Guest Reviews
- Valentine (10/5): Lovely stay & I plan to return. - Decor, breakfast, the jacuzzi. Instructions to access the property from the back deck/porch instead of the front door would’ve been helpful.
- Meagan (10/5): My partner and I had the most amazing valentines getaway here! We would love to stay again!! - The owner was very nice and provided us with everything we needed. The accommodations were exceptional and we truly enjoyed our stay! The hot tub was just a bonus! N/a

- Kari (10/5): Perfect getaway that deserves a longer stay! - The house is beautiful, and the owner is a sweet and welcoming person. The upper room was well furnished with lots of small touches to make your stay more comfortable, like bath robes and a charging strip on the bed side table. The included breakfast was a delicious experience, and I slept extremely well on a very comfortable bed. I was sad my stay was only one night!
- wayne (10/5): John took great care of us - the breakfast was fantastic - - We like everything about the B&B
- Marc (10/5): - A walk back in history that gives you the gentile accommodations and comfort not available in new skyscraper hotels. John, the owner, treated me like family.

- Racha (10/5): - After our 2hr drive, it was a welcomed respite! Our stay was mid-week, so it was lovely to have a quiet stay in the first floor two room suite. We enjoyed excellent wine and jazz playing softly in the background. John made thee BEST pancakes I've EVER had. Our family felt welcome and at home. Would absolutely recommend & return again!

Place with a wonderful proprietor
- Jeffrey (10/5): A Most Pleasant Stay at the Charles Bass House - We were pleasantly surprised at how beautiful the Charles Bass House was. John, the host, was extremely gracious and handled our minimal food allergies with ease. We had what was probably the best breakfast of our vacation. We recommend staying here and if we find ourselves even remotely in the South Boston area again, we would not hesitate to return. Highly recommended!
- James (10/5): - John was the consummate host in this lovely BNB. We had more than plenty of room to move around. The location was just close enough to get to a handful of restaurants and shops with a quick drive but the neighborhood was also walkable and quiet at night. John gave us plenty of good ideas for a day trip and nearby sights.

The place was stocked with everything you could possibly want, food, beverages, towels, flatware, dishes, glasses, etc.

The home is the quintessential elegant, southern mansion built around 1900.

- LHultman (10/5): - This is a warm, comfy very personal BNB. John, the owner, lives onsite. He provides for everything including early check in or late out check out if it is at all possible. The bed is comfortable and the downstairs accommodation is like having your own house. The breakfast was delicious and perfectly timed. All in all, I highly recommend this beautiful place.
- JulianaT (10/5): - The Charles Bass House B&B is a charming property! John, the owner, serves up a lovely breakfast and provides the perfect dose of Southern hospitality. If you are considering booking a stay here, stop overthinking it and book it right now - you won't be sorry. The house is full of windows and natural sunlight, and it is well appointed with top quality linens and appealing decor. The downstairs Guest Suite is huge, the bed is super comfortable, and the whole house is very clean. My husband and I had a delightful experience at the Charles Bass House B&B and we can't wait to stay here again the next time our travels take us through South Boston. Do yourself a favor and book a stay here (or surprise a loved one by treating them to a night or two here - it is such a treat!). I really cannot say enough nice things about this B&B gem!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Our first BNB experience and we loved it. The decor, casual atmosphere, and owner made it a great stay.
- John (10/5): Best in SoBo! - Very comfortable and relaxing stay. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay!
- Kelly (10/5): Absolute Gem! - Hands down best stay in South Boston area. John is a spectacular host, we felt right at home as soon as we stepped out of the car. Breakfast was over the top and was even made meticulously around my many food allergies....I need the recipe for our quiche! We are definitely returning!

- Angiola (10/5): Exceptional B&B - We can attest to the fact that the many positive reviews of this enchanting B&B are accurate. We had a truly exceptional experience in the skillful and gracious care of our host John. Charles Bass House is a lovely home, and John epitomizes the southern gentleman. The home was immaculate, beautifully decorated, and most inviting. John treated us like royalty. He made us feel so welcome and at home. The breakfasts were impressive and served with great style. Honestly, we cannot say enough about what a lovely experience we had. We were very sad to leave and hope to have the opportunity to stay with John again.

- Evelyn (10/5): Loving my stay - My trip was amazing. And the ammocodation ans host was wonderful.
- Elliott (10/5): Beautiful home, consummate host, nice breakfast - Terrific experience from pre-check in until the last moment there. John was the consummate host. I arrived late (early) Thursday morning around 1 a.m. due to late flight and called in advance to let him know this--he asked me what time I wanted breakfast and if there were any dietary concerns. He made a very nice breakfast with coffee every morning! He also would open up the outdoor hot tub in case we wanted to use it after long days spent at VIR (Virginia International Raceway) track for several days of racing. He is very kind, considerate, and overall fantastic. House is very clean, nice, easy to find, has parking and a nice yard. Drawback is that coming from Greensboro, NC (or Raleigh, NC) for VIR track events is a little stretch as it's an extra 40-60 min drive past Danville--both South Boston and Danville are 30 minutes from VIR track. For a wonderful experience though, this lodging is most recommended!
- Dean (10/5): - Stayed for 2 nights as I was participating in a track event at nearby VIR. John was an outstanding host in every way. His home and the accommodations were superb. Likely will return once or twice next year if space is available.
- Spencer (10/5): The best B&B ever! - The best B&B ever!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Quiet and Comfortable - Had a very nice stay in a well kept residence with a pleasant owner and excellent breakfast.
- James (10/5): A Gem! - John - the proprietor - met up upon check-in and we are all soon having a beer / drinking a wine in the porch. Wonderful host, beautiful house and a spacious, well-appointed room.
We were heading to Virginia International Raceway the next day and the drive was an effortless, easy 25 minutes. Oh, and the breakfast John prepared for us was top-notch: fruit, muffins, bacon, and a superb omelet.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Fantastic B&B - Best B&B ever!!!
- Judy (10/5): perfect getaway - We went for a wedding weekend and had a wonderful time...great room, breakfast and conversation with John.
- Larry & Peggy (10/5): Very Nice - Our first stay at a Bed and Breakfast. Won't be our last if others are like this one. Wonderful large rooms. Our host, John, is a super person and fun to talk to. The furniture and overall appearance and feel of this home are wonderful to experience. There is wifi and a tv for the rooms. Nice music played outside the room but not loud enough to be a problem in the room. There is a hot tub ready at all times, drinks, including beer and wine, in the fridge and a nice deck to relax on. Had to leave before official breakfast start of 8AM but John was up made us coffee and served up some fine muffins and fresh fruit even though we had said it wasn't necessary. Definitely a home you want to stay in.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Best B&B Ever - Great!!!
- theresa (10/5): Comfortable! - The host John makes you feel very comfortable. The rooms are large, beds are comfortable. I would definitely stay there again.
- Dianne (10/5): A hidden gem - Had an wonderful stay at this B&B. Travel to this area for work and hotels were sold out...ended up staying here and didn't want to leave. I would come back for a weekend just to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and decor. John was a wonderful host. Will definitely be back as soon as I can! I highly recommend staying here if you get the chance!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great turn-of-the-century home in South Boston, VA - The Charles Bass House is a large, airy turn-of-the-century home in South Boston's near-downtown historic district. Bistro 1888, an inventive and highly regarded restaurant, is a short walk away. It sits near the Prizery, a repurposed tobacco warehouse now hosting symphonies, plays and corporate events. We stayed in the first-floor guest suite. The suite is just off the back deck (equipped with hot tub) and steps from the well appointed kitchen. There is a spacious bedroom, an equally spacious entertainment area, and a modern en-suite bath and shower. The home's many comforts and its proximity to downtown attractions commend it, but its main selling point is its owner, John Fulton, a kind, thoughtful and funny raconteur with a soft Texas accent who knows everyone in town.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great B&B Experience! - Innkeeper is great... Has a beautiful home and truly invites you to make yourself at home. Just a great experience.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Great, relaxing, charming stay - Adorable house with southern hospitality. The house has lots of character and charm. The breakfast, fresh baked banana bread, and muffins were divine!
- Spencer (10/5): Perfect B&B - Fantastic
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great stay,but... - I chose this place based upon the pictures and reviews. Upon pulling up to the house, a huge rainbow flag was festooned over the entrance. There was also rainbow (LGBT pride) items in the kitchen. The website makes no mention, at least that I saw, that it is an LGBT owned/friendly place, nor did any of the pictures show the flags, etc.
I don't mind what people do in the privacy of their own home, but running a B&B & pushing your sexuality on guests who may or may not approve is very off-putting. There were also vehicles parked there with '=' bumper-stickers, I'm guessing were the owner's.
The clothing optional spa was very nice and as I seemed to be the only guest there at the time, I removed mine. But had there been other guests it may have been a bit awkward.
Imagine if you went to a B&B & there where Bibles or pictures of Jesus all over and there were no mention that the owners promoted their Christian faith.
I'm not sure that I would return but I guess LGBT travelers would feel right at home here.
- Christine (10/5): Great stay! - Lovely Victorian home in historic area. Wonderful accommodations with genuine Southern hospitality. Recommend!
- gake (10/5): Fabulous - I came in late around 8:30 pm. I was starving and the owner went to a great restaurant and picked up my food.
- bob (10/5): bed&breakfast - everything was great would go again great breakfast
- Stephen J (10/5): A slight surprise - This is a nice B&B with 2 guest rooms. My only item of concern was that I didnt check the web page and went soley on the Hotels.com assistant. When i inquired if both rooms had private baths the answer was yes. In fact my room upstairs did not have a private bath and I had to travel down the hall. This bath was shared with the owner but in all honesty, he left before i arose the next morning. Not a deal breaker but I expect knowledge/honesty when I inquire. Continental breakfast during the week and apparently a full breakfast on weekends as the owner leaves early for work each week day. I would stay here again, but downstairs!
- Ken L. (10/5): An Enjoyable Stay - The accommodations were clean, fresh, and spacious filled with a warm and welcoming southern charm. My wife and I stayed overnight in the Guest Room located upstairs on the second floor. The Sunday Morning Brunch was simple but elegant. John served us scrumptious French Toast with bacon, a bowl of season fresh fruit, and coffee along with the Sunday morning newspaper. We experienced an enjoyable overnight stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Close to my business - It was very peaceful. I enjoyed the nice back porch/patio
