Guest Reviews
- Carl (8/5): - We arrived late due to traffic and they kindly went out of their way to accommodate us !! Great food and service !!
- david (6/5): - we are certainly not ones to moan or complain but we stayed in 3 properties on our trip to cornwall, unfortunatly the black swan was not how it looked on the photo, very run down room, very basic for the money,No breakfast,no one there in the morning other than the cleaner.will not be going back, not worth the money at all
- Elizabeth (6/5): - when we booked in may bed and breakfast when we arrived we were not expected the hotel changed hands in july and do not do b & b they only do bed but they supplied
brackfast bag
- Merilyn (8/5): - An old pub with stairs, no lift of course, but very good
- James (6/5): - Lilly was brilliant. Place was clean. Original room not ready for us 2 1/2 hours after check in time. The room we were given, toilet seat didn’t fit toilet & it was loose. Had to ask for additional tea bags and room bin to be emptied.
I’d suggest if your not going to service the room that’s fine, but at least put enough tea bags and milk to have a cuppa every morning your there and a bin big enough for the stay.
Had one meal there mine was ok and my wife’s was sent back - personally I’d give eating there a miss.
- Eugene (10/5): - Staff members are friendly, room is clean
- Simon (4/5): - The owners had just taken over. Breakfast was not available although we got a continental left outside the rooms for 2 of the 4 nights. Some of the lights were not working and televisions were installed after we arrived.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Reasonable for the price - Staff were lovely, but I think we were a surprise and the pub had recently been taken over. Sadly no breakfast but the staff went out and bought us something to eat in our room
- Crestan (10/5): - Very friendly pub food was excellent all other people comments saying food was bad new chef excellent rooms were extremely clean staff were friendly I'd advise anyone to go and stay here or try their food I will definitely be going back
- Jane (2/5): - The electrics (lighting) didn't work in the shower room so they moved me to a room that hadn't been cleaned, everything was used and not cleaned including carpet, shower, no towels, so I took the ones from the first room. Staff were dismissive about it all. The only thing done was changing the pillows. Then they left to attend to a party downstairs. I felt as if I was an inconvenience to them, including the handyman who couldn't fix the lights. I was the only guest there for the night. The next morning I went downstairs to leave asap, there was no one there to see me off too.
- Bob (10/5): - Lovely spot with the gweek creek 2 min walk lovely views fantastic bed and good shower plenty of water pressure can be a bit noisy early on but super quite bedtime will stop again
- Sharon (10/5): - Room was really comfortable, staff were lovely
- Jane (8/5): - Very nice bed for 1 night, but the room wasn't absolutely clean especially the toilet. There was a used towel on the towel rack and clean towels on the bed when I arrived. I had to ask for milk and for staff to turn the heating on from downstairs. Pizza was good and staff were friendly.
- Hayley (6/5): - Sadly not the same as when previous owners were there. When we arrived they didn't know we were coming, even though I'd booked weeks beforehand, so we had to wait for the room to be prepared. UHT milk in the room were 4 months out of date. They advertise the bar as being open til 11.30 but they kicked us out at 9.30 because it was quiet, even though we were still having drinks. There was also nobody there to check us out, we were told just to leave the key in the door.
I say this with kindness because they seem like nice people, but the hospitality just isn't there. It's clear that they prioritise the locals, but for £125 a night for a room, there should be a bit more service.
On the bright side, the room was clean , the bed was comfy, and the breakfast and pizzas were delicious!
- Deborah (6/5): Ok - Lovely people working there but it needs a really good clean.
Bed comfortable & food in the bar nice.
Might have caught them on an off day as the lady wasn’t well.
- Riccardo (10/5): Very nice stay - We had a very nice stay in Gweek! The room was spacious and clean. Good food and good music at the pub!
- Alun (8/5): - Great place to stay the night before our Seal Sanctuary Experience around the corner in Gweek. Lovely clean and bright bedroom. Delicious evening meal in the pub. Also very tasty breakfast in the morning, very friendly lady served us and was very flexible about the time we needed to have our breakfast.
- Paul (4/5): - Uncomfortable bed with huge dip, no tea spoon with the tea making stuff, TV with no aerial? Nice pub but the rooms are tiered and need a little work.
- Peter Charl (10/5): - It was my first time there and it was enjoyable the people and my food was very good 👍
- Zoe (6/5): So much potential but... - A mixed review: Generous room, exceptionally comfortable bed, spacious shower.
Friendly courteous staff, good food & drink.
We chose The Black Swan as it was one of the few places which included breakfast in the price we paid. Alas we were let down on both mornings! The first morning was negated by a free main meal the following evening. The second, however, was a complete no show despite having arranged personally the specific time with the landlady the previous evening! We waited 45mins only for the place to stay in darkness. I have yet to receive any communication regarding this matter which is hugely disappointing.
The fire door leading out from the accommodation was locked which is a significant worry as both windows in the room would not open.
- david (10/5): - Nice village pub in rural picturesque spot. Very good beer, nice atmosphere. Room clean and tidy. Lovely staff. Menu of pub classics very nice fish and chips. Breakfast very good. Quirky village shop opposite had great range of local, gf, deli. A very friendly pub
.
- Steven (10/5): Wow this little place. Little gem - Lovely place. Lovely room with a massive shower. Plus the location is to die for. For the money I could not have expected it to be this fab.
- WINFRID (8/5): - Simple clean comfortable room upstairs. Brief efficient check-in. Nice cooked English breakfast.
- Sheldon (10/5): - Nice comfortable room.
Great greeting in arrival
Evening meal was fantastic, highly recommend the burger and breakfast was great
- GG (8/5): Village pub. - Customer should be warned about the steep steps down to get from the car park to the pub or advised to unload at pub then park up.
- Roger (4/5): - Apart from the bed being comfortable and the room and bathroom being clean. The remainder of the pub is pretty shabby. Meals were very poor too.
- Steve (2/5): - Just awful - no concept of service in fact contemptuous gardens full of litter and broken glass overflowing ashtrays in garden tables and clearly been there for days. At £50 per night probably would not have complained but at £110 I it is disgraceful
- Steve (6/5): - Limited menu. And wine list. Great location
- Andreas (10/5): - Gweek is beautiful
- Clive (8/5): - Owner only taken over pub 2 days before my visit and kitchen had been declared as unfit so no evening meal staff very friendly and room clean so no complaints but difficult to give a real assessment due to problems
- Lucy (10/5): Would stay again - We were looking for a quaint country getaway. This place fits the bill perfectly. Whether you want a base location or a quiet retreat this place is excellent.
- James (8/5): A real pub feel - This is a real pub - simple but gets the job done . Nothing fancy and Qweek is a hole in the wall village. Not super convient but as close to the Lizard as you can get and other popular locations nearby. A classic rural driving experience getting there .Priced right . The room was simple but clean . Enjoy a pub experience
- kevin (8/5): Business Stay - Excellent stay in a lovely pub
- Rod (8/5): - Very friendly pub with nice rooms. In a lovely position next to the tidal Helford.
- Jennifer (10/5): - Lovely welcome, nice room with good facilities. Food was excellent, served very quickly and obviously freshly cooked. Host was very friendly and runs a good pub/hotel.
- Ian (8/5): - Used as a base for a three day break to look around the area with a view to coming back later in the year.
- Christopher (10/5): A hidden gem! - A clean and friendly place to stay. Great food, delicious breakfast, lovely ales. The room was very comfortable. Would love to return some day...
- H (8/5): Cosy bnb - Very friendly welcome. Even had a Vegan choice on the evening menu which we enjoyed. A comfy cottage best describes it. We stayed 3 nights bnb and would definitely go back again
- David (8/5): - Helpful if the room had a better wifi signal. Breakfast was a little slow- esp as there was only 3 to be served.
- Sarah (8/5): - Thé location was lovely, the pub itself was perfect, the food was incredibly tasty and so was the breakfast.
- Conrad (10/5): Fabulous Guest House - Fabulous place to stay. More of a guest house than a B&B. The rooms are very comfortable and excellent bathroom facilities. Michael and his team do a great job.
- MARTIN (8/5): Weekend away - Good location for a weekend in Cornwall
- Diane (8/5): - Lovely bedroom and on suite, clean, newly decorated, comfortable bed. The Pub downstairs was on busy corner of the village and needed a lot of tlc. Wedding reception took over the whole pub for one day and told it was closed and expect a lot of noise in the evening. Next morning had to wait for owners to wake up to serve our breakfast. Must have been a good do. Overall great value for money in a pub. Would stay again but hope no wedding reception had been booked next time.
- Lynda (10/5): Black swan - Our few days at the black swan was lovely.the water for the shower was lovely and hot .our breakfasts were good we ate a couple of times in the evening, a short walk from seal sanctuary well worth a visit.
- Sarah (10/5): - Lovely comfortable modern room, beautifully presented.
- Susanna (8/5): - Nice and very kind owner
Good food
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Bit disappointed as classed as a four star establishment which it isn't. The room we stayed in needed a bit of TLC . Not too sure but I think like most hospitality at present there was a lack of staff. One person was doing everything. We had no hot water in the morning which was rectified when we managed to speak to someone at breakfast but too late for us. Breakfast itself was fine.
- Christopher (10/5): Lovely 2 night break - Very enjoyable stay at the Black Swan Inn at Gweek. Nice clean room and a good size shower cubicle. Very clean throughout. Good choice of food and drink. Excellent and friendly staff.
- Frances (10/5): - A delightful stay. Everyone was personable, friendly and efficient. Would happily return.
- Mary (8/5): - It was fine, very reasonably priced. Owner showed me to my room and I didn’t see him again as was out at the Minack theatre in the evening and he’d said when I leave just put keys through the door. Fridge in room and an assortment of food for my breakfast so all was good
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great place to stay, eat & drink !
- Robert (6/5): Black Swansong - Comfortable bedroom but food was ordinary
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice stay. - Good breakfast, nice staff. Very good bed. Clean room.
The day we arrived, the shower was cold. When we told them, they turned the boiler on. The day after it was fine.
We got back at 23.20 ish, and foudn the door was locked. But they heard us and opened the door for us. Otherwise all was well.
- steve (10/5): Quiet Chill - Another lovely visit for a chill out few days
- Christopher (10/5): Nice overnight stay. - Very nice and value for money.
- Kevin (10/5): - It was a lovely place to stay made some great friends and everyone was friendly and the food was amazing
- rob (10/5): Perfect - Nice sized room which was spotless and clean and very nicely furnished. Plenty of parking. The pub was cozy and in very good order. The staff and locals were friendly. Nothing seemed too much trouble and I would certainly visit again.
- Gail (10/5): - The room was great value, the staff were all really friendly. The breakfast was really tasty as was the one evening meal I took. The only issue I had was that the kitchen is closed on a Monday and Tuesday and this was not made clear on the hotels.com website. However the landlord suggested a local alternative where I enjoyed a meal. There is a village shop opposite the hotel which was very handy and the village of Gweek is a very pretty setting.
- David (8/5): - Overall a great time
- steve (10/5): Great break - Lovely location
Staff are absolutely brilliant
Looking forward to staying again already
- Andrew (8/5): - The staff and the pub locals were really friendly. Lovely breakfast.
- Kirianne (10/5): Home from home - Everyone was lovely, home from home, great atmosphere!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Clean and friendly good food
- Nichole (10/5): - Lovely pub and food and lovely people.
- Donna (10/5): Excellent stay - Staff were all very welcoming and could not do enough for us. Will definitely be back. Thanks to Mike, Warren for his fabulous food, Millie and Lilly.
- Paul (8/5): - Great food and friendly staff. Comfortable stay.
- S (10/5): - Fantastic cooked breakfast. Lovely evening meal. Very comfortable stay.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Perfect place to stay if wanting to roam the outdoors. Close to a lot of big attractions ie kynance cove, lands end ect. Food was great, fresh as it comes. Sometimes a little noisy on a night which is expected from a pub. Overall good stay
- Christine (6/5): Restaurant closed! - The venue was quite challenging to find - village setting.
I was informed on arrival (miles from anywhere) that there would not be food in the evening (I got there at about 7pm). There would be no evening food for both nights of my stay. The hotel was too far (and the journey too complicated to go to the nearest town and back. If I had been told before getting there I would have changed my arrangements regarding food.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - This is our third short stay at this property & it was again clean, comfortable & the staff were friendly & attentive.
However, we did report that the other 4 guests who were staying in the pub with us, were extremely noisy, up to 3am sat outside our bedroom window. They also spent both nights slamming doors & going in & out of the pub. Apparently they were foreign & obviously had no consideration or respect, for other guests who were trying to sleep. We had wanted to report their rowdy behaviour to the management of the pub, but didn't know if anyone was onsite or contactable. It did spoil our stay in Gweek.
- Rebecca (8/5): Long weekend away - Really comfortable stay. Room was clean, area was ideal for our stay.
- Carl (8/5): - A very nice pub run by friendly and helpful staff. Good honest food served in a comfortable dining area. The bar section had a great atmosphere with the locals r
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Substandard accommodation with poor facilities.
Not worth the £100 a night.
Poorly explained on Expedia i.e. steps, stairs and quality.
- Susan (10/5): Great pub with rooms. - Stayed here for a couple of nights whilst exploring The Lizard. Really good pub and comfy room. Hardworking friendly staff. We had our evening meals in the bar area and very happy with quality.
Gweek is a lovely village.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great host, very friendly people and clean room. Location wise not many restaurants around but also drive away from tourist spots so bear that in mind. Very quite small village so ok for a quick stop for 1 night. Price is reasonable.
- Susan (10/5): July stay - Lovely breakfast, lovely staff, lovely room - everything lovely!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Check in was from 2pm but the pub didn’t open til 3 just lucky the guy turned up, however he wasn’t very friendly!
Breakfast was excellent
- June (10/5): Lovely place to stay - Great food, drinks and service by Milly.
She was a great member of staff.
- michael (10/5): We will return. - Very nice hotel, the staff were particularly helpful and pleasant, We had an excellent evening meal with our friends.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A really friendly welcome and the standard of the accommodation was excellent
- stephen (10/5): Great local pub rooms and food - Greeted at the bar very friendly staff shown to my very clean simply furnished room. Had fish and chips in the restaurant which was excellent with local beer. Quiet setting ideal for a night stay working in Helston
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Restaurant good.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Potentially a gem but needs more TLC esp cleaning - On the whole staff very helpful, esp providing top up supplies of tea etc as we opted for no room service during our stay. We had 2 issues with our room, both a result of poor cleaning prior to our check in. We pointed one out immediately but it was not resolved. The second we only disovered as we were preparing to leave. This was much more serious and had I seen it on arrival I would have rejected the room. It was immediately shown to staff on duty who promised to report it to the owners and speak to the cleaner. Hopefilly neither will happen again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely room. Very clean. Good location
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We arrived on a Saturday and had a lovely evening meal, Sunday went out for the day and were too late for a meal as they stop serving at 4, that was the only downside to our stay.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Very average - The room was pleasant, clean. Need better mattress, it rolls you together! No hot water on our first night - cold shower! I know Covid means that the rooms are not serviced, but we weren't asked once if we needed anything, no signs anywhere, so ended up foraging for toilet roll! The parking is easy although access difficult for those not too mobile or carrying luggage. Very hard to contact the hotel before the event as phone line down and email not working/answered. Breakfast was good, though toast bit burnt. No wifi code in rooms. Generally a very 'average' experience, but we expected a bit better due to the hotel's previous good reviews. I think there's plenty of room for improvement, but they've only just reopened after Covid, so let's hope they get 'back in the swing' a bit more soon.
- Graham (10/5): Graham & Donna - Great food, excellent staff & comfy bed
- Jamie (10/5): Great place to stay - Food was fabulous, the steak pie was out of this world!. Staff superb, attentive and efficient rooms were clean and comfortable. Definitely stay here again
- Angela (6/5): - The Black Swan remote location, the room is very basic, no bathroom shelf, and no tea and coffee making facilities, maybe due to the circumstances of COVID 19, the double bed was very comfortable, the breakfast was adequate and food in general was just ok.
- Anneobrien (10/5): - Ray and Anne o Brien we spent 2 nights in this beautiful place! We wish we had booked for longer!Amazing bed!!!!Food amazing, staff amazing shout out to the two girls Libby and Pippa hope i have names right?!
- Angela (10/5): - Excellent
- Angelika&Kamil (8/5): - Very nice place to stay while visiting Cornwall! Very comfy room and excellent food. Nice, friendly staff. Great location as not too far to most popular places like Lands End, Porthcurno, St Ives. I would definitely recommend it.
- George (10/5): Nice B&B in Cornwall - The check-in was easy, staff were willing to help and offered tips for places to visit in the area. Great little garden at the back of the pub where food and drinks can be served. The spacious car park is also at the back of the pub. Breakfast was included at a good rate and well cooked. The rooms were small but ok for short stays, the bed mattress could be better - too soft for our like.
- Dominic (10/5): he Black Swan - Comfortable stay, lovely hotel, great food and lovely views from the room. Would definitely recommend to others, this was a fab find!
- Patricia (8/5): - Good value for money. Room has recently been refurbished. This is a general comment about hotels not just for the Black Swan, where there's reasonable space why is there only 1chair in a room for 2 adults?
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Unpretentious owners and staff. Nobody in your face, just natural friendliness and very helpful.
Good food and good beer.
Very central for the touristy bits.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great atmosphere, lovely food! Location is lovely too, lots to do in the surrounding areas. Would definitely stay again. Brilliant value for money!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We only had two nights stay and were looked after very well with comfortable clean rooms and very good food and staff very helpful. Nothing to dislike ;-)
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Comfortable and very clean room, the breakfast is amazing and the staff are really friendly people. The food in the restaurant area is top quality, a good selection of food and decent price. We will definitely be going back to the Black Swan, love it!
