Guest Reviews
- Tony (6/5): - For a one-night stay, it's not bad for the price you're paying. I stayed on the top level, and it was very noisy due to streetcars, and the showers were very small. Overall, it was a quick night.
- Keisuke (4/5): - Wi-Fi doesn't work
- Mia (8/5): Excellent! - Love it! Very nice Hostel, nice people.
I really enjoyed my stay.
Thank you.
- Pedro (4/5): - The property's location is superb, but even considering it, the place is pricier than it should be, as the building is old and not particularly well maintained. The staff is friendly and tries to be helpful, but the bathrooms collapsed during our stay, and we had to move to another hotel.
- Timothy (8/5): - This hotel is located in a very location close to The Strand and theatre district. Whilst it is old, there is lots of steps and maybe some of the areas have seen better days for the price you cannot fault it. I have stayed here a couple of times now and I would again. I sleep well when im away but if you are distrubed by people chatting, thin walls and doors being banged this probably isn't the place for you. Im shocked people complain though about this hotel considering its location and value for money.
- Honghui (6/5): - Location is great, facility is very old and outdated, beds are very uncomfortable. Staff is very nice.
- Abrayanti (2/5): - HOSTEL - NOT a hotel. No amenities. No WiFi except for in the tiny office area. Paper-thin walls, loud slamming doors on rooms, squeaking springs/hinges, etc. SO LOUD. Decaying shower and toilet rooms. Tiny rooms with no lamps and broken everything. No mattress covers (gross); lumpy, weird mattresses and pillows (only 1). Windows thin and barely functioning, curtains old and falling apart. Everything pretty unpleasant and cheap and old. IF you are fine with a funky youth hostel, and you can sleep through anything, then cool! If not, pay the extra £50 to stay elsewhere. I don’t know how they get away with being classified as a “2-star hotel”. The small Indian restaurant seems really popular = the only place that anyone is enjoying themselves in this building. Good thing: Hostel staff were nice.
- Rowan (10/5): - Wonderful location and lovely staff!
- John (8/5): - Best location but hostel is in dare need for improvement.
- Keith (2/5): - In the ghetto.
Welcome to a bad stay.
- ed (6/5): Brilliant location, not perfect but cheap. - Although I accept that you get what you pay for there were a few things that I thought should be fixed. There was a tap in the bathroom that was broken, there were many tiles that were broken, a door to the bath that wouldn't open fully and made access difficult. As for the bedroom, I had a pillow that appeared to have a spot of blood on it. The rest of the stay was generally ok and just gave me a place to lay my head.
- Jeremy (8/5): - Great location of the hostel
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Condition of hotel was poor.
I unlocked my room and the handle came off.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Really good mainly because the staff were friendly & helpful throughout my stay.
- mohamed (6/5): - the location is good but the services is poor
- Elaine (8/5): - Basic room but fantastic location
- BRIGITTE (6/5): - The best thing about this property is the location. A mere stones throw from most attractions BUT the question is would i stay again and honest answer is no. I understood its a hostel but the condition of the property is in dire need of a lot of TLC . We had no heating, not hot water, tbh the tap barely worked at all. The mattress was aweful as was the door slamming all through the night. Reception was friendly and were accommodating but that was it. Id suggest getting a room at the back of the property to avoid street noise.
- Alex (4/5): - No hot water
- Adrian (10/5): - All fantastic, well pleased
- Elaine (8/5): - Convenient location
Bedroom clean, beds comfortable and clean.
Reasonable price
- Mark (8/5): Difficult to find - Good location, single rooms which is rare. Very difficult to find as evetything on Strand Road starts with "The Strand". Indian Restaurant signage out the front very confusing. Otherwise very good
- Juanita (6/5): - Our stay was ok. We just stayed one night. You get what you pay for. The staff we encountered were all really friendly.
- Bacel (4/5): - I left my staff in fhe storage area. It solen. They never care about the customer.
There no body in the reception most if times and the breakfast not good.
- Bacel (2/5): Strand hostel - The rooms fine generally, how ever the breakfast wasnt so good.
There is hotel manager who dont know to sopve any case.
- Carl (4/5): - Staff were friendly. Hotel really isn’t great though.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Poor breakfast - It wasn’t a Continental breakfast, it was scotch pancakes, cereal or toast.
Only one member of staff in the dining room who seemed very disinterested
- Miss Debora (10/5): Great value for money!!! - I was very pleased with the place, especially the cleanliness and kindness of staff. The bed had a fantastic mattress, i had a great night's sleep. Lovely breakfast, served in a beautiful room!! The only down point was the fact that i was on the top floor, so A LOT of stairs to climbe!! Great value for money, I'm well pleased and would go back certainly!!!
- Nicholas (4/5): Disappointing - Unfortunately were disappointed by our experience at this hotel, as they had accepted our booking with 2 of the 3 rooms placed 'on hold' as they didn't actually have the space. They didn't inform us until we arrived and so I had to scramble and arrange alternative accomadation instead of enjoying our reunion after the pandemic. Friendly enough service just not an efficient operation, can't comment on the rooms etc as we never saw them.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Overnight stay at the strand - It was a pleasant stay from top to bottom. Prior to making reservation, several customers had commented on the noise level but I did not find it to be true. The restrooms were clean, as with the showers, heating and hot water also were available. The room I had stayed in was spacious and had all necessities needed for a short stay.
Reception staff was friendly, helpful and welcoming, a wonderful stay indeed.
- William (10/5): Central London - Nice place , nice location , friendly staff - free breakfast
- Jaime (6/5): Dont bother jaime - Next time prevent smokers at front door from stenching the entrance stairway and the eating areas call ghost busters someone was causing trouble dripping gue into peoples mouths
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely lovely people!
- Abubakar (10/5): - Clean and comfortanle hostel. Near to the city center, public transportation and all services needed
- DAVID K (6/5): Leaves a Lot to be Desired - For location it would be hard to beat. And it did seem pretty clean considering it's rather run-down condition overall. Otherwise, it leaves a lot to be desired for a hostel --- the very minimal offerings for breakfast, no in-room security for belongings, few if any hooks where needed for hanging clothes, toilets that do not fully flush at times, automatic lighting that tends to go out at the most inconvenient times, no laundry facilities, no WIFI in rooms, no towels unless you pay ridiculous extra price, no paper towels for drying hands in bathrooms or elsewhere, etc.
- MR MARK K (8/5): - The hotel is dated but clean and value for money.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Location was great, in the middle of town and next to the river, easy to get to the Underground. The Hostel was terrible, dirty, run down and outdated.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Did not stay, no lift rooms 3rd floor and up. No disability access. Perhaps you can refund me??
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Affordable place to stay in London. 3 dorm was incredibly cramped and up about 6 flights of narrow stairs. The close quarters made the snoring of strangers very difficult to sleep through. Nowhere for bags or to hang jackets in the small space.
But very friendly staff and vintage breakfast area — tho the breakfast was more than sparse: bread, butter, instant coffee/tea, ...
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Location, location, location! And the price was definitely right. That said, will look elsewhere next time. I can accept older, a bit run down etc. But there are little things a property can do that are very simple and costs hardly anything. The shower had one tiny hook in the room. The bunk beds were cheap and rickety. Every movement heard and felt. The only mirror is in the room, nothing in shower room. Makes shaving difficult when you’re trying to respect sleeping roommates. No hooks in room either. Small shared closet though so that was ok. Public areas were charming, however for a period in the evening it’s unclear if you’re welcomed there as it becomes a busy bar for street traffic. So awkward place if you just needed to relax a bit and use the wi-fi. Very nice staff and the included breakfast, although basic, was appreciated.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The location and historic connections are extremely interesting.
Reception staff very nice and friendly.
Will recommend.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Most challenging “hotel” I ever stayed - 1. Pics on website are misleading. The entrance of this “hotel” is unlike what you see on website, with a Grand sign board across the building. It is just a time entrance, with a leading staircase of 23 steps to the receorion. NO LIFT.
2 Water for shower has been cold thru my stay, and the weather was cold. It helped the owner to save a lot on water bills as no one would enjoy bathing under cold water.
3. Reception gave an excuse the water is cold because there was construction works around. NOT TRUE. this situation has been happening for months if you read other reviews
4. Nothing was done even after conveyed the problems to the reception
5. All the 42 rooms are cleaned by only ONE lady who is also in charge of the breakfast corner, and a man who does vacuum. So what can we expect?
6. My skin was itchy the first night sleeping on the stained bedsheet
7. You will have a window which is filled with dust and unable to close, forced to “enjoy” the cold wind in cold weather since heater is not working
8. Breakfast is MOST basic, break, Low grade spread, cereal and tasteless milk, self made coffee powder and that is all
9. The staff in the “hotel” are trying their best to do their job under such limited and challenging facilities
10. I stronger urge the owner to renovate the place, to provide tourists with a better impression of London visit.
- Richard (8/5): Dated, but I loved it. - I really liked this hotel - yes, it is dated and has shared facilities, but it is like going back in time. The India Club meal was outstanding. Overall it was fantastic value for money.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Great location, central to theatre district and we'll appointment shops
Property itself, while bare bones basic, there is no reason for premises to be shabby, worse for wear and tear, clogged toilets, sink faucets barely worked. If want place to park your body, sleep horizontal on a mattres at low cost it is a place to choose
- Caitlin (2/5): Not worth it. At all. - Hope you enjoy carrying heavy luggage up several flights of narrow stairs with no help, and no wifi in your room! Staying here was a Dickensian nightmare.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Bad experience - I stayed there because my reservation at another place had been canceled, but I didn’t enjoy my stay, the bathroom was dirty, the bed uncomfortable, the breakfast terrible. It was also very loud!
- Kevin (8/5): Okay place to stay in a great location - Overall mediocre place to stay with great location. Overhead light was out in our room and showers were difficult for our taller guys in our group. But for the price it met our needs for a quick overnight.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The location was wonderful but if you are wanting any decent sleep I wouldn't stay here. I had a single room but I could hear everything from my neighbours beside me...until 6 am when I had to get up and only had 3 hours sleep because I was woken up by them. I also had bad jet lag so slept in a few days, there was no sign to put on the door to do not disturb so the maid banged on the door loudly and before I had a chance to say or do anything she opened the door with her key.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Excellent location!!! It is very close to museums, galleries and theaters.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Liked the location and breakfast. Didn’t like the window in the toilets.
- MARGARET (10/5): Good stay near Waterloo - Staff is super friendly. I always get a single room, and it’s always clean, and quiet.
- Antony (8/5): Overnight for a catch-up! - comfortable single bed, warm room with WHB, friendly and welcoming staff. No en-suite so used
separate facilities, each WC and shower was separate.
the WC was clean and tidy.
Separate shower, light didn't work so couldn't use it as it was dark.
Used separate bathroom to shower in. Water was hot but movement sensor light turned off after about 9 seconds of stillness, so had to keep dancing in the shower to avoid being plunged into darkness instantly!
- Shireen (6/5): Basic room for the night great location - Spot on in the centre for theatres, breakfast is a very basic continental, good luck if they lady actually speaks to you , had to ask for more plates and cups as nothing was out it seemed like she didn't want to be there , no cooked breakfast or even the option , the room is very basic there is a kettle and tea and coffee, had to put kettle on floor as no plug near the draws which it sits on , for just a bed for the night and the cheapest in the area it was ok
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Stayed in a single room, was clean and very basic. Could literally hear everything around me, so thin walls. Felt safe there as a solo traveler. Great location!
- Olivia (2/5): Do everything you can to avoid - Bedroom was lifeless, bathroom had a broken shower head. Would recommend staying outside of the city for this price and enjoying your place of stay. Unless you have -0 expectations. We had none. We are 23. It was worse than that. Don’t understand why the owner doesn’t put a tiny bit of money into it. The pictures are fake, it’s an Indian restaurant that looks beautiful in the pics, it’s below the hotel and offers a ‘breakfast’ milk and cereal.
- Barry (6/5): single person visit. - This a basic 'cheap & cheerful' hostel. the rooms are clean but need updating.
The bathroom facilities are also clean but have seen much better days, they are also small.
WIFI coverage is not available on the higher floors.
- C (10/5): - Cheap, basic, clean and in a great location - what more can a man want. The staff were very helpful and made nothing of the mess I made when I arrived sodden with a dripping folding bike.
Very pleased with my stay. Lovely people. Thank you.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Should of read the reviews! - This is a hostel. Do not expect anything fancy. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The location is great, Covent Gardens are a short 3 minute walk away and the tube is just as far. The bathrooms are shared, meaning that everyone on your floor is sharing them. Wifi is available in the lobby and breakfast area only, and breakfast is unlimited toast with cold cereal. If you need a place to crash at a discount price then this is your place.
- Stephen (10/5): A hidden gem - cheap and cheerful - Excellent price, lovely welcome. Perfect for a budget based trip. Location excellent.
- Stephen (10/5): Great stay! - I always stay here when in London for the rugby.
Unbelievable value and location.
Staff superb!
- David (2/5): Rooms toilets are dirty and stinks - The rooms are small and very dirty
Stinks
- Verified traveler (6/5): - best value priced hotel in London. expect what you pay for. fruit at breakfast would have been nice and some maintenance to shared shower light motion sensors is needed.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Terrible Nightmere, The receptionist was very rude - It was a nightmere, worst experience, very poor customer care.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Easy to find, good location, good price for shared room.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - fabulous location but don’t expect a luxury night.
No one at the reception when I walked in at 6pm. 1 électricity plug for a room of 4. Good breakfast for the price
- Verified traveler (10/5): Wonderful stay... - I had a wonderful stay at Hitel Stran Contentinental! The front desk people were very friendly , welcoming and so very helpful..! Excellent location ! Hotel was very clean and beds were soft..excellent day and evening views from my bedroom and restaurant .. area windows.
- Yin L (6/5): The Strand Continental Hostel. - There is no lift. The photo on Hotels.com not true image. Basic amenities are missing in the bath, toilet, bed not comfortable and noisy at night. Breakfast basic. Location is central and walkable to most attractions.
- MARGARET (10/5): Great stays! - I’ve stayed a few times at Hotel Strand Continental. Recently, I’ve have a private room on the 6th floor. It’s great! Big window and much cooler upstairs in this crazy heat! The bathroom and shower rooms on the 6th floor are always clean and the service is great!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Clean rooms to sleep! - The room was quite clean, but the shower room smelled a bit of urine...being a hostel and a shared bathroom, it may be what you expect, but it could be kept after more often, or leave a mop inside so people can mop up after getting out of the shower. The noise from the Strand is a bit much, so try to get an interior room. The staff was great, and the hostel itself is quite.
- Bruna (10/5): Great experience - This place was just what I needed. Had a great night of sleep in a small but comfortable private room and enjoyed the extra perks—great location, 24/7 reception, free luggage storage, quiet and clean facilities, and a beautiful common room filled with plants and books.
- William (6/5): All right for a night - What we wanted was a bed for the night and this we got. for what we paid the hotel was reasonable. The position of the hotel makes it a good place to stay in the heart of theatre land and I would stay again.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Not impressed - When arrived the stairs were very steep so when walking to 6th floor it was hard. Not even a lamp in the room so was either darkness or bright. Strange layout and at times the room didn't close properly so had to slam it
- Mary (8/5): London April 2018 trip - This is my second time to stay here. It's basic but clean and does give breakfast too.
The location for my purposes ( meeting up with friends, going to shows and sighseeing ) is fantastic.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - My stay was great.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great Location and Friendly Staff - The room was in a great location and the staff was very friendly. Only complainant is that it was really noisy at night with the traffic outside
- jm (2/5): Will not stay again - No hot water to shower
Cold and dirty room
Staff used their hands to pick bread while preparing breakfast
No lift in the building
You have to carry the lugguage to upstairs though the staircase is very narrow
- A (4/5): the only good thing is the location - The only good thing about the hostel that it is very close to city center. The staff is polite and nice. However, rooms, shared bathrooms and toilets require refurbishment. Breakfast was poor, three types of flakes, pancakes, bread, butter and a few options of jams. Definitely, there are more pleasant hostels for the same price or even cheaper.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The location is excellent, and ideally situated to gain access tomthe best of London
- Jason (10/5): Nice Hotel in a good area - Check in was easy, room was clean and fresh. Had great facilities. You step out on to the main road and into a good area, with plenty to do. There is a good bar just down the road, costa across the road. Even though it is close to a main road there was no noise evident. Breakfast was served and fresh, with friendly staff. Highly recommend it.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Was nice place!!
Have a good access to city center and the room was tidy and welcoming!
- Onder (2/5): So bad and very poor service and facilities - So poor facilities very surprised
- Verified traveler (8/5): When you just need the essentials - Needed a bed for the night, perfect for that and the complimentary breakfast was a bonus.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location on a budget - Central location, surprisingly not that noisy, polite staff. Just be aware of the numerous flights of narrow stairs - not for those with lots of luggage!
- Scott (6/5): For the price, you could not expect more. - Noise from neighbor ing property was so loud that could not sleep, lounge was cold. Uncomfortable soft bed.
Room temperature too cold.
Staff were always around, friendly and helpful.
Breakfast okay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good for backpackers - Very basic, but location makes up for it.
- Jordan (6/5): Weekend in London - Great location but very basic and lack of WiFi was at times problematic. All in all was good value for money considering where you are.
- Eddie (6/5): showers not so good but everything else was fine - the shower was the only thing that didn't work properly, perhaps I should have tried a shower on another floor
- Kacie (4/5): Dirty hotel, unfriendly staff and no lift - The only thing going for this hotel (if you can even call it that) is location. I had to lug a heavy suitcase up and down five sets of stairs. The beds weren’t made - you have to do it yourself. The toilet on our floor was so dirty, I didn’t even want to use it. Good job I didn’t need a shower as it was filthy too. Expedia doesn’t tell you that you have to pay a £10 fee for the key deposit either.
- Pete (2/5): My BAD experience here! - The only thing this hostel has going for it is the location, but still can NOT RECOMMEND!
Here are the issues I had:
- Difficult to find, poor signage and unfriendly check in - gave feedback to reception that there weren't even any signs so you're not sure if you're going in to a hotel, hostel or Indian restaurant. They said the Indian owners didn't want to add signs as they have an Indian restaurant on the second level.
- No lift. 5 levels of stairs if your room is at the top - that is a LOT of stairs with your luggage in a narrow, short stepped staircase.
- The mattress I had was saggy and needs to be replaced. I could feel the spring in my back.
- I was bitten by bed bugs!
- Poor security - the door locks are key operated and don't work properly. It can literally take 5 minutes to open by jiggling the key which is not normal. So some people just don't bother locking the door because it's too difficult to unlock! I gave feedback to reception and they said 'you just have to jiggle it and keep trying'. Very unhelpful.
- many toilets and showers were out of order. So I had one shower and one toiled for the whole level to use! That's just not enough. And the shower had a big puddle of disgusting water pooled between the shower and the door, so you have to step in it to get out of the shower when you're clean.
I'd like to see the staff and owners of this place stay here themselves and see how they feel about the experience everyone has to go through.
- Jorge (6/5): Picture didn't tell the story - Dirty curtains and bed - very different from the picture presented.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Low price, low quality - Other than the price, not good. The shower was broken, the WiFi didn't work, and everything else looked like it hadn't been altered in 30 years.
- Martin (8/5): central located low budget hotel / hostel - it was cheap and clean, located directly near theatre lion king was played. Next tube Temple or Embankment (for friday / saturday night lines). You should be good in walking small steps in stairs, rooms are 2nd to 4th floor, no elevator.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Basic room but great price for location - We had a double room on the fourth floor, which was just great for a short stay. The bed was very comfortable. The shared toilets and bath/shower rooms were clean, breakfast was fine for us (toast and cereals). Nice bar with good prices and Indian snacks there or Indian restaurant on the second floor. Would definitely stay again. Great to go to the theatre and be able to walk back to our hotel.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Mehhh - The daytime front desk staff was amazing! she was very informative and helpful with suggestions. The nighttime guy not so much. Also there are no towels or sheets available just a blanket and a pillow. You can rent towels and a hair dryer which is a little inconvenient to me. But if you're just sleeping there it's not a big deal, also keep in mind if you're a female you may be put in a room with a couple of other guys so you may have to be okay with that. The location is wonderful! There is a restaurant inside, and downstairs outside there's a couple of coffee shops and restaurants all within walking distance. Also within walking distance are a lot of the major tourist attractions and the tube.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Not very clean but okay to stay. It's mostly that the building is old. Staff were very nice
- Eve (8/5): - Staff were very friendly and helpful
- Verified traveler (4/5): Good for one night but not for any more - The hotel was above an Indian restaurant and you had to pay £10 for the key and if you were not out by 10 am the next day you had to pay £50. The room was clean but uncomfortable and if your a light sleeper you won't sleep. For one night it was perfect but not any longer.
- Susan (6/5): Great location, but not perfect conditions - Room was very hot and there was no air conditioning (bring a fan). Open the windows help only slightly, but doing so increased the noise level from surrounding rooms. Very noisy every time another guest opened or closed a door, the noise echoed in the room. The location of the hotel was great and the 24 hour available front desk was very helpful with suggestions and maps. For the price and location, we would probably stay at this hostel again despite the issues we encountered. There was only wi-fi in the common area. Not available in the room.
- Rob (10/5): Excellent location, good value. - Great Location for centre of London and all areas nearby because on variety of bus routes. Place had a good vibe, reception staff very friendly and helpful. Only criticiscm, shower had high step to get into - a handle or additional smaller step would make it much more safe.
- Andrea (4/5): Good stay - I've always traveled saying, I really just need a bed... but this place had made me rethink that. It is definitely one of the most different places it stayed. I didn't get one good night of sleep because of the noise. The smell of mold is enough to make you very sick. It makes me wonder what Orbitz' standards are to even allow such a place on their site. The people are very kind and trust me it's hard to right this review . The location you literally cannot beat, it is awesome! But I wouldn't be able to stay again. It's extremely dirty and very low standards. The hallways are dark and are operated by motion which takes a second to adjust.
- Ka Wing (4/5): not recommend - Kinda Bad, don't even have wifi access
