Guest Reviews
- Paul (10/5): Perfect we will back again hopefully dry this time - Everything, firstly the staff, they helped with the drying of our extremely wet motor bike gear as we had been caught in a storm without our wet gear onđ€Šââïž and without Madalaneâs help we would of been riding next day in wet gear (not pleasant) thank you again Madalane. Also all staff were helpful nothing to much trouble thank you allđ rooms perfect too and the restaurant food was excellent, and good nights sleep, the perfect end to a not so good day! Nothing

- Claire (10/5): Cosy and friendly. - Everything! Nothing.
- Cathryn (9/5): Beautiful accommodation in a beautiful place - Beautiful peaceful location, great rooms, food was lovely, the staff were all friendly and helpful. Nothing bad about the property itself, it was a shame that when we returned to the property on Sunday afternoon there was a group of children running around the garden and destroying all the beautiful flowers and they also left smashed glass at the entrance to the field, the staff very quickly cleared it up once made aware.
- David (10/5): Wonderful short break in North Yorkshire - First rate accommodation, we did not have breakfast as booked on a room only basis. However plenty of cafes near by in Thirsk that do great breakfasts. All good, no complaints
- Bryn (10/5): -
- Carol (10/5): Beautiful room, and lovely warm bathroom - I can't comment on the food, as I didn't have breakfast or dinner there, but my room was absolutely beautiful. The bathroom was very spacious and extremely warm. The bath was wide and long. Had a lovely view from the window, onto a slope covered with daffodils. The staff were all very helpful. Didn't have time to explore the village. Would really like to stay here again, and take breakfast and dinner next time. My room was number 12, in the main building, and I would be asking for that room again.
- Viscount Chomnley (9/5): Stayed on Easter Day. Resurrected my faith in the pub industry!! - For once - a pub which claims it serves food and actually does. Great meal, with staff who seemed to genuinely care - a lot of pubs in this country should go and do some training and development here. Congratulations one and all and thank you. The bed. 5/10.
- Martin (10/5): Good for dogs - Perfect for dogs.
- Gary (10/5): Very relaxing place to stay and staff only to happy to help - Full of character Pub that allows dogs , Quiet location in North Yorkshire and easy to get to Helmsley & Thirsk. Quality restaurant and food worth paying for and so love a good quality breakfast (see image) WiFi in a couple of the rooms can be a bit weak at certain times
- Allan (10/5): - Fantastic location and service.
- Michelle (9/5): -
- Natalie (10/5): King room stay - We stayed for 1 night in number 4, it was absolutely amazing, the room was spotless, large comfortable bed, coffee machine, bottled water, toiletries, plenty of teas and coffees to chose from plus little extras like umbrellas and cushions for the outside seats made it an amazing stay. The grounds are beautiful and very peaceful, we felt relaxed as soon as we arrived. Staff were friendly and helpful. Food was great. We will definitely be back We only stayed for 1 night.
- Joanne (10/5): Amazing hotel and restaurant - Amazing place, lovely big room and friendly staff , will definitely be back Nothing it was all perfect
- Andrew (10/5): WowâŠ.. a hidden gem đđ» - Rooms were absolutely lovely. WiFi was great, free access to magazines and newspapers. Netflix on the tv. Every creature comfort imaginable.
Food and drink in the bar / restaurant was fantastic IG only every accomodation was on this level. ÂŁ20 for breakfast is a little steep
- Christine (9/5): Two night stay - I stayed in the Egton superior room separate from the pub, which is in a lovely courtyard situation with a fabulous view. The room was large accommodating a sofa and two armchairs and it was warm and cosy. It had a very nice large bathroom with a bath and separate walk in shower. The large very comfortable bed with a choice of Pillows. The room had varied lighting to give a nice luxury atmosphere. One extra was a torch, so able to walk my dog along darkened streets, with confidence. There was also a small green area beyond the courtyard for them to stretch their leg in the morning. There was plenty of parking on the premises in a well lite car park. No instruction to use the coffee machine. Bit noisy outside on Saturday night and the room needed a little bit of a repaint in areas.
- Maria Elena (8/5): -
- Louise (10/5): Relaxing tranquil and super - Lay out and view of the bedroom Restaurant very pricey
- CaroleS (10/5): Warm and friendly - The food was excellent. I had the cod loin and my husband had the pork belly(both delicious). The accommodation spacious and comfortable. All the staff we met could not have been nicer or friendlier. Mentioned that my husband was not too mobile at present and were offered an accesible room immediately. If you want a relaxing break with good food and service..this is the place. Will be back asap. Leaving.
- Julian (8/5): Excellent food, excellent location/scenery, excellent room and facilities but shame the bed spoiled it. - Everything apart from the bed The bed was 2 single mattresses and was very uncomfortable
- Richard (10/5): -
- Adam (10/5): -
- Brad (10/5): -
- Paul (10/5): Comfortable, friendly, staff amazing and great food. - Staff were amazing as usual and the food was delicious. I should have stayed longer :)

- jane (6/5): Food super room not good overall I would not rush back to stay - Perfect location beautiful food The member of staff who check us in got our names wrong then when I went to pay for our meal again the name was wrong we had been booked into stay under wrong name when checking in which was very embarrassing to my new partner and I
tv in room Did not work all the manger said was sorry ! He couldnât get it to work not anything more !
the bed was really uncomfortable ment to be king size however due to it been two beds pushed together the middle of bed was awful and extremely uncomfortable the room needs to be upgraded picture hooks in wall with no pictures on them !!
Overall it was ok however I would not rush back to stay again
- Julie (6/5): Great accomodation poor breakfast - Rooms were exactly as expected and high quality. Very comfortable accomodation. Although the accommodation is very good, breakfast was poor. Food served was low quality: eggs Benedict sauce was watery. Bacon hard and the whole full breakfast looked like it had been cooked and left standing for a long time, even though we were the only people there when we ordered. Service was slow. Toast took 35 minutes to arrive.
- Terence (8/5): We have eaten here many times. This was our first stay and won't be our last. - Beautiful location. Very friendly & welcoming staff.Excellent food. Room a little hot.Air conditioning would improve comfort of guests.
- Fox (10/5): - The food was amazing the room and location was fantastic. From temple spa in the room underfloor heating drying wardrobe proper tea and coffee and real milk!! Gun safe and good entrance so if you have muddy boots on not to worry. Being gluten free it was fantastic to have a wide choice to choose from. For breakfast there's plenty to choose from again can be done gluten free. The staff were all lovely. The mattress could of done with a topper on but other than that nothing
- Mark (8/5): -
- Ian (10/5): Great experience returned 3 times now - Excellent rooms and friendly staff Nothing
- John (10/5): -
- Jan (8/5): Overall, a lovely spot for a short getaway! - Peaceful location with lovely views. Good quality spacious accommodation. Log fires and a good atmosphere. I was slightly disappointed with the food, but maybe thatâs because my expectations were very high. I also thought breakfast was quite expensive at ÂŁ20 per head, given you could only choose 1 option from the menu, with none of the usual fruit juice and other such smaller items included.
- Paul (9/5): Well worth a stay the room was perfect. - Fabulous room To get tot eh room at night it was poorly lite and the decking was slippy.
- Thompson (8/5): - Nice place.. great location and good staff Expensive therefore not value for money
- Joyce (9/5): - Great rooms. Lovely staff. Excellent food.
- Tina (10/5): Fantastic will definitely go back - It was beautiful, we arrived early and the team were so accommodating.
Had the best nights sleep
- RichardABZ (10/5): Great food, lovely room and friendly, welcoming and helpful staff - The staff, the room, the food, the atmosphere. Thoughtful touches included umbrellas for the walk to the restaurant (25m) in the open air. Will definitely return Can't think of anything
- Alex (10/5): Great rooms, and pub really cosy, with a nice atmosphere. - Lots of space & really comfortable.
- Chris (10/5): - Staff were great, room was clean, warm and comfortable and the food was excellent.
- Colin (7/5): Make use of Winter mid week cheaper prices - Location, facilities, bar Used to be a lovely fire in each room, but now it's a faux effects, which is a shame. The food has been hit and miss over the last few years. It's still average, rather than exceptional. ÂŁ40 extra for breakfast is too much for what is offered. Many hotels who charge a similar room price would include breakfast.
- neil (10/5): Beautiful setting, great restaurant and lovely staff will stay again -
- Michael (9/5): - Cleanliness
- Janet (10/5): -
- Jill (10/5): Loved it.v dog friendly - Lovely room. Great field for dog to run in right beside hotel. Lovely steaks. Friendly staff. Lots of parking. Nice views. Sometimes slightly slow service.
- Stephanie (10/5): Fabulous room - Fabulous room, only slightly let down by empty picture hooks and non working lights. Bed is 2 singles pushed together which made it difficult to cuddle up, but otherwise very comfortable night.
- Elisabeth (10/5): - Couldnât find any fault staff friendly and helpful food excellent facilities great Nothing
- Ken (10/5): Great place - The room was well appointed comfortably. Room super clean and neat staff very helpful and attentive
- Helen (6/5): - Friendly staff, beautiful location with amazing view, very quiet in the rooms. Plenty of off-road parking. Rooms were large and had high ceilings as did the bathroom which was odd. We had a disabled bathroom which we didn't need. On Saturday night the dining room was full and the noise level made it hard to talk to the person across the table and the service was slow as it was at breakfast. The food was very good when it came.
- John (8/5): Great - Modern comfort
- Sarah (7/5): - Lovely room. Very spacious. Unfortunately no milk in my room with the teas and coffees, aside from this, it was a very comfortable stay with lovely views. The restaurant is pleasant however the first thing I noticed about it was lingering smells. A combo of fish and doggy odour which to me was a bit off putting. The food I ordered was nice and well presented but somewhat pricey.
- Kim (10/5): Beautiful rooms in a stunning spot - I actually only booked here because I was travelling through and needed a place to stop in the area, but I'd return again without hesitation â and stop for dinner next time! Friendly staff, a beautiful location, and the garden rooms were wonderful. Plenty of space, comfortable beds, and the fresh milk for tea was much appreciated. I couldn't fault a thing. Nothing!
- Richard (5/5): Nice location, disappointing stay đ pricey ! - Breakfast, food very good, service very slow
Friendly staff.
Lovely quiet location Bathroom fittings loose from the walls!!
Slow service.
Special request for my wife's birthday ignored đ
Damp on the wall in the bedroom.
Problem with the lights fuseing in the bedroom
- strawbs (6/5): - Stayed in garden room . Nice size .
Nice setting Breakfast expensive
- griffiths (9/5): Great food, great room, no complaints from me - Location was great, woke up to a glorious view. Fridge in the room was a bonus Nothing
- mark (8/5): - Location and quality of food.
- Gillian (10/5): - Dog friendly, lovely staff, great service, fantastic food with creative vegetarian options, spacious rooms
- Helen (10/5): - So nice but only there 1 night , never really got to appreciate , the outdoor space, or some facilities. Would definitely stay again if in the area Finding out later the day after we booked we could of had it 25 pound cheaper and including breakfast
- Chris (10/5): -
- Paul (10/5): -
- David (7/5): Quiet, friendly but food a disappointment - Location, atmosphere Food not the best
- Raj S (8/5): -
- Ian (4/5): - A real mixed review because we were misled by the room description which clearly stated air conditioning was in the room. When we arrived it was clear it wasnât and we brought this to the attention of the manager who apologised and said she would contact her manager and get back to us. We contacted Expedia to ask them why their description was misleading and explained we wouldnât have booked the property if we had known. The problem we had was that there was no availability at this late stage to move to. The garden facing rooms do have air con but the in house rooms definitely donât. To make matters worse the noise that you get as you are just above the entrance and exit area is less than ideal. On a positive note the food that we had was good but the room issues spoilt our stay.
Herzlichen Dank!
- Sue (9/5): -
- Adrian (8/5): -
- Patricia (6/5): Really enjoyed the location and the dinner. Bedroom was disappointing, slightly grubby feeling. - Dinner in the restaurant was superb The shower cubicle was showing mould, black mould. The interiors shabby and out of date
- Sally (9/5): -
- Alison (8/5): Lovely place - Lovely overnight stay. Unfortunately there was an issue in the kitchen the night we dined which delayed the serving of our starters. However the staff could not have been more apologetic and reduced our bill without us complaining or requesting this. Great customer service
- Kenneth (9/5): Second time weâve stayed would definitely stay again. - Lovely location, great staff, lovely food.Room immaculate. Room was a bit warm, maybe couldnât be helped.
- Samantha (8/5): -
- Terry (9/5): -
- Judith (9/5): Very comfortable - Location bedroom garden
The lady who did the daily room clean was 5*
- Marie (10/5): 5* - Absolutely loved the place and wouldnt hesitate to go back. Spacious car park, decent food and the rooms are brilliant!
- Miladin (10/5): Perfekt fĂŒr einige Tage - Sehr nettes Personal und ausgezeichnete KĂŒche
Wundervoller Blick ins Tal
Sehr zu empfehlen
- Teresa (10/5): Memorable - Todo!
- Andrea (6/5): Overall disappointing. The price of the stay for one night compared with other 5 star destinations in the Yorkshire area - Location and food very good We always stay in 5 star and so I am used to paying higher prices for a better and more luxurious experience. However I do not think the Carpenters offered value for money or much luxury which would normally be associated with a five star rating. The staff were not overly friendly or attentive on both check in and/or check out and we were not asked about whether we had enjoyed our stay. Our room was tired with paint flaking off, worn sofas and cushions and lots of cobwebs. Service at the bar in the afternoon was slow and there was no outside table service for ordering drinks. From a health and safety perspective I noticed several paving slabs outside were loose and dangerous. The dining room floor also was very uneven in places which could present a risk particularly for females wearing heels. The gardens and flowers outside the garden rooms were overgrown and not well kept and look absolutely nothing like the manicured garden in the photographs.
