Guest Reviews
- Sevan (8/5): -
- Claire (10/5): Beautiful peaceful nestled in nature - Peaceful retreat with spectacular views. Settled in nature with a perfect rainforest. Nothing!
- Scovia (10/5): Amazing nature feels. Place was well away from city/ town noises but still a short distance travel when we wanted. W - Amazing nature feels. Place was well away from city/ town noises but still a short distance travel when we wanted. There was no outdoor lighting to enjoy the night views during the dark.
- Stephen (8/5): - We loved the facilities and the grounds The bathroom could do with a good scrub, the timber around the pool requires replacing and appeared unsafe in some spots and the spa cover was just screwed up and left to the side
- Anneke (10/5): Incredible Rainforest Cabin - We loved our stay here, surrounded by the rainforest, was incredible to wake up to, so peaceful and quiet. and even a peacock roaming around. The gardens are so well kept, wish we had a chance to try the pool. Lived that the bath was in the room though :D No complaints đ maybe just a small sign at the entrance gate to say the height limit that can fit through haha
- Gabriel (1/5): There is no hot shower water - Peaceful There is no hot shower water

- Cornelissen (1/5): Overall, the stay fell well below expectations and did not reflect the standard or value advertised. - We recently stayed at Azabu Retreat and Spa for a special anniversary weekend and were unfortunately very disappointed with our experience. We tried to resolve these issues with management, but could not come to a resolution.
Upon arrival, we were provided with an envelope containing a key but were not greeted by any staff, which felt impersonal and lacking in hospitality. Inside our room (Queen Bed, Room 5), cleanliness was below expectations. The floors were noticeably sticky and did not appear properly cleaned, requiring us to wear sandals or socks throughout our stay. There were also several insects present in the room.
The Wi-Fi was unusable for both days of our stay despite showing as connected. We attempted troubleshooting on multiple devices without success.
We used the spa bath on the first evening but noticed significant maintenance concerns. The surrounding wood was rotting, and there were missing tiles that exposed gaps to the outside. This raised safety concerns and we chose not to use the bath again. The wooden mat placed around the bath appeared to be covering further deterioration. While seated in the bath, we could also clearly see under the bed, where there was visible dust and discarded wrappers, indicating it had not been vacuumed thoroughly. Managment acknowledged maintenance concerns, but said they are renovating soon, yet still let the property be booked out.
We were unable to comfortably use the outdoor area due to a high number of mosquitoes, and no preventative measures (such as citronella candles) were provided. This meant we needed to keep doors and windows closed, making the room feel dark and less inviting than presented in the listing photos.
Noise was another major issue. The plumbing was extremely loud when neighbouring guests used their bath or shower after 10pm,waking us up both nights, it was louder than what should be expected.
- Claudio (10/5): -
- Olifent (8/5): A pleasant stop over. - Room was very clean. Gardens were immaculatr. We did not use the pool however there seemed to be some maintenance required around this area.
- Michael (7/5): -
- Todd (6/5): - Location and quiet A bit run down not what it looks like in the pictures
- Griffiths (10/5): Was a great place to unwind and relax - Sauna and pool were great, the view from bed was so lovely, very nice looking out into the bush from bed. Very peaceful and quiet, lots of nature sounds and a great environment for really unwinding. It is still only a short drive to all the activities Byron has to offer;ie: great restaurants, beaches and bush walks.
- Claudia (2/5): Big security concerns - The room was nice, clean and new. Upon arriving at Azabu, we parked the car and proceeded to Reception. There were envelopes laid out with guestsâ last names, each containing a metal room key.
We easily found our envelope, however we noticed that three additional envelopes for our same room were also present, clearly prepared for upcoming arrivals. As Reception was unlocked and unattended, this meant that anyone could have taken one of these envelopes and accessed our room.
Concerned for our safety, my fiancĂ© took all envelopes related to our room to prevent unauthorised access. We attempted to contact the assistance/emergency number displayed at Reception multiple times â both calls and messages â with no response. Eventually, we managed to reach the manager.
Unfortunately, the manager was dismissive and failed to understand the seriousness of the situation. We were told that due to public holiday rates, no staff had been rostered, and therefore all keys had been prepared in advance. The manager also attempted to shift blame onto my partner for taking the envelopes, rather than addressing the clear security lapse.
We expressed that we felt unsafe, and were ultimately promised a 50% refund, which we have in writing. This refund was never processed and the manager has stopped responding our messages.
This experience was extremely disappointing and unacceptable. While the property itself is lovely, the lack of basic security and follow-through made us feel unsafe.
- KD (7/5): - The ease of checking in I wanted to provide some feedback about my recent experience at the property. Unfortunately, the cleanliness and facility conditions did not meet expectations.
The floors appeared not to have been mopped.
The spa did not appear to be functioning or offer a proper spa experience.
Iâd appreciate it if you could look into these issues, as they impacted the quality of my stay.
Thank you for your attention.
- Estefany (10/5): - Great place, clean and perfect location! Yes, a lot!
- Amanda (9/5): A lovely, quiet room set in the bush and still close to Byron Bay - This is a 'retreat' with only 5 (I think) rooms set in the bush above Byron Bay but still very close to the town. It was very peaceful and our room had a balcony that overlooked the bush so it was a lovely place to have a drink and breakfast. The top windows are not covered so when one is laying in bed it feels as if one is sleeping in the bush and under the stars (but it is completely private). The room was comfortable and well-appointed and there was adequate parking. This is not a criticism but an observation. We did not see or meet any staff either when we arrived or departed. A few instructions in the room would be helpful.
- Matthew (1/5): The photos are old and outdated. They donât accurately reflect the actual condition of the accommodation - It was set in a nice forest location It was very old and run down. Quite a lot of damage, wood rot, water damage and scuff marks everywhere. The pool facility was unusable because it was filled with leaves and hadnât been cleaned.
I tried to contact management but never got a response. There were no staff on site.
- Madelle Rose (3/5): It was an ok stay overall, renovation is ongoing and hoping services and facilities will be improved. - We love the location as it is away from the city centre, nice and quiet. No receptionist, it could be nicer if there is one staff present to ask for, no reply received from âreceptionistâ when asked about the massage. Also, it says that they will clean the room everyday, but it wasnât.
- Emma (3/5): - The bed was comfy The swimming pool which I wanted to use was SO dirty! There was no wifi. The toilet runs. The spa bath was IN the bedroom! - this establishment wouldâve been good 1980s! But not now!!! âResort &
Spaâ was VERY far fetched! They shouldnât be allowed to call themselves that!! A text the morning of check in to me saying âsorry no breakfast this weekâ - this was part of the reason why I booked here! ⊠I responded to the text - and nothing!
- Dylan (10/5): -
- Jeanpaul (10/5): -
- Thanh (8/5): -
- Glenn (8/5): Overall we loved staying here - a great place to unwind and relax - Host was brilliant and made us feel very comfortable and welcome. Breakfast each morning was awesome. We had a couples day spa treat and the two ladies were very professional, and we came away feeling great The room we stayed in was very small and in need of some TLC. The weather was good but not warm enough for a swim and the pool needed to have a vacuum
- Helen (9/5): very comfortable beautiful experience - The beautiful locatation wonderful experience the rocky road to get there
- Tanya (9/5): -
- Tanya (10/5): Friendly staff, tucked away from the hustle and bustle, nature all around including an entire peacock family. Just beaut - Tranquil setting. Value for money. Close enough to town. Room a little small but ok for a couple of days away. Maintenance noise daily.
- Leah (10/5): Peaceful, quiet and serene - We loved how peaceful and quiet it was. We also loved the view from our bedroom looked out into the forest There was nothing I didn't like it was everything we wanted
- Diana (7/5): Lovely room in a beautiful location and staff very helpful but needs some maintenance - Great location, and TP at the front desk was a pleasure to deal with.
Booked a massage at the Spa which was wonderful.
The room was lovely and it was very peaceful to sit out on the deck and listen to the birds (and the cows!)
And peacocks by the pool was a lovely sight. There was no sound proofing so you could hear everything from the guests next door.
The room was beautiful but needs some maintenance- showerhead held on by a strap, broken tiles beside the spa which exposed a hole in the floor.
The road to get to Azabu was very pot-holed so need to be careful driving in.
- miriam (6/5): - The surroundings and environment were lovely, the pool area was nice the bed very comfortable. The unit had no comfortable seating, kitchen area small and not user friendly, unit wasn't cleaned very well, needed more places to hang items.
- Chandra (1/5): - Property is good but they didnât tell us about the construction going on and it was very noisy The construction going on onsite and no one told me
- Emma (10/5): -
- Claire (5/5): Extremely bad value for money. No welcome, no facilities âŠâŠ donât be hoodwinked by the forest location - The room had apparently just been built (according to the builder who was the only person other than the gardener that we saw) so it was brand new and immaculate. The bathroom was gorgeous.
As it is remote and no food for several miles they provide a microwave, toaster and portable electric hob in the room. It would have been good to know these facilities were there so that we could have brought food in.
The location in the forest is great and the dawn chorus was awesome There is literally nothing here. The advertised breakfast option âŠâŠ nope. The spa? Errrm nope. There is a (teeny tiny) pool and a kind of hot tub but the water was cloudy and brown.
In the printed details left for us on the reception desk we were advised that you could be easily heard - presumably little sound insulation - and we were requested to be aware we could be heard and to be quiet.
There was a toilet for pool guests right outside our room - assuming there was no sound insulation this would have been grim except nobody used the pool - probably cos the water looked horrible.
The balcony for the room needs loungers - and the gardener (or owner?) really should not use the path outside the balcony as this entirely invades any privacy you have in the room. Similarly, what I assume is the owners house along with some building equipment (cement mixer etc) really should be screened off as it overlooks the balcony and does nothing to enhance the sense of peace and isolation guests are probably looking for.
There is such an opportunity to embrace the forest location and be really sustainable but there was no sense of this. So for example, the small bottles of (low quality) toiletries should be replaced with large bottles of quality products as most hotels are doing.
The WiFi (the password for which was not available anywhere until the builder gave it to me) was extremely poor and mainly didnât work at all.
- Marcus (4/5): -
- Alex (4/5): Nice place but poorly kept - Place was quite nice with lots of potential The maintenance was quite poor, leaves everywhere which is understandable given the trees around but it should be blowed off daily. The glass sliding door had detached and I had to re screw it in. Our tv remote didnât work and the tv was very small. There was mold and dust in lots of places such as the shower and air conditioning. Additionally there was spiderwebs in the room which was a bit disappointing. Given how pricey the room was it was big let down that these basic standards were not met.
- Sundaram (1/5): Disappointing - The bed was comfortable Upon arrival, the room lacked several basic essentials that would reasonably be expected, including a closet, any form of luggage storage, bedside tables, and chairs.
The overall maintenance of the property was poor. The outdoor pool, spa, and the small private outdoor area attached to the room were littered with leaves and bark from surrounding trees. Contrary to the listing description, there were no Wellness Centre or activity areas available. Sleep was also disrupted very early in the morning due to sunlight streaming through louvered windows above the sliding doors, with no adequate light control.
Most concerning was that the online photos and written description did not reflect the actual condition or facilities of the accommodation. For a cost exceeding AUD 900 for a two-night stay, the experience was extremely disappointing and did not represent value for money. It is also very disappointing as Booking.com did not do their independent assessment and relied on outdated images!
- Vu (7/5): -
- Dr. Joachim (6/5): Preis Leistung und Lage in Ordnung - Die Lage und der Pool Personal haben wir nicht gesehen. HandtĂŒcher gabâs trotz Pool nur einmal
- jamislater (10/5): Nous avons absolument adoré séjourner au magnifique refuge « Earthly ». Tous les équipements étaient soigneusement inclu -
- Gary (6/5): -
- Brie (8/5): -
- Carolina (10/5): -
- Tyla (10/5): After a full on few days at wategos we decided to retreat into the bush and Azabu was exactly what we needed to unwind a - Peaceful, tranquil, great facilities
- Zane (1/5): Please don't waste your hard cash in this shonky place - Honestly nothing to enjoy at the accommodation There was no staff on or would they answer the phoneto answer any questions. As we got the room it stunk mouldey room look nothing as advertised microwave was filthy no hot water on 2nd nite not only in our room but multiple rooms advertised a day spa there wasn't as appertently by contacter its getting renovated which does not say in the advertisement the pool had stale water
- Adam (1/5): - Itâs old and outdated. Construction happening next to our room woke us at 7am. The worker slapped a hose against my car with no apology. 1/10 is not low enough
- Rebecca (6/5): Pretty spot, oodles of potential, but a little too rundown for the price. - View from the room was gorgeous. Great location a short drive from Byron, very peaceful. King size bed was very comfortable and the balcony meant we could sit outside and enjoy the fresh air. Loved the big door leading to outside. Never saw a single staff member the entire stay, except one person who was complaining to another staff member how loud the guests were. People aren't coming out to your romantic little resort to quietly play cards, my dude. Either soundproof the rooms or get head phones. Other bugbears were shower had zero water pressure, rooms were quite run down, pool needed a clean. It looks like they might be doing a little renovating (there were boxes and bits of wood everywhere) but they need to shut down for a month, give it a good refresh, and re-open. It could be an absolute gem.
- Adam (6/5): Disappointed with how the peacefulness was ruined - The rooms and pool area are lovely There was construction work going on which was starting early in the morning and woke us up directly next door, this ruined the peacefulness of our stay. We also never saw the staff and I tried to contact them by phone and never answered
- Millar (3/5): -
- Ricki (10/5): - Absolutely breathtaking and peaceful!
- Christopher (9/5): -
- Federico (5/5): It needs a lot of maintenance.... - The view from the room
Air conditioning
Pool area
Parking The photos on Booking.com are really old; it's very clear the place isn't properly maintained. The walls were covered in dust from top to bottom, the silicone on the sink counter was dried out and looked bad, cockroaches were hiding in the bathroom, the spa's paint was peeling, some of the baseboards were rotten, the path was dirty and neglected, and it had no lighting at night, as the photos show, the table and chair in the photos, nestled among the trees, are now just remnants amidst rubble in the background, the deck where they show the loveseat is dirty, dusty, and neglected, and the concrete stairs leading down from the parking lot to the path were also destroyed.
- Korben (7/5): - Loved the pool, hot tub and the room Parking felt a bit small
- Rod (1/5): - We attended the property and met the owner John, who is doing renovations .we were able to check the room that we had booked and was going to return later that day. We were unable to return later that day as we had a medical emergency back home for my mother who is 91. I left messages as well as text to the owners to inform them what had happened but did not receive any communication. I thought that they could have contacted me directly and maybe give me a credit for a future visitation. Seems like they just want the money and we are very disappointed
- Brenna (5/5): -
- FIONA (3/5): Very dissappointing - Breakfast was not available during our stay which was dissappointing as the booking website made breakfast sound great so had wanted to have the option to have breakfast Property and room was tired and there was no staff on reception at any time during our stay. We didn't see any staff for our whioe stay until we were leaving. Pool was not clean and had a green tinge and was freezing cold. Plunge pool/jacquzzi
next t the pool was not working. There was no
maid service during our whole stay so we had no clean towels or bed made or any cleaning done. The jacquzzi in the room was small, old and not very appealing or as expected from the booking advert
- Virginia (5/5): Very disappointed in the customer relations which didnât exist and no care taken on upkeep of plants all were dying exi - Very peaceful and quiet and a lovely setting in the bush.
No staff around at all it was like it was run by ghosts!
When we texted after hours number we were given wasnât acknowledged and we could see they had read it.
We were simply asking for a later check out. Also we were promised clean towel and sheets replacement each day and this didnât happen. Couldnât get our car out of the driveway on the last day because tradies parked us in.
- stautner (1/5): definitely a waste of money, iâm appalled at this experience here. - i liked the location. I didnât like that the âspa roomâ was non existent and was currently under construction it seemed. I didnât like that the pool looked dirty and not taken care of in terms of cleanliness. My room had mould and cracks in the walls. I woke up at 7am to construction and banging of hammers!
- Viana (5/5): Would never recommend the place. As a person who is actively in the hospitality industry, this is almost an embarrassmen - Lovely concept and location Cobwebs covered the ceiling
Loud ticking noise from the fan
We donât even see the reason why a tv was there hanging on the wall.
Towel rack was loose just about to fall off the wall.
- Jan (6/5): -
- Craig (7/5): -
- Simon (5/5): Comfortable stay. Disappointed with the presentation due to maintenance issues - The location was good. Peaceful There is a lot of maintenance that is needed. Rotting timber that needs replacing. The sink drained slowly and needs maintenance.
Overall maintenance is needed to freshen up the units.
- Isha (10/5): -
- Peta (10/5): A peaceful and relaxing stay with friendly staff, a quiet location, and great amenities like the pool, sauna, and spa ba - Had a lovely stay in Byron Bay! đż The staff were super friendly and welcoming, and the location was peaceful and quiet â perfect for a relaxing getaway. I especially loved the pool and sauna, and the spa bath was such a treat after a long day exploring. Would definitely stay again! đ The road in is atrocious! The council definitly need to do something about this!
- Rachel (5/5): - Rainforest setting Cockroach in bath, no reception, no daily cleaning as specified
- Lani (4/5): Not for us next time - somewhat quiet and private It was pretty poky.
It was supposed to have breakfast included. Had to phone the owner, and it seemed too hard for him, so we went to town and paid for our own. We got a heap of excuses, and he would chase up a refund for us and never did.
Carrying bags up & down 3 flights of stairs
- Lina (6/5): - They offered breakfast in the booking but when we checked in, they said that breakfast wasnât given, even though we did pay for it. We reached out the staff but non answer was received.
- Jodi (2/5): Disappointing run down - The location and serenity Run down place, broken tiles, flooring, mould, limited provisions, hot tub cold, pool dirty, no breakfasts available, tripping hazards, nil staff to greet or around at all, has a lot of potential if some love and maintenance was done
- Scott (3/5): The rooms are very small. Be aware you literally walk in the front door directly into the bathroom vanity. - It was very quite and away from the business of Byron You open the front door directly into the vanity unit. The cabin is very very very small. We were going to have a swim however I think it was the owner. I was just leaning against the fence staring at the pool the entire time we felt very uncomfortable and therefore did not have a swim. A lot of maintenance is required.
- Daniel (1/5): -
- Kate rose (10/5): - Massages Room was quiet small but enough for the night & we couldn't listen to music to relax because rooms were so close to each other.
- Amy (8/5): Beautiful Nature Retreat - We loved our weekend away here! The spa bath was awesome and being surrounded by nature was just what we needed. We will definitely be back again :)
- Pereira CristĂłfaro (10/5): -
- Douglas Mills (10/5): A little gem. - The gardens and individual rooms. The very comfy beds. A huge refurbishment has started and will be spectacular when completed mid 2026.
This quiet and peaceful little gem is not to be missed
We're looking forward to our next visit. Keep going guys, you're doing a great job. The property was a little run down, but the new owners have already started on the massive refurbishing project that will be stunning when completed.
- Ummi (3/5): -
- Lenore (8/5): -
- Rhonda (5/5): - The bed was comfortable The iron was broken, no coffee. Quite warn out.
- Anna-Lena (3/5): Poor value for money and not at all as shown on the photos but has a lot of potential - The location is absolutely beautiful The property is very old and run down. The woodwork requires a lot of maintenance and attention. In our room the shower door was broken, the basin full of cracks, the bed-lamps not functional and the ceiling fan broken. It does not feel clean.
- Lynette (7/5): Green, peaceful setting away from the crowds! - Loved the quiet bush setting and close enough to Byron centre. The bumpy road to get to the property ⊠not their fault! Thought some refreshment needed âŠ.. timber and paint work.
- Kevin (10/5): Cute spa rooms, with outdoor deck, feels like a whole world away but still close to beaches. - Loved stay here. Room was nice, comfy robe, and spa was great. If don't have a car it's a short Uber to main street and beach. Had a nice little outside deck with furniture and an additional outdoor little spa and pool if you like. With a car was super convenient. Room had all conveniences i.e. bar fridge, climate control etc. Oh and free ground Byron Bay coffee which was really nice. No room for table inside. Not an issue for me though, as table on deck outside, but just note if needing a larger area to eat inside could be an issue.
- Denise (10/5): -
- Michelle (8/5): - Beautiful setting,
- Amy (9/5): -
- Tanya (8/5): Lovely couple retreat for the night - Location was a little off the beaten track which was different, and peaceful. Lovely bush Outlook. The room was charming and the bed comfortable. The in floor spa bath was a nice touch after a long day. The gentleman at reception was lovely and very helpful. Rooms could do with a few minor repairs. We had to go down a few stairs to get to the room, which was OK, but would be challenging for some to manage, especially with luggage.
- Lisa (5/5): Was excited for a beautiful retreat⊠but thatâs not what we got. - Would have been amazing in its day. Nice and quiet. Needs a good upgrade. Bed and pillows uncomfortable. Pool and spa were dirty. The deck area was mostly a badly weathered bamboo fence with only a small section showing the trees. The wood on the rails and door frame was badly deteriorated. Had a hard time sliding open the big glass doors as they were weathered. Tv did not have any channels. The road leading up to it is terrible, very large potholes. Such a shame as we had high expectations based on the photos. I didnât take many to post here- but you can see the view is not what is advertised.
