Guest Reviews
- 633ronjas (10/5): Lovely stay in Hotel Silberstein - We enjoyed our stay in this lovely Boutique Hotel in a colonial style. Our rooms are very very comfortable and the staff was so friendly and welcoming. After a welcome drink we got all information about trip around Quito (sooo much to do) and how we get to the bus and ordering a taxi.
You need to try the empanadas by Francisco next door. Delicious!
Additional there are so many restaurants around this area so you can get there by feet. Enjoy!
- RussS777 (10/5): Quaint boutique hotel - An unbelievable pleasant hotel and staff. Went out of the way to be sure we were comfortable and pleased. The building is very well maintained and clean. Breakfast in the top floor solarium was a real treat. Food was good and chef prepares to your order.
- Devaflam (10/5): Historic comfortable hotel - We stayed one night between leaving Galapagos and going to the cloud forest near Mindo. It was a very memorable stay. The hotel is a really interesting old house with furniture and art of the period - yet a modern bathroom with wonderful shower and large bedroom with a very comfortable bed. We were very close to a square with a variety of places to eat. The staff are friendly and helpful, and because we had to leave early, without us having to ask, they made us a packed breakfast. There is a beautiful flowering plant in the front garden by the porch. Really nice traditional hotel
- stefanbauwens (8/5): nice place - We stayed here twice (at the beginning and at the end of our roundtrip trough ecuador) and it felt like coming home. Good location near Mariscal. Nice boutique-hotel. Very friendly and helpfull staff. Breakfast was extraordinary with lots of variation .... Our favourite!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Charming hotel in La Mariscal - Cute room in a converted turn-of-the-century home. The owner is sweet and staff are on hand to make breakfast for you between 6:30 and 9:00 am (you just need to tell them when you will be awake). We were able to arrange for transport to and from the hotel. Nice decorative touches throughout the home and a lovely garden.
Small downsides: 1. The room we were in had stains on the carpet and mildew in the shower -- both things that can be fixed, and weren't overwhelming negative factors. 2. I was asked multiple times to settle the bill -- upon arrival, the morning after arrival, the afternoon after arrival, the morning of departure. Each time I asked if now or later would be fine, and was told "whenever is fine!" but then asked again. It would be more reasonable to either request payment upfront (at the time of reservation) or else at the time of departure -- or else let guests making reservations know that payment is due at check-in. I settled the bill twice because of additional transport costs incurred, once in cash because the credit card machine was nonfunctional.
Overall, a nice restful stay in the middle of a busy, active part of Quito. The hot water bottles at bedtime were a nice touch!
- Edbongo (10/5): Home away from home - My family recently spent several nights on two different occasions at the City Art Hotel in Quito. It is such a comfortable and beautiful oasis inside a bustling city. Dora’s gracious hospitality made it feel as if we were visiting with family. The rooms are spacious and have extra little touches that make it special. Breakfasts include made to order eggs, homemade sweet cakes, ripe fruit and more. Restaurants are within walking distance at the Plaza Foch as well as a great shopping market where bought lots of items to take home. Dora also made some great recommendations for our trip itinerary that proved to be very helpful. Since it is by a busy area, street noise can be heard on the weekends but all quieted down by 11pm. We had no issues with that. Would definitely return if back in Quito.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great location and friendly staff owner extended stay when flight was delayed at no charge
- dturetsky (10/5): The place to stay in Quito - You can choose to stay in old town or la mariscal (new town) when in Quito
Old town is dead in the evening. This hotel is near the restaurants and the arts district.
When traveling we like to stay in places with a local vibe. The hotel is a beautiful old home with good breakfast on the enclosed roof with great views of the city.
Would definitely recommend.
- thornton321 (10/5): Lovely old world charm - My family and I had a lovely stay with Gabby in Quito. We had a few personal issues with which she was extremely helpful and accommodating. Clean rooms, beautiful breakfast room, gorgeous flowers and very generous and kind owner.
- lanielson1 (10/5): Beautiful Hotel in Quito - We can’t say enough good things about our time here! The accommodations were very comfortable-WiFi was provided, hot water in the showers and very comfortable bed! Breakfast in the morning was delicious and served on the greenhouse rooftop. The only negative is that we weren’t able to spend more time here! Thanks again for taking such great care of us and making us feel so safe!
- alaughingd0g (10/5): Beautiful small hotel - This was our favorite hotel of the four we stayed in while in Ecuador. Our room was beautifully furnished, with antiques and art. The staff was very attentive, making sure we were comfortable, knew where to go to eat, preparing breakfast on our schedule, providing a breakfast-to-go when we had to leave, and best of all, a water bottle to warm our feet at night. Just a really lovely place to stay!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Amazing decor and comfortable beds! The owner is very nice and meticulous about all the details in the rooms - I would definitely recommend this hotel!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - the entire property is unique. It is filled with art and each room is beautiful. Gabrielle, the owner, provides a wonderful breakfast every day. Her staff could not be more attentive or helpful
- brucehunterm (10/5): Excellent boutique hotel in Quito Ecuador - City Arts Hotel is a beautifully appointed and excellently located small hotel that caters to its guests. Furnished with Victorian style antiques, fresh flowers and comfortable canopy beds,(including a special touch of a hot water bottle) it is a great place to stay in the Marsasal area of Quito. Our party of five was warmly welcomed by owner Gabby and staff member Andrea who provided lots of advice on restaurants and places to go. Gabby also arranged a special surprise birthday celebration which was greatly appreciated. The breakfast was also awesome . This was our second time at this very comfy hotel and will not be the last !
- Sharon (8/5): - City Art Hotel is within a 15 min. walk to the craft market and park, and right in the heart of the hip restaurants, although it is on a quiet street. The owner made us feel very welcome, organizing a charming birthday pudding and helping us get a ride to the airport. The rooms are elegant and the beds are very comfortable. Although there is no elevator, the staff are very helpful. The breakfast, in an atrium overlooking the neighborhood, was beautifully laid out and delicious.
- Steven (8/5): - Fabulous staff. Very charming. Nice location. Excellent breakfast.
- Chillor1291 (10/5): Nice Hotel - Very nice place, cosy rooms in a colonial style. Excellent breakfast, friendly staff.
Very central location for party in the evening, depending on your room: Saturday night might be noisy...
Overall a very good experience
- ammarhashim (10/5): Mr - Such a beautiful place. Makes you feel like home. Very nice beds and showers. In the middle of the shipping and night life and Restaurants area. We loved it. My wife and children are very happy. The hotel is decorated in very beautiful classic way.
- newsformaggie (8/5): Charming, lovely stay but not ideal for light sleepers (close to La Plaza Foche) - This is a charming hotel just a couple of blocks off of La Plaza Foche. Each room is charming and unique. We had two double beds in ours (Room #5) on the second floor and a large bathroom with a walk-in shower. The staff is very friendly and helpful, eager to ensure that your stay is enjoyable. We loved the wonderful surprise of having a warm water pillow tucked into the foot of our beds at night! What a treat! (I need to buy one!) We slept with the windows open (July) but the trade off for the nice, cool breeze was considerable noise from the busy streets below. Bring earplugs if you're a light sleeper.
Wilson, the street the hotel is on, is pretty quiet for the rest of the neighborhood. I was surprised, however, when multiple people told us to take a taxi, even for short distances. I never felt unsafe and the streets around us were very often bustling with people.
Breakfast on the third floor terrace is lovely. You can have a fresh egg omelette made to your liking or take advantage of cold cuts, cheeses, fruits, breads and jams, cereal and yogurt with granola. Do not miss trying whatever fresh juice is available!! One was better than the next!
If you are looking for an independently-owned boutique hotel, instead of a chain, check this out. Loved our stay in this quaint B&B-type place.
- katherineh111 (10/5): I felt lavished - I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Quito. The staff was so welcoming and accommodating, the guest room I was in was cozy and I had a very comfortable sleep there for 2 nights. Breakfast was such a treat in the bright sunny Terrace Room and having the Chef right their preparing omelettes was just stellar!
- BrendaT741 (4/5): Pleasant Staff but Unpleasant Hotel Stay - Don't stay at this hotel. While the staff tries hard, they have little to work with. Our room was tiny and very cold. The hotel has no heat and while a hot water bottle feels great in bed, it provides no heat for the room. We had steaming hot water from the sink tap, but barely tepid water in the shower. We stayed 5 or 6 days there and had one warm shower. All the others were cold.
The area is not safe and we were repeatedly warned by the hotel staff not to stay out after dark. We actually watched a drug deal taking place on the next corner. No matter the time of day, to get in and out of the hotel, someone needs to unlock the door for you. Once inside the courtyard, you are safe, especially because above the 8-foot wrought-iron gates, there are electrified wires to prevent someone from climbing over!
Within a few blocks, there are modern, safe hotels to stay. Choose elsewhere!
- buddmar (6/5): Mixed bag: charming decor but uncomfortable stay - I really wanted to love this hotel partly because of the silly reason that the hotel's name is "Silberstein" and my family name is "Silber." Furthermore my own home in Philadelphia is amazingly similar in age and layout as this "boutique" hotel - a late 19th Century Victorian. First the positives: the public rooms are charming ... filled with antiques and reproductions and there are fresh flowers which give these rooms an ambience of elegance. The breakfast buffet on the third floor terrace was excellent. Overall the place was mostly clean - except for the dusty crystal chandeliers (I know that cleaning chandeliers is a tedious job but I do it in my house so they sparkle.) and had the potential of being a really nice stay.
Now the bad news: my room was absolutely tiny - not more than 7 feet wide. It had a single "twin" bed (no full, queen, or king bed could fit in such a tiny space.) Jorge, the charming former manager who was fluent in English showed me a much nicer larger room 3 weeks before I made my reservation, but when I returned to Quito Jorge was no longer there and replaced by a young girl who spoke only halting English, but we managed to communicate with my halting Spanish. I was put in the small room. It was like a bait and switch. After my first night the toilet broke. Okay, I'm a homeowner and things like that happen. It was not a comfortable stay because the room was FREEZING cold. Now I stayed at other small hotels during my month long trip to Ecuador and usually they have some sort of heat or provide a small portable heater. Instead, there was one of those rubber hot water bottles in my bed! I haven't seen one of those in 50 years! There was no kind of view from the window which is not worthy of mention ... BUT ... the window had permanent unmovable iron bars over them! In most countries this would be legally a major safety violation! Can you imagine if there was a fire and I had to escape??!!! On the second day of my stay I returned to my room at 2 PM after a few hours of sightseeing and the room was still not made up, even though I careful put the PLEASE MAKE UP ROOM sign on the door knob. I am sad. There were so many reasons I wanted to love this place. I suggest the owner visit the Hotel Victoria in Cuenca or the Casa 1881 in Riobamba to learn how a historic "boutique" hotel should be managed.
- RainaLinn (10/5): Gorgeous boutique hotel with AMAZING manager - My husband and I spent 2 nights at this charming boutique hotel before heading out to the Galapagos Islands. This mansion turned hotel is quite lovely. The antique decor with a nod to Germany (I think the owners are German?) is gorgeous. The rooms are grandly decorated and have everything you need. It's a nice touch that when they turn down the bed for you at night they place warmed water bottles in the bed so your feet are toasty! But by far the hotel's greatest asset is the manager Jorge, he went above and beyond to make sure our short stay was amazing. He gave us great recommendations on what do with ourselves since we only had one full day to explore Quito. He not only gave us a great recommendation for a dinner restaurant, he actually walked us to the restaurant personally after calling to make us a reservation! I would definitely recommend this hotel.
- sue (6/5): Nice, clean, - Excellent breakfast. Friendly staff. Clean. But if you are always cold like me, the hotel doesn't have heat. Quito nights are cold. I moved to another hotel.
- rup0na (10/5): A lovely charming hotell! - Super nice hotel to stay at! The hotel has a great colonial feel to it, the decor and ambience are the highlight of this hotel. Rooms were clean and well decorated.
The staff were very nice and helpful. Breakfast was good too. Great location as well.
Well recommended.
- Ken (10/5): Perfect location . Great manager. - Surrounded by bars and restaurants. Manager was very helpful and accommodating.
- 867carolec (8/5): Little boutique hotel - This old fashioned mansion is really charming with the helpful Jorge who is a really gentleman. The breakfast is really good with typical jams.
Some bedrooms are very large and the living is a nice place to stay and use the HIFI.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great area and very nice hotel. Friendlt staff were very helpful in arranging rides to and from Airport. Area, unlike many parts of Quito, is safe to walk to restaurants and bars. However, it was a little loud at night because of proximity to nightlife. We felt so cozy in our comfortable room though, especially with the hot water bottles they brought us to put into bed with us. Would recommend!
- Phillip (8/5): - Great place, great location and helpful friendly staff. My only caveat is, if you are traveling in March, it can get cold (we were) and there are no western style heating/heaters in the rooms. They did give us a small area heater, but the room was cold. I know this is a Quito issue in March. It actually reminded me of Jerusalem in the winter (for anyone who knows this). I would stay here again though
- David (4/5): Not worth the money they charge. - Hotel is in good location, but room was cramped, no refrigerator in room, water never got hot for shower, bed was mediocre. Had to wait for 5 minutes at times to be let in and out of security gate. Under staffed as the same person operating security gate also was house cleaning and could not hear buzzer for gate while he was vacuuming on 2nd and 3rd floors. Needs to improve on these issues.
- Tom (10/5): Perfect boutique - Huge room at the top floor, great bathroom, quiet and very comfortable. The breakfast is great. And the staff simply perfect, always helping with every need. Fully recommended
- jose (10/5): I love this hotel! - This hotel deserves the top rating in all aspects. Service was astounding, too!
- Megan (10/5): Boutique hotel in Quito - This hotel has the feel of an elegant vintage home. Our room was large and comfortable with a canopy bed, high ceilings, sitting area and good sized bathroom. The staff was friendly and helpful. The location is in the Mariscal area which is busy with nightlife - though the hotel is like a quiet oasis. The rest of the city of Quito is accessible by foot or cheap cab ride. I'd highly recommend this hotel.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Elegant hotel from yester years - Staff were exceptionally attentive and helpful. Gracious, stately old hotel with lots of charm.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice hotel in a bustling area of Quito - Don't expect the services of a five star hotel. This is a really comfy and nice looking boutique hotel.
- Paul (10/5): Nice Hotel In Fun Mariscal Neighborhood - Was not familiar with this location, and am very glad that I chose it. The big house has a dining area on the top floor with mountain views and some roof top city views. Very pleasant and even easier proximity to everything with inexpensive taxi service -- but, walking area is great!
- John (10/5): Beautiful hotel in a great location. - A very nicely restored old home in the heart Mariscal. A beautiful room with the turn down service that included a hot water bottle to take the chill out of the bed. The staff was very helpful and knew the areas local flavors and markets. They were, although, less familiar with the areas higher end resterurants, but went out of their way to get us to them.
Highly recommend the hotel as it is in Mariscal as well as an easy taxi ride to the center of the Old Town.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great B and B in New town - The owners could not have been nicer and the hotel is first class in every way.
- blake n (10/5): - Different kind of accomadation - 10 room refurbished Mansion in good location to restaurants and entertainment.
