Guest Reviews
- Philippa (10/5): A perfect pub with rooms - We had our wedding reception at The Eagle & child 17 years ago. We stayed for one night yesterday as a trip down memory lane. The fire was roaring when we went into the pub which was a gorgeous welcome on a grey and rainy day. It feels like a proper pub- friendly staff and locals. Love the quirky decor with all sorts of random objects that have been collected. The lighting make it feel cosy. We sat all afternoon chatting and drinking. We went up to our room which was spotless and tastefully decorated. All we needed for a nights stay.
We then ate in the pub - fantastic gourmet burger!! and stayed for the weekly Thursday club which was good fun.
An excellent stay, perfect pub and highly recommend the accommodation. Thank you
- Ruth (10/5): - We had another lovely stay at The Eagle & Child. It offers great value for money. The rooms are tastefully decorated and the bed was extremely comfortable. The en-suite shower room was a good size and the shower was powerful and hot. Tea and coffee making facilities in room with complimentary bottles of water were appreciated as were the chocolate biscuits. Breakfast was included with a great selection of fruit and cereals and a good selection of cooked options. We opted for a full Cumbrian which was cooked fresh and was a very generous portion with quality produce. We also had lunch and evening meal in the bar and both were very enjoyable. Staff and service were friendly and helpful and we look forward to our next stay
- Denitsa (10/5): Clean, modern room and lovely views. - Great hotel, room was clean, modern and had everything we needed. The view from the room was lovely and the beer garden by the river was a pleasant surprise! The staff was kind and polite and the food was delicious and plenty. Just one thing that would be more of a recommendation than a critique - I would suggest the breakfast offers other meat options alongside pork.
- Michael (8/5): - It was in Staveley
- Alan (8/5): - Nice pub to stay in as there isn't many places close by. The beer garden overlooking the river is nice. Food was excellent and breakfast was lovely.Staff were very nice and the waiting on staff were very busy on the Wednesday evening especially Sam eith his sqeaky shoes.
- helen (8/5): - Lovely seating area along side river. Spacious room. Comfortable bed.
Friendly, efficient staff.
- Graham (10/5): no complaints - Had a great stay food and location good
- Roland (10/5): - Staff very friendly, food great and rooms lovely.
- Lesley (10/5): - The Eagle & Child is a cosy characterful pub in a quiet village just outside Kendal. It's our favourite place to stay for visits to relatives in the area.
The staff are friendly and welcoming, the rooms clean and cosy with comfortable beds and well equiped bathrooms and the breakfast excellent.
This was our third stay and it won't be our last.
- Barbara (8/5): - Fab breakfast, only bad point extension leads in bedroom, all else spot on
- Andrew (10/5): - Lovely olde worlde pub with a good range of beer and food. Rooms were clean and had everything we needed for our stay.
- Christine (10/5): - Lovely accommodation friendly staff and excellent food. Definitely worth a return visit
- andrew (10/5): - We had a lovely stay at the eagle & child, very clean, staff very friendly, breakfast and evening meal both excellent quality can't fault.Pub has a lot of character.
- Jonathan (10/5): - Even though it was probably the wettest day of the year, the welcome from the staff at the Eagle and child was warm and friendly. We arrived early and they gave us our room anyways, comfortable pub style rooms, with small but efficient bathroom set-up. Cozy bar with a fire going, great for pre-dinner drinks. We ate out with friends so can't comment on dinner choices but the breakfast was amazing. All in all good value for a comfortable pub stay
- Katherine (8/5): Huge loft apartment - Great loft space, ideal for a family.
- Michael (8/5): - Had a very enjoyable stay. Friendly, helpful staff. Excellent breakfasts and good choice of tasty food at bar and restaurant. Delightful riverside garden. Only downside was that our room was a little small.
- Richard (10/5): Fantastic stay. - Lovely location next to river in a beautiful village. Best breakfast I’ve had whilst staying in hotel/B+B. Staff super friendly too. Couldn’t ask for more!
- Jenna (10/5): - Lovely room, great breakfast and excellent dinner
- Lorraine (10/5): - Very comfortable room. Great breakfast.
- Joanne (10/5): - Great place has a lovely beer garden across the road beside a river. Lovely to sit and have a drink or a meal.
- Jonathan (10/5): Nice accommodation in Staveley - Nice place, clean, comfortable and friendly staff. Good place to break The Dales Way walk.
- Lauren (10/5): - Excellent stay as always. Best breakfast about !
- Luiza (10/5): - Nice little room with a big bed
- Russel (10/5): Check this place out - Perfect location for the lakes -Afternoon spent around Windermere [5min drive down the road] - We used it as a stop off on the way up to Murrayfield [Edingburgh] which worked out perfectly. Old English style pub with bags of character, spent the early evening by the open fire talking to the locals before dinner and the Quiz night. Highly recommended; we will be back for the lakes and some Fells.
- David (10/5): - Top class in all aspects and I travel a lot and am quite picky. Lovely country pub, food top notch, great range of real ale. Couldn't really fault.
- Julia (10/5): - The Eagle and Child offered a very pleasant stay, in a local pub. The staff were all lovely, helpful and polite, the food was very good, the rooms were clean and comfortable. The location was good for me as I wanted a stop for 2 nights as driving up to Scotland. Price was good. Definitely stay again.
- John (8/5): - Good stay .but bed uncomfortable. Good food .
- Paul (8/5): - A shame the pub was closed on arrival, which meant we had to go searching for a restaurant in the rain after a long journey from London
- Ina (10/5): - Charming old building in a pretty location. The staff was very friendly. Our room was comfortable and clean, and the bathroom was nicely updated. The beer garden next to the river was especially nice.
- kristian (10/5): Great stay - Great pub , nice food , excellent service felt very welcomed indeed. Room was very clean too
- Andrew (8/5): - We had a great 2 night stay for a wedding in the local area.
- N.W (8/5): Nice little hotel with good restaurant - Good location just 5 miles from Windermere. Pretty quiet.
Room smallish but quite acceptable. En-suite clean with easy to use shower unit. Dinner service busy but able to cope easily with table of 7 - my wife; daughter, Husband and 3 children - all with different choices. Prices moderate in today's age. Take care Room 4 and 3 (?) overlooked bus stops with easy view into the room. For courtesy sake, I would suggest net curtains/ blinds as a useful addition.
For a small family run hotel, staff as you would expect, friendly & helpful. Major defect for us was the 15 tog duvet - much too heavy. We had to pull it off soon after climbing in. Cover was quite heavy enough!
- Richard (10/5): Enjoyable stay - We had dinner at the E&C a couple of years ago so knew that it was cosy.
Attending a birthday party at Caris Green GC we remembered that they had rooms here.
Six of us (in three rooms!) had a really comfy stay and an amazing and plentiful Cumbrian breakfast.
Loads of walkers using the pub with its handy function room providing a spacious dining area to add to the busy pub.
- pauline (10/5): - Loved the traditional pub feel. Staff were friendly and very efficient.
- Lauren (10/5): - Fabulous room with everything you would need for a short break. Fantastic location. Breakfast was delicious and the staff were friendly and helpful through out the stay. Will definitely be returning.
- Nikki (10/5): - Great location, nice food & friendly staff
- Sue (10/5): - A lovely hotel, with super staff. The room and facilities were excellent, and we had a great dinner. I highly recommend it.
- Mike (8/5): - Quiet location on river convenient for purpose. Lighting a bit dim as no main light in room.
- Chris (10/5): Great place. - Great location and accommodation and an excellent bar as well.
- Michael (10/5): - Very nice property excellent choice of food. Staff very welcoming.
Ideal for what I needed.
- Nigel (10/5): Lakes Mini-break - Great atmosphere, open fires, good ale and food.
- Sean (10/5): Great place to stay - Love our stay. Great real ale, real fire, real friendly people.
- Kathleen (10/5): - The breakfast was fantastic the best we have had at any b b we have stayed at. 10/10
- Janet (10/5): - Lovely country pub, good food at breakfast and evening meal.
Quick and friendly staff.
Car parking.
Excellent value.
- Brian (10/5): - Visiting friends in the area. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Bar food and service both excellent. Staff did not enter the room but provided full set of new towels when we asked for them. Room was nicely furnished. WiFi was good, TV was good, shower was excellent. Bed was nice and firm. All in all ... excellent
- Susan (10/5): One night stay at Eagle and Child - Lovely stay at the Eagle and child , welcomed by lovely friendly staff, great room comfy bed, excellent food.
- karen (10/5): Location perfect. - Stayed 2 nights .Very clean all round. lovely setting Comfortable room and bed. Poweful shower and hot water. No tea or coffee making facilities in room but asked if we could possibly have a kettle etc which was happily provided and promptly placed outside our room with all we needed .Staff welcoming and friendly. Staveley has its own train station about a 5 minute walk so left the car at The eagle and child and travelled by train to Windermere then by open top bus to bowness for the day. Reasonably priced and regular service took the pain out of finding somewhere to park .on returning both evenings showered changed had a meal in the pub one night which was ok and had fish and chips the 2nd night from local chippy which were Reasonably priced freshly cooked and tasted lovely . Both nights the pub was busy Thurs night quiz night which a lot of local people came to partake in. Some people had to be turned away for food as most tables pre booked inside .we didn't book a table but luckily for us they had reserved a table for us as we were residents had a pleasant time both evenings. There is also a nice beer garden round the back in a grassed area and also one across the road overlooking the river which food can be ordered and eaten in both these places. Will definitely return this is at the top end of my top 10 places to stay
- Dieter (10/5): Perfect little pub - Absolutely lovely in every way. The pub is straight out of central casting. It’s exactly as an overseas visitor would envisage an English pub to be. Great food, fun and friendly staff, wonderful atmosphere and perfect clean room, great ensuite and super comfy bed. Lovely indeed
- Steve (10/5): - Room was nice, bed comfortable, good shower, staff were friendly
- Ken and Jane (10/5): - A really lovely place to stay. Spotless rooms, friendly staff, excellent food. Would stay there again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Gorgeous food! - Our stay was really lovely. The room was very clean and comfortable. Staff were welcoming and helpful. We stayed for one night and enjoyed the friendly atmosphere in the pub for the evening and enjoyed the gorgeous food. Breakfast was also delicious.
- Mark (8/5): - Great food quality and value at this pub
- Bruce (10/5): Great couple of nights in Staveley - Spotlessly clean room. Great location. Wonderful staff. Excellent food. Good beer (it's in the Good Beer Guide) and it's even within a short walk of the Hawkshead Brewery Tap. Heaven!
- Karen (10/5): Lovely autumn stay - Great stay, nice rooms, stayed here a few times now and i think the food varies with who is actually the Chef that day, as this stay wasn't quite as nice as last time.
would stay again though as it is a lovely place.
- David (10/5): - Lovely stay at a great pub. Superb location.
Would have liked to have tea/ coffee in the room
- Adam (10/5): Very welcoming - Phillipa and the team were wonderful. We were arriving by bike, beset by bad weather and mechanical issues so arrived after dark. We rang ahead and they were able to not only reserve us a space for dinner but also to take a pre-order so that we weren’t in danger of missing the kitchen. A warm welcome awaited us, a good night’s sleep and we were given a hearty breakfast to get us on our way the next day.
Highly recommend this place for cyclists as they are also just down the road from a huge bike shop who sorted us out with some repairs on our way to John O’Groats.
- David (10/5): - Pleasant welcome by staff and that service continued throughout our stay. The food was excellent and the Cumbrian breakfast kept us going all day!
- Barbara (10/5): Absolutely great pub to eat, drink & stay. - Room was really lovely, bathroom great with heated towel rail which was needed even though it was August! Very comfortable bed, fabulous breakfast & the staff were friendly & efficient. Just cannot fault it, superb & would definitely recommend it.
- ron (10/5): little gem - From arrival to leaving the Inn, everything was brilliant from the warm welcome on arrival to the goodbye on leaving.
We were very pleased with our room and the view across the river, evening meal food was outstanding couldnt really fault the staff even though they were under pressure they seemed to cope brilliantly.
Wouldn't hesitate to stop here again nice and quiet yet everthing on hand and only a short drive to Windermere
thank you
Ron & Maggie
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We had a great stay at The Eagle & Child Inn. Everything but the weather was great. Great staff, food, beer. Even had a fire going in the bar (in August) which was great as we had got soaked getting to lake district on our motorcycle. Thank you.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent modern spacious clean room tastefully done. Large comfortable bed.
A great selection of cereal & fruit for breakfast & the Cumberland breakfast was superb this sets you up for the day.
The staff are very friendly & courteous, would definitely recommend staying at the Eagle & Child again.
- Debra (10/5): Friends reunited - Friendly staff. Excellent range of cask ales. Very tasty, reasonably priced food. Good portions. Fabulous River Garden kept clean and glasses tidied regularly. Bedroom very clean although ours was small with a Queen-sized bed. Will book larger room with larger bed next time. Excellent location with efficient bus service stopping outside B&B. Breakfast very very very good.
- Terry (10/5): - Lovely place to stay. Very clean and friendly and the food was amazing. Will definitely stay again
- John (10/5): Fantastic find. - Fantastic find. Lovely old pub with nice clean rooms, very friendly staff and very good food. Located in a very quiet and pretty village with a stream running through the pub garden. There are also 3 breweries within a mile of the pub but I was more than satisfied with the 5 real ales on offer in the pub. Will have to return to checkout the breweries. The full Cumbrian breakfast was a real feast and the bacon from the local butcher was excellent.
- Andrew (8/5): Nice Place to Stay. Clean Tidy. Friendly. - Check in was 4.30/5pm. Check out 10am.
Room was a touch small, but it was the last one they had.
All very clean, Great breakfast to set you up for the day.
We ate in the restaurant downstairs very happy with our meal. Staff very helpful and polite especially the young lady waitressing on the breakfast front. We only stayed one night but happy to recommend.

- Louise (10/5): Fabulous - We spent a fabulous 4 nights at The Eagle and Child. The staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and friendly, and nothing was too much trouble. Our room was really comfortable with a lovely view of the river. Breakfast was amazing and even though we were the only people staying one night there was still a wide selection of fruit, cereal etc to choose from. The cooked breakfast was plentiful, hot and delicious. The pub decor is unique and lovely and we enjoyed an excellent meal there each evening.
We would highly recommend and will definitely be returning.

Great location, the beer garden was perfect, perfect for a trip to the Hawkshead brewery which is just a few minutes walk away, also be sure to check out the Blind Chocolatier which is by the brewery.
Breakfast the next morning was MASSIVE, and yummy
Would highly reccomend the Eagle and Child, we will be back.
- Roger (8/5): - Homely unpretentious atmosphere. Roaring open fires in bar. Decent pub grub menu, efficiently served.
Double room spacious with 2 armchairs - something surprisingly lacking in more upmarket establishments.
Reasonable price in excellent location on edge of most popular part of Lake District.
- Elaine (10/5): - Nice place. Small room and bathroom but very clean. Couln't get TV to work at all the time we where there and no one from the hotel tried to get it working either. Did have small problem with radiator but was very quickly fixed. Only place to eat in the evening and although food quality was good homemade pie chips and mushy peas overpriced at £14.00. Lovely breakfast.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great value for money breakfast was beautiful , rooms spacious and clean
- Christopher (10/5): Lovely place - A very warm welcome, they even let me stow my bike away. The food is great and it's also a lovely pub. A great place to stay if you want to explore the Lake District.
- LynneM. (10/5): - My husband and I stayed here for two nights and we can recommend and applaud this inn highly. Right from the outset, we were warmly welcomed by friendly helpful staff and the owners Denise and Richard especially made time to speak with us despite their busy days.
The room was spotless and comfortable with all we needed. The bathroom was lovely with good quality toiletries and the food was delicious, fresh and wholesome. Nothing was too much trouble and we can thoroughly recommend here for a refreshing happy break.
We hope to return soon and in the meantime, we say thanks for finding such a lovely traditional place to stay.We are glad that such homely traditional places still exist! Thank you from William and Lynne M.
- Kathryn (10/5): - Lovely clean room and friendly staff. Only a short walk from the local brewery and a great base to explore the rest of the lakes. The food was also delicious! We would definitely recommend.
- StephFraser (10/5): - Excited about our first break away since lockdown, and wasn’t disappointed! Had a bobby dazzler stay here. Spotlessly clean, with all new COVID conditions adhered to, but not affecting the charm and comfort of the pub. Very warm welcome, with nothing too much trouble. Booked table for evening meal, which was delicious and fab value. Breakfast was perfect too - much needed to soak up all the celebrations of being out in public and enjoying a beautiful part of our country. A perfect place to stay for anyone, with the added bonus of being ideal for those wishing to explore the local area. Will be back! Massive thanks x

- Jane (8/5): Fabulous food and excellent breakfast. - Lovely pub with fantastic food at a reasonable price.
The room was a bit cold cold and took a while to heat up. Otherwise a comfortable stay.
- Jeff (10/5): Excellent service and vegan friendly - Excellent service, great beers behind the bar, nice food. My wife is vegan and there were several choices on the evening menu and there were options for breakfast including a vegan cooked breakfast. Highly recommended and we will return in the future
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Room was excellent and breakfast and ser ice spot on.
- Malcolm (10/5): - A wonderful place. Room was great, bar/evening meal/ atmosphere was brilliant , but get in early because it is very popular. Breakfast really tarnished my experience though. Order did not reflect what I ordered and even when it got replaced it was not nicely presented. Otherwise it was faultless, I imagie that breakfast was probably a blip for some reason best known to them
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great room and really good breakfast.
Perfect location
- Peter (10/5): It grew on us... - The initial impression was not good - the bar seemed very dark and gloomy - but this reaction quickly passed when we saw the nicely finished though compact room, the comfortable beds and the decent shower. We enjoyed an excellent, good value, meal in the restaurant with friends and the breakfast proved to be first class with fresh fruit salads, strawberries, yogurt, cereals and hot food cooked-to-order. Altogether an enjoyable stay and very convenient for Kendal.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good service friendly staff good breakfast and a selection of local beers nice beer garden
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Lovely lication, extras such as extra pillows, iron much appreciated. Excellent breakfast
- ben (10/5): - 2nd visit. Love it and will be back
- MARK (10/5): Fab! - Fabulous place, staff, food, area all amazing! Will definitely be back for return visit!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Not the best time to arrive in the middle of a Beer Festival, it was heaving and quite noisy, but everyone was in very good spirits. Room clean and smart, quite small but didn’t spend much time in it as out exploring the area. Breakfast was lovely with a good selection to choose from.
- Andrea (10/5): Break away - The Eagle and Child in Stavely was a very good choice of stay. It was fantastic location, good food, good drinks, good beer garden and very friendly and couldn't do enough for you, staff. We will definitely be there again fantastic overall place to stay
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great time very clean and meals great. One down side. It was noisy as our room was above the bar.
- Mr Simon R (10/5): The Eagle and Child - a gem - This is a hidden gem. The staff on Friday night were excellent, Kyle and Molly helped when bad traffic delayed our arrival. Molly also helped when we need to organise an alternative breakfast. A great location with fantastic staff.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Lovely comfortable quiet room. Good meal in restaurant, but rather noisy.
- Mark (10/5): - Good honest food, both in the bar and for breakfast, great selection of ales, nice cosy room but most of all very friendly and helpful staff. Love staying here.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The eagle and child serves excellent food and a good range of drinks all at good value
