Tingalayas Retreat does not have a characteristic beach setting - it is along the cliffs. They have an ocean-fed pool, access into the ocean (weather permitting), and a private sand area that mimics the feel and look of a beach.
A hot breakfast is included with your daily/nightly rate. Property offers optional snacks - smoothies at $4 USD per glass; fruit plate at $12 USD each.Guests are required to show a photo ID and credit card upon check-in. - Davi (9/5): Amazing stay. - Our stay in Negril was truly amazing, and we wholeheartedly recommend Tingalaya’s Retreat as a wonderful place to stay. David, Cecile, and the entire staff were incredibly kind, patient, and polite in every interaction, always doing their best to help in any way they could. I enjoyed the delicious Jamaican breakfast every morning, it was so filling that I almost didn’t need lunch. The natural pool was also fantastic, and we wished we had stayed longer just to relax and listen to the sound of the sea. The internet was not working very well in some parts of the property and on one night our shower wasn’t working. Hurricane Melissa had occurred recently, so these issues were likely related to that. In any case, both situations were handled quickly and efficiently by the staff.

Property not in walking distance from town but with the beautiful nature around, you want to just stay put and enjoy the serenity.

- Satyajit (1/5): disappointing experience for the price - We stayed in the King Suite for four days. The room had one king bed, one twin bed, and one queen bed. There was also a bed in the screened-in patio. The suite had one large bathroom. Positives: The staff at the resort were kind, thoughtful, friendly, and helpful. They provided great suggestions for things to do and places to eat. My daughter loved playing with the litter of puppies—they were absolutely adorable! The décor of the place was charming and warm. Negatives: The bugs in our room were out of control, both day and night, even when we used three mosquito coils at once. While the patio was screened, there were gaps under the doors leading into the room, and the doors to the screened patio were not airtight. Additionally, there was a 6-by-1-foot opening above the door with no screen or glass. The mosquito net on the bed was ripped and full of holes, allowing bugs to enter our sleeping area. I found large red ants crawling on me at night and cockroaches in the bed. There were also cockroaches in the bathroom. My entire family had difficulty sleeping due to mosquitoes buzzing in our ears, and we left with numerous mosquito bites. Because of the open space above the door, the air conditioning was ineffective—the cool air simply escaped. Even with two ceiling fans, two floor fans, and the AC running, the room remained uncomfortably warm. The pool on the property was unusable. It’s supposed to fill with ocean water during high tide, but it was practically empty the entire time. The breakfast was quite basic, consisting of coffee, tea, eggs, bacon, smoked fish, collard greens, fruit, and bread. We had the same menu every morning for four days. Our room was only cleaned once during our four-day stay. The shower area lacked a curtain, so no one else could enter the bathroom while someone was showering. The bathroom itself was separated from the bedroom by just a curtain. While the property felt safe, the security guard was stationed across the street at night. We had to open and close the gate ourselves nearly every time we parked the car. At the end of the day, for the price we paid for this room, we could have stayed at a more luxurious resort without all these issues. Lesson learned…

When researching travel we look for locations and properties that allow us to immerse ourselves in a local culture. Boy, did this beautiful place provide! The charming guest cottages, tucked in lush gardens, had everything we needed -- beds and linens very comfortable, wifi excellent, lots of places to relax and read. Gorgeous Jamaican breakfasts and a pre-arranged dinner were served in a towering wood shingled gazebo. All staff very friendly, greeting us by name and offering tips on local eateries and things to do. This is one of those rare, lovely places that permit one to daydream of living in a different time and place.

We loved our little, simple room hut close to the cliffs and the small swimming pool (with a queen bed and a nice bathroom with warm water). A good breakfast is served in the ‘living room’ on the other side of the road. We also experienced a lovely yoga session. Eleanore is a more than an amazing host. We loved our little, simple room hut close to the cliffs and the small swimming pool (with a queen bed and a nice bathroom with warm water). A good breakfast is served in the ‘living room’ on the other side of the road where also other rooms are. The properly is beautiful, the staff are pleasant and attentive and the private beach is like something I have never seen before. Having a car is almost required (mind the potholes) but once there, the place really is a retreat!
- Corita (7/5): Bohemian style retreat in Negril - Staff are lovely and very helpful, especially Sophie. Loved the landscaping clean beds, majestic ocean views over the pool. The owner can't help it, but the dogs in the neighboring side kill the peaceful vibes with their howling. Also, need to have remote operated gate - getting in and out of car each time to open and close gate became tedious.

It's a quiet retreat with beautiful garden views on one side of the property and magnificent ocean views on the opposite side of the property. It's so tranquil and peaceful on whichever side you decide to stay. It's close to seven mile beach and other attractions. The staff there are exceptionally helpful. They go out of their way to assist you in every way. The cottages are beautiful and clean. If you appreciate old world antiques and minimalist style, you will love your stay here. Breakfast is included-authentic Jamaican breakfast at its best. Looking forward to staying there again.

Beside the natural beauty and peaceful surrounding of this place what made the difference for us was the amazing service! Sophia , the manager, what a fantastic host and cook also!! Really a welcoming , homey atmosphere from all the staff working there. We had the pleasure to also meet the owner of the place who told us nice stories and gave us local tips. If you’re looking for a peaceful place with amazing people this is the one! Everything was just perfect as it was.
- 187nealp (10/5): Lovely secluded retreat - We spent a lovely week at Tingalaya, relaxing in our cottage, sitting by the seawater pool and swimming in the ocean. Really enjoyed meeting the owner David and the staff especially Sophia who cooked our breakfast every morning and Jube who helped us down by the pool when we needed something. This was a delightful location away from the crowds but close enough to get to the hustle and bustle of Negril when we wanted that. Genius Johnson took great care of us driving us everywhere we wanted to go. Hope to come back to Jamaica very soon!

- Shauna (10/5): - I absolutely LOVED my stay at Tingalaya's. Went for a solo quiet retreat and it was just what I needed. The environment was naturalistic and serene. I stayed in one of the smaller Seaview cottages which was a joy to wake up to in the morning. The property does have dogs but they are friendly and don't bother a soul. I found that they only barked for about 5 or so minutes at almost a set time at night - which was actually kinda fascinating (as if they were simply checking in to each other. Beyond that, the place was quiet. Breakfast was DELICIOUS - kudos to the hands that prepared (Sophia and Marie). Big up to Bobby, Jummy (not sure if that's how it's spelt) and Robinson who were very friendly and kept the grounds immaculate and safe. I appreciated that the owner, David, happened to be there as well. He greeted all his guests and took personal interest to make sure we were happy with our stay. Great guy! My only issue was with the internet which didn't really service the cottage and seafront area. But this being a quiet retreat it wasn't a big deal for me... was a good way to tune out of my devices and just... be. It's the right space for others seeking the same kinda escape. I already plan on staying again later this year. Highly recommended.
- KSHAMA (8/5): Quiet retreat in Negril - It is a quiet retreat, with only 7 guest rooms spread across a large area. The garden is lovely with many interesting trees and plants. What didn’t work for us was the bathroom and toilet didn’t have a door , so had to improvise with a sheet strung across the open doorway! Also , was expecting a sandy beach. Instead, access to the sea is across the road in continuation of the property, and through low cliffs. On calm days they can lower a ladder over the cliffs into the sea- we couldn’t experience thus because of rough seas. There is a beautiful salt water pool which is continuously fed with waves crashing into it- absolutely divine to spend hours in the pool without the hassle of getting into the sea! Another unique feature of the property is one can watch BOTH sunrise and sunset from the pool deck! The staff is lovely; special mention of Sophia who cooked us an excellent Jamaican dinner and daily breakfast.
- Elayna (6/5): - We were hoping to have a place to go snorkelling and be in a relaxed place…There were no fish on the reef, the staff were pushy and rude about getting tips - they did not want you to go with another cab company than their own for instance, even though theirs was double the price - huge competition to get tourists to locations for kickbacks - breakfast was good - paid for a dinner and it was absolutely horrible - were sick after it. No water or absolutely anything provided in the room - smelt of mold and red ant infested - we got bit so badly which hurt and itched for days. The furniture was so uncomfortable and no provisions or anything close by. They advertised being a retreat with yoga and none of that happened. The view of the ocean though was spectacular.

The accommodations are bungalows sensitively detailed with a unique fusion of caribbean, indonesian and islamic details nested in a garden of tropical flora and fauna. The Jamaican breakfast is superb with callaloo from the organic garden and fresh coffee every morning. Friendly and attentive staff. Ask for the masseuse ! Caters to large or small groups, families and individuals. A welcoming host with intriguing universal interests. Great place for rejuvenation.

- Glamourphiles (8/5): Off the Beaten Path, Private Paradise - In desperation, after checking in to a hotel room directly across the street from Rick's Cafe that smelled like feces, my husband and I called Tingalaya's Retreat in the middle of the night, begging for a last-minute reservation during their busy season (Christmas holiday). It was well after business hours when we called and a lovely woman answered, patiently listened to our nightmare situation, and kindly, yet hesitantly (because of her service standard) offered us a room that had yet to be "turned over" yet. This was in the time before 'Rona (Dec. 2019) and we were honeymooning. When we arrived at Tingalay's Retreat, even in the pitch-black middle of the night, we had stumbled on something special. Sophia or Maria (can't remember which one) had put fresh sheets on the bed & provided her towels. It had literally been 20 minutes between when we'd called and arrived & they'd hustled to get the room together. When we woke up, we meandered around the grounds, walked across the tiny, dirt road to discover the secret, oceanfront garden where more bungalows, a gazebo & private (sea-salt pool) were. After exploring the grounds, we sat down to freshly prepared, authentically Jamaican breakfast (that can be made to order with notice the day before) with the other guests and even the owner who engaged with all the guests in the morning. As a Jamaican American, I was really confused & bothered by all the other B&B non-Jamaican dining offerings. While staying at Tinagalya's, we were offered breakfast which was included within our rate & could request dinner if we did so by the morning. In terms of concierge, the women that fed us, also connected us with trusted vendors for day trips who were not egregiously priced. We rented mopeds for the time we were there and traveled far & wide on adventures. My only reason for not giving this TR a full five stars is that the "hot water situation". During our stay, hot or even warm water was scarce and the common & only complaint amongst guest. Because everything else was so nice, it was almost as if no one wanted to say anything, but when one hinted at it the floodgates of truth opened up and it seemed that everyone felt the same & that wa the only caveat of TR. Although this is not a Jamaican owned boutique, contrary to other places we stayed, it was obvious that the staff didn't feel undervalued or mistreated because of the genuine level of service they offered. Once they realized that the hot water was not an isolated issue, the men of the crew cute down the trees that were blocking the solar panels that were meant to heat the water. There was an issue and everyone worked expeditiously to resolve the matter and were apologetic. Tinagalay's staff, ambience and authentic vibe are why we reccommended our NY friends to stay there & why, after visiting, they chose to make it their wedding venue. When staying at TR, be sure to tip the staff directly & WELL because without them, the place would not be what it is. Their energy amplifies the ambience that the owner (an American man from DC) created & caused us to overlook any inconveniences like the lack of hot water or occasional mosquito. TR is less like a hotel and definitely a retreat that is equal parts romantic & equal parts restful.

Tingalayas was a small, intimate, quiet oasis away from the hustle and bustle of Negril. Set in the west end of Negril along the cliffs, this lush retreat was the perfect getaway for me and my husband. The ocean fed pool was amazing and the breakfast was one of the highlights of our trip. All fresh fruit, some grown right on the property. The staff were all very helpful, friendly and amazing. We had the pleasure of meeting the owner while he was there and he went out of his way to make our stay special. We especially liked our tour of the gardens and the Meringa Tea! If you want a nice, quiet vacation spot set in a tropical garden right on the sea, this is your place. I have travelled all over, including Negril before, and it was so nice not to be at an all inclusive with the big crowds and loud music. We really enjoyed going off to get our dinner and day trips to the beach, then come home to this perfect place.

- kram5161 (10/5): A treasure in Jamaica - I almost hate to give this amazing place a fabulous review because we want to keep it all to ourselves. This is a beautiful place. A place of peace and a place to enjoy the gorgeous island of Jamaica how it was meant to be experienced. The quietness and intimacy of this boutique "hotel" is perfect for what we were looking for. However I would be remiss in not mentioning the amazing staff. Tingalaya's is what it is because of the people who work here. The grounds are immaculate, the rooms spotless, the breakfasts sublime. We came as a guests and felt like family when we left. We felt a true sense of loss when we could not start our day seeing Sophia, Maria, Boss, Winston, Kevin and of course Jube. What an amazing bunch of people! We will be back to experience this special place again.

Dogs were barking throughout the night. We left the next morning even though we paid for 4 nights. We also paid for dinner the night we got there - it was a few bowls of cold food and a bowl of white lettuce. It was supposed to be $45 for the 2 meals and they tried to bill us $60.00. The breakfast was excellent.

It cools off just enough at night for a comfortable night sleep. The huts are so lovely and romantic. We had or toddler and he really enjoyed the place as well. The breakfasts are so delicious. We purchased almost every supper here as well and it’s the best cooking you will find! The sunsets enjoyed at the pool on the cliffs are unforgettable. Very peaceful property with beautiful vegetation. Yoga available and Karen the yoga instructor is magical. There are mosquitos in the evening and early morning. The *only* downfall is that the neighbourhood dogs bark through the night. Overall this is an amazing spot!

Very nice staff in a luxurious garden setting that includes cliff access to the ocean. Breakfast available and other meals need to be arranged. If you don't have a car you'll need to take a taxi..we used Neville most of the time. as walking at night can be precarious...roads are dark and narrow. Near to Rick's Cafe a must see but rather touristy but they have good music and near to Murphy's and Three Dives for authentic Jamaican...Ivans next to Ricks was great too.. no air conditioning or TVs and that was fine with me..not an all inclusive remember. Great staff Maria, Jupie, Kevin and Neville our driver were kind, gentle and extremely accommodating.Oh, they have dogs that roam so if you are irked by animals don't go. Relax mon it's Jamaica

The grounds are so beautiful and lush, and the ocean and pool are absolutely breathtaking. This is not your generic all-inclusive experience - it is SO much better. It is so beautiful and relaxing and you definitely get a taste of the real Negril. The room was also beautiful and very clean. The staff are some of the nicest people ever. They are so friendly and accommodating and take such great care. I highly recommend staying on the property one evening for dinner and having Maria's amazing Jamaican cooking. Breakfast comes included and is also incredible. Highly recommend visiting this very special place.

The staff are both friendly and accommodating, available anytime for guidance or a good chat. My room was clean and beautifully adorned with antiques and artwork. A ten minute cab ride to beach, I loved how I could get anywhere but was away from all the hustle and bustle of Seven Mile. Breakfast was a standout. Made fresh to order, and locally forged from the grounds, I ate so well I usually went without lunch. The pool area is gorgeous and unlike anything I've ever experienced in Jamaica. Relaxing and refreshing, it's a place where you can truly break from the every day. Highly recommended for those looking to experience Negril in a new light.
- ATN_4 (10/5): Wonderful solo retreat - I stayed at Tingalaya's resort in July 2018. It was my first international solo trip therefore safety was important. I chose the resort because it was small, gated, and had staff on site. The cottage was very cute and clean. I was the only guests there until my last day. I really felt as though I had my own oasis. Staff: The staff was wonderful. I felt completely safe. Maria cooked a delicious breakfast and dinner for me nightly. There are dogs on the property as added secruity. I'm a dog owner so their presence was fine with me. They are trained not to bother the guests so they usually just walked right past me. The ocean fed pool was nice. There was the option to get into the ocean. Although I am a good swimmer the idea of the cliffs and the strong waves deterred me. The atmosphere created by the waves crashing against the rocks is amazing for relaxation. The resort arranged yoga and a massage. I thoroughly enjoyed both of the experiences. I would return again solo.
- KareenG_12 (10/5): Annual friends getaway - Every year my friends and I choose a different place to visit in the month of August. This year we chose Negril and decided to stay at Tingalaya's. We had an awesome time. The staff are friendly...we also met the owner...a lovely gentleman. We stayed for the weekend and had adjoining rooms which we just opened up into one big room for the 4 of us. The rooms were very comfortable and we were impressed by the bathroom as well. Best of all is the secluded pool and cliff hang out...we had a nice picnic there. All in all, if you're looking for a quiet and relaxing holiday...then I'd recommend this retreat to you.
- nathyo2015 (6/5): A Mixed Bag - Things I loved about this place were The Staff: Sophia (Awesome Breakfast Chef) and Kevin (Life guard) who were so good to us while we were there. The salt water pool ( pictures are awesome and still don't do it justice ) Things I did not enjoy : Terrible internet No easy options for lunch or dinner (24hr pre booking needed, but when your on the move made pre planning difficult) Far too remote location; every movement had to be done in a taxi , and as we were out of the town , having supplies gathered were essential as there was no onsite options to buy a few simple bits . The dogs : I like dogs but there were 6 of them had the run of the compound, arriving back late to a load of sleeping dogs at the main entrance was a bit nerve wracking having to walk through as we didn't know the temperament of the animals .. One old dog was kept locked up at night and woke us 2 nights at 3am howling .
- 130scottg (4/5): Not quiet; not close; not clean. But they have good food. - This property is so far out of town and away from the beach that we could have BOUGHT a car with what we spent in taxis. The taxi drivers all ripped us off because we had no choice; the worst rip-off was the driver for the resort. There are 20 or so dogs on the property. Apparently some guests let them in the bungalows, so we had 100's of flea bites, and we are gravely concerned about bringing those fleas home with us (on our clothes; in our suitcases!) Our shower drain was clogged, so the bathroom flooded every time we took a shower (which you will want to do hourly because of the heat and no ac). The ladies that run the place are very nice, and the food is very good, but there aren't many smiles here. The very small "pool" by the ocean is very pretty, with the waves crashing on the rocks around it. You can spend a nice, quiet afternoon there as long as no other guests want to use it at the same time, but don't be fooled by the pictures of "the beach;" it's only about 10 square feet of sand. And the "yoga center" doesn't have an instructor or classes or . . . well, it's just a room. The dogs (with fleas) follow you around, and they growl, bark and fight all night long. If that's not enough to keep you awake in this "quiet retreat," the large nuts that fall on the tin roof of your bungalow and sound like a gunshot at the end of your bed will have you crapping your pants and sitting straight up in bed all night (even if you sleep like a log). And if you like sweating, this is your place. There's no air conditioning. Anywhere. The wi-fi is non-existent, and the cell service is spotty. It's a very pretty setting amidst the foliage and waaaaaay outside of town, but the negatives are stacked up way too high to stay here. Stay on the beach.

- lhayles (10/5): A hidden gem - If you're the type of traveller who loves to experience different things, hates the typical hotel chain or resort type and crowd, or simply a combination of all of the above, the you should book your next getaway at Tingalaya's Retreat. I went there last weekend and the bungalows are amazing. Its set in nature so theres tons of privacy. The property has two sections with the two small cabins by the seaside with the most amazing view and sunsets. There is a salt water pool in the cliffside which the ocean feeds into. Breakfast is included in your stay and is served with a fresh platter of fruits. The staff there is amazing. Ask for Maria she is a gem who will make sure you're comfy!!

- Dennis (8/5): Wonderful remote location away from Negril mayhem - A wonderful remote retreat with a really fantastic staff! Beautiful grounds, well-kept with lots of shade. Bougainvillea and flowering trees abound and we enjoyed walking on flower covered paths to breakfast each morning. Great ocean front with a fun ocean filled salt water pool. We enjoyed the pool and ocean front area for relaxing and chilling out watching the waves and sunsets. There is no beach but they have a lovely sandy area with trees and plenty of shade structures and no sales people. The shore is eroded ancient ocean bed with very sharp surfaces. Ocean edge is mostly a 5 to 10 foot drop to the water. Enter by using a ladder that will be in place when the ocean is calm enough. The included breakfast comes with a great fruit plate, coffee or tea and juice and you can choose from a variety of items from the menu. And, you can show up any time from 7 AM to 11 AM. Sleep in, or go get some coffee to take to your room and eat later. A great way to enjoy the morning. Be sure to try the ackee, callaloo and other Jamaican dishes. They offer optional dinner with advance notice. We had lobster one night and Jerk Chicken another night – wonderful and a very fair price compared to restaurants. Most other restaurants we visited did not have many more choices and the food was not as good as Tingalaya’s. The best part - the staff. They make the Jamaican phrase 'share the love' a reality. They are fun, knowledgeable , friendly, helpful and I could go on and on. Yehman, we enjoyed!
