Guest Reviews
- Pauline (4/5): - Two people checked in, but there was only one face towel and washcloth. Other amenities for only one person. No sign for Howard Johnson, only recognized by street number. New name Capri Motel. My Expedia reservation was not in their system. Things worked out, but definitely not what we expected in terms of standard of service.
- Jon (6/5): - The place is maintained and run well enough. But the walls are paper thin (like you can hear the tv in the next room very clearly), the mattress is thin, the parking access is cramped.
- Denise (10/5): So sad to see the closing of Howard Johnsons - This is the best place to stay in Bay Area. It's quiet, clean, close to everything, including family & friends. They are the nicest people. It is VERY sad that it is closing in January.
- Mrs X (8/5): A good place to stay. - Clean. Friendly staff. 5min walk to train station and easy train ride yo San Fran. 30 minute walk to university. Bus stop right outside hotel - easy bus ride to university. 15 minute walk to downtown Berkeley. I’ve stayed here twice and the area is safe. Would definitely stay again.
- Verified traveler (4/5): adequately clean, but very basic - The room was clean and bed was comfortable. Beyond that, not much to recommend it. Bathroom door did not fully close; fridge barely cold enough; smoke detector covered with plastic(!!); furnishings pretty beat up.
- scottgW1368OD (10/5): Great Place to Stay In Berkeley - Room was very clean, quiet and reasonably priced.
The check-in process was very easy.
The location is great with tremendous access to public transportation (BART/buses)!
I would stay here again in the future when visiting the UC & Berkeley area.
- lindy (8/5): - Ok
- Gary (10/5): - One night. Fit the purpose
- Noel (8/5): Don’t leave belongings in your vehicle. - A car was broken into.
- Jon (8/5): - Everything in this motel was good. A lot of food options in the area. Had good ammentities such as laundry. The staff was great. They were easy to talk to. I would give this location 9/10 mainly because it wasnt ready when i arrived early and ive wouldve paid an early fee to check in
But it is what it us.
- Susie (10/5): - It was because my daughter is in the hospital so we were just there to sleep
- Hektor (6/5): - Cold environment, no safe gates for the cars, sketchy neighborhood that felt unsafe
- Ha (8/5): - Convenient, close to University and reasonable price.
- Graciela (8/5): - Location was perfect for my short visit to the area. The room was clean and the staff were friendly. Only drawback was the traffic made it difficult to get out of the parking lot during rush hour.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Good for a night - Good location. Comfortable beds. Breakfast was terrible and we skipped it.
- Irene (6/5): - I like the fact that they have free parking. Also, the receptionist was very attentive to our needs.
- Adriana (2/5): Think twice before booking - Found dirty shorts in one of the drawers. Had to ask for basic necessities since it was not found in the room. Basic toiletries, I.e. shampoo, soap, etc. Room smelled badly. Parking was incredibly tight. It was not a good experience at all.
- Juan (10/5): - Good location, friendly reception staff, clean rooms and parking available on premises for no additional fee.
- Sylvia (10/5): - Would stay again
- Anna (10/5): - People next to us were talking loud till 1am however the stay was great
- Marath (8/5): - Great staff. Sai was excellent, very cordial and punctual
- Ellen Linda (8/5): - It’s a 6-minute easy walk to BART station. Property itself is fine and close to buses as well as BART. Only negative is area feel sketchy - I think its fine during day, but I would NOT go out after dark in this particular neighborhood.
- Ernest (8/5): - Location
- Jose (8/5): - Very pleased with the cleanliness of the place, it’s a simple place but comfortable.
- Daniel (10/5): - Very good value for money. Good bus routes. Helpful and friendly staff. Some shopping opportunities
- Deborah (10/5): - I love that there was on site parking. The location was very good. The room itself was very clean, but it smelled of smoke upon arrival.
Plus, I assume bathroom window was open to get rid of the smell, but I was worried about the window locking properly, once smell went away.
The manager was extremely helpful and kind.
I would definitely stay here again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Easy check in and friendly, attentive service for a budget motel chain. Housekeeping had our room neat as a pin.
- Zachary (10/5): Good stay at the HoJo Berkeley - Good experience overall. Good parking. Good interactions with management. Central location in Berkeley. Was able to sleep through the night even though The pillows and mattress were not as comfortable as I would like.
- Nicolas (4/5): - So noisy, it is impossible to sleep.
- Mark (4/5): - Smelly room
- Omid (8/5): - clean and affordable
- Wenchao (10/5): - Strongly recommended! Very good place to live in for both comfort and cost efficiency
- Blandino (8/5): - 👍
- John (6/5): - I couldnt believe it when I arrived. Total false advertising. Its a real DUMP, but in the pictures it looks like a nice hotel. No cockroaches, but thats about the best I can do to drege up a compliment
- Dream (8/5): - Great humans and hosts
- Rodrigo (8/5): - Convenient location
- Davide (6/5): Average motel. Good for a few nights - Nothing special. The room was ok a bit tired. Coffee maker. Just an average motel . Having a fridge was handy in the summer.
No breakfast, or at least I couldn't find it, but a 7 11 across the road
- Lans M (6/5): Dodgy neighborhood, nice staff - A place that has seen better days, in an area that is less than safe. Staff was very nice and helpful, but did make a point of telling us not to leave anything in our car because robberies are common. The place is old and run down, but management seems to be working hard to spiffy it up.
- Kimberly (4/5): - Sink would not drain
- Wayne (10/5): - Though this is an older property, the rooms have been completely redone within the last 4 years. So the rooms look nice inside. There is a cold breakfast available, which we didn’t expect. The hotel is right next to a bus stop which was convenient for us - bus 52 and some others. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
- DIANE (10/5): - Stayed here several times.
Pleased with staff and room.
- quepace (10/5): A Quick Trip - I stayed here while attending a concert as it was one of the closest to the venue. Staff was helpful and I was able to walk around and explore the city. Near the bus line. A couple good food options near as well. I would stay here again if I ever find myself back in the city.
- Kevin (8/5): - Parking is available but very tight spaces.
Room was very clean given the building’s age and “outdatedness”.
Fair price for the usage. (Sleep and shower).
Will stay again if the price doesn’t change.
- Quyen (6/5): - Walls and ceilings are thin. I heard the kids next door and the people above me. Not their fault-the room is no where near sound proof.
The person at the front was very nice and accommodating.
I had the corner room on the lower floor and there were no closet.
- David (10/5): - This hotel is a very good value for the cost (given its location). It is simple, but well-maintained and the rooms are well-equipped and feel 'fresh'. The area around the hotel is a bit uneven and not a place I would choose to spend any time. It is a 10-15 minute walk from a much more lively area, coffee shops, and BART. Buses just in front of the hotel if walking is unwelcome.
- Max (6/5): - A good spot for a quick visit to the University and want to keep to a budget. Check towels get changed as ours were damp but otherwise what you would expect at a lower rated motel and priced accordingly
- kristaballs (10/5): Good Place to stay - This hotel was very clean, staff are accommodating and is very close to public transit. The Bart is one block away and there is a bus stop right outside that takes you to the downtown core in minites.
- Karen (6/5): Basic Motel Room - Basic no frills motel room. TV did not work. Had frig and microwave which we did not use. Stayed overnight after seeing concert at the Greek Theater. Convenient for that.
- John (8/5): Wyndham sucks; this hotel is decent - I hate Wyndham but we’ve stayed at this Howard Johnson twice and it’s decent. It’s clean and remodeled and has been quiet both times. Parking is very cramped and a little limited, but fine. Nice staff. Rooms and bathrooms are small but fine. Appreciate the fridge and microwave. Overall a decent place to stay for something relatively affordable.
- William (8/5): Stay near Berkeley - Nice clean renovated room. Shower water pressure is a bit low
- Aziz (2/5): - Filthy, unclean unsanitary place needs to be either heavy upkeep or shut, FYI don’t be fooled by photos
- Kimberly (8/5): - Thin walls. Hear everything happening around you. Room was clean and comfortable though. Tv dated. Plenty of sink space. Shower head was tiny with low pressure. When it comes to safety, daytime was fine but night time be wary. Had a scary encounter. Lots of homeless in the area day and night.
- Christian (10/5): - Very friendly staff. Clean. Parking is a little tight but doable. Would definitely stay there again.
- Robert (6/5): - Nice hotel. Manager and staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Rooms are very clean and have been newly remodeled, but are small, and awkwardly shaped. Floors have no carpet, but use vinyl planking flooring instead, which was new and clean but makes the room hard and cold. Furnishing are not the highest quality but are fsirly new and in good condition. Would stay again if the price isn’t too high.
- Adrienne (8/5): - Pretty good so far
- Miguel Angel (10/5): - Second time that I stayed in this Hotel. It was very comfortable, but this time the bathroom was very stinky.
Other than this, the place was perfect.
- Chuhan (10/5): - Good value for money
- Keshav (10/5): - The person at the reception was super useful and efficient. Many thanks!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very convenient to have the sink in an area outside of the toilet and shower when traveling with others. Some areas were a bit dusty, but otherwise, we had a very nice stay during our trip.
- Kenneth (8/5): Economical, clean and comfortable - good location - I was passing-thru and needed an economical and safe place to crash for the night. The HJ Berkeley was a fine choice. Location was good - walking distance to a few good eateries. The property was well kept and secure. Parking is tight, but the hotel wasn't full on the night I stayed so it wasn't a problem. My room was small but well appointed and clean. No issues with functionality - everything worked well. Bed was comfortable. My only negative issue during the stay was noise - I was placed in-between a couple of rooms with small kids (adjacent and above). It was a bit annoying hearing all the yelling/crying/shouting and heavy footsteps in the room above. I think a room on the second floor might be a better option. Overall, the property fit the bill - I would recommend if you're looking for a more economical option in Berkeley...
- Leonard (8/5): - Parking was a little tight but to be expected given the area.
- Melissa (10/5): - Stayed for 2 days and it was nice little place to lay my head at night.
- Renate (10/5): - Quiet and conveniently located, nice clean shower
- Robin (4/5): - 3 light fixtures in the room had only 1 bulb in them (sink, shower, bedroom). A 3” blob (black tar?) was on the floor. The coat rack didn’t have any hangers in it, I had to chase down the manager.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Was very quiet, considering it was on busy University Ave.
Very clean
- Diego (6/5): - roaches
- Muhammad (10/5): - Great
- Junji (8/5): - Good area for dining
- Dominique (8/5): - This stay was great, we stayed for about 4 nights and it was all great. Staff is great, parking is small but it isn’t too terrible, if you have a truck or bigger then it might be an issue. It’s about a 15 minute walk from downtown which is nice!
- Robbie (10/5): - Gteat staff very helpful, convenient to food and roads
- Brittany (6/5): - The walls were thin, I could hear many of the other people staying in the motel. It is not a hotel - rooms open to the parking lot.
- Filippo (6/5): - Staff does not replace coffee and you need to go and ask for it at the reception every day. Very bad acoustic insulation from both outside and adjacent rooms. Very noisy and old style cooler/heater. On the good side, the property is clean and recently remodeled.
- Anil (8/5): - Overall, good to excellent
- Donna (10/5): - The hotel was clean, quiet and safe. I would stay here again.
- Victormichael (8/5): - Quiet. Clean room. Safe parking.
- LES (10/5): Satisfied Customer. - Booked two rooms for three days each for a business trip. After the first day we removed the third day stay and was told no problem, just let them know when we check out. We checked out very early and called in about 9 AM to advise we were out as notified. They had cancelled the room for the third day, and we received a refund in a few days. Close to restaurants.
- Jeffery (10/5): - Quite and clean friendly
- Jinny (6/5): - I like clean towels provided
- Tashon (6/5): - The room was filthy. The pictures online do not match the reality of this motel.
- Ron (6/5): - There was no place to hang clothing in the room. We had to use the ironing board as a table. The parking lot was too crowded, and the spaces that were available were very tight.
- Joselynne (6/5): - Quick and easy check in. The person working the counter was kind. Definitely not a place I would choose for myself but my employer booked this for me. There’s mold growing on the ceiling of the bathroom and between the tiles (on the grout) in the shower. The toilet paper roll is broken and tp fell right off when I had to use it. I personally don’t feel particularly safe in motels like this but I guess if you’re in a bind it works.
- Dushani (8/5): - Good experience. Clean spacious room with 3 double beds .
- Lori (4/5): - Everything was pretty dirty. Especially the shower. Bedding had burn holes. Very loud metal stairs near our room kept us up. Could hear the neighbors even though they were not being loud
- Evette (10/5): one night stay surprise visiting daughter Berkeley - We visited our daughter a student at Cal on Dec 19th as a birthday surprise. Front desk Sam is very nice, parking is super safe and plenty, super close to our daughter's apartment; perfect for sleeping; bed is very comfortable, though short; room is very simple, could have a few more items; room on 2nd floor is reasonably quiet. Highly recommend this motel.
- BRENDA (6/5): - I booked here for my son’s graduation because I knew eating out was going to cost an arm and a leg. We had stayed here a few years ago the first time we came up to tour the campus so I knew the rooms were no frills but clean and the office staff were very nice and accommodating. Unfortunately they have a very small parking lot and our car was hit while another guest was trying to turn around. Luckily because it’s small and we were in our hotel we heard the crunch and we were able to get their DL, insurance and phone number. Next time I’ll pay the extra $25 for parking at the Hyatt Place in Emeryville and just stay there. If you wait to book your room the day of it’s about $50 cheaper than booking ahead of time.
- ricardo (10/5): - Nice staff. Clean room
- csalem963824 (10/5): Great inexpensive motel - If you're looking for an inexpensive motel in Berkeley, this is it! The manager was great. The room had everything I needed. It is close to University of California Berkeley and the Graduate Theological Union, which was where I needed to go. The only drawback, and this isn't the fault of the motel, is that the area doesn't seem very safe. I heard sirens each of the two evenings I was there.
- YAN (2/5): - Skin protection issues
- Miguel (4/5): - Room was clean thats the only good thing. Remote Barely worked, shower didn't work drain plung in shower was broken, and you can hear everything in your Neighbor room
- Verified traveler (6/5): Overall, a decent place - The gentleman at the desk was very nice and accomodating. Parking was interesting. The bed was a little uncomfortable and the pillows appeard a little dirty. The tile shower, (not a pre-fab plastic drop in system, was nice and large. I ended up not staying the night as I had to get back home quickly.
- Jinny (10/5): - The room is pretty spacious.
- Yoana (10/5): - Everything was what I expected updated rooms amazing light fictures. Clean and great service.
- Jan (8/5): Decent motel, clean and comfotable. - Simple motel, clean. The room was not very bog but bed was comfortable.
The desk was super tiny and super wobbly. I also didn't get a cup for the coffee.
Overall, pretty decent especially for the price.
- Nanci (10/5): - No screen on the window. I wanted to open the window but did not feel comfortable without a screen
- jody (10/5): Great place to stay! - This HJ was clean, comfortable and quiet. Staff was exceptional and we would definitely stay here again!
- Dennis (10/5): - Felt like I was back in the 60's. Clean and comfortable!
- Lauren (2/5): - Rude employees.
- Chris (8/5): - Good location and friendly, helpful staff. My only complaint was the weak water pressure in the shower, but that may be due to mandated low-flow shower heads.
- Sarah (8/5): - Helpful friendly staff. Clean and nice place to stay.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Newly remodeled and clean - The hotel is old but newly remodeled and they did a nice job. It was clean and comfortable. Nice staff. We felt safe. The parking spots are very small and there is road noise. Will stay there again.
