- Gerhard (8/5): Comfortable and hospitable - Modern and close to the river We booked when full breakfast was stated on Booking .com. Got a continental breakfast instead. We were notified about this by phone a couple of days prior.

- susan (10/5): A very comfortable and modern experience in a lovely old pub. - The dukes head is in a lovely location, peaceful village with plenty of outside seating. The only thing I would say is with the continental breakfast, the refill of croissant, cereals and milk as they were being used by the guests, meant there was not enough on offer, as it was not being replaced quickly enough for the guests coming in a bit later.

- David (5/5): Would not stay here again - Good Shower-overall the room was clean and well decorated as was the rest of the pub Very small room, no light where the desk was. No food available not mentioned on website or on booking.com until i telephoned to enquire about the menu. As we checked in we were informed the bar would close at 8pm. Breakfast was very poor no ham only salami -tinned fruit- watermelon and some pastries and cereal.

- Stuart (8/5): Comfortable hotel and extreamly dog friendly. - It is very close to Fox & Pheasant pub, has they do not have a restaurant here. Very dog friendly hotel. No mention that the breakfast is continental when booking and also no mention of additional cost of £15 for dogs. Both of the above were not mentioned until receiving a phone call once the cancellation taste and time had passed, even though I sent message upon booking with no responses.

- Lynn (8/5): Good stay, great staff, needs a kitchen. - Great location with good road and rail links to nearby Carlisle and other towns. Decor inside and out was immaculate and well presented. Staff were exceptional, friendly and a real credit who made you feel at home. The room was spotless and had good facilities, tea/coffee, hairdryer, fan on asking. There is a bar downstairs which opens at 4, however whilst we were there closed very early as there were no other customers. A mobile fish and chip van parks up on Thursday evenings which is very popular. Sadly the kitchen has closed due to personal matters and the owners have decided at this time not to reopen it. Therefore only a Continental breakfast is available and no evening meals are on offer which is a shame as I believe this has added to it being so quiet. The Fox and Pheasant nearby does do food. There is a village shop behind The Dukes Head which sells sandwiches etc. We stayed three nights and on two of those we were the only guests. Very quiet, sometimes a good thing sometimes not.

I doubt I’d find myself this way again but if I did, I would definitely stay again. It is a wonderful gem of a place which definitely deserves more attention. Struggled with the WiFi, we weren’t given the passcode on check-in - mobile data coverage wasn’t the best. The kitchen staff weren’t in last night and it would have been ideal to grab a bite in the pub but the nearest pub for food wasn’t too far away.

We decided to stay in the B&B after a few nights camping as a treat but I'm sad to say my air bed was more comfortable! It would have been nice if the restaurant was open or we knew about the restaurant being closed before booking.

- Katrina (6/5): Great rooms and looked like a fab pub, but only just a bed for the night on a Monday - Great size rooms, very comfortable and the duty manager on call was friendly and helpful. Easy to find hotel. Just want to flag that if you stay on a Monday night the kitchen is shut, this wasn't clear at all at the time of booking (the details even said something along the lines of 'the restaurant will be open during your stay') I only found out the restaurant was shut after messaging the property and at rfsr point it was too late to cancel. If you are looking for an easy one night pitstop just be warned about that...we ended up back on the motorway for a service station dinner. The duty manager was friendly and kept the bar open for us to have a drink which was fab, but the place was definitely closing up for the night and it felt very empty and not very relaxing to stay in the main area. I understand it's out of season, the Duty Manager seemed on their own (and doing their best!) and apparently the weekday stays are only just starting up again, but it's just worth knowing about the kitchen being shut for future bookings.

I appreciate the extra effort and wouldn’t hesitate to make a return visit. The bed was a bit too firm for me. Maybe a soft topper would sort that out.
