Guest Reviews
- Destination614105 (10/5): Felt lucky to have found this little gem. - The breakfast is amazing! The location is calm and quiet. The staff are fantastic and the building itself is so tasteful, clean and beautifully decorated. The pool area is lovely, but sadly as it was April the water was too cold to swim in. This is a great option for someone wanting a taste of rustic, country life in Portugal.
- Companion112276 (10/5): Hidden gem in the countryside - We've been here for the second time.
Above all the place is quiet - with the main road behind the next hill, the premise manages to be quite isolated and tranquil.
The loudest sound is the wind going through the palm tree on site - no engine noises, no people, nothing.
As most of the guests take off for a beach or similar after breakfast, if you manage to have the pool for yourself, it' amazing to unwind.
Staff is supernice and attentive, happy to provide (great!) recommendations for restaurants. They are also flexible - we asked whether they could cook an octopus for Dinner for us which turned out to be one of the most authentic and nice evenings of our entire trip (octopus was amazing too)
- Geoff (10/5): - This is a simple agri-tourist hotel buried deep in the hills outside Tavira. Everything it sets out to do it does well, the rooms are simple but super clean and comfortable, the breakfast and tapas dinner are sumple but limited but prepared with care, skill and attention to detail.. The people are great from the top men to the cleaners.. If you need a quiet reflective break try this, you wont be disappointed.
- Guillaume (10/5): - Peaceful
- Ruben (10/5): - I loved the location and the property. The staff is very friendly and they go out of their way to help you. We had a great stay,
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great stay, really nice owner who was very welcoming and gave us great suggestions on what to do.
- Janhtt (10/5): A hidden gem - What A lovely surprise, this is a real gem, this quiet hotel is tucked away in the hills. The Rooms are lovely and clean. I had a standard room and my son had a superior room. Both were great.
Breakfast was lovely . A car is essential. I would definitely return
- hayleym511 (10/5): We will return asap! - I can't recommend herdade da corte higher than the stars I can give.
Fabulous.
We stayed, lounging around the pool - except for 1 afternoon. We took a taxi into town - €20 each way. If you want to explore the area you NEED a car!
Breakfast is soooòo good - lots of options - no hot/cooked food though.
Won't tell you anymore - it's a secret - come find out for yourselves! 🤗
- Hayleyalan (10/5): Superb - If you're looking for a great place to chill Herdade da Corte is where you need to go. A Rio Grande style and feel about it, surrounded by fabulous hilly views, orange, lemon trees, olive groves, and pure adulterated silence. You hear the whisper of the breeze throughout the outdoor areas which have casual seating dotted about, a sweeping view, and a to die for salt-water pool. If you want 5 star service and a butler this isn't the place for you! Our favourite time of the day was a leisurely hour and half munching our way through the buffet breakfast, consisting of 4 different freshly made juices, a good selection of local produce, bread, rolls, pastries and cake, cheese, cold meats, fruits, yoghurt, and natural cereals - while idly looking out to the hills. There's also an array of teas, and the coffee is via a machine which is good - but goat's milk!
We've travelled the world extensively and it's rare to find such a place. If you want to jazz up your time there Tavira is charming, along with Tavira Island. You do need a car if you stay at Herdade and want to visit many areas, however, we had read other reviews and knew that - but we just wanted to relax there and do nothing! We stayed 4 days and did venture out 1 afternoon to a restaurant in St Luzia. Local taxi, very nice driver. 20 euro each way (same prices to Tavira) about 15 minutes journey. The owners Joao and Francisco are cool, interesting guys, very helpful, and knowledgeable about the area , local produce, wines, and activities to do there - hiking, etc. Good massage also available in relaxing room. €50
Personally speaking, we dossed (an English word for lazing about) around the pool , helping ourselves to the well-stocked honesty bar, with the occasional beer/glass of wine, absorbed in a few good crime novels. Please note: after breakfast there is NO food available until 7pm. We knew that and brought along our own snacks, nuts etc. The evening menu is mainly cold, very good local produce - oh, please try the prawns (they hot). We tried almost everything on the menu during our stay - couldn't fault anything.
My husband arrived completely knackered (another old-school word for tiredness) and after almost 4 days rooted to the place said he felt like the Six Million Dollar Man!
Thank you Herdades, we will be back.

- Sarah (10/5): Exceptional stay - It was an amazing experience staying up in the hills of the Algarve. The views were exceptional and the staff was very friendly. We absolutely LOVED the live portuguese guitar music on our last night
- 416stevew (10/5): Another great stay ! - This was our second visit this year, and once again it was a delight as we returned for one of the live music events which take place periodically. The informality and friendly atmosphere created by João and the team are especially relevant in making guests feel at home. The tapas and drinks served on the circular terrace are delicious and good value and the musicians excellent. It’s great having a pool to cool off in on a hot day, and though this time we slept in the annexe about half a mile up the road we enjoyed the same comfort and atmosphere. Even without the music it’s a charming place to stay ! Breakfast, back on the terrace, was relaxed and unhurried….we look forward to returning again next year.
- stephenp528 (10/5): Another lovely stay - A big thank you to Joao, Francisco and the whole Herdade da Corte team for another lovely stay at their hotel. Nothing was too much trouble.
If you are looking for a charming hotel far from the madding crowd (even in August), then this is the perfect destination.
Nestled in the hills above Tavira/Santa Caterina de Fonte Bispo: Herdade to Corte is perfect for anyone wanting to take time out.
The rooms are very comfortable, the views stunning, breakfast is wholesome and in keeping with the rural Portuguese theme (no cooked options), the bar is well stocked (for most tastes) and the evening meals (tapas) are tasty and a welcome option to busy Tavira, Santa Luzia or Fuseta - which are all nearby.
Car hire is advisable, although you can reach it by taxi and book a room in the main building (subject to availability) as others have noted.
We will be back to our (not so) secret escape in 2024.
- Stephen (10/5): - We loved everything about our brief stay in this peaceful rural corner of the eastern Algarve, regretting only that we hadn’t planned to be there longer. The welcome and introduction to the property was relaxed and friendly, the traditional but comfortable room wascgreat, and a dip in the adjacent pool welcome on a warm day. We knew already that the menu offering was small tapas -style dishes, all of which were freshly prepared and delicious, wine choices excellent and reasonable, and as the place was fairly quiet we valued interesting conversations with the owner Joāo. Breakfast on the terrace next day was equally good, and we heartily recommend Herdade da Corte for a quiet and restful stay in a country setting.
- Vacation45880815917 (10/5): A quiet, relaxing & refreshing holiday in la lovely location. - The hotel is in a rural setting with orange and lemon trees all around, great views. Our room was large with a high wooden ceiling. It was very clean and serviced each day. The hotel is a quiet place with ample comfortable seating inside and out. A nice continental breakfast is served each morning. There is a covered rotunda where breakfast can be taken whilst admiring the views. Tapas type suppers can be provided on request. There is a well stocked bar. The staff are very helpful the duty managers gave much advice on where to go and what to see in the local area. The pool great for refreshing swims and for relaxing on the many sunloungers.
- Sightsee29722835871 (10/5): A place of peace and pleasure - Unlike most guests we stayed a full week. We enjoyed the tranquility, the bird song the proximity to Tavira (14k) and the rest of this idyllic part of the Algarve. Our experience of Herdade was excellent. It was located well for visiting, had caring and attentive staff, was clean and comfortable and was managed by people who both cared about and were interested in us.
We loved the place as did most like minded guests who stayed for too short a time! That benefited us as it often felt we had private dining of delicious tapas or a pool private to us.
If you like swimming our advice would be to avoid the suites and do as we did and take accommodation next to the pool.
We would also stress that it is worth taking advice from the managers as without them we wouldn’t have got the most or most pleasure out of the area. We had salt baths, visited islands, ate squid, octopus and fish, hiked and did the tourist visitor stuff!
- Morbo86 (10/5): Great stay, very nice property - Very nice property with great rooms. Very peaceful and amazing views throughout, sofa's and tables over looking hills and farms - great breakfast and very nice helpful staff. One of the nicest stays we had in Portugal. I would like to go back, we had an 11 month old and they very accommodating.
- Cmmomma (10/5): Lovely stay! - Lovely place. I wish we would have stayed earlier in our trip and stayed longer as the hosts were able to provide great tips for visiting the area. I was worried the pool would be too cold but it was fine for swimming in October. Tapas and breakfast in the beautiful patio were great. Recommend!!
- Mark (10/5): - The property is about 10-15min from tavira and only around 3km from the main road which links all the Algarve coastal towns.
It was remote enough that you could easily retreat there and spend an evening looking out over the valley with a drink.
It was also connected enough that you could easily hop in the car and get just about anywhere in a reasonable time.
- Boyboytraveller (8/5): Very nice agro tourism hotel. - Very nice Agro tourism hotel, located 15 minutes drive from Tavira. Rooms are spread out through the farm. Very peaceful. Amazing views. Main farm house with a lovely swimming pool and very very nice breakfast. Staff is extremely friendly. Highly recommend.
- Lou-Salome (8/5): - Management gentil et serviable. Hotel avec du charme. Petit dejeuner tres bon.
- marshh84 (10/5): Excellent accommodation - Friendly staff - Chilled experience - Accommodation is excellent. Great pool with superb views.
Friendly owners on hand to help with ideas for days out.
Great tapas served all day with meals in the evening if required.
Breakfast is very good.
A really good experience.
We have been four times now and cannot find a fault.
- 280lizc (8/5): Nice stay for a short time - We enjoyed our stay. We stayed in the family suite which is a bit of a distance to the main house about 1km and not easy to walk, especially in very hot weather. From the prev reviews we asked for a kettle which was provided. There was a good sized fridge too. The family suite had a small lounge area, which is nicer than being in the bedrooms and a small grassed area to the front. Beds were comfy (hard), very high though and we put a blanket down to break a fall against the tiles for our toddler. Aircon worked well. Staff were so amenable and served us an early dinner, which was really delicious, nothing seemed too much trouble. Brekkie could have been a bit earlier (8.30) but I get most holiday makers, who don’t have an early rising toddler try and sleep in. Pool was lovely and we had it to ourselves one afternoon. Hotel has a very chilled vibe. One downside is the walls are very thin, despite looking otherwise and we could hear conversations and tv in the room next door, which was a bit annoying late at night.
- Ruth (10/5): - The property is amazing. It is very peaceful. The breakfast provided is excellent. The customer service is outstanding. I highly recommend this property. The only thing is that you need to have a car to enjoy the surroundings
- jorgerM4907QW (10/5): Very good experience - Good quality everywhere
Fantastic pool..silent..only the birds could be heard
Good breakfast
All in good condition
Helpfull staff
Very nice scenery
Totally immersed in nature
Good WiFi
Good parking
Silent rooms
And now only 2 00 characters to
- Linda (8/5): Beautiful pool (lots of flies) - Beautiful views!! Room was basic but large for Europe. My only wish is know one in 17 nights of Paris or Portugal knws what a luggage rack is!!! Options on the floor or on a desk. However, wirh 2 people someones is always on the floor and bending over each time I dont like!! NEED A CAR 100%
- 181christah (10/5): stayed for 2 nights during roundtrip south of Portugal - We enjoyed the stay very much . As the hotel is totally in the nature it s very relaxing . Sitting in the evening on the Terrace with freshly made Tapas and a glass of wine was really great . you can use the pool when ever you want. With the check in we got information about what we can do or visit in the surrounding. I can try much recommend the hotel if you need a time out of work and Stress.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely family run property. Wonderful, helpful staff and delicious food!
- Ines (10/5): Maravilhoso hotel na serra algarvia - Óptimo hotel para descansar e aproveitar em pleno a serra algarvia. Muita tranquilidade e muita simpatia de todo o staff. Para ir sozinho, em casal ou em família.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great place to stay if you have a car. County setting, quiet, cool clean air. Beautiful short drive to Tavira. Need GPS address/coordinates to find location.
- Duarte (10/5): Difficult roads lead to beautiful places... Difficult roads lead to beautiful places... Bem verdade.
- Alexis (10/5): calme et reposant - Magnifique région à découvrir, bon petit déjeuner avec un service au top!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Fantastische ligging. Kleinschalig maar niet te klein. Volledige rust mede dankzij beperkte capaciteit internet. Grote kamer. Mensen zijn vriendelijk. Afstand tot Travira geen probleem. Jammer dat je niet kan lunchen.
- VICTOR (10/5): - Dommage réseau téléphonique et wi. faible
- Carine (10/5): - We had a wonderful time at this property. The room was beautifully appointed (you will even find convenient electric plug converters in the closet), very spacious, with a common living room for the three rooms that are in the unit where we were. The staff is beyond lovely and accommodating. You are just a 15-minute drive away from the tourist spots in the Algarve. It's quiet, relaxing and situated on a vast property with lemon trees and hiking trails. We loved it and can't recommend it enough to anyone looking for some R&R.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Rural paradise - Superb: quiet, peaceful spot. Breakfast good. Only negative; tv in room vintage, impossible to use.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Ruhiges Hotel, der perfekte Platz zur Erholung! Ein Auto ist erforderlich, um dort hinzukommen.
- Gary (6/5): - The property is not in the town of Tavira it is quite a way out (11km) on very narrow twisty roads.
- Gray (10/5): - Superb little hotel high in the hills outside of Tavira. The staff could not do enough for you and the attention to detail and pride that they have in their hotel shines through. Good pool and amazing views. You do need a car to access it but apart from that a great hotel. Will definitely be back
- Michael (10/5): - Wonderful staff, great facility and an awesome value. A very relaxing stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Rurallocation - Great reception, fantastic location. If you want peace and quiet this is it. Food was good and good service. Would definitely come back
- ian (10/5): Place in the hills - WIFI only in communal areas and not in rooms, no tea/coffee making facility in rooms as standard unless you ask for it, dinner not available on 2 of the 7 nights we stayed due to staff shift changes and we were only informed about 1 of those - town 34euro's taxi return away for alternative dinner option if you do not have a car - BUT, location remote and away from it all lodged in the Hills, perfect for walking, biking, tennis, swimming and staff were exceptionallly friendly and helpful. If peacefulness is what you are after - this is the place to be. Access to anywhere else and you are not keen walking - you need a car for sure.
- Roger (8/5): - Very pleasant country-style setting - but make sure you have the GPS setting! Had a wonderful Blues night while there.
- Paul (10/5): - Lovely swimming pool, very quiet location, the food is excellent and the helpful staff make it a very relaxing experience
- Erin (10/5): Restful escape - Get away from the crowds on the coast! Comfortable and clean rustic-style rooms in a beautiful quiet location. A wonderful restaurant and bar are on site. The breakfast includes fresh breads, cheeses, jams, cured meats, fresh juice, yogurt and more. Beautiful terraces overlook the valley. Friendly multi-lingual staff. The road to the hotel is narrow and winding but well sign-posted.
- Kathy (8/5): Beautiful retreat near Tavira! - A wonderful place to relax and unwind. We stayed in " 1 bedroom suite". About 1:2 mile from main buildings! It was a bit inconvenient with no WiFi but the trip back was worth it! There was a beautiful pool and lovely places to enjoy the views! Breakfast was delicious.. plenty of fresh fruits and breads!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - It was a wonderful stay, the only thing is it's far from town and the beach. Also our room was a 15 minute walk from the main house (where breakfast was served etc.) and we didn't have a car. Other than those obstacles tho, the staff was incredibly friendly and everything could not have been more accommodating in service. Just either have a car or rent one!
- Ryan (10/5): 3 Night Stay at Herdade da Corte - We had a wonderful stay at this small, lovely hotel set in the Algarve hills. The hotel is quiet and peaceful, with only a handful of guests meaning the staff really get to know you during your stay and are always happy to help personalise your trip, spending time explaining the best places to explore in the local area.
Breakfast is served on the terrace every morning and you have the option of booking dinner in the evenings, with two different options of tasty local cuisine to choose from each evening.
A car is definitely required to make the most of your stay here as the hotel is very rural (and therefore peaceful) but also only a short 15-20 minute drive to the local town Tavira and the beaches on the Algarve coast. It took around 30-40 minutes to drive to the hotel from Faro airport - the hotel is up a windy country road but well signposted and relatively easy to find.
All in all this is a lovely hotel if you are looking for a peaceful break away from the main tourist trail, and the option of exploring the Eastern Algarve.
- eric (10/5): Friendly staff at secluded hillside country house - We had a great stay over three nights at Herdade da Corte. The friendly staff had great recommendations for beaches to go to and towns to visit locally. The grounds of the house are beautiful with its location in the hills of the Algarve. We enjoyed sitting by the pool, playing tennis (the court is a little dated and bumpy), and walking the property. The breakfasts were very nice--the fresh squeezed orange juice was amazing. We had an economy room which was very clean and generally nice.
- Henrique (10/5): Spectacular place to relax and unwind - A spectacular guest house. Francisco and Joao are always available and Paulo always did the extra mile serving the breakfasts.
Rooms are immaculate clean and breakfast is correct. Views are amazing. Refreshing swimming pools.
Negative points are the lack of wifi in the family suites and the distance between main building and the family suites where we were. Availability of car is mandatory all times.
- Paul (10/5): Tranquil, Lovely & Comfortable - We loved this rural hotel, which is about 6km from Tavira proper. It is out in the country - with abundant cork trees, orchards and olive groves. The views from the terrace/dining area is lovely, and it is quiet and peaceful. The pool is heavenly. We stayed in one of the small apartments, just up the road from the main hotel, which was no problem. It was great to have a sitting room and a bit more space. The unit was spotless. This hotel is not for someone who enjoys an active nightlife - but for those looking for peace and quiet, and to enjoy nature, this is your spot.
- Angela (8/5): - A charming B and B in a quiet, out of the way, position, with a pool. Positives and negatives. A nice welcome with a team of Friendly staff. We were in room 5, which was rather small with a small private en suite. We had to sit on the toilet sideways as our knees touched the wall.
- Paul (4/5): Beware the room type - The "junior suites" are not as advertised. They are located approx 700m up a hill from the main hotel. Best described as a rural motel. There is no pool, WiFi or sun loungers at the suites, you have to walk or drive down to the main hotel. The location felt very isolated and there were a lot of mosquitos in the room.
However they are in a beautiful, secluded location and the rooms themselves are very clean.
I would certainly recommend staying at the main hotel, but not the junior suites.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Relaxing stay - Excellent stay, great location. Staff was very friendly!
- stephanie (8/5): Quiet picturesque spotless accomodstion - We stayed here as they were about to close for the season so very quiet
Breakfast very nice pleasant waiters wonderful views and although we stayed out of the immediate hotel the walk was doable and the beds very comfy and spotless
- Collette (10/5): Peaceful, friendly hotel - We were made very welcome, by friendly and helpful staff. The location is stunning. The pool is very enjoyable. We recommend this hotel. Excellent value for money.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great rural hotel! - Amazing food! Amazing Staff! Amazing location - not the most comfortable beds
- Gloria (8/5): A Wonderful Visit to Portugal's Countryside - We very much enjoyed our stay here. The hotel is in the middle of the hills and the beauty and peacefulness are great. It is a beautiful facility and all of the staff were friendly and warm and did everything possible to make our stay great. Be sure to have a meal there. They prepare a wonderful meal and it is fun to be there in the evenings with the stars all around you.
If you are going, go to their website to get directions as how to drive in, it is a bit of an adventure if not, since the GPS, might send you in a roundabout way that includes some dicey roads. However, if you follow their directions, GPS instructions, you'll find it with no problem.
- Finlay (10/5): 100% recommended! - Excellent accommodation in a beautiful part of rural Algarve - and exceptionally friendly & helpful staff!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Stars like diamonds in the sky - Wifi could be improved upon. But a wonderful stay. Staff were friendly and helpful. Great breakfast. Stars like diamonds in the light Sky. Lovely place.
- Declan (10/5): Excellent food and conversation too - Bear in mind - hotels.com does not - this is NOT a hotel rather a rural tourism house for which there is an organisation in Porgugal as in other European countries. A fine family house on an old estate. It is remote from Tavira town and not very easy to find but well worth it when you do. You need a car. You get a beautiful place, a good swimming pool, tennis court, hiking, touring, simple, very clean accommodation, more Sparta than Athens except for the food and conversation, both excellent if you want to eat and talk with host Francisco and his international guests. Reserve for dinner.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Into nature - Lovely quiet place. Quite basic, warm people and staff. A real away from it all experience.
- Verified traveler (10/5): A quite place in the country. - More like your own private country estate with great ambiance, fabulous food, hospitable staff and an overall friendly and inviting air. The bed was too hard for my wife but they went out of their way to remedy that by our second night.
- David (8/5): A different view of the Algrave - Herdade da Corte is a beautiful hotel set in the hills north of Tavira.
The old farmhouse has been converted into rooms and suites.
The views of the surrounding area are amazing and there is something special about having your breakfast on the terrace over looking the citrus groves.
There is a real relaxed and chilled out atmosphere. The staff will either leave you to yourself or be extremely attentive depending on your needs.
Not for people looking to party the night away in clubs but if you are looking for somewhere to forget about the world for a few days I cant think of anywhere better.
- Debs (10/5): Perfect in every way! - Fantastic location. Superb hospitality. A taste of the real (Portuguese) Algarve. Can't wait to to go back!
- KEITH+DONNA (8/5): A HAVEN AFTER HELL! - when we booked the hotel it was to get as far away from a villa we had booked and left after being left in total isolation with no transport 3km from the nearest town but on arrival we soon noticed this was also very isolated and both thought we had made another mistake. wrong! it is isolated and in the hills but this is the beauty of HERDADE DA CORTE. the views and setting are peaceful and the hotel itself ,set to suit the surroundings. The swimming pool is a decent size and set on its own level. we were given a very warm and relaxing welcome and shown around the place by Antonio who is actually one of the owners and a very pleasant and well mannered man.The rooms are pretty basic with high pitched ceilings and the bathroom looks like an old style police cell which all adds to the character of the place. In the evening antonio made us a lovely meal with lovely flavours (pork fillet was excellent) which was served on the terrace overlooking the hills, a great experience which completely relaxed us after our earlier experience. They operate an honesty bar policy which we hardly used but is a very rare thing for a hotel to do which adds to the ambiance of the place. in summary if you want a very relaxed and chilled out place to go were your custom is appreciated this really is a must and if you want to see places whilst you are there, take a car.
