Guest Reviews
- Malcolm (8/5): Lovely welcome , good food but a little overpriced for the standard of decor - Great position , very quiet and close to the south lakes . The breakfasts were good and plentiful . Staff were very helpful The price didn’t reflect the decor . It was ‘ tired ‘ and needed some work . The paintwork was grubby and our bedroom window didn’t shut very well . The bedroom would have been better with a chair rather than sat on the bed .
- Dave (9/5): - Wonderful staff, couldn't do enough for you. Great pub food.Very comfortable bed... Nothing really.
- Michael (8/5): -
- Tony (9/5): - Friendly staff, good meals Nothing
- Sharon (5/5): Nice location but hotel needs TLC amongst other things - Location was nice. Nice walks and close to Hill Top National Trust property . Staff friendly. Location was lovely but dissapointed with the interior. We did end up booking after other family members and believe ended up with the smallest, compact room with the smallest double bed (Room 5), bathroom was very small as well with just a shower, you had to shut the door to actually use the sink. No outlook at all (other than a rear wall) It was actually a lovely sunny day outside but we had to put the lights on as the room was very dismal even with the curtains open. My relatives had different rooms and were both far superior with big bedrooms, big beds and large bathrooms and we actually paid more than them (Double standard room) . The stairs and landing look well worn and need upgrading as with the paintwork. We did ask if we could change rooms and told no. Evening meal was nice but drinks expensive . Breakfast was ok, shame not free range eggs. Would we return again? No..... until further refurbishment and secure a better room at the front of the property.
- lindsey (10/5): Lovely staff, lovely food , comfy bed - The staff were all so lovely, nothing was too much trouble , its a lovely old building too , we stayed in room 3 , very comfy bed , good shower !! food was EXCELLENT !! drinks were very expensive tho !! Nothing it was lovely
- steven (8/5): Short stay near Hawkshead - Good relaxing and welcoming.
Friendly service and good value. Slightly worn appearance of stair carpet and bedroom carpet. Given the hotel caters for dogs and walkers this was understandable.
- Janice (5/5): The Inn is in a beautiful location its such a shame there's so many repairs that need doing - .The staff and food were very good
Staff always had a lovely smile and greeted us well . Sadly the Inn is in need of a lot of repair .
The room -
Bed was comfy
Carpets were stained
Curtains were stained with dirt
Bathroom very small
Shower was not a power shower
Tap handles were loose and dripped
- James (7/5): Very nice - Very nice location and friendly efficient staff Small en suite and not a king size bed
- Marion (9/5): The staff, and I would say everyone we met, couldn't have been more friendly, helpful and welcoming. - We had evening meals whilst staying, the food was delicious, nicely presented, and the roasts on the Sunday evening were lovely, I would definitely recommend. There wasn't anything we didn't like.
- Joe (10/5): -
- Jane (10/5): -
- steve (10/5): Excellent - Lunch was the best roast ever, breakfast really good n/a
- Nicola Britnell (6/5): Historic country pub not far from Beatrix Potters farm, nice and central to where we wanted to be - The bed was extremely comfortable and the common toilets were clean. Kippers were nice although massively different in size, nice poached eggs, good wine list. Rooms very clean The full english breakfast was burnt/very well done on the bacon and sausage. very small menu the lunch menu was the evening menu with the exception of sandwiches being on the lunch menu. No local produce used which is a shame as the local lamb that we had up the road was fantastic. The high up ornaments were very dusty, brass not polished. The bathrooms have a shower over the bath, which is fine unless you have the roll top bath which has shower curtains all round which stick to you as soon as you turn the shower on, the bathrooms a big enough to house a separate shower cubicle. We always take our own shower gell and hair products but for the price they were small plastic once use only gells that didnt smell overly nice, needs to be a more up market product, felt very Travel Lodge, no shelf by the bath/shower to put any products on unless you leant out of the bath to try and place your products on the windowsill just a bit not thought out for the customer, so much more could be done, with only a few tweeks it could be spectacular
- Grahame (8/5): -
- Agne (10/5): I’ll come again! - Nice and clean room. The restaurant offers delicious food. Free parking. N/A
- Leigh (6/5): Overall it was nice weekend and ideally located for friends who also stayed to watch the Lap runners pass by. - Convenient location for the Lap Ultra event and having on site parking. Room was warm and cosy. Starting to look a little bit tired since the last time stayed here 2 years ago.
- Susan (8/5): -
- Jon (9/5): -
- Jennifer (8/5): Peaceful and cozy - We had a lovely 2-night stay! The highlight of this place is the helpful staff. They have suggestions for touring and helpful directions. The food was also enjoyable. The breakfast always filling and the 1 dinner we had was delicious.
The inn is just a few minutes from the ferry point to cross over to Windermere, which was way more efficiency (and less terrifying) than taking the backroads around the lake. The rooms are ok with a few repairs needs here and there. But we were comfortable. I loved hearing the sheep and birds out our windows.
- Beetham (9/5): -
- Adam (10/5): Absolutely brilliant stay, beautiful location and amazing staff. - Amazing location and wonderful staff.

- Dev4n R (10/5): A Truly Homely Lake District Stay - We stayed at Cuckoo Brow Inn for a few days and genuinely couldn’t have asked for a warmer, more welcoming experience. From the moment we arrived, the team/family made us feel completely at home friendly, attentive, and always happy to help with anything me, my partner, and our little pooch needed.
Our room was cosy, clean, and perfect for unwinding after long walks around the beautiful surrounding countryside with our dog. The atmosphere throughout the inn is relaxed and comforting, with that classic Lake District charm that makes you want to settle in with a cup of tea and stay a while.
A special mention goes to how wonderfully they accommodated us. It made the whole stay feel effortless and personal. We all enjoyed our time and the delicious food here so much, and it truly felt like a home away from home.
We’re already hoping to return on our next Lake District trip. Highly recommended for anyone looking for comfort, warmth, and a genuinely welcoming stay. They're super dog friendly and that was a bonus for us. Nothing
- Mark (9/5): Super-friendly and great value hotel in a stunning location. - Fantastic location. Tasteful decor and comfortable dog friendly facilities Nothing to dislike
- Tom (9/5): Lovely stay - we’ll be back - Been a few times before - has to be the most dog friendly hotel around - not fancy but just feels friendly and comfortable All good
- Sarah (10/5): -
- Michael (9/5): A perfect hotel for dog lovers who enjoy good food in beautiful surroundings. - Superb breakfast and excellent evening meal selections. The staff were friendly and helpful and the hotel is perfect if you have a dog . We are already planning our next trip. You won’t regret staying here. Nothing readily springs to mind.
- Sommer (10/5): -
- Mary (8/5): -
- Lucy (8/5): Pleasant stay, lovely staff and beautiful area. - Lovely area with plenty of walking routes. Staff were very friendly and accommodating and food was good. The bathrooms were a little dated and the shower water was temperamental if needing a longer wash.
- Andrew (9/5): Perfect for what we wanted - Great location for sky watching , comfortable bed . Nothing
- Ian (9/5): -
- Bryan (9/5): Quiet beautiful location. - Great friendly staff & location
- Faye (8/5): - Fantastic location, traditional feel, incredibly friendly staff. We were celebrating my partners birthday and they organised helium balloons and a banner in the room. Friendliness of the staff really made it special.
- Joan (10/5): -
- Lynn (9/5): -
- mrs heather (9/5): lovely and friendly relaxing my grandkids loved it staff lovely place area perfect. - the staff the room. the area
- Chapman (10/5): - Prefect location for dogs and walks. Amazing food. Lovely people who run it.
- emily (8/5): -
- Janet (8/5): -
- Guest (8/5): - Staff attentiveness.
- Tim (9/5): very good all round - the food the first room offered .. it was changed
- Guest (9/5): -
- Debby (9/5): Very peaceful and relaxing location. Great food. Clean and comfortable room. - Very friendly and attentive staff but not overwhelming. Lovely to see so dog friendly. Very peaceful and relaxing location. Great food and facilities. We stayed in a room at the back which was a little dark but still very clean and comfortable.
- Alexis (9/5): -
- PGoodguest (7/5): Good value and comfortable country hotel - Comfortable countryside hotel in pleasant location in Lakes away from very busy areas. Good value for money. Typical pub food. Good breakfast
- Pamela (10/5): Always a lovely stay. Staff are lovely and make us want to return - Everything: room, breakfast and staff Nothing at all it’s perfect
- Yvonne (10/5): - Lovely Room, the food is excellent!
Location perfect for walks from the doorstep Nothing
- Vanessa (10/5): Cuckoo Brow heaven - In short, everything. The staff were very welcoming. The hotel was small , but perfect in every way. Value fir money Nothing.
- Mike (8/5): -
- Gray (8/5): -
- Emma (10/5): - Quiet area to stay in, ideal for an overnight but wouldn't stay multiple nights as it's out the way of the places we want to see and things to do, comfy bed and pillows, decent shower, lovely food, had dinner then breakfast, staff were lovely, would definitely recommend for a quiet getaway. Area is quite secluded but meant it was quiet and chilled.
- ROSALIND (10/5): Wonderful stay at the Cuckoo Brow Inn. - The Cuckoo Brow is set in a prefect location close to the lakes & with lovely walks on the doorstep. Our room was spacious clean & the bed was super comfortable, the bathroom was large & clean with great views from both bedroom & bathroom windows. The food is amazing & I can’t express how delicious the steak pie & mash was, breakfast was just as delicious. To be honest the food was some of the best I have ever eaten & I’ve eaten in some top establishments in the past. The Staff were really nice & accommodating, I wished we had stayed another day to enjoy the location/ food, in all 10 out of 10 for the Cuckoo Brow Inn. Plus they allow dogs to stay which is great for dog owners. There is nothing not to like.
- Claire (10/5): - Location and family run
Food
- Gary (8/5): Very good will return - All the food was amazing Bed wasn’t comfortable
- Lewis (10/5): -
- John (8/5): -
- Thomas (10/5): A great place for a Lakeland getaway - Amazing location. Really friendly staff, great breakfast. Nothing
- Lucinda (3/5): Don’t stay, unless you are upstairs - The staff, overall, were lovely and any positive feelings we have reflect this. The location is ace too. The main dining area was lovely. Although as already picked up in some reviews, perhaps tired looking decor and finish. I do want to add it’s not because some of the pieces are antiques or vintage, I expect those to look old - I mean the paint work and finish.
I suspect if you’re in a room upstairs you’ll have an overall better experience. We stayed in Room 10 in the stables. The smell of damp, mould and stagnant air was fairly oppressive. There was mould an mildew on the curtains. Mould around the window frame. The showerhead was so black with mould that I cleaned that myself before letting my son have a shower. There was mould behind the sink and behind the shower.
One of the lights was broken and the top bunk has no barrier so not suitable for any child to sleep on, because if they accidentally rolled they would be off that top bunk in no time.
We only stayed one night. We had to stay one night as our kids were exhausted on arrival. We did highlight our concerns on our first morning. The manager told us it’s because they are a dog friendly and old hotel. We asked to move rooms but were told that was not possible- they did improve and clean the showerhead but the rest of the mould was still there when we returned after a day trip.
I refute the dog friendly element, we have dogs in our lives and had literally come from two other dog friendly hotels that did not have the same smell (dogs as far as I know don’t cause mould or damp). The old property might be true as there was an air of damp and this does happen in old properties where there is neglect. As again our own house is older than the inn (and no mould or damp) and the previous hotel we stayed in Scotland was a 100 years older (again no mould or stench of damp).
Overall I do not recommend this hotel as the response from the hotel has been poor, and although we initially had good interactions with them the feeling we have now is that customer service and hospitality is the lowest interest to them. I have so many photos so this is just a small selection.
- Hopson (6/5): - Staff, shower, bed, breakfast Pillows, cold bathroom, curtains
- Carole (5/5): Pleasant stay. - Beautiful location Looking a bit tired! Mentioned that the curtains in the bedroom needed attention. Also nowhere to hang towel in the bathroom as the hook was broken, mentioned this to the staff but nothing was done about that or the curtains.

- Rhian (10/5): Great location for a short break, very close to Beatrix potter house. - Beautiful quaint hotel, rooms gorgeously decorated.
Friendly staff, fantastic choice for breakfast
We also stayed for evening meal and this also was fantastic Nothing
- Isabel (9/5): A lovely Lake District stay! - Great location. A lovely traditional inn with some quirky features. Wonderful staff. Super comfortable beds. Tasty evening meal. We would have happily stayed longer Full Cumbrian Breakfast was tasty with good quality ingredients but would have benefitted from everything being cooked to order rather than some being pre cooked and kept warm!
- Amy (9/5): - Great location to where we wanted to be, staff were friendly and welcoming & couldn’t do enough for us when we unfortunately came down with an illness. Nothing, it’s a lovely B&B
- Gary (10/5): - Location was perfect for a relaxing break in the Lakes. The staff, room, food were all perfect. No dying room for wet clothes after walking in the rain.
- Justine (8/5): Gorgeous pub in a beautiful village with fantastic hosts - I love the location of Cuckoo Brow. It’s a friendly pub in a beautiful little village with amazing walks from the doorstep. Not much at all. If I had to pick something I’d say the quality and variety of the breakfast could be improved.
- John (4/5): Rather disappointing and we won't be returning. - The location is lovely. The food was very average. Pie, chips and peas clearly all from frozen. The steak was OK. The beds were saggy and not particularly comfortable and the room was pretty cramped with no view. Not good for £150 per night.
- Farrer (10/5): - Genuine authentic mauritan food and genuine English style breakfast. very kind friendly staff. There was nothing to complain about
- Irene (10/5): Peaceful and comfort - Everything Nothing
- anita (9/5): Relaxing and memorable - Perfect location for us to be able to walk for miles. The manager and family running the hotel were charming, friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. We had a fabulous time and would go back. If I were to pick up on anything I’d say the hotel is in need of a spruce up and redecorating.
- Eithne (9/5): Quiet, friendly, understated Lakela d retreat. - The situation, the friendly quiet, the calm homely comfort. There was everything we needed, everything worked, everything was comfortable. There was no attempt at 'luxury', nothing pretentious, no Olde Worldiness. It suited us down to the ground but would not suit anybody looking for smart, or for nighttime activity.
- neil (10/5): Fabulous place in the Lakes to stay - I love the position
And the food was great
The staff were excellent Nothing
- Reuben (8/5): Very good staff very friendly - Good location A little bit tired in places
- James Michael (8/5): Lovely stay. Staff amazing and great food. Dog friendly - Away from the busy parts of Windermere but close enough by car and the ferry crossing/attractions. The team at The Cuckoo Brow Inn are so friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent and great value for money. Some parts of the property are a little rough around the edges but that is also the charm of the property
- stephen (9/5): Great place & great location - Staff very friendly and the room was lovely Nothing
- Waite (9/5): - The cosy and quiet atmosphere Nothing
- Peter (7/5): Cosy inn in a stunning location. - A very cosy place to stay in a beautiful location. The view from the room was stunning & the bed was big and very comfortable. Dig friendly & food was tasty with gf options available. Staff very friendly. The room was smaller than expected & didn’t have everything as described online. Perhaps lacking a few more places to sit & chill.
- Anup Karath (7/5): -
- Sonia (10/5): Couldn’t have been any better. No complaints at all. Great. - Delicious breakfast. Evening meals were wonderful. Wonderful attentive pleasant staff. A couple of more plug points in the bedroom. The only accessible one was a double near the kettle and we had to reach behind the unit to use it.
- Anita (9/5): Great one night stay. Travelled with my teenage son and puppy. Great location, friendly staff and tasty food. Would rec - Great staff, very friendly and hospitable. Nothing.
- emma (6/5): - Lovely location Rooms very dated and breakfast wasn’t the best.
- Anthony (8/5): - Breakfast and dinner were good.
- Emma (7/5): -
- Jamie (10/5): Perfect - Location

Staff Great
- Sarah (2/5): - Friendly staff Premises very rundown and in need of renovation.
Family room far too small with virtually no storage space. Bathroom very tired.
Stale smell throughout.
