Guest Reviews
- robmV8969LH (8/5): Good, but not as good as other times! - This is our seventh time at Turtle Bay Beach Club, and probably the first time we have reviewed under five stars. Three stars might be a bit harsh, as I think a lot of the frustrations were unique to us having been there so much.
The positives first. The location is amazing, right on the beach which is great for looking around rock pools or snorkelling off the beach. We also ventured out to some of the other hotels (try the cocktails at Medina Palms) which can all be accessed from the beach and are a short tuk tuk ride in the evenings (or short walk if you’re feeling adventurous).
The staff are amazing as always, although there were fewer of the old staff that we know and love than there has been on other occasions. This is probably because we arrived shortly after the Easter weekend and they were starting to wind down.
The grounds of the hotel are amazingly well kept. A personal favourite of mine is just sitting with a coffee at the weavers bar watching the weaver birds. The rooms are ok, nothing amazing, but you hardly spend any time there so it never bothers us. Housekeeping do an amazing job keeping the rooms clean and stocked with fresh clean towels.
The big downside for us was the food and drink. On our first visit (back in 2011) I remember being very impressed with the food and drink. As the years have gone on, we have found ourselves getting more and more bored with the food, specifically in the evenings. Breakfast is great, lunch is ok, and 4pm pancakes are always amazing (thanks Josef 😀). By the evening we found ourselves uninspired by what was on offer. It’s difficult to pinpoint why, exactly, but figure it is because we have been there so much. In fact, I am going to change my rating to four stars, as it is much fairer haha. It’s also worth mentioning that every time we come to Watamu, we get a bit more adventurous. So this time we ventured out to more places in the evening (Ocean Sports, Hemingways, Lichthaus, Crab Shack, and Ascot all recommended). One night we even got picky bits (bread, cold meats, cheese and choc) from the Blue Marmalade restaurant and took it back to our room to eat (with a pot of butter kindly sourced by Kadengi, thanks Kadengi 😀).
The only other point of contention was the beer! I do t know if this has got worse because of cost cutting, but the beer available on the all inclusive is (in my opinion) terrible. When we first came you used to have Tusker on tap. Last time we came we found the beer from the tap was always flat and not cold, which we got around by ordering Baloo’s which was servers from bottles. This year there were no bottled beers included in all inclusive, and it seemed like a mission to find a cold fizzy beer. These days I drink so little that I just found myself ordering bottled Tusker (550 KSH) as it was more important to get a decent pint!

- Rodney (4/5): The stay was disappointing overall. Food was average at best and the hotel felt old. The staff we great though and respo - The location was excellent with access to a swimable beach. Aged decor, our room didn’t have wifi access, no direct sitting view of the beach and sea.
- Bev (8/5): Serene- ocean view was worth it - Cleanliness and the food was too yummy! The staff are friendly, especially Eunice, Elijah. Chef Isaac’s meals were so yummy and diverse. You can't lack something to love. Cleanliness of some of the water dispensers and some staff seem clueless to help. But most are very helpful.

- D8088FDsusanm (10/5): Holiday Heaven - Location is fabulous. Rooms are great. Really good value. The rooms were cleaned everyday. Fresh towels on request. Sheets were changed every day (which was perhaps a excessive!) The atmosphere was lovely. Staff were always friendly and helpful. I hope we'll be back!
- Ian (8/5): -
- janiffer (5/5): Fair - Food, but there were no varieties of vegetables Bed and bedding very holible, especially mattress protector, shower very old style i did not like at all, tiles were coming out, shower gel unable to press, made like that so they save on the cost, toilet very smelly not flushing properly. Building very old not updated to classic or Morden one, staff not educated to standard of hospitality some staff will just pass you will not ask you if you need a drink..
- Emma (9/5): - everything was superb..especially if you re a outdoor person for water sport
excellent
- agnetta (7/5): - African cuisine. Staff were passive. Some felt we did not belong "kweli wako pesa?" Someone loosely wondered when we asked to be allocated a room after paying.
- Ferrie (7/5): Great place for a low key holiday - I loved the room on the beach! The air-conditioning and fan worked a treat and the bed was comfortable.
I always like that no one gets harassed on the beach as there is a cooperative, dressed in the same uniform. That means you only talk to one person and then the others leave you alone. I was disappointed that Kenyan Cane was no longer on the all inclusive, being a local drink and one we really like, that surprised us.
- Galin (8/5): - Overall, our stay at Turtle Bay Beach Resort in Watamu, Kenya was pleasant, with some clear highlights and one notable downside.
The biggest drawback is definitely the rooms — they feel quite outdated and are in need of renovation. The furnishings and overall condition do not match the standard of the rest of the hotel.
On the positive side, the food is excellent. The cuisine is varied, fresh, and truly enjoyable throughout the stay. The staff also deserve special mention — always smiling, welcoming, and very helpful, which makes a big difference in the overall experience.
The common areas are extremely well maintained, and you can see the care put into keeping the surroundings beautiful. The pools are fantastic — clean, spacious, and perfect for relaxing.
In general, the hotel is good and offers a nice experience, especially thanks to the service, food, and facilities. However, upgrading the rooms would significantly improve the overall quality of the stay. The room

- Daydream07501548372 (6/5): Disappointing - Last stayed in 2012. Came this year as it was our golden wedding anniversary. Accommodation was nothing special, rooms needing alot of attention, beds clean, room cleaners very efficient. Alot of things in the rooms have not changed in 20 years. Food was ok but not like it used to be. Staff a lot of trainees some were very good, some not so good some over zealous, thank goodness for the old brigade of staff who carried it. Dress code especially for dinner is non existent. Decoration needs attention as every bit of wooden furniture has been given a white undercoat distressed look which looks terrible. On the other hand pool's were very clean, security very good but work needs to be done on entertainment. We turned up with a preconceived idea that it would be the same as before but sadly mistaken.
- Ghislaine (8/5): - The place is being The food was nice with the exception of the fruits. It’s a shame because fruits in Kenya are delicious, pineapple, mango, papaya. They should choose riper fruit.
- Prof sameer (10/5): Fantastic - Excellent hotel situated right on the beach. The all inclusive meals and drinks was amazing Not applicable
- Khangai (7/5): Perfect for kids! Lots to do - Ambience Food options

- abuale (8/5): 4 days in Watamu - The resort is overall a good property with plenty of potential. While the rooms would benefit from a bit of a refresh — especially the bathrooms — they are still comfortable and equipped with everything you need to enjoy rest, relaxation, and the natural beauty of Watamu.
The beach, with its sunbeds and stunning white sand, is truly beautiful. The changing tides create breathtaking landscapes and offer the chance to spot fascinating marine life right along the shore.
The staff are kind, helpful, and always ready to accommodate guests’ needs. The food selection is varied, but with average quality. One point that could be improved is the clarity around what is included in the dining offer: although the full offering is announced at check‑in, availability throughout the stay isn’t always completely clear.
The large, well-maintained pool (the one open to all guests) is nice and adds to the resort’s relaxing atmosphere.
All in all, we had a pleasant stay and would recommend this resort for those looking to enjoy Watamu’s charm, its beaches, and its unique natural setting. There are anyway points of improvement.
- LHG007KingaK (10/5): Seaside hotel - very good memories - I had wonderful 8 days at Turtle Bay.
Pleasant garden and ocean combo hotel, delicious food, very kind staff. I spent Christmas days there so there were always something extra for dinner.
There are also very good possibilities to make excursions nearby, like birdwatch, Gede Ruins, mangrove forest, etc.
They have lots of water sport possibilities as well, including scuba diving.
Thank you for all your help during our stay.

- elbO5856WB (10/5): A 5* experience - My partner and I have just returned from an exceptional ten-day stay at Turtle Bay Beach Club. We travelled from the UK in early December, which turned out to be an ideal time to visit: warm temperatures, clear blue skies, and a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere that allowed us to fully enjoy the resort before the Christmas rush.
I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. The grounds are beautifully maintained and set directly on the beach, with a tranquil adults-only pool thoughtfully located away from the main family pool. The resort is immaculately kept and, in our experience, looks even better in person than in the online photographs. Our room was spacious, clean, and featured a balcony overlooking the lush central gardens and lawns, which was a pleasure to wake up to each morning.
We opted for the all-inclusive package and were incredibly impressed by the quality and variety of the food. During our ten day stay, the buffet menu was rarely repeated, with an excellent selection of fresh meat, fish, fruit, and vegetables — much of it prepared to order. Remarkably, it’s one of the few holidays we’ve returned from feeling healthier thanks to the food! A particular highlight was the Weaver Bar, where you can enjoy an evening drink while watching the golden weaver birds nesting nearby — a truly memorable and unique experience.
Evening entertainment ranged from live music and dancing to a DJ later in the evening. The excursions and watersports team were also extremely helpful in organising activities; we would highly recommend taking a local boat trip to see dolphins just outside of the reef.
Above all, what truly sets Turtle Bay Beach Club apart is the staff. Every member of the team was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, clearly taking great pride in ensuring guests have a relaxing and enjoyable stay. Their hard work and hospitality made our experience truly outstanding.
- Vooijs (8/5): - Adult pool was fab
- Martin (10/5): - I think either the beds need cleaning or spraying with some sort of bug spray or mosquito repellent as I was bitten nearly every night halfway through my stay but this just a minor issue.
- Helmut (7/5): -
- Rebecca (7/5): - Very nice Staff, great value for Money and Good Food. Access to the beach is not so nice, facilites are ran down and Coffee was not
- Magdalene (9/5): Relaxing and refreshing - I love the two swimming pools. One exclusively for adults and quiet time. The menu was also broad to cater for different taste buds The beach was full of black seaweeds making it hard to walk on it and enjoy it
- Bobo_lynn79 (10/5): Awesomeness by the awesome staff - I owe my vacation to the staff... Wesley, the manager, you have awesome collegues... Janet, you are a queen. The staff are awesome. My daughter will never forget the surprise birthday surprise..oh and Pastor, you know yourself, you are awesome... Hotel facilities, oh well, a little bit of concern.. Worn out pool towels, selective bathroom amenities... I owe my trip to the staff.. Awesome people...
- johnwX3884EF (10/5): The best place to stay in Watamu - Arrived early September, staying until December. Here we are again for another extended stay with all our much loved friends in Turtle Bay Beach Club. Many of the staff here have been our friends for more than 20 years and we hope to be so for many more years, they are just wonderful people who give everything to make sure your stay is a great experience. This is one box you musr tick and I guaeantee you will not regret it.
- Ursula (10/5): - Nice comfortable room with balcony. Balcony with 2 comfy chairs and table and clothes line, good thought! Clean bathroom.
Good mattress on bed. Sizable desk, good wardrobe space, safe. Great view. It was all good.
- Simon (10/5): - All inclusive, but share what that means to vacationers. Just because on the beach someone is wearya Turtle Bay T shirt, doesn't mean they work for the Hotel.
- Giulia (8/5): - Nice property even if it is a little bit outdated. Special mention for the staff and hair salon.
- bnallo (8/5): Awesome place - The staff are very friendly and helpful all the time. The premise is very clean and well kept with nice and tasty meals.
- Hayden (10/5): - This resort is unique in the combination of guests it hosts:: I love that even during Kenya's high international tourism season there are always lots of Kenyan families at Turtle Bay. The price is reasonable, and keeps the beauty of the Kenya coast available to the people it belongs to while also showing it off hospitably and beautifully to the world.
- Hilda (5/5): A beautiful location but limited amenities, poor food and beverage options, and lack of attention. - Food Options
On Day 1, the menu offered only lamb skewers and meatballs, with no alternative options such as fish or vegetarian dishes. Considering the hotel’s beautiful location by the ocean, incorporating fresh seafood and more varied choices would greatly enrich the dining experience.
Beverage Selection
The drinks menu was limited to only one bottle of red dry wine, which was of low quality. For a hotel of this class, a wider selection of quality wines and other beverages would be expected and appreciated.
Mattress Comfort
The mattress provided was extremely hard and uncomfortable, which affected sleep quality. Upgrading to more comfortable bedding would greatly improve guest rest and satisfaction.
Bathroom Amenities
Basic amenities such as slippers, toothbrush, and toothpaste were not provided. Including these items would align with the service standards expected from a hotel of your category.
Beach Maintenance
The beach area appeared unattended and unclean. Regular maintenance and cleaning would help showcase the hotel’s prime location and provide guests with a more enjoyable beach experience.
- peterdR8329TG (10/5): The best experience in my life - This is a wonderful hotel. Number one: the personnel is absolutely top! Ever so friendly and helpful. One of the waiters, Hamisi, made everyone laugh with saying all the time: "this is the best food in the world", "you are the best friend in the world", etc.The location is fantastic, right next to the ocean, and the higher floors even have a view on the ocean. We had an all inclusive package, which is really relaxed: no thinking about spending when getting mainstream drinks throughout the day, including beer or wine. Beds are great, rooms are clean. We even saw some maintenance (roofing, painting) going on, so the resort seems to be well maintained. Reviews here about this hotel are generally very positive, and I was surprised to see a few very negative ones. But if you read the reasons, like finding a dudu in the room (ants are unavoidable in such resorts), or an airco failing to function (could it be one forgot to put the door-key in the slot for the airco to make it work?), such reviews should not stop you from booking here. The only 2 shortcomings I have experienced are the strength of the WIFI signal, which is OK outside of the rooms, but tends to drop once inside, and the fact that one person in my family had special dietary needs, which needed to be repeated every day, and were partly not complied with: for example, this person can not have any spices or herbs, only salt, but several times the meat offered seemed to have been marinated, so included herbs and spices. I guess it is a matter of misunderstanding of what is included under "spices and herbs". But otherwise it was a great experience, and I would certainly come here again!
- Hans Jürg (6/5): - Die Zimmer haben eine Renovation nötig
Das Essen war bloss mittelmässig
Freundliches Personal!!
- Sophia (1/5): Certainly. Here’s a more diplomatic and concise version: ⸻ There’s a need for staff training in cultural sensitivity, - I liked that it was at the beach front While the staff made a genuine effort to assist, the overall experience fell short of expectations. The hotel feels quite dated, with aging facilities and malfunctioning features such as the sliding beach doors. The food options were limited, lacking variety—especially for those seeking healthy or protein-rich meals. Cleanliness upon arrival was disappointing, with overlooked details like residual oil and hair in the bathroom. At a rate of $350 per night, the value simply does not align with the experience. For a more reliable and comfortable stay, I would recommend considering Sarova instead.
- Heidi (10/5): Exceptional -
- Lynn (9/5): Great resort, will definitely be back. - Great facilities and great food. The staff are exceptional and keen to help.
The environment is calm and serene. WIFI not so good in the room
- Jess (7/5): Good -
- Sandeep (1/5): Bad -
- Gerald (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kamlesh (3/5): In General, Sub Standard, No Quality, Horrible Experience. - The property is right on the beach front, which is quite good. Too many issues with the Overall Quality and Standard of the property. This place is either run down or mismanaged. Rooms have done their fair share of time. The Meals are more or less for a 2 Star Hotel; Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, the choices are few to non, salads were horrible (rotten in one instance). For Vegetarians this would be a living nightmare. Most of the Staff were on Work Experience (Trainees), without proper Supervision, including the chefs who are not that Competent in Culinary Skills. Extreme Loud Music till 12am, not conducive for families with young children or older people. Not recommended for people who have disabilities.
- Rajesh (8/5): Very good - Excellent location, well mannered staff, good food. location.
- Mohamed (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ellen (8/5): Family-friendly relaxing resort - Turtle Bay Beach Club is a great place for families, especially if you have kids aged under 12. The huge pool is gorgeous and being right next to the beach, it means there's often a refreshing breeze. The shady trees are perfect for keeping cool while watching the older children play in the pool. And the buffet makes it easy to feed the kids! The beach is gorgeous, but plastic waste washes ashore every day. Although some effort is being made to collect the plastic, I feel that this resort could be doing more, especially as it is an eco-responsible resort.
It would be great if this resort got together with other hotels and resorts on the coast and made an effort to stop plastic from getting into the local rivers and into the sea in the first place. Preventing trash from entering the rivers and ocean would not only keep the beaches clean, it would save the lives of a lot of fish and birds, which inadvertently eat the plastic.
Since tourism depends on clean beaches, it would be a worthwhile investment by the tourism industry to help local people living in coastal areas to dispose of their trash in landfills (or establish waste-to-energy power plants, like in Ethiopia), instead of throwing trash in the rivers and sea.
- Liz (7/5): Good -
- Maire (8/5): Very good - The pools are beautiful. The drinks and food menu is diverse. The rooms are clean and comfortable with functioning AC and a ceiling fan.
The front desk was very accommodating with a late check out. Many of the dining staff were inexperienced. A large majority were on work experience and this meant there was variance in the service offered.
The WiFi does not reach the rooms. Despite asking for it to be checked numerous times, the reception did not report back on the issue.
- countlessdestination (4/5): Rooms need upgrading - Overall a good stay but feel extremely let down by the change in policy on watersports. At the time of booking, the Turtle Bay website clearly stated all watersports are included - this had actually changed but the website not updated so we were led to believe that we would get something we didn't. It was the main factor we chose this resort and when raised at reception, they offered to discuss with our agent who made the booking but refused to help us directly. Unfortunately the agent was useless which is another separate issue.
Hotel itself is well located on the beach, amazing views and lots of beach beds. Absolutely no pestering from beach boys which was a dream compared to resorts in Mombasa! We did book a boat tour with the local beach boys and they were excellent - tour met all expectations. Staff are all wonderful and trying their best. Food was sometimes slow to come from snack bar but not the fault of serving staff. Meals themselves were fine for a short stay but would have been fed up if staying a week.
Rooms are spacious but bathrooms truly terrible and in desperate need of an upgrade. We had two rooms but could only use shower in one as other would not allow temperature control - went from burning hot to cold. Baths looked dirty due to age and ingrained marks so we did not even consider using.
Went for massages and the salon only take cash payment - any other hotel allows it to be added to the bill. Also to note the salon and watersports provider literally chase you round the hotel for payment even though we were staying for several more days and would not be able to leave without paying. The majority of guests will not carry money around with them all day. By comparison, the beach boys we booked a tour with (who have no idea when we are leaving or telling the truth) were happy for us to pay them at our convenience for a much much bigger sum of money.
Overall we had a nice time but would not return due to issues above.
- Brigitte (10/5): - Wie immer sehr erholsam
- David (8/5): - The place needs some work
- H3098WYtonyn (10/5): A week at the north coast, in Turtle Bay - On the north coast meet Turtle a travellers choice 5 star hotel, I was impressed by the geust relations personell and those in the reception are just wow. The ambience and the clean beach near watamu marine park is something to smile about. I highly recommend Turtle bay
- Emilia (5/5): Passable -
- Caroline (6/5): - It was perfectly comfortable and the rooms had air conditioning. There was a limited gluten free menu and the included wine was dreadful.
The pool was lovely and the staff excellent.
It is a but tired.
The booking of sunbeds was very tedious as some people rarely even came to the bed while others had no space.
The music at night was the same ever day, was not really catered for the needs of the huests that were there and very loud in the bedrooms
- Tony (8/5): Very good -
- Curt (2/5): - TV did not work. Staff and even manager called Ken made no effort to fix it.
- Sameer (8/5): Great location & on beach, rooms need massive reno - Rooms are in dire need renovations & upgrade. Service is good. Location & beach is amazing including food
- Peter (10/5): - Nydelig beliggenhet , nydelig strand. Helt ok rom , mat , bassenger
- Peter (10/5): Excellent vacation - It was the most fantastic stay , hotel , food and staff we had in many many years . We loved the place , very relaxing and friendly visitors . I will recommend to friends and family . Joyce our waitress , thanks for making us feel like home 😘
- 586MaryP (8/5): Gorgeous beach location, very friendly helpful staff - Turtle Bay sits on a lovely picture postcard white sandy beach. We had a lovely stay there. The staff were super-friendly and helpful everywhere - in reception, in the restaurant, in the bars, by the pool, just whenever you passed any one of them anywhere on site you'd get a smile and a 'Jambo'.
Rooms were spacious, with AC and a balcony looking out over the sea (we were on the first floor up in the main block rather than the ones fronting the sea but still had a nice view). There is an artistically draped mosquito net but actually we never needed it. Good shower and even a bath too, and there's a safe in the rooms.
The pool staff are lovely and will drag a sunbed for you wherever you want it placed, by the pool or on the beach, so it doesn't matter if there isn't one there when you come down. Then waiters come round periodically to ask if you'd like a drink brought to your sunbed.
No hassle on the beach... there are some people selling boat tours but they more or less wait for you to ask them rather than vice versa (cheaper than the hotel booked ones btw), and there weren't vendors around - we went for a half hour walk along the beach without being accosted. There are a couple of stalls on the beach with sarongs etc and if you pass those of course they'll ask if you want to come in, but generally you could enjoy the beach without hassle.
Food was good, plentiful, lots of curry based dishes, but a variety. Fantastic fruit at all meals, delicious mangoes.
The all inclusive drinks at the bar are a bit limited, very limited range of cocktails and no rose wine, but the drinks there are are nice, and served with a smile.
There isn't much around the hotel and you probably need a tuk tuk if you want to see anything of Watamu, but you can take a boat trip from the beach right by the hotel and see dolphins/snorkel on the reef (latter was a bit disappointing but we did see lots of dolphins).
Would definitely return - it's a lovely hotel
- Brigitte (10/5): - Der Aufenthalt war super,wie immer!!!
- Ruth (9/5): Superb - The all-inclusive is excellent value for money with a surprisingly large selection of food and drink. Location is stunning. I would struggle to find the negatives. Beds a bit hard and WiFi wasn't great in the room but we spent most of the time by the pool and beach anyway and the connection was good there.
- Bridget (8/5): Value for money - Beautiful gardens. Clean swimming pools. Friendly and attentive staff. The most stunning beach No stair access to the beach. The allocation of sun beds is inflexible, unfair and favours couples. As a single person I was moved out of my chosen space more than twice
- John (10/5): Exceptional - Good , great beach and beach front room, and pools
- Edward (8/5): Lovely resort - The bed was way too hard. . Sleep on my side and ribs were sore
- Andrew (8/5): Very good -
- Barney (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nemanja (7/5): Good -
- John (10/5): Exceptional - The location is spectacular, right on the beach. The hotel staff (and nature guides!) are super professional, attentive, and helpful. The all inclusive buffets are good value, and if you want more luxurious dishes or nicer specialty drinks, they're available a la carte.
- Thiong'o (4/5): Disappointed - I love the proximity of the hotel to the beach, airport, and shops. The pool was also really nice. The hotel rooms are completely run down. This is in comparison to other hotels in the coastal area that i have stayed in. It was disappointing to stay in their club rooms, having paid that much money. The towels are very ols, frayed and discoloured. There were no bathroom slippers provided by the hotel to take a shower. The food was also not as great as I had imagined. I was hoping to enjoy Swahili delicacies but were not available.
- Elaine (9/5): Excellent hotel, prime location. We’ll be back!! - We loved the traditional style with the white washed buildings underneath cool makuti high roofs.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Always attentive to everyone’s needs and ready to help.
The buffet style meals were excellent with plenty of choice to suit all tastes.
The location opposite Turtle Island directly on the beautiful white beach is perfect. A visit to the Watamu Marine Park is a must. The variety of gorgeous marine life is a feast for the eyes. Nothing
- Eleanor (9/5): Superb -
- Austine (8/5): Amazing - Amazing place, children friendly, clean, good food and rooms with great views
- liberationi (10/5): My favourite place in the whole wide world - What an amazing and wonderful place, I cannot praise it enough. It has got a beautiful vibe to it and all the people are just so kind and attentive. Wonderful for couples or families, your kids will LOVE it. The location has to be seen to be believed, it’s impossible to exaggerate the natural beauty of the beach. Just book and go, you will be so happy you did and you WILL go back for more 🤩❤️
