Guest Reviews
- Ottavia (8/5): - the location is perfect for visiting sossusvlei, 5 minutes from the entrance of the park. the rooms are clean and the bed is comfortable. could use a little renovation but overall is a good place. the cabins are distant from each other, that guarantees peace and privacy. the staff is nice and friendly. dinner at sossusvlei lodge is good. the view of the mountains at sunrise and sunset is priceless!
- Imans (4/5): - I found this lodge a bit expensive for what it offers. There’s no restaurant on-site, which means you have to pay extra for transfers just to get a meal.
The cleaning in my room wasn’t properly done — when I swept the floor upon arrival, I found a lot of sand and dust. That’s pretty disappointing. The very least they could do is sweep and refresh the towels before each new guest arrives.
As for their partner, Sossulvei Lodge / Adventure Camp — a nightmare. They couldn’t handle the fact that I canceled some of the meals (which is fair, I’m not going to eat three all-you-can-eat buffets a day!). So they “punish” you by “forgetting” to pick you up, and when you complain, they say, “Well, you canceled the other day.” Uh, yes… I still have the right to do what I want on my vacation, don’t I?
But no — they want you to spend your money without questioning anything. They practice a kind of exploitative tourism, clearly designed to milk wealthy white Western tourists, which I am not! And if you refuse to play the fool, they exclude you.
- deborah (10/5): amazing weekend in the desert. - had a lovely stay at Desert Camp. Everything was super clean. The rooms are very spacious with a wonderful bathroom.
The outside kitchen is fabulous with an incredible view of the mountains. They offer, at no cost, a box of kitchen utensils that has everything you would ever want (including a cast iron pan!)
- Vishwanath (10/5): - Clean and safe place in the middle of the desert. The AC worked great. Enjoyed the swimming pool. Kitchen is outside the house where it is very windy and dusty.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Close to national park - It was a nice place located close to the national park, offering beautiful scenery. However, communication could have been better. The reception overlooked the booking details of our stay, which caused issues during checkout.
- Timothy (10/5): - Excellent
- David (10/5): Good for star gazing - It was a great location for seeing the stars. We enjoyed the water hole, and even had a coyote visit at night.
- Lisa (8/5): - Die Unterkunft liegt ca. 15 Minuten vom äußeren Gate entfernt.
- Michel (10/5): Excellent - Very peaceful place. Campsite full nature. Swimming pool a bit cold in winter time. Kindness of the staff.
- ines (10/5): Tolle Unterkunft - Tolle Unterkunft, super Lage. Die Hütten bieten alles was man braucht.
- Christine (10/5): - Great
- Bryan (8/5): - Loved the self contained cottages.
- John (10/5): Peace and tranquility. - Spectacular views and comfortable beds. Outside cooking and bbq area. Pool by the bar and ice cold beer. 5 minutes from gate to Sossusvlei. Of the two camps, this is the one with better views.
- OLIVIER (10/5): Amazing view - Amazing view from the house.
- Monika (10/5): Great stay when visiting Sossusvlei - We had a nice stay in this property. The house was clean, good size and offered meal in the mother lodge near by.
- Andreas (8/5): - Nice camping with good facilities for each site. Be aware of high temperatures. There is a shop and fueling station close by.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The chalets are suituated in a very nice location with an beautiful view in the morning and evening
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Brilliant that you can organise your own BBQ and they deliver everything to you, stunningly beautiful location as well
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent value. Staff were very helpful. Please note that although I haven’t given the highest grades for cleanliness or condition, I have given grades that are the next highest level and one has to recognize that this is due to the location being alongside a desert/dune area where sand blows in the wind and thus it would be virtually impossible to expect a higher score in such circumstances. I really enjoyed this stay; you are on the edge of the desert and feel at one with the surroundings,
- Nikolaos (10/5): Unique experience. Could not be better!!! - Spacious small unit, with an outside kitchen, wonderful view of the evening sky, cool swimming pool area, and one-of-a-kind dining experience in Sossusvlei Lodge.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good location - Great location, very close to the park entrance (4 km). Food options were great but you’ll need to drive to the other resort for their restaurant which is close to park entrance.
- Oumar (10/5): - Magnifique !
Très beau cadre
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Pluss: Beliggenhet. Oversiktlighet.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - This property was in the middle of the desert and had amazing views. The staff were very pleasant and accommodating. The accomodation itself was very basic and not in any way fitting with the price tag. Beds were old and in need of replacing. Floor was very dirty. Accomodation close by was much better.
- David (10/5): Enjoyed it - Great self catering option in the area. Good service, clean place, air conditioning in the desert. Really enjoyed the braii and that you could pre-order food to be delivered to your room for cooking. Made meals perfect.
Only improvement I could say is to bridge the beds together a little better. We stayed at several other places that joined the two mattresses much more seamlessly. At least have one duvet/linens when joining them for couples.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Will be a perfect locaties in a few months (end 201@). Now still a lot of construction work. But these construction works do not avoid that our stay was perfect, thanks to the very friendly people of Desert Camp.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The mountain view from each chalet’s porch area is amazing! There is a lighted waterhole for oryx viewing. Each chalet has it’s own outdoor kitchenette with hotplate, BBQ, utensils: BYO food or order a cookout basket. The property is well situated to visit Sossusvlei.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - An excellent stay that well exceeded our expectations.
Stunning scenery and great to see wildlife around, Braai pack was great value.
Staff we very accommodating and flexible. Just a bit slow like all around Namibia.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Good location, close to the park. Friendly staff and very nice meals, having variety game meats.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - tolles Camp, sehr schön angelegt, tolle Aussicht, sehr nah am Parkeingang, Möglichkeit zur Fleischbestellung top
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Everything was perfect. The staff were very friendly, the room spacious and comfortable, the view was amazing
- Rebecca (10/5): Unique. - Pricey but what you got was quite unique ina very remote location. Nice staff.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Terrible reception upon arrival and bad service by the small bar attendant, and even by the manager who did not seem interested in how you were. Nobody available to ask a question of or to get help of any kind. Nobody seemed to care about the guest’s well being, so basically you’re on your own in the isolated and remote desert for the hefty cost of $139 US dollars per night.
- Paulo (8/5): Camp with beautiful views of the mountains - Nice self catering accommodation with newly built units.
The camp is near the entrance to the park and it is linked to the nearby Sossusvley Lodge. There is a small pool in the complex and each unit has a small kitchen with sufficient utensils to prepare BBQ meals. The uncooked food can be ordered at good prices from a list available at reception. The internet works only in the bar and pool area.
The view from the units is fantastic and they are well spaced. We enjoyed our stay at this camp and the staff was very courteous
- Marie (10/5): Great! - Great location, close to sussosvlei. Very friendly staff.
- Florian (8/5): Ausblick ist unbeschreiblich - Einfach überragende Aussicht... Super location...
- Hana (8/5): Perfect camp in a desert - This camp has a nice cool pool, a bar and a kitchenette on the tent porch. Very comfortable bed, large bathroom. No aircon, but the evening breeze was sufficient to cool the tent down. Large bathroom. It is worth booking the meals, which are served in the Sossuvlei Lodge (2 km drive from the camp) - the dinner buffet is an experience on its own.
- Brian (10/5): Luxury Tented Room in the Desert - Wow, what a great experience. The tented accommodation was luxurious and included a walled-in shower-room, vanity basin facilities and separate toilet room. All the luxuries of full plumbing with hot and cold water in a tent in the desert. What more can one say!!! The views out of each window on all four sides were spectacular to see the sunrises and sunsets over the open plains.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Beautiful location 5km from entrance to park. If you are self-catering you can put a deposit down to use their kitchen equipment. If you are considering half/full board know that you have to drive 3km along v bumpy roads to use the Camp's sister hotel for (very good) breakfast and dinner. You can also get food packs delivered in lieu of eating at the hotel, but veggies should be warned there's v little (nothing) on offer other than pre-packed salads if you get food delivered. There's a fridge/kitchen area for each tent - we found our fridges didn't really work properly though. Nice bar/pool area for a welcome dip after trekking in the desert. Comfy and clean beds/bathrooms.
- Jeremy (10/5): Brilliant place, stunning lcation - Recommend this place to anyone - quality camp in an astonishing location
- silvano (8/5): good but go during the summer - position great but terribly cold in the tent.
they could put a warmer as they have a fan.
starter pack don't say that the food is not cooked
- Caroline (8/5): A wonderful idea - Our check in was received at the camp as room only although we had booked half board. Reception contacted Expedia and all was swiftly sorted out.
This was a very comfortable glamping stay and a wonderful experience.
I would not book and expect to be able to self cater though as there is no cutlery, crockery, utensils or saucepans. This is such a shame as with the barbecue provided and the outdoor setting it would be just great. I was perplexed as to why there is no self catering equipment, we could not have coffee in the morning as although a kettle there were no mugs. The sister camp for people that are camping is cheaper, so people with their own equipment would go there.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Perfect Family Get-a-Way! - The Desert Lodge was a great place to stay on our way to the DUNES. They have a swimming pool for the kids, bar area for the adults. They also have a watering hole that attracts animals. We saw an Orx. At night, we saw 2 foxes from our porch under the moon light. It was pretty amazing. The Expedia deal gets you breakfast at the lodge down the road which was really good. Just make sure they don't try to charge you. :-)
- Naude (8/5): Amazing desert location - The food at the main lodge was amazing. Could use AC as it was really hot.
- Mikael (8/5): - Economical and very good option if you want to see Sossusvlei. Nice tent with unbeatable view. It was super hot so we enjoyed the little pool. We had dinner at the more luxurious sister property Sossusvlei Lodge, a buffet that was exceptionally good.
If you're pressed for time, it's perfectly feasible just staying one night, visiting Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei in the early morning and then continuing on...
- Paula (8/5): Wonderful comfort in the desert - Superb location for visiting Sossusvlei
- Kristine (10/5): Great escape in the desert - Great location close to Sossusvlei, beautiful landscape, large rooms, refreshing pool with bar, water hole. Hotel will arrange "starter pack" with food / wood etc for bbq if necessary. No A/C (its a tent!) but good cross breezes so kept cool in spite of hot day. Great place to relax - wish we stayed longer
- Tony (8/5): Desert camp well positioned - I booked at Desert Camp because my favoured place was booked out. Desert Camp was an excellent choice even though it is outside the park area. It's relationship with the nearby Sossusvlei Lodge meant we could have meals at the lodge - which was both an attractive an inexpensive place. The individual rooms at Desert Camp were well designed and more than adequate for a mature aged couple with own vehicle.
- Penny (6/5): Lower budget option for the area - A rustic option to the Soussusvlei lodge. Self- catering only. What we really didn't like were the hard-to-open and close zippers on the "windows" - very frustrating. Pleasant picnic table outside with great desert ambiance. Lovely crisp white sheets.
- Miguel (10/5): Truly an Oasis in the desert! - Great base for visiting Sossuvlei. Good (plunge) pool with fantastic view for sunset soak & drink. Tented accomodations are as comfortable as any rooms. Basket breakfast they can prepare to take to Dunes is very good quality and value. Definitely recommend this place.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Special experience to spend night i THE desert - Well organised camp , just what we needed including THE foodservice
- Henrik (8/5): Very recommendable - very nice location and great view !! Friendly staff and nice Little bar with reasonable prices
- Stephen (10/5): Desert Camp - This is a great place to stay while seeing Sossusvlei. It's only about a five minute drive to the Sossusvlei park main gate. It's a tented camp that is self catering. They have food preparation areas attached to the tent units. They only have a bar with no restaurant next to their small pool area. Not to worry though. They are part of Sossusvlei Lodge down the road. They can book you a place at the lodge's huge buffet if you didn't bring your own food. It's like staying at the lodge without paying the high price. Also the camp is quiet and peaceful. There is a small nature walk next to the reception area where you can walk the trail and see Oryx and Springbuck grazing.
- Kerneels (10/5): Nice Camp close to Sossusvlei - Excellent Camp and staff. Due to canvas design, the desert winds sounds worse than it actually are
- Esteban (10/5): Luxe "camping" experience - I flat out loved Desert Camp. When going to Sossusvlei, location was a big consideration in choosing lodging for me and my wife. We wanted to be as close as possible, to catch early morning photos at Sossus & Deadvlei, but didn't want to camp or dole out $$ for the lodge inside the park gates. Sossusvlei Lodge (the sister property for Desert Camp) was also expensive and luxurious, but too expensive for us.
At Desert Camp, we got privacy in our own cabin and were very comfortable. It felt like very posh camping -- the rooms were clean, spacious, comfortable, yet maintained a camping vibe. There was unlimited wifi, and the connection was good. The grounds were beautiful, and we had oryx grazing in our backyard. For meals, we brought most of our own food and ate at the Sossusvlei Lodge for a dinner buffet one night (Desert Camp made reservations for us).
Overall, it seemed to be a cost-efficient and comfortable place to stay. It felt like self-catering lodge, but with access to a fancier hotel/lodge just down the street for meals if needed. Braai options are available, which we did not utilise. We would recommend Desert Camp as a good option for our friends who visit Sossusvlei.
- Zojocola (10/5): Perfect in its simplicity - We really enjoyed out stay in this unique location. The accommodation was simple, clean and comfortable. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We had dinner on our deck while ostrich, springbok, jackals and oryx walked within site. We also had a magnificent social weaver nest just outside our window. It was a very memorable experience!
- "Brad J" (8/5): Great Desert Experience - The rooms were quite basic. A little more modern décor would go a long way for me to give this a 5/5 rating .Pool was great, especially in December. Some Umbrella's around the pool would really help in 40degree heat !! Air-con in all rooms is imperative for the summer months....
- Elizabeth Graham (6/5): - No Air, December too hot
- Y Withers (8/5): Near to Sossusvlei, but still away from it all - We loved feeling like we were in the middle of nowhere, as the place has a "camping" feel to it. But this place is also only 5km away from the entrance to Sesriem/Sossusvlie park which makes it convenient. The camp has links to the Sossusvlei Lodge, so you can eat there if you are not self catering.
