Guest Reviews
- Ken and Gina (4/5): Great location - Great location in the hub of the village
An ideal spot from which to explore Exmoor and beyond
Parking was provided nearby free of charge
Excellent restaurant next door The hotel would benefit from total refurbishment
Bar was closed
- Jenny (7/5): We enjoyed our stay mainly due to the lovely family who ran the hotel. - Great location. Really lovely owners who were very obliging.
Breakfast was very good as was the meal we had on our first evening. We were there on a cycling trip and were able to store our bicycles inside the property which was great. The property was rather run down which was sad as it had so much potential and so well situated in the lovely town of Dulverton.
- Emma (10/5): The best of Somerset country pub hospitality - Breakfast (full English) was hands down the best breakfast we had in the UK. The family run hotel was intimate and cozy. Our room was a twin with exceptional decor and homely feel. The beds were amazing. I enjoyed having a beer in the afternoon with the locals and chatting to the fellow guests (some longer stays and some tourists like us. I arrived on a sunday when the main bar was closed however this wasn't an issue as there was someone waiting on arrival for me and accommodated me despite being late. Truly appreciated. We enjoyed pizza night on Monday. So close to all facilities - we attended church steps away on arrival, and there is a coop supermarket also within steps and all the town attractions. We wish we could have stayed longer!
- Kara (10/5): - Lovely food cooked fresh served by warm friendly staff. Rooms were warm and comfortable. Really good nights sleep! The decor is a little tired but as dog owners this really doesnt bother us.
- Aunit (10/5): -
- Felicity (8/5): - Stored our bikes securely.
Very comfortable bedroom.
- Alistair (8/5): -
- Michael (6/5): - Location was perfect for me. Breakfast was very good abd tailored to your requirements. Shower did not work in the room (7) but did have a bath.
- Louise (8/5): Spring Break at The Lion - Location was perfect for exploring Exmoor.
Accommodation was adequate and our bed was really comfortable.
Staff were friendly and helpful.
Breakfast was excellent.
Dog friendly. Our room at The Lion Hotel would benefit from redecoration as it was outdated and looked tired.
- Joshua (10/5): Enjoyable stay in all regards - Comfortable older hotel in nice condition. Good breakfast. Good location. Very friendly owners and staff.
- Roy (6/5): The hotel was adequate good & bad points, not good value for money. - Location was very good. Staff very friendly. Excellent breakfast. Room very tired. Shower tepid. Basic TV very small.
- herve (8/5): - La localisation
Le petit déjeuner full English
Parking public à côté gratuit la nuit Rien hôtel style vieille auberge mais chambre triple confortable
- Jennifer (10/5): Great staff and location x v gd value for money . Decor a little bit tired but did not detract from a lovely stay - Friendly staff v helpful . Good breakfast excellent service from all staff . Comfy bed lovely linen and towels . Excellent value .
- Craig (9/5): Good for bicyclists - This is a good place for bicycles. They had indoor storage for our bikes. The rooms are dated, but they were comfortable and quiet and everything worked. Both dinner and breakfast were very good. The hosts were especially helpful and made lunch for us to take on our ride for a reasonable price.
- Geoffrey (8/5): A step back into the good 'ol sixties! - Lovely location and the hotel was a step back into the 60's so quirky. Needs a decorative makeover but it would lose its eccentricity.A steo back to
- Alan (6/5): -
- Edward (10/5): -
- mike (10/5): - .
- Bruce (6/5): Comfortable, clean, excellent breakfast, but room felt tired and shower not good. - Very clean, friendly staff, and perfect location. Mattress was comfy, daily room clean and re-stock of tea was faultless. Excellent cooked breakfast. Shower - hopeless on pressure so had to resort to baths all the time (plenty of hot water though).
Room furniture - not enough flat space to put things on. The wardrobe was v unsafe - felt like it would fall on top of me (needs fixing firmly the wall).
The curtain kept coming off the end of its rail (reported to staff).
Needs a shelf or two in the bathroom for toiletries etc (there were signs there had been one).
- Ian (8/5): Everything you need in fantastic location - Perfectly placed, does it's job for the right price. Country pub accommodation Toast needs to come with breakfast not while waiting.
Hotel needs up grading....but then price would rise so it's a balance.
- Robert (7/5): - Good location in the centre of the village. Comfortable, but could do with a face lift
- Geoffrey (8/5): -
- Ruth (10/5): - The staff are brilliant, friendly and helpful but not intrusive
- Anne Marie (8/5): An elegant hotel in the heart of a charming and picturesque village genuinely warm friendly and nice team - Beautifully situated
Very friendly atmosphere
Very large bedroom and very comfortable bed
The team really looked after the guests nothing was too much trouble and very nice people Carpets need replacing
- Mary (5/5): -
- Paul (10/5): - Excellent food. Responsive and friendly host.A room of character with plenty of space..and a good bath
- charles (8/5): -
- Jacqueline (8/5): A spacious room in the heart of Dulverton ….. with excellent food - Really good sized room for us and our two dogs. The room could do with a coat of paint and a bit of tlc but it was spacious, a really comfy bed with lovely linen, the bathroom was gleaming, nice fluffy towels. We ate in the restaurant one night, the food was very reasonably priced and excellent ingredients. Breakfast was just as good - all good quality items. All the staff were extremely friendly. Location fabulous. Very picky but a brighter more welcoming lounge area when you walk in would be nice, it was quite dark and didn’t look as though it was open to start with ….. but that’s just my personal preference - we really enjoyed our stay.
- Rachel (7/5): - Great location
Lovely food
Friendly staff Decor is a bit dated,
- JAMES (9/5): - Perfect location. Very good breakfasts and they allow dogs. Nothing is
- Victoria (8/5): - Excellent location
- jan (10/5): Very welcoming - Staff and location
- Rich (8/5): -
- Leonardo (7/5): Lovely stay when in the area - Lovely service.
Comfortable and spacious rooms.
Good food (both dinner and breakfast) Very slow wifi (basically unusable, I had to hotspot from my phone)
There was a really loud pump behind the toilet that would just start throughout the night.
- Sarah (9/5): Good Hotel - Centre of village location. Friendly, helpful staff. Breakfast tables laid out correctly, not the "Help yourself and the cutlery is over there" attitude. Creaky floorboards! I didn't read the advert correctly so the cold shower came as a surprise but the bath was nice and hot.
- Matthew (9/5): -
- Mandy (10/5): -
- NEIL (8/5): -
- Marsha (6/5): - Location
Good breakfast 😋
Clean room
Good welcome Very dated
No atmosphere
Cold shower
Could do with upgrading
- John (8/5): -
- Barbara (5/5): Location/ venue very good future forward planning for unforseen circumstances poor - Location very good & convenient for exploring Exmoor & Dunster Show. Fortunate to get one of the 3 parking spaces outside the hotel-having dogs does mean you have extra baggage etc. Our welcome was by a very jolly lady. Unfortunately we were informed on arrival that the Chef was unwell & no meals available that evening however there were many eating places close by. I had been informed on booking that they did not cater for Lactose intolerance-I agreed to bring my own no problems. Breakfast was entirely mis-managed which appeared not to have been forward planned. There were many guests & a printed menu on each table would have speeded up the process, also self-service of cereals etc. (usually the norm)-choice was limited corn flakes/granola. Fresh fruit limited to a few slices of banana or apple. My toast never arr-my friend who opted for poached egg on toast commented that the toast was 'soggy'. Another guest handled the coffee percolator to other guests-otherwise fill-ups would not have likely happened. Most guests were keen to get on with there visiting of the area. I had no information about the fee charged for pets. My breakfast certainly was not value for money.
Isolation thermique.
- Terry (8/5): - Food good. Friendly staff. Service a bit slow, could have done with more staff.
- jennifer (8/5): - Very comfortable, warm welcome, good breakfast. Interesting plumbing. Church bell that rang regularly until midnight and then from 5am.
- Ian (5/5): - Friendly helpfull staff The rooms are in need of attention. we had two rooms between us. one of the room had very big cobwebs in that had been there for a long time. the other room wall paper was coming off the wall with damp
- Helen (10/5): -
- Susan (10/5): We go there often and always enjoy our stay. - Breakfast was amazing, friendly staff and the location was perfect. N/A
- suzanne (10/5): Restful - Great stay Nil
- Carol (9/5): Great experience and will return - Family run hotel with friendly service and great value for money food It’s a historic property and maybe a bit “tired” but atmosphere and service made up for that.
- Helen (9/5): Very friendly helpful staff. Delicious breakfast. - Traditional Exmoor Inn
- Justin (7/5): We have now stayed 3-4 times, that surely is a recommendation? - Its so well located and reasonably priced, it fits us very well. Breakfast is great too. We were a bit cold but given how bad the weather was! No complaints.
- Emma (8/5): - The breakfast was excellent and the location was perfect for exploring Exmoor.
- Robbie (8/5): -
- NonnysAdventures (8/5): Friendly and comfortable - The room was comfortable and cosy, the staff were welcoming and friendly and the breakfast was fresh and delicious The room was a little tired, grouting and spider webs so they need a refresh but I appreciate it's a very old building
- yang (9/5): - The staff are very helpful! The bedding is comfortable. It is an old hotel but very clean.
- Katharine (8/5): -
- Cheri (6/5): -
- Michael (9/5): - Very good, The breakfast was well presented, and we had a large choice to choose from and nicely cooked.
- Suki (8/5): - Friendly helpful staff. Clean, warm comfortable room. Amazing location Slightly dated decor that needs a bit of attention but this would not stop me staying again
- Jacqui (9/5): Welcoming hotel in a lovely setting - Basic hotel room, but clean and comfortable. Excellent food in the evening and at breakfast. The shower in one of the rooms was poor.
- steven (10/5): - Very comfortable stay. Welcoming staff. Excellent food
- Mary (10/5): - Centre of Dulverton. In room complimentary tea coffee and bottle water. The bottle water was warm as by radiator!
- REHAN (6/5): - Good location, good food Shower didn’t work
- suzanne (10/5): Will be back - The room ,atmosphere of the hotel friendly , location good, breakfast amazing slept so well None
- Timothy (9/5): excellent central hotel - excellent central hotel - car park very close plus on street parking - fab breakfast provided and super friendly staff - lastly good value for money nothing
- June (9/5): Super stay in a lovely homely environment..great breakfast ..will stay again! - Warm welcome and comfortable room Couldn’t find a hairdryer in my room but would have been nice to have one available
- Karen (10/5): Very nice, comfortable stay. Excellent full English breakfast. - Very warm welcome from hosts. They were very attentive to looking after us. Nothing to dislike
- Catherine (4/5): faulty towers - breakfast was wonderful sadly the hotel and whole area has seen better days. the lady that checked us in, I dont think she would choose to do the job if she had a choice. The lady serving breakfast and generally running around after everybody should be the front of house (and paid for it)
- Brigid (10/5): We would stay again at the Lion Hotel on our next visit. - The Lion Hotel was charming, the breakfast was the perfect start to our day. The staff were very helpful and allowed us a check late after our pony trek and extended check out due to our car breaking down. They gave us details of a local garage & mechanic who might help.
- Alistair (8/5): A great place to stay if you appreciate cosy, traditional English country hotels, - Charming old-fashioned English country hotel in a wonderful location at the heart of Dulverton, very sympathetically decorated and furnished. Breakfast was good too. The decor in the bathroom was a little tatty.
- Declan (10/5): Probably best value hotel within Exmoor - Good quality breakfast with very good service, amazing location for exploring Exmoor and better value than other hotels nearby. Room was cozy and had the facilities we would expect at that price. Room was larger than expected with good storage.
- Mark (8/5): A very pleasant visit. I would be happy to stay there again if down that way in the future - Good base for exploring exmoor. I stayed for three days. Breakfast was cooked to order. Evening meals not always available, but the pizza on Monday night was very good. Car parking limited to on-street outside the hotel or in nearby public car park. I always managed to find a space just outside.
- Nick (7/5): Great for a night or two for walking purposes - Well placed, easy to find. Friendly Dated. Plumbing issues. Bar was closed by the time we returned at 9.30
- Shawn (7/5): -
- Sandra (9/5): Ideally situated for visiting local area. - Ideally situated Needed updating in some areas
- Peter (8/5): Good value, comfortable short stay in the centre of Dulverton - Good location, easy parking nearby. Friendly, helpful staff. Good breakfast.
- Steve I (6/5): - Location, friendly staff, it's right in the village centre. Bit dated, nice big room but shower and tv need upgrade and a lot looks a bit tatty. Perfectly clean, just seen better days
- Justin (8/5): - The food was outstanding and overall was a great place to stay. Not much. Church bells annoying but not hotels fault
- Oliver (7/5): -
- Judith (8/5): -
- Viv (8/5): -
- Jane (5/5): -
- Victoria (6/5): Probably better places to stay - Location was suitable for me A tired property, waited ages for breakfast- they could only manage one table at a time. By time it came my children had given up. So we left it.
- Geraldine (4/5): - Location was good , staff very friendly and helpful , breakfast was good Room was very tired and cold
- Helen (7/5): -
- Philippa (7/5): - Good breakfast and friendly, helpful staff. The rooms are a bit tired, but comfortable.
- Suzanne (10/5): -
- Susan (8/5): Very happy, we would stay again if we were visiting the area. - Breakfast was excellent, and the staff were friendly and keen to make sure we had everything we wanted. It's in a great location for visiting Exmoor. The weather, but that was not fault of the property.
- Tomas (10/5): -
- Jan Willem (7/5): Had a good time - Old-fashioned and quirky with great breakfast and wonderful showers We could have done with more hooks or a rack to hang wet towels and wet walking clothes
- Robin (8/5): Nice family run hotel in very pretty village - Fabulous staff. Lovely family run hotel. Toilet wouldn’t flush. Central heating not working but they did provide us with an electric heater so we were warm.
- Martin (9/5): -
- Anna (7/5): -
- Karin (8/5): Sehr angenehmer Aufenthalt - Freundliche Gastgeber, leckeres Essen
- marie (7/5): -
- Ruth (10/5): The best few days - wonderful atmosphere and superb hosts! - The location is fantastic, close to all amenities. It is also ideally situated to visit other attractions nearby eg Tarr Steps, Lynton and Lynmouth, Valley of the Rocks etc.
The hosts were superb - very friendly and accommodating.
Food scores 10/10! It was delicious and homemade.
Bedrooms - tv (small), clean linen, good sized bathroom, hairdryer available plus enough drawers and a wardrobe.
Wi-fi available.
Lovely atmosphere - we often all chatted at mealtimes, although there is no pressure to if you wish for some time on your own.
I would thoroughly recommend the hotel. The rooms were a little tired and dusty. The lining paper on the ceiling was coming away.
The restaurant is not open every evening (this did not bother me at all but it may be worth considering. There are other options in Dulverton and there is a small co-op across the road).
Despite these, I had a great time.
- Robert (7/5): -
- Manon Mayora (10/5): - Acceuil impeccable, personnel adorable
Petit déjeuner avec options vegans délicieux
Chambre propre et qui sentait bon
Très bon emplacement dans un village très mignon
Merci pour l'accueil ! Chasse d'eau un peu dure à utiliser
- Philip (6/5): Enjoyed the stay but hotel clearly needs investment - Location perfect, staff very friendly, comfortable bed with nice linen, decent breakfast Room needed a lot of TLC particularly ceiling where evidence of historical leaks was very clear. Bathroom was clean but needed a decent make over and whilst bath had a new shower head etc , the water force was totally inadequate.
