Guest Reviews
- Bondsammax (6/5): An interesting still-lived-in Quinta that felt old and far from things to do - We were booked here for 4 nights by a travel group, but the hotel is worth only staying 1 or 2 nights. It was interesting to see the property and look at the grounds. The room was large but showing signs of age. Not surprisingly there was no walk-in shower and the run-down nature of the bathroom was a distraction. We met the owner of the property who was quite interesting and fun to interact with. We did have a cooking class with her one night and that was fun. Other food at the Quinta was acceptable but not as good as our fresh made meal. The place is about 10-15 min from the nearest significant town Lamego and challenging to stay at without a car. Worth a short visit to see a family-owned Quinta.
- Tal (6/5): A mix of benefits and faults - The place is very beautiful and clean. There was no wifi available in the room, bathroom needs improvement
- Sandra (8/5): - Room was very rundown as though Expedia clients get the worse rooms. Toilet ran all night, had to get the lamp fixed, curtains were fithy, and entrance garden all overgrown making it hard to enter the room. Too bad- potentially a great place but needs alot of work.
- Michael (10/5): - A different type of hotel set in acres of vineyards this is a good place to stay if you want something a bit different. On the Saturday night we paid for the buffet which was great value.
- sarahlH2DJ (2/5): Such a beautiful location, such a shame.... - I'm writing a negative review, which I don't usually do, because I was very upset to see my friends (who held their wedding at Hotel Rural Casa dos Viscondes da Varzea) so stressed and upset through the wedding due to the owner, knowingly, double booking their event.
My friends had booked the venue for 3 days with full exclusivity - but on arrival the prior wedding guests were still there, and they were told they were refusing to leave their rooms. Later they found out that they had legitimately booked - but the venue put the blame on the guests. We even saw people on the morning of the wedding day, and because the hotel rooms had been double booked, the groom had nowhere to get ready! Personally, I had to stay in another room, 5 mins drive at the other end of the winery which was a bit of an inconvenience, the room was pretty worn down and I found a bug in the bed.
Additionally, on the first day day, 3 coach loads of people arrived for a private dinner in another part of the venue - apparently this has been a weekly event since January, but the venue did not tell my friends or re-negotiated the exclusivity.
The wedding day itself was beautiful, and I felt very sorry for the staff as they were really nice and must put up with a lot of complaints due to the way the venue i s run.
The day after the wedding, they were still meant to have exclusivity, but guests arrived for the following wedding. Which put a bit of a dampner on the pool party they had booked, with unexpected strangers hanging around.
One of the main reasons I'm writing this review is because of the way the hotel managed this - they continually lied and made excuses to my friends, which I think made it worse for them. And when sitting down to renegotiate the price and get a partial refund - the owner had the audacity to laugh at them!
It is very hard to see one of your closest friends cry on the days that are meant to be the happiest and I think that the owners should significantly recompense my friends for the stress they put them through.
- bensH6444TL (2/5): Don’t book an event here - Don’t book an event here, owner tries to get 4 weddings in 1 weekend. Booked for a week with the whole family and yet another wedding who booked the whole place now have no rooms, (apologies to the other wedding, I hope you had a lovely day) our wedding day was lovely until it’s finished and forgot about the next day as the owner moves onto the next wedding. Asked us to move to another property twice and had to tell the owner that we have booked here for a week and we will not move. Food was good but trying to eat anything Halal is impossible.
Open bar means 2 types of drinks….
Feel for the employees getting shouted out every 5 seconds
It’s the most disorganised place I have ever been, surely if you know the next day that a couple have booked the full thing you would not allow us to stay a week??? Felt as though the other group were against us as the owner mentioned we were rude and uneducated as we didn’t want to move to another place with no activities (again the other wedding, I feel for you guys over there)
- F1220HPpaule (2/5): Don’t book an event here. - Lovely place but they double booked for my friends’ wedding causing so much stress. Not to be trusted for important events. Some guests were in rooms far away and couldn’t walk to and from the property. This meant they couldn’t use the facilities.
- Catrin (8/5): - Stunning property and grounds, with excellent service with food and drink.
Our room was a bit tired, with an old fashioned bathroom and no air con.
We found out that the excellent staff would deliver food and wine on request, but no one told us this and it wasn’t signposted! Information about dinner, services, prices for wine etc. should be made clear.
Otherwise, a beautiful and unique experience. Very tranquil and serene setting.
- cordovachick (10/5): A Truly Amazing Owner and Estate!! - We visited this 17th-century wine estate in Northern Portugal’s Douro Valley wine region on an included excursion from our April 2024 Avalon Waterways River Cruise. We were met by Countess Maria Manuel Cyrne, the owner of this family estate (historical quinto) and she led the group to a covered veranda/terrace where we were served wine and a variety of homemade sweets. The countess is a very charismatic character and it’s hard not to like (love) her enthusiasm. She tells us that she was born and grew up on the Casa dos Viscondes da Várzea estate, which had been owned by her family for generations. Due to political and economic changes in 1975 when she was just over 20 years old, it was sold and then fell into disrepair. However, in 1994, the countess and her husband were able to buy it back and restore the manor house. By 2003, the estate became a hotel. She escorted the group through the manor house that included antique furnishings and then a walk-through part of the 400+ acre. We saw the vineyards, fruit orchards, and olive groves. The vineyards produce the manor house’s red, white, and rosé wine. The house also has an exclusive Port wine, which we tasted at the vintage barn along with fruit from the orchards. Arriving back to the manor house, we were given more wine and some wonderful sandwiches and cookies. We also learned about the countess’ journey to motherhood. After 27 years of unsuccessful attempts, including 17 in vitro fertilizations, she finally achieved her dream. At the age of 49, Maria gave birth to twin sons—a true miracle. If we should ever get back to Portugal, we would love to stay here for a few days and enjoy all the amenities this estate has to offer.
- Anama12345 (10/5): Wonderful stay at Douro Valley - Excellent accommodations, wonderful personnel and great food! The owner, Maria, was very friendly and adapted the stay for all our needs. The pool was refreshing, room service every day and food was always delicious. I highly recommend!
- Guillaume (10/5): - Great property
- Paul (10/5): Portuguese Palace - hidden treasure - Absolutely stunning property. Maria and Pedro welcomed us into their home and made us feel like family. Had delicious dinner and breakfast buffet served in their beautiful dining room. The entire working property is classic Portuguese Quninta living. Staff was amazing. Looking forward to staying there again. Highly recommend if you are visiting Lamego.
Ci vuole poco a togliere polvere e ragnatele!
- madisonhK6318NG (10/5): Maria’s Cooking Class - My family and I (53M, 50F, 17F & 13F) took the cooking class with Maria; We were immediately welcome with warm arms & given food/drinks before getting a brief overview of the historic property. Then, we all participated in hands on preparation of our three course meal (very kid friendly w/ a pizza appetizer and pork dinner etc). Afterward, we were given the option to relax on the property (pet their horses, lounge on the deck or eat more food). Overall, the experience is a 5/5 and the views are gorgeous! Very family friendly and worth the cost for the three hours.
- Barbara a (10/5): - This property was a magical experience for us. A heritage mansion set among acres of vineyards. The views were superb. The mansion villa was spectacular in its furnishings, its location, its decor and its staff and owner. We were greeted by Francesco and made to feel at home in this regal atmosphere and public space. Maria, the owner shared the history of the home and land. Our room was huge with comfortable beds and pristine linens. We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast in a dining room with a table set for nobility. The fireplace was lit every morning and the ambience was magical and a perfect start to our day. We spent three wonderful days with easy access to touring the Douro river valley and walking the estate. We will return. Thank you we were blessed to experience such luxury and welcome. Will return from Canada in the future.
- Leonardo (4/5): - We were giving an old run down room. I won’t stay there again if ever in the area.
- Anna (10/5): - My group of six stayed at this magnificent home whose owner hosted us with grace and generosity. The dinner we ate was the best on our northern Portugal journey. We are only sorry we booked one night. We will return for longer next time, for it is a place to revisit.
- Victoria (8/5): - This property was a good place for us to rest mid-vacation. It was not tourist season, so it was very quiet with very few guest. THe food was wonderful as was the staff. The hotel itself was a little on the older side and there is little to do around the estate or area. You will need transportation to go into the Duoro Valley.
- Trina (10/5): - Extremely friendly, hospitable and entertaining host Maria.
The estate is just beautiful - the surrounds, interior decor, upholstery and every detail.
Excellent food and service
One of the best hotels we have had in Portugal.
- amandasH2963XE (10/5): Cooking Class - Highly recommend! This was easily the most special experience my family had in our recent trip to Portugal. Countess Maria makes you feel like family and gave an excellent cooking class that felt involved but not too demanding - the results were delicious. Her and her family’s story is incredibly interesting, and you feel like you are interacting with a piece of the local history. Very charming property that was so cozy in the winter with many fires going.
- Go779393 (6/5): Bad night sleep in a lovely place - Lovely location and just beautiful -- but the bed was super hard and the pillows lumpy. Seriously -- if they would improve these, I could recommend it. I'd go for a meal and walk around. Nice breakfast, nice big bathtub....but the bed....
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Amazing - tucked away, magnificent, friendly, brilliant service and wonderful food.
- Brigitte (10/5): - Aussergewöhnliche Lage
- James (6/5): - This property has so much potential, but…
At first glance, this property is in a stunning setting. 500 acres of orchard, Vineyard, and historic buildings create an atmosphere that feels like it could be four-star. It’s not.
This property is short 4 employees that could take it from a three star to at least a 3 1/2 star.
1. It needs another maintenance person who isn’t just keeping things working, but fixes and upgrades the aging facility: moldy grout in the showers, drooping shower faucets, and broken toilet seats.
2. It needs a groundskeeper who is eliminating all the weeds and grooming the gardens and walkways. The historic nature is great, but untamed it looks messy and feels like the staff can’t be bothered with the details…
3. …which rings true in the food, which is served upon reservation for dinner as $45 fixed price but lacks creativity or presentation. For the $, far better food is available nearby and many places have better presentation and variety. A true chef would add the elegance and quality that takes the food from home cooking to fine dining.
5. A Gardner who is taking advantage of the abundance of fruits and vegetables growing around the property. So much wasted food and looks unkept.
The staff is not professional, and therefore more casual in their nature. It’s charming on the surface, but not 4-star.
Lastly: these are the worst mattresses I have ever slept on. 1 star hostels have better!
TLDRBeautiful venue in need of investment.
- Yasmin (4/5): - I cannot fault the scenery nor the food, these were excellent. The rooms really let this place
- Jan (10/5): - The price of the rooms is high for what you get, but considering the beautiful surrounding and the interesting main building, it is worth it.
Jeorge (the receptionist) is great, very helpful and a true multi-tasker.
The estate is really nice and great walks, but there are signs that a bit behind with the uokeep.
- Marcos (10/5): Step back into time at affordable price - Unique experience to stay here. Really enjoyed it for one night. Not sure I'd stay here for 2+. Love the history and feel of the place but it's older and while it's part of the charm, beds could be updated.
- jeremysZ2827ZS (10/5): Delightful and Unique Experience - We only had one night in this beautiful and delightful place but wished we could have had more. The location in it's own wine estate in the hills is absolutely gorgeous.
The hotel building and facilities feel like staying in some kind of quirky and fascinating stately home.
Every shared area is filled with beautiful furniture and collections of fascinating toys and objets d'art.
The rooms are capacious and well equipped. The buffet supper was massive, featuring a huge variety of dishes for all 3 courses. Something for every taste. The breakfast on the terrace overlooking the vineyards was likewise Fabulous.
Our hosts too were lovely, extremely helpful and welcoming.
The pool is great, if rather cold and with the surrounds perhaps in need of a little tidying up. But otherwise couldn't fault a single thing.
- TheMakk11 (10/5): Muinto bom - We visited here for only dinner and it was beautiful! The views are stunning, the food was great and the staff (Jorge) were excellent. There is a long winding road through the vineyard to reach the Hotel, and when you arrive you are met with spectacular views. I would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Lamego.
- ivis2013 (8/5): Historical old manor in Douro Valley - We stayed for 2 nights in this manor. Our rooms were in the next to main building. Rooms were huge with bathrooms. All the rooms in the manor were richly decorated. While there, you felt as if you had gone back in time for centuries. We had a fabulous buffet dinner with plenty of manor wines in a separate dining room around huge table. You feel yorself like a special guest. The view from buildings are breathtaking. Owner Maria greeted us and chatted with us in every step. They will give you recommendations what to see in Douro Valley. If you would like to live at least one night like contessa you have to choose this old manor for your stay.
- Daniel (4/5): Disappointing - The hotel has great reviews online, but I think that the Coivid-19 pandemic has hit this hotel hard to the point that the old reviews are now false advertising. In short, you'll enjoy this hotel if you enjoy old knick-knacks or paintings of family members - each room is completely filled with them. You may also like this hotel if you like this style and are looking for a wedding venue. However there are a few drawbacks.
Due to a lack of staff or lack of money, the property has not been properly maintained - rooms are dirty, we found a lot of black mold in the bathroom, the backyard garden has not been maintained, and the pool area was dirty with some fountains filled with green algae.
Our bedroom was very dusty/moldy with old curtains and a matching quilt. The mattress was very hard. We had to keep the windows open to allow fresh air to circulate - there was not air conditioning or fans in our room.
We wanted to spend the least amount of time possible in the room, so we decided to go down to the pool. Unfortunately there was bird poop all over the seats and cushions, so we had to turn over the cushions ourselves and then put towels on top to use. The flys are what drove us away from the pool, as there were too many to count. There were fruit trees and horses below the pool and maybe that is where they are coming from.
Lastly, breakfast is free and I'd buffet style. The food is best described as a contenental breakfast plus some slices of deli meat.
- Kamran (10/5): - My wife and I had a wonderful stay at Hotel Rural Casa Viscondes Varzea. We wanted to rest where we would be amazed by the hospitality and scenery. We were NOT disappointed. Francisco and Maria were amazing hosts and went above and beyond to make sure every part of our stay was exemplary. This stay will be one that we'll remember for the rest of our lives. Thank you for such a wonderful time.
All the best, Kam and Mimi
- Yelena (10/5): Amazing - Fantastic stay, attentive, friendly staff and a generously host. PIctures dont do this property justice. Beautiful views all around, room was larger than expected. Could spend a happy week here. look no further for a lovely stay in the Duoro Valley
- Ralf (10/5): - Sehr schönes Anwesen, super-nettes und hilfreiches Personal
- gebhard (8/5): - Unfortunately we had a room in one of the outer buildings,
and handling our 50lbs. suitcases over the cobble stones and steep stairways was a negative. But it is a wonderful property in a wonderful setting.
- Manuel (10/5): - Pessoal muito simpáticos, sempre dispostos a ajudar.
Instalações impecáveis. Nada a apontar
Destino a voltar
- Paulo (10/5): Requinte e qualidade - Simplesmente fenomenal, acolher e requinte sempre presente! Obrigatório uma estadia neste local!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Environnement magnifique.
Repas sympathique et copieux
Seul hic!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This place is absolutely stunning. The views, the common areas and the hospitality were all lovely.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This property is visually spectacular and very comfortable. We really wished we had stayed longer to relax and enjoy the fantastic hospitality. The dinner was fantastic as was the breakfast, held in the most glorious dining room.... a really gorgeous place
- Verified traveler (10/5): Special - The location is fantastic with the manor house situated in the vineyards. The manor house has decades of history with the decor is a collection of the family's memories and artefacts. We only had breakfast which was more than adequate, but I'm fairly sure the dinner would be excellent. Rooms fairly basic but again quaint. The estate is beautiful with a tennis court, pool area and loads of space. Highly recommended for a special occasion or a weekend away.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful grounds, helpful staff, exceptional building...unforgettable!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The place is amazing, full of authentic beautiful furniture and decorations. It's in an old lovely Palace. The rooms are huge. The dinner was disappointing, maybe because we were at the same time with a group so it was in a regular room and the food was ordinary.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely country house full of beautiful furnishings and decorator items with a warm glowing fireplace. Dinner excellent and fresh bread and croissants at breakfast even better. Loved our stay.
- Jefta (10/5): Most amazing place! - This place is amazing. We were welcomed with open arms and the view and property are spectacular. We would definitely come back someday. It’s a very special place.
- james (8/5): - Very cool old farm house that has been in same family for 200 years. HOuse is charming with beautiful salons to sit and read by fire. SIts in a 180 acres of vineyards. Room was so-so... beds and pillows hard, and filled with about 5 space heaters. Rather remote location, but overall worth the stay
- Simon (10/5): Fabulous hotel with the most amazing views - We had a fabulous two night stay in this amazing hotel located only 90 minutes from Porto Airport on some of the most scenic roads I've ever experienced. The hotel is in a very quiet, secluded area surrounded by vineyards and mountains. The minute we arrived at the hotel we noticed how quiet and peaceful it was. We ate in the hotel on both evenings, enjoying a beautiful buffet outside on the first evening and a more formal meal in the dining room on the second evening. The price of the meal includes red and white wine so it is very reasonable and the food was delicious. The breakfast buffet was also very nice with a choice of cold meats, breads, cereals and fruit. We used the swimming pool during our stay and the beautiful setting surrounding the pool is so relaxing that it would be easy to spend a day here reading a book and enjoying the views. The hotel is a 15-20 minute drive to Lamego town. Our bedroom was situated in one of the buildings nearer the pool. The room was huge with lots of wardrobe space. The bathroom was also very big. There was no air conditioning in the room and even though the temperatures hit 38degrees we didn't need it because of the thick walls of the original buildings the room remained cool. The view of the mountains and vines from the room was beautiful. Ricardo and the other staff were very helpful and welcoming and organised our tickets for the boat trip. We will definitely go back to this amazing hotel but next time for longer than 2 nights.
- Adriana (10/5): Luxury in a country vineyard - An amazing hotel in a winery with 180 Acres of land. Looks like a French Chateau complete with fine china, crystal, and magnificent salons. Service is excellent. The only negative is that it is a little hard to find as it is not in town.
- Aurelia (8/5): clean & convenient - This Aparthotel was clean & functional with a convenient location for exploring/walking the city of Porto. Parking is nearby and not expensive (7euro/day). The area is very busy but it is still possible to unload at the front door before going to a parking lot.
- COLLEEN (10/5): Paradise in the country - My husband and I stayed overnight here on our drive around Portugal and Spain, and we totally loved everything about the casa. From our boisterous welcoming by the friendly resident dogs, to the beautiful castle style huge rooms, to the friendliness of Maria and her staff, to the beautiful grounds, we were very pleased. I would return here anytime! And...Maria will arrange to have your laundry done! Perfect. Plus there is an interesting history of the casa and Maria's family
- Sophie (10/5): Fabulous estate in Lamego ! - The owner and staff did everything right! There wasn't anything they would not do to make our stay perfect! We were upgraded to a marvelous suite. They did our laundry. Gave us ideas for our day trips. Fed us non stop. The food was better than most restaurants anywhere. They grow there own grapes. We had the estate wines and port. All in all a perfect stay!
- lp (4/5): not good for couples... only good for big groups - this is a hotel / mansion perfect for big events (wedding, business event, etc.). If you are traveling as a couple, I don’t think you will enjoy your experience like the people who were there with many others. That place is set up to accommodate groups… In their 3 different dining rooms, they only have big tables (for 8-10 people). No table for 2 or 4…
The place is very big. It’s like a museum. It’s old but it also smells old. The view and the garden are amazing and they have a nice pool and a tennis court (bring our own racquets and balls if you want to play).
Dinner was good but way overprice. 29euros per person (for a buffet). I guess they do a buffet on nights that they have events and offer ‘a la carte’ meals when they don’t have events. Since the hotel is far from any restaurant, we still decided to pay the extra price to avoid driving 15-20min to a near restaurant.
It’s true that the place is amazingly nice. If you don’t mind overpaying a little bit, I would recommend going but only for a group event. If you are thinking of going as a couple, I advise you to book your room somewhere else…
