Guest Reviews
- Tessa (3/5): The George was restored beautifully in 2012 after the fire. - No fresh fruit or Yohurt Having a MANAGER in charge
- Eileen (9/5): -
- Nicola (10/5): - Helpful and friendly staff, excellent food and the room was beautiful
- Phil (8/5): An enjoyable stay at this pub. We’d stay again if we were in the area - Very comfortable room, friendly and helpful staff. We had evening dinner which was good. Good value Not made aware at the time of booking - just 36 hours before our visit, about the very loud live music event in the pub on Saturday night. That said it finished at midnight on the dot so could have been worse.
- Kate (7/5): The room was lovely and very comfortable. Loved the big staircase. Staff were very friendly - Room was great, staff were very friendly The breakfast was nice, but could have been better. Quality of ingredients not the best, fresh fruit option would have been nice
- Lee (10/5): It was a comfortable and pleasant stay - Attractive building, comfortable room and nice bar and restaurant for dinner and breakfast All good
- Denise (9/5): -
- Julian (8/5): -
- Alan (10/5): -
- Jean (6/5): Lovely place let down by loud bar. - Staff lovely building is lovely and location excellent. Good food The bed was very noisy with a very sunken /old mattress, uncomfortable. The bar was unpleasant as lots of swearing with folk trying to eat as well. Very young bar staff really seemed like no one in charge to control the loud drinkers. We all like a drink but was a bit over the top
- tricia (10/5): -
- Miriam (8/5): All good except the noise as above. - Room very nice as was the whole building. Nice decor etc Very noisy on Saturday night. People can cope if staying ,as long as it is quite by 12 midnight LATEST . People were shouting and VERY noisy until after1/30 am. It would put me off staying again.
- Geoffrey (9/5): This was the perfect half-way stopover on the coast to coast cycle - Very good for the price. Dinner in the restaurant was tasty, the included breakfast was great and the room was very clean and had obviously recently been decorated. The upstairs is very smart
- Larisa (10/5): - We love this venue, the bar feels like a real local, you then head to gorgeous rooms, we come back every year
- Rachel (8/5): -
- John (7/5): A fair choice in a lovely small town . - We were welcomed on arrival and shown to our room by helpful member of staff Drew . The room was a good size and presentable , the bed was particularly comfortable. There was an issue with the shower controls but this was sorted out for us. The George walks a fine line between being a hotel and a local village pub , it's not just there for those of us who fancy popping down to the country for a few days ! There was no music when we were there but understand that from time to time there is. We ate at the pub / hotel one evening a the food was very good + reasonable price. . Beer choice was fair being Timothy Taylors Landlord and Tribute on the hand pull pumps. . The breakfast was included in the rate and took the form of a DIY cold buffet which maybe lacked a bit of imagination , it could maybe have been set out with some good bread and local products. We were informed that a breakfast chef is starting soon which should brighten things up.

- Sally (9/5): Would definitely return if in the area. - Room was spacious very tastefully furnished and decorated. Staff very helpful. N/A
- Eleanor (8/5): -
- Paul (9/5): Above average village pub accommodation. - Upgraded country pub with pleasantly surprising size of room. Dinner in the pub restaurant was good. It would have been a good idea to send instructions on where the car park was prior to arrival as it is very much hidden away around the back.
- Catherine (10/5): Charming country Inn - I booked the property because of the price and proximity to the event I was attending the next day. When I arrived I was blown away by the George Inn it was lovely very cosy and full of old character and charm, it’s set in a beautiful little village on the edge of Dartmoor and I will definitely be back.
- Paul (8/5): - An excellent room of character. Clean , comfortable bed. The continental breakfast was mediocre.
- David (5/5): Our stay was fine , room was pleasant and well serviced , food was good . Staff friendly and helpful - Great old building in a great location The external look of the building is tired , the residents entrance is littered with cigarette ends and weeds and does nothing for the first impression
- Rachel (7/5): -
- Vowles (9/5): We had a lovely time and the room was beautiful - Was a little disappointed that we didn't get a cooked breakfast, the options for breakfast was just toast and fruit and yogurt
But we did enjoy the room and the evening meal was very lovely Breakfast was a let down , I understand that in winter months you do not do Breakfast I wasn't aware of this till after I booked the stay on booking.com
We stayed on valentines day so it was a special weekend and a cooked breakfast is what I thought we would get when I booked the stay
- Jeff (10/5): Very relaxing and comfortable - We have stayed previously so new what to expect and once again enjoyed our stay
- Cyril (8/5): Have stayed here before on the way back from Cornwall & will again. - We did not have breakfast. Staff were very friendly & helpful. Evening meal was very good.
- belstead (10/5): - Comfortable, central, staff great and bed comfortable with walk in shower Nothing
- Jacqui (9/5): Relaxing - Lovely room, modern and clean. A cooked breakfast would have been nice.
- Kirstin (8/5): -
- john (10/5): -
- Charlotte (9/5): Great value - Lovely pub, good food, comfortable and very clean room. Would of preferred a room with windows rather than sky lights.
- DAVID (8/5): Lovely accommodation - Lovely room with amazing shower and extremely comfortable bed. No cooked breakfast on the Saturday morning or Sunday morning, only toast or yoghurt, we had been informed by email a week before our stay about the breakfast, but we still paid the full price for the stay.
- Ronan (7/5): -
- Jean (9/5): Excellent place to stay, helpful staff and very relaxed atmosphere. - Lovely staff , very clean and tidy great food and bedrooms excellent with powerful showers. The mattress on bed was sagging in middle in rm 5, likely needs to be renewed!
- Ian (10/5): Great stuff! Nice pint!! - 100% perfect
- Marilyn (8/5): Great accommodation for the price - Great location Very friendly and helpful staff Room warm and bed comfy Lovely white fluffy towels Fresh bottles of drinking water each day Room very clean and plenty of room Great shower - water hot and powerful Can’t fault the room at all The communal areas ie: the pub areas are very basic Very much a locals pub But everyone friendly just a bit rowdy
Breakfast was ‘continental’ as not doing full English at this time of year (February) we were warned in advance However we did expect more variety eg ham and cheese But it was just packets of cereal, bread for toast and jam Some pain au chocolat in wrappers and fruit (bananas and apples) we breakfasted just after 9 and no fruit left on one of our mornings So breakfast could be improved Evening meals very basic but great service from waiting staff We ate there on one eve them found local pubs doing much better food with more choice
Friday night was live music Very loud and could be heard clearly in our room We were warned ahead of our stay and it didn’t really bother us but is a point to note Music was pretty decent tho
- john (10/5): -
- Chris (8/5): -
- john (9/5): - Very clean and comfortable stay.
- Jan (7/5): - All good Smoker's area near the entrance
- Tanya (9/5): -
- Peter (8/5): - Good food
- Tahira (8/5): With our issue they sorted it out very quickly and that was very helpful, made our stay a happy one - loved the welcome, and everyone was happy to help . The room was as expected for the price Our room was as expected but there was a loud noise from the kitchens which we were not alerted to before hand . This was uncomfortable and I wish we had been told about this sos we could make a better choice of where we were going to book
- patricia (9/5): -
- Sally (9/5): Great period Devon property in the lovely village of Hatherleigh. The room was superb and lived upto the images. We had - It was lovely. Good facilities and location for our needs Disappointed about the car parking - when we arrived the car park was full, however plenty of on street parking - just would have preferred off street as per the advert.
- Julian (3/5): Nice pub, shame about the fire alarm fiasco. - The food was excellent. Best veggie burger I’ve had in a pub.
Breakfast was also excellent with a good choice for veggies.
Staff were friendly. Unfortunately, we were there on a very hot night and our room was like an oven, the fan provided was too noisy to sleep with it on.
The fire alarm went off during the night. There were no staff on the premises, and none of the emergency numbers given were answered. One of the guests managed to disable the alarm whilst another contacted the fire service.
I would have expected an explanation from the staff in the morning and maybe even an apology, but neither happened.
- Jacqueline (9/5): Ideal place for us to stay for visiting family combined with the annual festival - Location was ideal
Breakfast was very good Nothing
- David (9/5): Friendly courteous staff, great place to stop over accommodating to cyclists - Very friendly staff and accommodating. We arrived on our cycles in the pouring rain (arrived Thursday 7th August 2025) - Hannah behind the bar checked to see if we could access our room early and we could which was wonderful. Our cycles were safely stored. Dinner in the bar was served by friendly courteous staff. The room (Rm 5) was perfect - we slept with the sound of the village church bells chiming softy in the background. Breakfast was a delight and again the most friendly of George Team Members helped us secure our booking for our return - thank you Kelly. Looking forward to our return on our way back to North Devon.
We’d highly recommend the George. Can’t really think of anything
- Sharan (10/5): -
- Mark (9/5): Good all round country pub with very friendly staff - Excellent breakfast, good choice, generous portions
- Grant & Rebecca-Lucy (10/5): Our stay was perfect - Great pub , very friendly staff the room was just beautiful & facilities provided perfect 👌.
The food was delicious. Nothing
- Dane (6/5): Very pleasant, just the fact that the pub shut early on Sunday evening and had no food. - Breakfast was lovely, staff very nice. Pub shut approx 7 pm on Sunday, even for patrons, no food served Sunday evening.
- Tracy (9/5): Lovely stay, second time here, will be back again, thank you - Gorgeous building beautifully presented, great food at decent prices. Could do with a mattress upgrade
- Cliveyboy (9/5): Very nice hotel room was excellent. Just the breakfast let it down - Evening meal was excellent top chef. Staff was very helpful and pleasant. The breakfast was very disappointing...expected a cooked breakfast but was informed the night before that it would be a continental breakfast ....no continental breakfast was offered just cereal, coffee and fruit juice ...spoilt our stay
- Victoria (9/5): Welcoming and full of charm - Been tastefully renovated. Beautiful period property
- Philippa (10/5): -
- Julie (4/5): Never again ! - Food was very good. Freezing cold room on arrival, only heating was a fan heater which was very noisy.
Fire alarm went off at 5.15am one morning no staff on site. 3 numbers given for emergencies none of which answered the phone , it took several attempts. Eventually a lady turned up, while waiting we were sat outside in freezing conditions. She turned off the alarm and just put her thumbs up. When I asked why noone answered their phones , she just laughed and said she thought it was spam. No apology nothing just thumbs up ok to go back to your rooms.nothing !!
Next day room not made up so left with wet towels as no heat in rooms to dry them.
Would really not recommend.
- Katherine (3/5): - Good location, clean and some friendly staff. Distressing disturbance during the night from other guests who were smoking drugs in their room and set off all the fire alarms for the entire building in the early hours. It was a very distressing and unpleasant experience. We were not sure if there was a fire so genuinely frightened, and the whole hotel stank of drugs. The stench lingered all night, it was awful. We were really worried and couldn't sleep. It was also very stressful trying to resolve the situation in the morning. Staff on duty in the morning confirmed the stench of drugs and tried to understand what had happened but said it was not their fault and therefore couldn't do anything. We had no contact from management or an apology. During the night we were unsure of whether we should evacuate or listen to the people responsible for the who were behaving irratically and shouting and swearing. We were quite intimidated by the experience. We were calling the emergency numbers and trying to alert staff to what was happening.
A shame as during the first night of our stay (we stayed for two nights) the bar staff were very friendly and helpful, they were really lovely.
We did not go for breakfast on the second day as we were shattered from having no sleep and stressed out by having to convey how dreadful the situation was to staff. We had breakfast elsewhere.
We were told that the people who set off the alarms would be asked to cover the cost of our room for the night in question which seemed like a very odd way for a professional establishment to find an appropriate resolution to our experience, and have no idea if this is even possible.
We stay at least four times a year for multiple nights and have several more bookings in place throughout the coming year but have sadly cancelled the upcoming one as we are concerned about safety and would need reassurance that safety and comfort of guests is taken seriously before staying in the future.
- Caroline (8/5): We'd definitely come back - Charming pub, very comfortable room and great breakfast The carpark is tricky to find and was full when we first arrived but there was space later
- Adrian (10/5): Lovely Stay - The staff are lovely here, and it’s nice to relax in the bar area. I was really looked after in the restaurant, and I enjoyed the food during my stay.
The rooms are, well, roomy and very comfortable. I defy anyone to use the thermometer in the room successfully, you can tap away at the dial and it does nothing. Thankfully, there are portable heaters to warm the rooms up.
- john (10/5): - Great place to stay, very clean and comfortable and the staff were fa fantastic.
- Rachel (10/5): -
- alicia (8/5): - Extremely clean rooms. Loved the decor.
- Charlotte (9/5): Great value. - Amazing room, very clean and spacious. Great evening menu, mushroom starter was delicious! Nice breakfast. Only 2 puddings to choose from! 😪
- Peter (10/5): Stayed here while working. Very helpful friendly staff, a large room with a comfy bed and a nice powerful shower. Food w - Lovely building, big room and powerful shower.
- Ford (10/5): -
- Geoffrey (8/5): Location was accessible as visiting relatives nearby. - Excellent cooked breakfast, fresh and cooked to perfection. We were happy with the facilities and comfortable with our accommodation, staff were helpful and friendly.
- Julian (9/5): - A hotel kept at an exceptionally high standard throughout. Really liked the bathroom with massive bath tub as well as an extremely comfortable bed and a decent breakfast. Liked everything. The only issue was the underfloor heating didn't kick-in during our stay so the room was a little bit 'parky' but that didn't detract from our enjoyment of the hotel.
- Sue (10/5): -
- belstead (9/5): - Very comfortable place to stay. It was carnival weekend but they coped with visitors well.
- mabhena (7/5): - Non
- Alex (9/5): -
- Marylyn (9/5): Great hotel/pub in a liitle known but very nice Devon village - Breakfast was good.
Hotel has been modernised very well for an old Inn, that has a lot of history to it.
Very good
- Maria (6/5): Breakfast was good. - Bedroom dark with bad lighting and not able to read in bed.
- Melanie (7/5): -
- Lisa (10/5): A real gem ! - Gorgeous, quaint, cosy place!
Lovely rooms, comfortable beds, delicious food. Really enjoyed our stay. There's nothing I didn't like!

- Jan (9/5): -
- Jonathan (10/5): -
- Paul (7/5): Beautiful building, authentically rebuilt to it's original form in a handy location - Excellent room. Huge bed - very comfortable. Room wasn't serviced, so no clean cups and no replenishment of water, tea coffee etc.
- Harrison (9/5): -
- Mark (10/5): -
- Alex (9/5): 2nd time staying at location, evening food was great, staff helpful, room decent -

- Steve Bonwick (10/5): Weekend at the Geirge Inn Hatherleigh - Great pub with lovely accommodation, food was great too, helpful staff and ideally located for our fishing trip. Nothing at all
- Steve Bonwick (10/5): -
- Paul (6/5): - Breakfast started too late. Presumably there are quite a few guests who need to be on the road by 8.30. So I got no breakfast as I needed to be away by 7.30.
- Matt (10/5): - Great stay with great food All good
- Carla (10/5): -
- Dorothy (9/5): -
- Tim (6/5): -
- Michael (9/5): - Excellent hospitality all round with a good dinner and delicious breakfast. You provided a very comfortable overnight stay on our Devon Coast to Coast. Thank you.
- Caddy (10/5): Excellent - booked again for next year - Fabulous service, despite being an extremely busy weekend. Great location, really nice room. Second time staying here. N/A
- Frances (9/5): Very comfortable character hotel in a great little town - We have stayed here before and find the place spacious with good rooms. We travel with a disabled dog but they have shallow carpeted stairs which we knew he could climb. Had booked the economy room but actually had a lovely King size bed. We didn't dine there this time, but the included breakfast was plentiful. Staff were very helpful. This pub was burnt down and completely rebuilt in 2010 so has modern facilities in an apparently old building. Has a very useful carpark and is right in the middle of town
