Guest Reviews
- Joanne (8/5): A good stay - Wet comfortable bed and nice rooms Quite noisy
- Leigh (7/5): Good location and comfortable room. - Location and free parking It was fine. Decor needs refreshing
- William (7/5): I would stay again - Location Nothing
- Alex (10/5): - Everything all staff were excellent the hotel was superb and we are all going back next year
- Richard (8/5): Good - WiFi must improve for Business guests. I was in room 33 and it was a very weak signal not allowing me to work, which means I’ll have to catch up over the weekend!! And it’s a bank holiday
First World Problem I know 🙄
- Anthony (8/5): - Central ,great food,staff excellent
- Mandy (8/5): -
- Jill (4/5): Very disappointing - Struggling to find a positive Check in was appalling. Nobody on reception so had to call bar staff to check in. They couldn’t help so had to call manager from home. We said we would get a drink while we were waiting but another delay at the bar as no staff. At breakfast ordered pancakes and after order was taken to kitchen waitresses returned to advise they had run out and were waiting for a delivery. Clearly chef unable to make a pancake. Coffee luke warm and continental breakfast items not topped up so had to ask for yogurt to be replenished and only one pastry on display.
- David (8/5): Nice place - Good location right in the town centre, room was clean, comfy and spacious. Staff nice and friendly. Car park a little tight in places
- richard (5/5): Friendly staff but disappointed that I was not informed that work on the location meant that there was no hot water had - Good location No hot water

- sally (7/5): clean and comfortable room - left our car in car park before checking in which was handy. room lovely although very hot as window only opens a but and it was a hot day. clean, plenty of teabags and coffee to make a drink, would have liked a bit bigger bed. there was a wedding reception while we were there and althugh i realise it can't be helped the music in the evening was very loud although it did stop at 11pm. i know thats not late but we had been travelling since 6am and so very tired. as we were not one of the wedding guests it would have been nice if we could have had a room away from the reception but our room looked out over the car park and so was very close to the reception room.

- Brooks (3/5): Very disappointing experience. - Reception staff very friendly and helpful. Furniture worn and ripped in bar areas.
No Green King IPA available in Green King establishment!
Breakfast was stone cold and inedible - shocking.
Felt like the place was being 'run down'.
Will be Travelodge next time.
- Debbie (9/5): - Comfortable bed, good shower, car park. Pillows were not comfortable for me.
- Dean (4/5): - Location was great in centre of town Room was terrible. We stayed in room 14. There was a continuous hum which drove us mad. Noise from the smoking area below. Pillows rock hard, and noise from other guests. Would not stay there again 🤨
- Bill (4/5): Great location ventilation system requires attention - Location, comfortable bed Poor nights sleep due to very noisy ventilation system, poached eggs tasted of vinegar and were brown not runny yokes
- Duane (8/5): Lovely place with very welcoming staff who went above and beyond! - Fab building! Noisy clientele
- Alan (7/5): Value for money basic hotel in good location - Good location with parking in centre of town It is in need of modernisation. Now looking rather tired.
- Jenna (10/5): -
- Jonathan (10/5): -
- GORDON (10/5): Wonderful weekend - The manager was very obliging , nothing was too much trouble. Definitely book again. Nothing at all.
- Carole (7/5): Good value. - Clean and everything you need. Scruffy outside eating area.
- David (10/5): Exelent hotel in good location. - The room was spacious and comfortable and had everything we needed for a short stay. Some parts of the property were very old and full of character. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was very good with a wide choice. The bar area was nice with plenty of room and outside seating. Xx
- Susan (7/5): Know better next time - Free car park for guests a bit tight in places Lovely pub plenty of character
Staff friendly & helpful. Room clean bed comfortable. And a very nice breakfast good choice and cooked beautifully. We came down for one night for the football
It was a late kickoff we didn’t get back to the hotel till 8.15. What we should have done is had a look round town to have something to eat. We noticed a couple of place we would have tried the morning after.
But we decided to eat in the hotel. Both our first choice wasn’t available. Expected late on what I did order was no better than grabbing a freezer tea at home when you are rushing or even worse.
I don’t always mind cheap and cheerful sometimes but this wasn’t it was low quality ingredients for Gasto pub prices.
- Wendy (9/5): Good hotel with friendly staff - Good location. All staff were very friendly and approachable. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were consumed, all very good, particularly the poached eggs, fish finger wrap and katsu curry. All food and drinks reasonably priced too. Good, free car park but once full other spaces available were in a tight area to navigate.
- Dara (8/5): All in all a pleasant experience, with the exception of the noise from the bar. - The staff is very friendly and helpful, dining room inviting, food excellent and the food service fast and reliable. The hotel itself is charming and comfortable. Room cleaning was excellent. I liked the ability to add breakfast to my room bill. I think the hotel could do something to make staying in Room 3 (my room) less noisy. It's located directly above the bar, which means there is music playing and noise until 11:00pm. Some nights, people lingered outside for as much as another hour, talking loudly. Some kind of soundproofing might help, but it was difficult getting to sleep until all the revelers had finally gone home.
- Josh (7/5): -
- susan (8/5): - It was convenient for our destination plus the hotel has a restaurant which the food was great.
- Kay (5/5): What room is exceptable with no water coming out of hot tap & shower not even a drip - Staff very helpful We had no hot water at all & wasn’t pre warned
We also got a parking ticket for dropping luggage off & picking it up next day we parked in a different car park as it was full
- Jeannette (9/5): -
- Tiger (6/5): -
- John (10/5): -
- Yvonne (8/5): As usual a good stay. The waitress in the dining room is very friendly and convivial as well as being efficient. All sta - Always friendly, mostly easy parking, room clean and tidy The amount of stairs but that is in keeping with the age of building. Must remember to request lower rooms
- Alexander (8/5): Good Price. - The price. A bit noisy in corridor and from smoking area outside.
- Spencer (8/5): -
- Carolina (10/5): -
- angela (7/5): Pleasant and convenient - Location perfect for my hospital appointment, very pleasant and helpful staff For us it was the stairs they were a struggle but we were aware of them when booking not a complaint just worth noting
- Victor (9/5): -
- Chris (8/5): We had a great stay and would stay again if in the area. - Central location. Parking on site. Staff are attentive and friendly. Couldn’t be more helpful. Lots of choice for breakfast which was really good. Good choice for food during the day and a welcoming bar area. Would definitely stay here again.
Don’t book room 26. It is next to the ventilation system. Humming noise lasts all day which isn’t a problem. But it goes on until the kitchen closes and starts up around 6.20am.
- Robert (9/5): -
- Paul (8/5): Good all round hotel

- Jacqueline (8/5): - It was lovely and clean. Staff very friendly and helpful
- Oconnor (10/5): -
- Joanne (8/5): Lovely little place to rest your head - The property has character, rooms are comfortable and good value for money. Staff were lovely I am a light sleeper and we got back late so I did hear the night manager speaking to someone doing his rounds in the very early hours but that was the only thing I could say otherwise you couldn’t fault the place or the staff who were so lovely.
- Clive (6/5): Adequate. - Location. Good Breakfast. Mattress as hard as iron.
Dining room cold, draughty.
- Keith (9/5): So pleased we booked the WHITE HART - What a wonderful old building and helpful young lady on reception to greet us, our room was lovely with the beams and furniture, comfy bed and everything else we needed. Although we lived in Braintree many years ago we were not aware what a beautiful building this is. We didn't eat at the hotel due to the party we were going to however the dining room was impressive looking. Definitely recommend. Toilet paper ! VERY thin
- Lee (10/5): -
- Karen (8/5): -
- justin (1/5): Time for a revamp greene king - Clean and tidy and staff are very helpful Leg missing from the bed so wobbled to one side when I moved , floor is so creaky and restaurant carpet has had its day
- Julie (10/5): -
- Michelle (9/5): -
- Jane (10/5): Good location, great staff and lovely food. - Staff very friendly. Breakfast and evening meal were both excellent. Building was a little tired.
- Sarah (10/5): - All staff friendly and polite. Good to see same staff there as when I stayed 3yesrs ago No drinking water available in bedroom
- Dorota (10/5): - Klimatyczny, staroangielski wystroj, przepyszne sniadanko... Krany trudno odkrecic, chyba przydalo by sie wymienic na nowe
- Chris (10/5): Good accommodation, excellent food and pleasant team members. - Dinner and breakfast were exceptional, really good food. Room was lovely, comfy bed and the shower was perfect. Great value for money. The smallest of details, but me and my family couldn’t find any water at breakfast, and when we asked for some it seemed to be a chore for our server to get it. However, everything else was great.
- Chris (7/5): - Excellent breakfast Room was too hot and air conditioning noisy
- Victoria (7/5): It was convenient and comfortable - Good location, staff were polite The young lady serving the breakfast was very attentive however she was rushed off her feet, she needed some support!!
- Luke (7/5): -
- Ross (9/5): A fantastic night away, very convenient and the cleanliness was of a high standard. - We stayed for one night having arrived at 4, my wife has hurt her foot but the staff couldn’t be more helpful moving us to a room where the steps were kept to a minimum. The dinner we had was lovely and the breakfast although in the bar was done as requested and was lovely. Certainly recommended to all who would like a good hotel for a good price. The only thing we could think of is the room was very warm but the bed was so comfortable and we did turn the heating down.
- Alessandro (10/5): Eccezionale - Tutto perfetto Niente da segnalare
- Helga (7/5): Very traditional hotel - lovely staff - There are many aspects of this hotel which are quirky, to say the least (see "What didn't you like), but this hotel redeemed itself because of its staff. From the young man who checked us in and carried our suitcase up the steep staircase, and who then reappeared in many different guises, to the breakfast staff, everyone was exceptionally friendly and helpful. As the window in our original room was broken, we were up-graded without fuss. Both rooms were spacious, and the bed was comfortable. The shower was very powerful, which we like. Also, for our purposes (a family funeral nearby), the location of the hotel was ideal, and we appreciated the free parking included in a very reasonable price The vegetarian cooked breakfast was fantastic! This hotel is in an old building, with steep staircases and no lift. The window in our original room, overlooking a busy road was broken and did not close, so it was too noisy to sleep in. If you prefer anything other than cow's milk on your breakfast cereal or like fresh fruit, this is not the place for you, but the cooked breakfast and pastries were very good. You just need to be aware that this is a traditional type of hotel before you book.
- Janet (8/5): A budget stay, don't expect any frills. - Room was clean and functional. Cooked breakfast was good. Pleasant check in. Hotel was old fashioned and some areas very clearly needed smartening up and some tlc. Very basic selection of continental breakfast, with juices standing in warm sunshine. Hot water from flask was barely warm and not suitable to make tea, although this was promptly sorted when advised. Biscuits on the tea/coffee tray with some water would have been nice.
- Sonia (9/5): -
- John (7/5): -
- Mark (6/5): Former coaching inn in heart of town - Pleasant staff, great breakfast. Fantastic location Small room, lugging suitcases up narrow stairs. No usb charger port in the room
- Signe (6/5): - Frokosten var dyr og mangelfull. Det ble ikke fylt på mer ettersom utvalget minket der en kunne forsyne seg selv til frokost.
- Debbie (5/5): -
- heel (7/5): Cheap nearly cheerful - Good central location, value for money, asked for quiet room and got one. Car park a bit small, bar was busy and noisy, asked for table to be booked but this didn't happen, wasn't aware of the extra charge for pets when booking, restaurant staff anal about pets in the restaurant as we had to walk though the area once. Room decor starting to look tired and toilet was different to flush. Breakfast also goes up £2.50 if not booked in advance.
- Eileen (9/5): -
- Martin (10/5): -
- Sophie (6/5): Would of liked our rooms close to each other - The rooms with spacious My only issue was the 2 rooms I booked were on different floors
