Guest Reviews
- Paul (6/5): - The property is in an ideal location, staff are great, food really good, beers good, nice big room and clean only ould be betterdownside was checking in could be better
- Paul (8/5): - Nce big rooms, clean, staff were great, location good and parking, only downside was the checking in but otherwise a great stay
- John G. (6/5): - Whilst the staff were friendly and very good and the linen was spotless, the room and bathroom were disappointing - for example - no cover on the toilet seat, signs of mould around top edge of bath, stains on the carpet, bathroom floor repair with gaffer tape, a picture hook left on the wall with no picture, a modern smart TV but which could only get main channels, Wifi that did not work - couldn’t get connected in spite of BT equipment right outside the room- not one comfortable seat in the room, cheap furniture and a mattress that one couldn’t move on without disturbing the other sleeper. Breakfast was good and other food served was conventional and ok. Overall we felt it was overpriced.
- Lorron (10/5): - We loved our short stay at the Captain Cook Inn! They took care of all five of us for one night, and knowing that we had to leave very early the following day, they prepared breakfast to-go for us for our journey back to Newcastle. Too kind and so thoughtful!
- Craig (10/5): - Pros - friendly welcome, quick check in, large room and great tea tray, fantastic breakfast
Cons - small gripe is the tv is at a funny angle to the bed and my old neck was aching
- Jill (10/5): -
- Dot (6/5): - The room and bathroom were good. The staff pleasant.
Unfortunately the double bed in room 5 was hard and very uncomfortable. To get any sleep, I put the duvet upon the mattress.
Also, there does not appear to be any staff on site over night. I was up early but downstairs, all the doors to dining room and others were locked. I went outside and found myself locked out.
I had left access number in room and had to wait for arrival of cook to be let into building.
£150 for room did not prepare myself for this experience.
- Cedric (10/5): - Every aspect of our stay was ideal ,the staff were all young and extremely courteous and helpful, the food was. excellent and of good value and our room was clean and tidy.
- Brian (8/5): - Lovey staff, pub bit noisy but then we did have an early night. Very good breakfast Room basic but fine
- Neil (10/5): - Ideally situated for my boat trips. Room good size clean and comfortable. Excellent breakfast. Good choice for evening meals. Staff friendly and helpful. I would stay there again for my whale trips.
Only minor thing which wasn't great was that on one morning I was out before breakfast and the hotel supplied a 'pack up'. This consisted of a packet of crisps, a biscuit and bottle of water.
- John Leslie (8/5): Clean, friendly and unpretentious. - Spacious, clean room with a good view. All services provided. Parking no problem. I get the impression that facilities have recently been upgraded. Huge food portions
- Ian (8/5): Good for business and tourists - Good food. Locals and tourists in bar. Quieter room to side
- Paul (10/5): Captain book! - Everything clean everyone friendly the breakfast was excellent.
- Sarah (8/5): - This is a cosy and convenient hotel with parking and a nice local atmosphere. It's easy to get to the town and there are great food options.
- Pat (10/5): - I am a regular at the Captain Cook Inn. It has an unique ambience which refects Staithes village itself. Bed extremely comfortable but the duvet was a higher tog than the heatwave needed.
- Michele (6/5): - The Staff are brilliant . Unfortunately the hotel is beyond 'looking tired' and it is such a shame
- Barbara (8/5): Panorama of Staithes - Fantastic location - warm welcome and great prawn sandwich. The room had wonderful views and bathroom amenities good. However the bed needs a new mattress!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Value for money, free parking and great breakfast - More like rooms above a pub restaurant than a ‘hotel’. Big room with tea-making facilities, complimentary bottles of water, single-use toiletries, hair dryer and floor fan. Great view from the window.
However, the light coloured carpet is a little stained, it’s not really suitable for non-domestic use. The room I was in would benefit from a bit of investment and TLC.
The rooms are on the first and second floors (there isn’t a lift) and all the doors have push button coded locks.
Friendly staff.
I felt safe in this hotel. It’s a great base for exploring the surrounding areas.
- Rhonda (6/5): - Nice view from window, large room, pub area was nice with good food. Lock to the door was difficult (no secondary lock), shower had poor water pressure, white carpet was quite dirty, but it was in a good location to access if you are hiking the Cleveland Way.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great location for a stay in Staithes - Excellent location with ample parking. Hotel is fairly basic but the room was large and clean, and the staff were great
- john (8/5): Nice place - Food was excellent. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The rooms were clean and tidy .they do need updating little bit overall very pleased
- Gigliola (10/5): - Excellent stay, super friendly and helpful staff, good breakfast, really good all round!
- James (10/5): - Staithes is a beautiful village, although we were certainly lucky with the weather. The Inn was a great place to stay, with a tucked away car park at the rear. Nice big room and good bathroom. Great breakfast including kippers as an option. It is short walk down into the village where there are other eating and drinking options too and lovely walks and views. Steep back up though!
- Julie (8/5): - Staithes was lovely and the captain cook in was good bed a little uncomfortable but a nice stay
- Charles (10/5): Outstanding - Fabulous stay.Friendly and very efficient Staff.Well kept real ale.Tasty home cooked food.I shall definitely be returning for another relaxing stay.
- Graham (8/5): - A bonus was the quality of the food, both breakfast and evening meals.
- Cael (8/5): Working away - Clean, nice location and friendly staff
- Dave (10/5): - The property is spot on, great place to stay. The owners and staff were very amenable. Top brekky. They have done so well with the place, of course there are very minor niggles but nobody minds.Would happily recommend to anyone.
- Joanne (8/5): - Lovely comfortable stay. Lovely views from window. Relaxing and peaceful
- Verified traveler (8/5): Lovely - Last minute booking, enjoyed our stay dinner was lovely and so was the breakfast. Stayed in a dog friendly room as needed with our dog. Few stains on carpet as to be expected but no unpleasant smells or anything so pleased with that. Room had basics tea and coffee with tiny biscuits which we used. Bed frame could do with tightening? It was wooden and rocked other wise good stay would deffo come again. Brill location for staiths and customer parking in back also.
- Glyn (10/5): Captain Cooke Hotel Staithes. - Very comfortable stay. Very efficient service. Excellent breakfast. Good selection of beers. Recommended.
- robert (10/5): - Great stay at a great place.
- Linda (10/5): - Perfect for our needs. Really friendly helpful staff. Easy parking. Clean with large, comfy bed. Will look forward to returning.
- Stephen (8/5): Staithes Short stay - Lovely stay at a traditional seaside hotel.food is served in the bar ,breakfast was excellent far too big ! Bed a bit hard room spacious and comfortable
- john (8/5): Great food and service - Only thing that was wrong it was very noisy until the early hours of the morning with music and bar service opening until 2am
- Penelope (8/5): Very comfortable stay - Very welcoming, large bright warm room with great views. Tea/coffee/bottled water plenty. Very good breakfast included. Good food served in the evening with real ale spot on! Lovely staff. Easy access, good parking on site. Great position for all cafes, restaurants, pubs and chippy.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Cheap and cheerful but clean and tidy. Mattress was awful so had a poor night's sleep. That and a door slamming at an ungodly hour because of automatic door closers. Service was fine.
- Neal (8/5): - Great location and staff.
I think it might be in need of a little update to the rooms, better shower, bigger bed possibly
- Lena (10/5): - Friendly, homely, laid back atmosphere, and Yorkshire hospitality. Will definitely visit again the food is amazing, and the views and walks along the coast are perfect for burning the calories off.
- Joan (10/5): - Very comfortable lovely staff.Food value for money.Definately worth the visit
- Mark (8/5): One night in Staithes - Positives:
Decent view from window
Big bedroom with table and chairs
Good shower, window in bathroom so no noisy extractor fan
Close to bus stop and village attractions
Drinks and meals available in same
building
Negatives:
Bed wasn’t the comfiest
Room at end of corridor on top floor so a bit of a walk going in and out
- sarah (8/5): Restful stay - Lovely place to stay and easy to wlask down into village . Great view of sea from room . Quiet . Lovely breakfast and food in place lovely and very large portions . Staff all friendly
- Darren (8/5): Staithes Delight. - Reasonably priced, clean, staff very polite, helpful and welcoming.
Bed was comfy and the room was clean and warm.
Breakfast was all fresh and the food was great.
Ideally placed with a short walk down to the harbour or up to the the nearest bus stop to travel further afield if so desired.
Would recommend to anyone visiting Staithes and looking to explore further afield.
- Jacqueline (10/5): - An ideal position to discover the village of Staithes, the hotel was comfortable and staff very helpful and friendly.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Nice but a bit expensive for the facilities. - The village is great and the people at the Inn were welcoming and pleasant but it is overpriced for what you get. It is quite basic. The room had a pullout bed with only 3 slats so we had to put the mattress on the floor. Other than a rickety wardrobe the double bed and the pull-out bed were the only furniture. It's nice that dogs can stay and it was quiet and secure even with the pub below. The breakfast was satisfying.
- Paul (10/5): An excellent overnight stay. - I arrived mid-morning, knowing that check-in was not until 4.00pm. Despite this, they allowed me to park my car in their car park so that I could go off on a hike along the coastal path. Later, when I checked in and was shown to a room, they let me switch to a room with a bath, which I need for medical reasons. This was much appreciated, as were the evening meal and breakfast which were excellent. Staff were very friendly and helpful. All in all, one of the best B&Bs I have ever stayed in.
- Michael (8/5): - Paid £110 per night definitely not worth this bed very uncomfortable
- Alan (8/5): - Friendly excellent breakfast, over large portions at dinner which was over facing.
- Audrey (6/5): Disappointing for the price - We were shown to our room it was warm, we then went out to a restaurant for dinner. Bar at Captain Cool was friendly and lively.
We went to bed, the bed had seen better days the mattress did not fit and there was a hard plank across the middle of bedframe. The bedroom door rattled in its frame all night. I had broken sleep all night. When I went to shower in morning I found a mouldy shower head, see picture. The bathroom on closer inspection was not the cleanest I have seen black mouldy gunge around shower. Breakfast was okay. There was no one available when checking out to advise the above.
I have stayed in far cheaper places that were much much better.
- Ian (10/5): - Nice quiet break good base for walks and drives
- Lorraine (8/5): - Comfortable, clean & quiet
- Sean (8/5): - I did not like some guests talking loud at 1 am not respecting other guests rights to have sleep. There was no one to report this to. There needs to be a rule stated in all rooms no loud noise after 11pm.
- Toni (10/5): - Excellent staff, lovely food, great views from room. Only downside a little more attention to detail in room cleaning. Behind the door in bathroom was dirty and would have liked a heads up about how to work the shower BUT would definitely stay again and recommend to others
- Gerald (6/5): - We enjoyed the stay in the village of staithes ,but the hotel was a little tired and in need of an update,as it was a pub understandable a little noisy at night .
- Tracey (2/5): - Do not stay at this property
The staff are rude and not helpful
The rooms are terrible dirty and in disrepair
Stains on carpet and bathroom unclean
The only thing good was the breakfast
Very noisy to early hours
- gail (8/5): - Lovely place would visit again.
- michele (10/5): - Food excellent and incredibly patient staff who go above and beyond
- Edward (8/5): - Amazing local scenery. Picturesque
- Andrew (10/5): Bike packing adventure Ilkley to Staithes - Great place, very down to earth and chilled out, staff super friendly! Amanda the chef made awesome breakfast for an early bird like me, who was dashing about on my mountain bike. All the staff super friendly and inviting. Pints for £3.60 = yes please!
- Paul (10/5): - An excellent place to stay great food ,and short walk to harbour, verry relaxing place Staiths
- Stephen (10/5): - Great, super hosts
- Gregory (4/5): - Friendly people and good breakfast but atrocious beds and shabby room. Certainly not worth the money. Two star hotel and price should reflect that.
- John (8/5): - A comfortable, large, clean room with a good view. Friendly and welcoming staff. Overall, a good place to stay in Staithes.
- Martin (10/5): Staithes to the rhythm - we really didn't expect so much from this one-night stay in steeply picturesque Staithes but from the moment we checked-in (early but the room was ready) we immediately felt like a house-guest rather than a paying customer. It was, I suppose a typically friendly, hard-working Yorkshire welcome as the lady of the house showed us to our room whist her partner fixed locks in the Ladies! Our spacious room was spotlessly clean and the bed comfortable, most importantly, there were biscuits! We dined-in that evening, with the local delicacy of cheese-smothered chicken known as Parmo defeating my appetite, through quality as much as prodigious quantity. If that was good, the breakfast, particularly the local sausages, was a real treat. All-in-all, we loved our stay and would go again to further explore the beautiful North-East coast.
- Dawn (10/5): - The staff are so friendly. The food was gorgeous and a big breakfast in the morning. They made Lucy our dog welcome and the bed was really comfy too. We had a lovely stay there
- Roxanne (10/5): - Lovely food, great atmosphere. Staff all kind and helpful. A great stay!
- Lynda (6/5): - Very nice room, friendly staff, and good price; but not suitable for business travel.
Breakfast is normally only served between 8.30 and 9.30 am. Chef couldn't come in before 7.30, the sandwich option offered was dry and unpleasant and the property wouldn't reduce the bill to offset the cost of the unavailable breakfast which had been paid for in advance.
Nice for a holiday, but not for an inflexible work schedule.
- David (8/5): - Lovely pub to stay at in a great location.
- KEVIN (10/5): - Fab place the stay to be in Staithes and surrounding area. Great traditional pub with excellent staff, food and drink. We will be back.
- Debbie (4/5): - Booked at captain cook inn staithes
Disappointed to find the building was locked on arrival called the telephone number no answer asked them to call me no o e did
I booked on Expedia two rooms
The money was taken from my account
When checking in finally at 4 o’clock I was asked to pay . I said I had already paid
When checking my bank account one of the payments had come back into my account but one hadn’t so I said I would pay when the money had come back as I don’t want to pay twice
We went out for a meal and decided to go back to the hotel for a drink at 9 o’clock the pub was shut
I tried to get in through the guest door but was struggling
It was opened from the inside by a not so friendly staff member the only one there
I asked if the bar was shut she said yes (at 9 o’clock )
I said can we get a drink
She said yes if you take it to your room
We were with other people
I said this is ridiculous why can’t we have a drink in the bar to which she replied if I loose the attitude she will open the bar
Needless to say I was not pleased with this
I will not be coming back here
I have a resavation to come back in July
I will be cancelling
- Gregory (10/5): - In a great location room was great and the food really enjoyed it there will definitely go back again thanks to all the staff
- John (10/5): - Spacious room, lovely food, staff excellent and great beer.
- John (6/5): - Typical oldish property. Large Rooms - high ceilings - rather dated furnishings but perfectly clean and functional.
Stayed one night and had problems with the WiFi not working which was annoying.
Lovely location close to Staithes Harbour area.
The pub is popular with tourists and locals and plenty of people having food. The breakfast was very good.
Only disappointment was that I left my Tablet Charger behind in my room, and despite my phoning the day I left, and being promised it would be sent on to me in the post (which I promised to re-imburse), it never arrived with me! I emailed twice to chase it up but never got a reply to either Email bar the standard acknowledgement of email receipt.
- Lauren (8/5): Lovely - Nice overnight stay with my partner. Room spacious and clean and the bed was comfortable. A little soft for my liking but I did sleep well. Was very thankful for the fan and I’m used to sleeping with one at home.
Delicious food…the steak and ale pie was amazing!
Thoroughly enjoyed the cooked breakfast before the long drive home.
Would definitely recommend the Captain cook Inn and we would be more than happy to stay again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely stay as always. Room is a good size, clean, comfortable and plenty of tea, coffee etc. Breakfast was good and enjoyed the local kippers. Food in the evening was lovely and chips best we've tasted and a good atmosphere in the bar in the evening.
Handy for so many beautiful places in the area both coastal and inland and of course the gorgeous Staithes where the accommodation is situated which has amazing walks.
- Scott (8/5): Better than pictures are - Great stay. Pictures need updating on the website as the rooms are a lot nicer than they seem. Good service. Nice food!
- Lorna (6/5): - Food excellent
Stayed in a family room - day bed for my daughter was metal and extremely noisy, the double bed me and hubby shared was very hard and caused back issues for myself the following morning! No toilet seat but good selection of warm drinks on self service in room
Room was clean but a few cobwebs on ceilings but beds were clean with plenty of clean towels
- Mark (8/5): Nice enough stay here - Only ourselves to blame but the listing says Staithes, Saltburn by the Sea. We thought that we were staying at Saltburn by the Sea but it's about 9 miles away. It didn't matter much in the end as Staithes is a lovely place.
It's a room above a pub. All nice enough, nothing special, perhaps a little old and dated in places but for £75 you get a double warm and clean room in a great locationwith an excellent breakfast so can't complain at all. Free tea and coffe in the bedrooom and basic toiletries provided.
Perhaps the bit was a little too soft but thats just my personal opinion.
A few nice pubs and some good walks in the local area. The pub and hotel is dog friendly.
- Philip (4/5): - Easy parking reasonably clean room could do with a update the food was just ok probably wouldn’t book that room again (9) the lady serving behind the bar was very nice and polite
- Darren (4/5): - The breakfast was the best thing about it the chef said hello when she arrived for work snd the lady who serviced this was nice the breakfast was the best we have ever had
The room was to hot and everything else is shappy the bar staff on a night did not talk and could not Evan remember your drink evan though there was only 5 people in the bar local people just look at you when you go in its not very friendly at all
When you go to your room there is no door between the bar and your room so all the noise goes upstairs we wondered it the bar staff are concerned for there jobs as its up for sale is this why they seem miserable
Wouldn't go again its a shame as the breakfast chef does a great job
- Philip (6/5): - The room was nice and clean with a nice view we ordered food at the bar which wasn’t that good we had also booked a breakfast which again was just ok (might be out of season blues )
- Andrew (10/5): Lovely friendly hotel - The staff were absolutely fantastic and friendly, the room was clean, comfortable and nice and warm with a good selection of teas and coffee’s. The breakfast was cooked fantastic . Brilliant selection of evening meals
The hotel is dog friendly
Definitely worth a visit
- Andrew (10/5): Great hotel - Really friendly staff, excellent food and drinks, brilliant location, competitive prices, highly recommend , dog friendly
- Andrew (10/5): The captain cook - Love stopping at the captain cook, it’s my 30th time , the staff are friendly, the food and drinks are fantastic, nice comfortable rooms , I highly recommend it
- Paul (10/5): - Stayed numerous times always a joy
- Kirsten (6/5): - The hotel rooms are above a pub. The rooms are basic but very functional. Woken by drunken guests returning to their rooms at midnight. Good views in morning. Great breakfast.
- Mark (8/5): - Very convenient for visiting Staithes
- Richard (10/5): 1 night stay - Great place, good size rooms that are very clean.
Lovely bar area with fab food, and great breakfast & parking!
- Jo (8/5): Winter getaway - Nice winter stay. When we arrived we had a couple of issues with our room but this was quickly fixed with a room swop . Great views and friendly staff.
- Peter (2/5): - This is probably the worst hotel I have stayed in but the b'fast was good and I can't blame the staff. But the owners have made zero investment and do not maintain the place. The taps leaked, the shower should be renamed a dribble and the rad was uncontrollable so we tried to sleep in a sauna. The carpet was filthy and the bathroom floor was broken so difficult to clean. There was no toilet lid! And this is the second "better" room we were given because the first was worse than terrible. There was no mirror for example. In both rooms there was no basic equipment like a hairdryer and no pictures on the wall or anything so no effort to provide any ambiance. Avoid at all costs unless they demonstrate improvement.
- Helen (10/5): - Warm friendly greeting cosy environment excellent breakfast cooked fresh to order
- Verified traveler (6/5): - I’ll start with the positives: The location of this place is absolutely perfect! Placed just up the hill from Staithes harbour and there’s a bus stop close by that can bring you in to Whitby. So location gets a 10/10. The food was also really great. Both the pub food and the breakfast. Always quick a good service.
However, on the second and third morning they started cleaning the rest of the pub area whilst the breakfast was happening in the dining area (just adjacent to the pub area) so there was a strong smell of bleach which didn’t complement the breakfast too well and the noise from the hoover.
There was no water pressure in my shower but I was almost attacked by the water from the tap as I washed my hands, it was very powerful from the tap so I tried to manoeuvre the tap to not to get soaked after the first time.
There were spiderweb a bit all over the room and there were dark hair left on the sheets (I don’t have dark hair).
There was a lot of wear and tear on the room and a whole in the floor on the bathroom so be careful not to get your socks stuck.
So would I stay again, yes I would.
- vic (8/5): - 3 night stay to visit family who live in Staithes, nice corner room with a great view, breakfast food excellent staff very good, not 5 star but good.
- Corinne (10/5): Relaxing - The room was clean, confortable, & the bed lovely. The hotel is at the top of the hill, so handy for the bus, if like me you don't drive.
The staff is friendly & helpful. The breakfeast is really nice with a good choice. I also had my evening meal there, & I really enjoy them. So all & all I can recommande them. Not to menrion Staithes is a lovely little village.
- alan (10/5): - Had a great stay at this hotel. Spotlessly clean, and the staff were great. Highly recommended
- Lynsey (10/5): Good value for money - I paid £55 for a single occupancy room on a Thursday night. I was given room 9 on the top floor. It was a good size and had great views. Bed was comfortable. Service was friendly. Breakfast was included. Small selection but tasty. Overall very happy for what i paid
- John (8/5): Nice break. - Our room was basic, but clean and warm with comfortable bed and a large bathroom.
Attention needed where the bathroom tiles met the carpet as there was no cover over the edge of the tile and could cause a stubbed tie or worse. The breakfast was amazing, large and well cooked. We also had Sunday lunch there which was again large and beautifully cooked. The staff were friendly especially the young lady who served breakfast. Nice stay for the price, but the walk down into town is not for the faint hearted.
- Paul (6/5): - Great location for quick stopover and explore Staithes
- Louise (6/5): Error of hotel with booking - I was very disappointed after staying here many times with my two dogs After booking with hotels .com which I have no dispute with I phoned the hotel direct to ask for a front room with view and specifically told them I was bringing my two little dogs and my old dog cannot walk up many steps
When I arrived at the hotel to check in they said I could not have the room a suite with four beds that I paid for They said somebody had forgotten to write my clear instructions down
I was put in a room with no front view that I clearly asked for also we were also put on the top floor with many steps for my disabled dog to climb up so ended carrying him up all those stairs
I have always rated this hotel but now put off to staying again there
We also had to sit on a breakfast table that was not set up on both nights
- Danielle (2/5): - The propert location is beautiful, thay is the only good point. Cream carpet stained, paint peeling off the wall, curtains hanging off. Then to top it off at 6.45pm the most excessive booming began under our room from downstairs. The bass so loud it was making the bed vibrate, the bedside table lamps physically move. I went down to complain to be told what did i expect it was a pub and it would end at 11pm!! No doubt i packed up and left. I have staued above numerous pubs and mever had this issue!! I have emailed to booking site and the captain cook itself!! Absolutely appalled
