Guest Reviews
- Carolyn (10/5): - Ticked all the boxes for our Sunday overnight stay . We will certainly return and recommend to friends and family also
- Paul (4/5): - Ideal position for our day at CATTERICK Races. However food was not good value for money, you couldn’t fill the room kettle up and the window blinds did not stop light coming in from the outside wall lights. No toilet holder!
- wendy (10/5): Lovely place perfect for Catterick races - Staff super helpful and lovely atmosphere had evening meal which was beautifully presented and fasted delicious sea bass £17.95 can't go wrong.
- Sam (8/5): - Loads of space, ideal room for a family
- Fiona (10/5): - Great hospitality, friendly staff team and super food ( great options for GF) too. Well looked after and sort really well. Thoroughly recommend .
- Dennis (10/5): - Nice pub , nice people,nice food
- Samantha (10/5): - Lovely place, twin room was spacious and en-suite shower room very nice. My only issue was as the room was lovely and warm, I needed to open the window which allowed the noise from the busy road outside to disturb me, this is my issue as being too warm bothers me, no fault at all of the establishment, the doubling glazing prevented all noise, just a warning to others if room on the front. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay otherwise and would happily recommend to others
- Janice (10/5): enjoyable stay - the pub is very popular & friendly serving a good a varied menu, we had both lunch & dinner there, the staff are very friendly & helpful . our room was pleasingly decorated clean & comfortable with plenty of storage. only draw back was the shower could do with having a equalizing pressure valve & the macerator was noisy during the night. & please note there is no breakfast served .
- Soonil (10/5): - Really nice place with easy access to Croft Circuit. Room was clean, spacious and well designed. Quality bar/restuarant - which pay for.
Note there is no breakfast service and Sunday dinner service finishes 5pm - there are no alternatives in this village, so you need to plan for that. Overall, happy to stay there again if I go to Croft again!
- Amanda (10/5): - The staff were super friendly and really helpful during our short stay on the C2C. Highly recommend. Dinner was great too.
- Adam (10/5): - Clean and fantastic service with very friendly staff who make you feel right at home. Pub was great and good food, we really enjoyed our stay and the people who worked there were incredibly nice to us. Would recommend to anyone.
- r (8/5): Famiky catch up. - Fantastic public house which serves great food.
There is not much to do in the surrounding Area but its a great place to meet up with friends or family and dine together.
Rooms are failrly reasonably priced and clean. Shame there isnt an option for breakfast.
- Peter (10/5): - Great value for money great food in restaurant and the staff were superb.
Better quality pillows would help with a good nights sleep.
- Marie (2/5): - It was ok bed comfortable but friut flies in bathroom kettle did not work properly so no hot drink bathroom mat was covered in long black hair. We were not happy at all.
- Linda (10/5): - Friendly atmosphere and staff. Nothing that we didn't have to ask. Well worth a visit
- Energy Carbon Ltd (10/5): - Great friendly staff, great food.
Bedroom was clean but a little tired.
Mattress very uncomfortable but that’s an easy fix.
- Deborah (8/5): Lovely clean hotel run by lovely staff - breakfast - Really friendly staff, easy check in. The room was lovely and clean. We ate there too and the food was lovely.
Breakfast was disappointing- a box of cocoa pops and a croissant
I was led to believe you got fruit cold meat and pastries.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - A pleasant place for an overnight stop. Pub style food on site. The staff were very welcoming. Breakfast was a bit disappointing
- Ian (8/5): Nice hotel but had small issues - Was a great place and restaurant food was nice. But carpet had not been cleaned properly. Also the tv died of an reception at around 9pm making it unwatchable.
There where holes in the bedsheet.
No staff anywhere in the morning so had to push key through letter box at front door.
Staff where freindly and polite
- SARAH (8/5): - A good visit. Lovely food in the pub and great service. Dani was particularly welcoming and helpful.
The room was a good size and the cleanliness was excellent. Shower was poor in pressure and the bed too soft and wobbly so when each of us moved it effected the other. There is plenty of room for a kingsize as well. Breakfast for fine and nicely presented.
- r (10/5): - Lovely old pub with fantastic rooms.
The food was amazing
- Robert (10/5): - Good experience
- Mrs K N (8/5): Good service - We had been here before and it had not changed much, but looked a little tired. Understand it is due a refurb in the near future so look forward to returning. Lovely food and fantastic service. Bed could be a bit more comfortable and the room looked out onto the road so quite a bit of early morning traffic to the A1.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - A good makeover would make a difference
- Jane (8/5): Friendly & very clean room. - Very clean room and bathroom.
The bed only had one pillar each, the TV didn’t work and no toliet roll holder.
- Margaret (2/5): Worst Hotel Ever - On the morning of our second day the toilet became blocked. We informed staff at 9.00am. We spent the day out and returned at midnight. The room had not been cleaned, the bed was not made and the toilet not fixed. The water was almost overflowing. We called emergency number and guy came out. He tried to unblock it but said the pump was not working. By this time the sewage water was coming up into the shower. He laid the plunger on the floor which left waste water on floor. He then left and said we would get a full refund. We were left with no toilet or washing facilities. We received a call on the Sunday evening and offered a refund for the one night. We still have not received this but I feel we should have a full refund and compensation for the inconvenience of having no facilities and having to endure the smell coming from the toilet .
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Spent one night and ate at the Farmers Arms on our way to a classic car meeting. Everything as expected and would stay again if passing this way.
- Virginia (6/5): Good in parts - Smart public rooms, bedroom a bit shabby. Great breakfast, very disappointing dinner. Comfy beds, nice towels, bathroom poor. Staff lovely and friendly. Inexpensive and has real ale. Road noise quite loud in bedroom.
- Paul (6/5): shouldn't have taken my booking! - im leaving a neutral review because i didn't actually stay! i booked it but when i got there it was closed!. so they obviously just forgot to show the rooms as unavailable on the website but didn't monitor the booking system either.
i had to drive home instead which i wasn't too pleased about but i got there early in the end so it wasn't too bad for me. just hope no one else got scuppered by their ineptitude!
- John (10/5): - It is a very nice would recommend to anyone.Service and food excellent Clean . Staff very helpful
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I stayed here for 2 weeks. My room was excellent, very warm and comfortable. Great value. Breakfast included was really good.
The bar downstairs is very nice and gets really busy. Food is excellent and prices very reasonable.
Staff are really friendly and helpful. Great atmosphere around the place. Highly recommended!
- Verified traveler (2/5): - We were looking forward to a weekend away, a days racing followed by a few drinks and a nice meal.
What did we get, we arrived to find the place had been closed down. Did anyone contact us to tell us that, NO, shocking treatment, wasted journey, weekend ruined. Would not reccomend this place to anyone after the way they have treated people. Never again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - we did not stay there as the pub closed before our booked date, so we had to find another hotel at short notice
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The facilities were fine, was told they are having a huge complete refurb in 2 weeks so could understand why facilities were minimum. Everything was basic but good. Food was good and always served hot. Staff were lovely and friendly. We will definitely revisit after refurbishment at a later date.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Hundreds of cigarettes everywhere on the floor outside, much garbidge too. The toilet could hardly be washed, the water of the shower could not run away.
- Anonymous (4/5): - Good location when on coast to coast walk. Good food but the supervisor and the employee argued in front of us for several minutes. The employee ended up sitting down and refusing to work. Both were women. The young man who served us was very pleasant. There were several things wrong with out room. The toilet didn't flush properly, the TV didn't work, the door rattled all night, we were right on highway so it was very noisy, the beds were hard and as we were above the bar, it was loud.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - nice friendly, helpful staff Manager and Chef in particular ,food was excellent, would recommend to anyone and very handy if going racing
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I liked the staff. They were very helpful approachable and accommodating. The food was good and the overall service was great.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The colleagues were excellent, the food was good and the service.
The room was ok but needs a good uplift
- Miranda (8/5): Good staging post on the way north - Handy place to stop off on the way to Scotland. Huge tasty breakfast before our road trip the next day!
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Property needs some updating and being run on a shoestring
- Verified traveler (4/5): - No comment
- Verified traveler (4/5): - We liked the standard of the room however on check in we were told there was a private function being held that night so we couldnt have a meal in thd restaurant area. The noise went on till almost midnight. We are pensioners and weren't impressed at all. This morning we came down for breakfast and found two unopened loaves of bread, a few small packets of cereal and toaster. My partner had a cooked breakfast which was good. Hardly 3 star in my opinion.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - All good breakfast excellent staff very welcoming. Ideal location to visit North Yorkshire .
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The property was CLOSED WHEN WE ARRIVED
WE HAD NOT BEEN INFORMED!!
DISGRACEFUL
JAMES A LOVELY YOUNG CHAP WHO WAS WORKING IN KITCHEN KINDLY SORTED THINGS.
- James (8/5): - We had a very pleasant stay at the Farmers Arms. Ideal location for the racecourse. The staff were friendly and meals excellent portions on the large side if you are on a diet.Would stay here again.
- graham (8/5): Race trip - When to catterick races. The farmers arms is located approximately 300 yds from the course. Nice pub good food and pleasant staff. Would stay here again
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The staff were friendly & helpful. The decor was nice, but some areas in need of maintenance. The beds were very comfortable. Rooms were reasonably clean, but bar area not so clean. The dinner was very good. Breakfast a bit bland.
- Andrew (10/5): Race day at Catterick - Excellent accommodation for days at the races. Food was 1st class especially the breakfast and a good selection of beers on offer. Owners are very friendly and will do anything to make your stay a pleasant one. Would recommend the property very highly.
- Colin (8/5): - Unfortunately due to a last minute change of management the restaurant and pub part of this hotel was shut for a refurb, (although it was due to reopen the next night) but they did contact us a few days before to let us know this and said breakfast would still be served but if we needed food of the evening (as we were not due to arrive until late) there were local places or take-aways available. The rooms we had were clean and spacious, on-site worm and clean. The staff we met who on arrival were very friendly and helpful apologising for the mess downstairs (mainly new equipment for the pub/restaurant. We met the new owner at breakfast(which was very good and well presented) who had no taken over 6 days before he was very friendly and has great plans for The Farmers Arms and we will definitely be going back it was a pity we were only booked in for the one night this time. Would highly recommend. Good Luck
- Steve (8/5): - The hotel is somewhat tired looking but changing hands later this week - hopefully new owners will spruce it up.
Despite its looks, the loyal staff gave good service.
- Matt (10/5): - Nice friendly hotel, good location and beautiful food.
- Jonathan (10/5): Wee jem just off the main road - Lovely traditional Inn with local ales ,locally sourced food and delicious meals ! Can't fault this place , and the chef really knows her stuff too !
- Andrew (8/5): Quite hotel near to Richmond - We just had one nightin this hotel as we were travelling from Scotland to meet up with family on the Sunday.Arrived Saturday evening , most welcoming staff and we were shown our room immediately. As you would expect in and old inn the accomodation was quirky but very satisfactory. We had a large ensuite room with plenty of storage space ,tea & coffee making facilities and toiletries in the bath room.Room a little bit tired and could stand refreshing but very clean and pleasing overall. We ate our evening meal in the pub and this was excellent with large portions and good value for money .All the staff were attentive and friendly and a good night was had by all. We had booked bed and breakfast with an extensive choice including cereal toast full english excetra all in with the price. In addition to this orange juice tea or coffee was unlimited. The food was prepared fresh and once again the staff were very friendly just what you would expect in a Yorkshire pub.All together excellent value we will certainly try to call again when in the area
- pauline (10/5): Nice Hotel close to where we were going. - We had a lovely stay if only for one night we will stay there again.
- gail (10/5): Lovely old fashioned pub in a lovely location - Lovely old pub with fantastic staff who welcomed us and couldn't do enough. Comfy beds and a fantastic breakfast provided 😀
- Maureen (10/5): A lovely pub. - Excellent location near to Caterick Racecourse. Good breakfast and a great choice of evening meals.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good location - Very pleasant staff, decent breakfast and very nice room.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good place to stay in a nice location - The hotel had no confirmation of my booking due to expedia not passing on the information. But the staff were very nice and sorted a room out for us.
- Jennifer (6/5): Noisy - From our room we could hear all the noise from the pub downstairs.
- Ian (8/5): Nice hotel /restaurant close to the racing course - Fantastic break nice area nice people very pleasant staff.
- Bill (2/5): Disappointed - I can’t rate the hotel as we didn’t stay at the there because we didn’t get the twin room we booked. Travelling with my father it was very inconvenient after a 5 hour drive and we were not at all happy at having to find alternative accommodation late in the evening. The hotel manager blamed Expedia for a mix up in the booking despite the email confirmation stating we had reserved a twin room.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Average pub on the Coast to Coast - Arrived at 16.45, to stay the night, but the pub was closed. Eventually let in by Manager, who said they don't open until 18.00, but kindly let us in. Had two evening meals for £13.95 which was good value.
- Alan (10/5): Very reasonably priced - Pleasant stay room was very reasonably priced with breakfast. Drinks were also reasonably. Nice quiet area
- Pat (4/5): - The impression of this accommodation was although it was clean there didn’t seem to be anybody there (manager/owner) who had overall charge of customer service. The breakfast although well presented seemed to be served in a chaotic manner and when it did arrive the toast and main breakfast was cold. Also we were woken at 4am by some guests coming in shouting and banging about. This is not ideal as we had nobody to complain to. I felt that this accommodation fell short of providing the service we expect.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - No one available for check in.....had to wait 20 mins to gain entrance. Had an enjoyable time....the food was good and reasonably priced.....both the evening meal which we decided to have at the pub/hotel and the breakfast included in the price of the overnight stay. There was a quiz night on the night of our stay......we were welcomed to make up a team and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. Description of pub/hotel being located in Richmond proved not to be the case as it was in an adjacent village which made finding it very difficult. Parking good.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Nothing to do long way from need car
- Verified traveler (10/5): - thank you so much - staff so nice and helpful wonderful food!!! we had a lovely nights sleep and a hearty breakfast that set us up for the day.!
- Goldie (8/5): Cheap and cheerful - Hotel staff are pleasant enough, and the food is very good, but the rooms are a little below par a bit tatty and very dusty.
- Kerry (10/5): - Quaint hotel. Friendly staff. Good meals. Located on the C2C.
- Angie (10/5): Great value for money - The staff couldn't do enough for us and were very friendly and professional especially Phill, the food was lovely and their friday night steak deal was brilliant.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Very basic b&b - Did the best with what they had but very basic
- Richard (10/5): Stay here for good service RECOMMENDED - Great place to stay welcome very friendly, breakfast good plenty of hot water for washing etc. We had two evening meals very good menu and reasonable prices.
On the down side room was cool but they provided an electric heater very quickly which resolved the problem. Bed was comfortable enough but made lots of noises when getting in or turning over have not laughed so much in years.
- Steve (4/5): Stopover going south - First impressions entering the bar reception area were good with friendly surroundings and pleasant staff.
Unfortunately behind the scenes the accommodation was poor even allowing for it being an old building. There is no excuse for a bed where the mattress is 6" smaller on width and length than the base and where the slats under the mattress are screwed onto the frame with projecting screw heads; positively dangerous. I have photographs but can't upload them.
Restaurant food good with attentive staff.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Worse place I stayed so far - Mould in shower. Nobody there on my artival at 4:30. Nobody to serve breakfast which I ordered.Old soft bed. Next to busy junction. Just very bad overal.
- Mick (8/5): Good value for the money - Very friendly staff. Good location for Catterick and Richmond and A1 access. Excellent food.
Darlington is an excellent shopping centre.
Plumbing for shower and toilet waste water and drainage needs improvement.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Friendly staff in a traditional roadside inn - The Farmers Arms is easy to find on a B road, a short drive from the market town of Richmond and not far from the A1. It's a relatively old building, so expect sash windows and Saniflo toilets, but the twin room looked recently decorated and was of a good size. This may be an odd comment, but the bedding smelt great - wish I had their detergent! The heating worked wonderfully. The pub stopped playing music at a reasonable time and I had a comfortable night. Some traffic noise is to be expected, due to the proximity to the main road and the single glazed windows.
All the staff were very welcoming and helpful and the breakfast was bigger than usual - I didn't go for full English, but selecting toast got me 6 full slices. I also had dinner there and there was a good choice on the menu.
There is plenty of free parking both on the forecourt of the pub and in a car park round the back by the beer garden (which might be more convenient for unloading and loading the car, as the entrance to the bedrooms is round the back).
All in all I had a comfortable stay at a reasonable price, ideally situated for the next stage of my journey to Richmond and points north.
- lesley (8/5): Very friendly staff , gorgeous food. - Our only complaint in one of the rooms ( we booked 2 ), the mattress didn't fit in the bed frame , it was to small so make sleeping difficult because kept rolling into the gap !!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice place and well situated for us - Really nice place , comfortable room , staff really nice breakfast was lovely
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The only problem we encountered was the toilet in the en suite that flushed its self on one or two occasions. The staff were more than happy to call an emergency plumber, but the problem self rectified.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Place was locked up when we arrived to check in, with no indication how to contact anyone.
- Graeme (8/5): - Lovely pub hotel, rustic exterior but contemporary interior and comfortable bedrooms. Despite the lack of food on site due to kitchen issues the location was ideal for other local amenities. Highly recommended. Thanks.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Farmers convenient for A1 - Convenient place to stay travelling up and down A1 Shame they had a kitchen fire so can't rate the food! Room comfortable nothing spectacular but then for £60 for B&B what's to complain about! Friendly staff very helpful.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Our stay - We didn't arrive till 11-45 but just phoned and there was someone there for us.The only thing that was wrong with it there had been a fire in the kitchen so we had to go out for breakfast, the room was very comfortable ,we were only there one night but we liked it ,I could say how easy it is to get there as we got a lift and don't know the area so it's hard to judge .
- Lin (8/5): Unusual, old quaint hotel - Could not check in until 6 - not noted when we booked! Luckily someone was next door to let us in. Noisy bar downstairs until 10 pm. Good food!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Handy for the races, just a five minute walk away. - Breakfast good. I am coeliac and the chef Coped well. The toilet in the room was noisy and not very efficient . I would use this hotel again as it served its purpose. Easy access to races and a bed.
- James (8/5): Food is amazing, tasty and great value - The Food is amazing, I would recommend this hotel and restaurant the everyone. I will be stopping here again.
- Sylwester (2/5): - Smelly room:-)
- Megan (10/5): Great welcome - Great welcome room clean excellent varied menu.Food in resturant great breakfast was huge.
- Jon (6/5): Farmers Charms! - Plus:
OK for the price. Food satisfactory. Staff very friendly.
Minus: The bed was awful. Mattress is just plain worn out. At breakfast the cleaners was polishing brass and it stank the area out. She then turned on the vacuum cleaner and hoovered around the table whist we were eating.
- Bernard (6/5): Good value, informal pub experience. - Friendly staff, good beer and wine. Food was hearty and filling, typical British fare.
It's an old building, so well worn and creaky in places.
Pub quiz was audible from my room above.
- Verified traveler (10/5): very convenient for A1 north - No problems. excellent service. nothing else to say
- Kate (8/5): Felt at home - Room was made to feel homely with the little touches, the staff were lovely and couldn't do enough for us. The breakfast was great, full English I would order again. This is a room above a pub so there is noise from the pub until later on (we booked on quiz night so there was a slight bit extra) but we still slept through it. So maybe take ear plugs if you're a light sleeper. And there's also a Saniflow system which is always in these older buildings, just meant we couldn't flush the toilet in the middle of the night as we didn't want to wake people up with the noise. Not off putting, just something I think people might want to know. All in all a lovely stay, and the garden is massive and lovely seats front and back to relax.
- Nicola (6/5): Very noisey - Overall the place is lovely but as somewhere to sleep - no, to eat, yes so my review has mixed feelings.
Food - we only ate here the one night, which was our first night stopping. My son ate off the childrens menu & myself & husband ate off the 2 for £13.95 which we both enjoyed.
The breakfast each morning was lovely & cooked to perfection. We had to order by 9pm the night before what we wanted & for what time also, which was fine. The first two mornings we were greeted by a gentleman chef & our table was set for what we ordered but the third morning we were greeted by a lady chef who did things slightly different - no tea/coffee cups ready, no cereals out for my son & she got the order wrong so we had to wait. Not a problem, but the main issue is the cleaner who is doing her job in the main bar area where you eat breakfast, thats fine if you don't mind chewing on polish as you eat your bacon, or inhaling bleach as you sip your luke warm cup of tea. It felt uncomfortable & as if you were invading her space, not the other way round.
On a whole though the food is lovely & if in the area ever again I would eat here & certainly recomend it.
Now for the accommodation - we were in the family room which sleeps four, on first impressions it is very nicely decorated & modern, my sons room was separate from ours which is a plus factor. Then we walked in & literally every floorboard creaked, the windows are single glazed so very noisey outside & also the pub is noisey.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Stayed for one night in a family room. Very comfortable and children liked it. Food was excellent - we had dinner and breakfast. Handy place to stay with Richmond very close and Catterick racecourse is just up the road. Staff very friendly and helpful.
- Elaine (6/5): - We booked here as we were going to the races so ideal as its only a few minutes walk away. The hotel itself was lovely and the food was excellent. We stayed in the family room which was great as it had a separate bedroom area with twin beds ideal if you have kids or a typical teenager like us who want their own space.
- Geoff (8/5): Excellent dining experience - We stayed for one night for a visit to Croft racing circuit. the Farmers Arms is well situated for this venue.
The staff are all very helpful and friendly. The evening meal was very well cooked and presented and I would recommend any visitor to eat here. There is a good choice of beers, well kept. The breakfast was quite big and kept us going all day.
There is a very pleasant beer garden to sit out in the evening. The cost of the stay was very reasonable and all in all we would stay here again when visiting the area.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Go for the full English breakfast - We felt quite sorry for the Farmers Arms, as roadworks on the A1 and slip road closures made locating the pub almost impossible.
Three phone calls and a 45 minute detour finally proved that the pub wasn't in the Bermuda Triangle.
Nice beer, friendly staff, and a pub restaurant made up for it.
Go for the full English Breakfast- excellent.
OK for an overnight stay en route to Scotland
- Mr N C (8/5): A fair stop over - A reasonable stop over very handy location to the Bases nearby. The food is excellent although I wasa little disappointed with my breakfast. Even so I would still use the Farmers again if I had the need I still view it as fairly good value. The plus is the menu selection and the cooking, it seemed popular with the locals for a Thursday evening
- David (10/5): Homely - Lovely people and good food would come back here again
