to town most meals which required us to rent a scooter and multiple taxis. We were happy to explore town, but if you wanted to stay on the property the entire time, it would not be ideal.
- Juan (9/5): Lovely stay in paradise. - Can’t beat the rooms right off the water. Wonderful architecture. Very friendly staff. Property Needs updates. Paddle boards pretty beaten. Landscaping could be amazing. Never understood what was “holistic” about this place. Feels like any other small hotel.
Yoga was ok but nothing special.
Restaurant menu is too ambitious. Simpler, more honest local food would be preferable. That was not a fillet mignon and that wasn’t burrata.
They didn’t have white wine two of our 4 nights.
- Kitty (9/5): Superb - The people, the staff, the vibe The poo smell sometimes
- Rogelio (10/5): Exceptional - Get location, right on the water No AC.
- Erika (9/5): Great stay with family and friends! - Superbe location Would be practical to have more shelves in the room
- Cherine (10/5): Exceptional -
- Yana (10/5): A real gem of Bacalar - everything nothing
- Karen (9/5): Superb - the food
- Lynn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Frédéric (10/5): definitely A place to go… - incredible property facing the lagoon.
the Staff is just outstanding
the lodging, temple, the healthy restaurant, the atmosphere…so many fantastic things some power issues during 2 days
- Vaibhav (8/5): On the beautiful Bacalar lagoon, this self-contained resort is a beautiful getaway for peace andvtranquility - Location, yoga classes, templo. Everything was great
- Grabe (9/5): Superb - It's a wonderful place! Staff in the restaurant needs to be more attentive
- Irina (7/5): I would, definitely, go back, and hope the service would be better then! - location and access to the lagoon The service was not great, cancelled our trip without notifying us. Service in the restaurant wasn’t great either, very slow and not well responsive. At time of our trip they were going over management changes, so it likely affected the service as it was easy to notice that their actions were not well coordinated. After multiple complaints it got so much better, I hope we didn’t have to do it, but had no choice. Food was ok, a few dishes like Mexican ceviche and guacamole were excellent. Continental breakfast included fruits/juice, coffee/teas and bread. Early morning tea and cookies delivered to your room were exceptional. Boat trips with captain Yan were amazing, he is such a pro!
- Anonymous (9/5): everything was amazing, especially the views! - the property was amazing
- Trespalacios (10/5): Akalki Holistic Center and beautiful hotel - Best hotel in Bacalar no doubt. Akalki isn't only a hotel but it's Holistic Center where you can heal. Everyone there made us feel like a family. Thanks to Jaime, Tania, Héctor, Mireya and Jan for a wonderful experience for me and my wife
We will be back soon!
- Jorge (10/5): wonderful - Everything A few mistakes like dirty water containers when delivering tea to the rooms.
- Stephan (9/5): Superb - the location is breath taking!
quality of food was very good it was a pity that there was no air conditioning
- Othmane (7/5): Beautiful property with some rough edges - The property is beautiful and located in a quiet and clean part of the lagoon, a little further away from the busiest areas close to the center. The landscaping and decoration of the property are nicely done, and there’s an interesting “temple” area with cool architecture and art, including a massive sculpture at the entrance.
The morning activities on the lake were a great way to start the day (yoga on most days, sound healing on Sundays), and the tea and cookies delivered daily to our room were a nice touch. We also enjoyed the paddle boards (though be careful when returning to the dock to avoid injuries, especially during windy / choppy conditions).
The hotel staff was very friendly, helpful and welcoming at all times. While we had a good stay overall, we’d recommend working on improving the following:
Linen / house keeping: Our bed sheets had stains - note: they were most likely clean but stained sheets are unpleasant nonetheless ; after we mentioned the issue, our sheets were replaced with unstained ones. Our room was also not cleaned one day (out of four).
Rooms: The rooms lacked functional elements / shelves / storage space to put luggage, clothes, etc. There were a couple of hangers and shelves in the bathroom but a few more in the main room would be great. It would also be useful to have a light switch near the bed.
Breakfast: The “breakfast included” in our reservation was lacking and consisted of a plate of fruits OR a glass of juice, and 4 pieces of bread with jam and butter - that’s what we were served for 2 days before being told that it was their “continental” breakfast and that we should have received the “american” option instead (which includes eggs as well), this is what we got for the last 2 days of our stay ; given the minor cost differences between the two, we’d recommend eliminating the “continental” breakfast and keeping only the “american” option ; this would simplify things for staff and avoid the kind of confusion we experienced, while offering a better product to customers
Smell: Occasionally, there was a really bad sewage smell in our room and near the restaurant (close to the toilets), particularly after rain
Noise: There were odd noises coming from the ceiling in our room, which sounded like stones falling on the roof
- Johanna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jane (10/5): What a fabulous place ,the room on the lake was incredible, yoga Shala stunning the temple aweinspri - Everything Nothing
- Nieto (9/5): Superb - the place is beautiful, clean, amazing the rate I payed for didn’t specify what kind of breakfast we would get, it was American breakfast which surely wasn’t enough. The staff was very kind but it felt like they were short staffed at the moment, you had to go look for them, etc.
- Elle (9/5): Superb - The Holistic atmosphere was amazing, the staff superb with their attentiveness to your comfort. The setting on the Laguna was also superb. The room was large and the beds were very comfortable, however I wished there was a dresser to put my clothes into!
- Valeria (10/5): Exceptional -
- Fedra (9/5): Superb -
- Susanne (10/5): looking for total peace you found PARADISE here! - location relaxing from the moment you check in
- Massimo (9/5): Superb - Fantastic location, food, and staff.
Eco friendly.
- Valerio (9/5): Superb -
- Francisco (9/5): Superb - beautiful setting, super clean, large rooms very comfortable world cup and no TV
- Ruslan (10/5): Exceptional - Pure magic to be expected and received at this wonderful place
- Brian (9/5): I'd go back for the room on the lagoon, but eat somewhere else. - My room was wonderful: private, excellent view right on the water, the bed was comfortable, and the setting lovely. I also liked the mosquito net, which was important in that area. Although with the breeze in the morning i left the doors open to the lagoon and there were no bugs. The grounds were also lovely. The food. I honestly have to say that my dinner at Akalki was the worst meal I had in Mexico. Ever. My octopus was stale and cold. I think they cooked it before and then just heated it up. My croquets were also cold. Probably for the same reason as the octopus. When I asked them why it was cold they just apologized and heated it up for me and gave me a desert on the house. They also said that they are catering to foreigners who complain about flavor. Hmmmm...this was the worst food I have had at such a nice hotel. In the morning, I had to go to another place down the road to eat because I didn't want to risk having bad food again.
- Diego (10/5): Exceptional -
